Scalability Guidelines for Software as a Service: Recommendations based on a case analysis of Quinyx FlexForce AB and UCMS Group Ltd.

Rapp, Mikael January 2010 (has links)
Software as a service (SaaS) has become a common business model for application providers. However, this success has lead to scalability issues for service providers. Their user base and processing needs can grow rapidly and it is not always clear how a SaaS provider should optimally scale their service. This thesis summarizes the technological (both software and hardware) related solutions to scaling, but will also cover financial and managerial aspects of scalability. Unfortunately, there is no existing out of the box solution for managing scalability, every situation and application is currently viewed as a unique problem, but there exists a lot of good advice from many sources about scaling. Obviously there are practical solutions to scaling, as there are successful SaaS providers, but it is not clear if there exists some fundamental principles that every SaaS provider could use to address the issue of scalability. This thesis seeks to find such fundamental principles though previous research, articles and finally a case analysis of Quinyx FlexForce AB. The thesis concludes that there are many principles of scaling a 3-tier web system and that most principles can be applied by SaaS providers.

Development of Sound Database for Fishes in Taiwan by Relational Model

Liou, Yu-lin 31 August 2009 (has links)
The goal of development of sound database for marine fishes in Taiwan not only preserves data, but also wants to provide a common ground of data sharing to increase the efficiency for the study of fish behavior, automatic recognition, localization, and tracking. In order to provide the sound quality in terms of signal-to-noise ratio to users, the fish sound recording will be analyzed before uploading. Because most available data were recorded either in the field or in fish tank, the fish sounds were extracted by using two different automatic detection methods. If fish sound recordings were from the field, the Time Endpoint Detection was applied by the processing a 0.5-s time frame with 50 % overlapping. Then the energy of the time frame was obtained by the sum of square of amplitude and the median of the energy plus a standard deviation was established as the threshold to extract fish sounds. If the recording was made in the fish tank, the Frequency Endpoint Detection was applied by 0.5-s time frame with 50 % overlapping. Then each time frame will be transformed into spectrum and the energy ratio of each frequency will be calculated from the spectrum. Finally the information entropy was obtained from the energy ratio and the detection threshold was set on standard deviation above the median of the information entropy. From two different automatic detection methods, the sound quality was presented in the signal-to-noise ratio, which was the average power of signal divided by average power of the background noise. The fish sound database was a 3-Tier system and developed by PHP and MySQL. In order to reduce the storage size and maintain the integrity of data, the Relational Model was applied. Firstly, the recording data were conceptually represented as Entity-Relationship Diagram(ERD). Secondly, the ERD was transformed to relational schemas. Thirdly, the schemas was normalized by first, second, and third forms. To improve the users¡¦ efficiency the sound database provides three interfaces. One was data uploading, another was data searching according to the keyword of creature name, recording area, and recording time, the other was data comparing by recording number.

Comparison between .NET and Java EEImplementation of Cash & Bank System

Waqar, Hafiz Umer January 2013 (has links)
The demands of software engineering increases with everyday passed and every organization shows interest to work on daily routine work in the computerized system to improve efficiency and accuracy of data. Most of organization demands different kinds of computerized software solutions that developed in modern technologies. There are different software development technologies that is getting popular with the passage of time and provide high quality product to their user. It is not an easy to decide which technology choose to develop computerized system where most software falls. The primary purpose of thesis is to compare two different modern software development technologies by develop an application with same functional requirements. This thesis report will help to user for selection of software development technology. Cash and bank financial application is choose to develop using .NET and Java Enterprise Edition. Microsoft Visual Studio development environment is used for .NET development and NetBeans IDE is used for Java Enterprise Edition application. .NET framework contains many language that are interrelated with each other like C#, VB, J#, C++ and F#. Cash and bank application is develop in C# and Java programming languages and persistence storage of data is design in Microsoft SQL Server. Cash and bank application is develop with three tier architecture and layer approach. The syntax of .NET and Java Enterprise Edition is quite similar but procedure to establish connection, data retrieval and handling the data in different way. NET platform provide built in libraries, components and efficient user controls that helps for fast development in short period of time.

Reading First/Bay State Reading Initiative: Public vs. Private Implementation-Which Produces the Best Results?

Di Leo, Marlene A 13 May 2011 (has links)
The dissertation is a study to determine which program, Reading First or Bay State Reading Initiative, will demonstrate the greatest gains in reading for students in grades K-3 using a 3-Tier Reading Model. The findings from this study are intended to provide pertinent information on which best practices work in increasing student achievement for reading. Education reform continues to be a hot topic at all levels within the United States. With the spending of billions of federals, state and local dollars, the persistent talk of accountability is ongoing. Since NCLB inception, the year 2014 when all students need to reach proficiency in statewide standardized tests in mathematics and reading, continues to be a threatening time period. With each state setting its own definition and determination of what proficiency is, it is measured by the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). This AYP measurement will determine each school’s progress incrementally until it reaches 100% in 2014. 48% of all schools in Massachusetts failed to make their AYP in 2004. It is predicted that by 2014, 90% of schools in Massachusetts will not reach its APY obligation (MassPartners for Public Schools, 2005). With the pursuit of reaching AYP, the search is still on for what best practices work in increasing student achievement. This study utilizes a mixed method research design; including quantitative analysis of the reading scores, a qualitative analysis of teacher and administrator perspective on the effectiveness vii of each program and a financial cost-effectiveness comparison of the two programs. The quantitative research design includes comparing DIBELS and GRADE results of two elementary schools for students in grades K – 3 each of which uses a different reading program. School A uses the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series for their core reading curriculum while School B uses Scott Foresman Reading Street. In addition to comparing the aggregate scores of each school to each other, a number of sub-groups will also be compared. These groups will include low income students (students who receive free and reduced lunch), students with limited English proficiency (LEP), and special education students. Mean comparisons will be utilized to identify which program produces the best results. In order to identify strengthens and weaknesses of each approach a questionnaire will be utilize to obtain this information from teachers and the administrators who took part in implementing both programs. In these times of tight budgets and difficult decisions on how to meet the needs of all students it is imperative that cost effectiveness is examined between the two programs. Which of these two programs will provide the greatest gain? How much will that gain cost? Which program will reap the best results for the least amount of money?

No. of bitstreams: 1 Carlos Olavo de Azevedo Camacho JUnior.pdf: 1515509 bytes, checksum: aabcef2f95f84d9a72db1a2c9b9aff85 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-05-18 / This research aims to verify how application projects can help the software developer professional to acquire knowledge about the 3-tier development model. Nowadays companies want to prove that their services are accomplished with the best quality standards of information technology. To do that many tools are created and a special one is called IDE Integrated Development Environment. An IDE allows the software developer professional to bring efficacy into his project. We will discuss what skills are important to this professional. This research will analyze the question: Why do companies based on information technology like to use processes with patterns? To demonstrate the importance of patterns in technology field, we search the Internet history (Vint Cert, Demi Getsko) to discuss the patterns used in Internet history. We have written articles about .NET development to demonstrate how to use patterns in a software development project. This research originated a book titled "Desenvolvimento em Camadas com C# .NET (available in portuguese only)" who was used by IFET-SP students in a study.

Καλού, Αικατερίνη 13 July 2010 (has links)
In the present diploma thesis, one qualitative review is realised for the concepts of Semantic Web and of technologies of representation of knowledge and reasoning that being in this, such as ontologies, methods and tools for ontology development, representation languages of ontologies as well as the extension of expressiveness of ontologies with the addition of rules. Also, it becomes an extensive report in an other evolutionary tendency, that dominates in the space of Web, Web 2.0. In the scope of Web 2.0, concepts such as mashups and Web APIs are analyzed. Specifically for the concept of Web APIs, we make a report and an analysis of concrete APIs, as those of Amazon and EBay. The concepts of Semantic Web and Web 2.0 are presented a lot of times as competitive for the future of Web. Nevertheless, it becomes more and more obvious that these two concepts are complemental. In the scope of these diploma thesis, was developed an application which combines these two dominant technological tendencies. In particular, the application constitutes a framework of searching books from Amazon and Half eBay with a personalised character. For the application, each user constitutes an autonomous entity. Consequently, the content of application is adapted depending on the profile of user each time. The implementation of application is supported exclusively in the ontology development, in the writing of rules (for the personalisation), in the creation of a mashup and in Web APIs. Finally, it is marked that the application is supported in a distributed 3-tier architecture.
