Dosimetry of upper extremities of personnel in nuclear medicine hot labs / Δοσιμέτρηση άνω άκρων προσωπικού σε θερμά εργαστήρια πυρηνικής ιατρικήςΠαπαδόγιαννης, Παναγιώτης 01 October 2012 (has links)
The specific nature of work in nuclear medicine departments involves the use of isotopes and handling procedures, which contribute to the considerable value of the equivalent dose received, in particular, by the fingertips.
Workers of nuclear medicine units who label radiopharmaceuticals are exposed to ionizing radiation. The doses of nuclear medicine workers determined by individual dosimeters, which supply data on the magnitude of personal dose equivalent. The dosimetry pointing to a considerable optimization of the radiological protection among that professional group. However, the problem of the excessive hand exposure had been noted already in the early 1980s. Systematic studies were undertaken in West Scotland. The difficulties associated with automation of radiopharmaceutical preparation process are responsible for the continuing growth of exposure to the hands of the workers. Similar studies have also been undertaken, e.g. in Chile, Norway, Australia, Italy, USA, Belgium(1).
In each case, special attention has been paid to the exposure of nuclear medicine worker hands. The radiopharmacists who label various ligands can be exposed to high radiation doses to their fingertips (primarily of the thumb, index finger and middle finger). Quite frequently, the Hp(0.07) to the fingertips of those three fingers may exceed the dose limit, i.e. value of 500 mSv/y for the skin of human fingers, this dose limit refers to the maximum dose recorded(2).
Specific difficulty in assessing the exposures of the most affected finger parts is aggravated by the fact that the universally employed method for the determination of the radiation doses received by the hands using a ring with attached thermoluminescence detectors is not adequate in this particular case. This measurement method is inadequate because distribution of the doses received by the skin of the hands and fingers is extremely non uniform.
The main aim of the study was to measure the absorbed dose at the hands of the personnel by using thermoluminescent detectors / -

Renogram in Nuclear Medicine is the main examination for the diagnosis of several diseases in children such as kidney failure or obstructive uropathy. The dosimetry of this examination is based on the group-specific values presented by the ICRP publications. The need for person-specific dosimetry in the Nuclear Medicine urged in the creation of a new image-based dosimetric method, based on the outcome of the examination of the renogram of each patient. With the help of an experimental procedure, the percentage of self-absorption inside the “source” organs and the absorption from the surrounding tissues of the transmitted radiation of the radiopharmaceutical (99m-Tc-MAG3) is calculated, leading with the use of the MIRD method, to the measurement of the activity of Technetium inside the patient’s organs during the renogram’s duration. Afterwards with the help of theoretical models, conclusions and assumptions the total cumulated activity of the patient’s organs is calculated. The results show similar values with other projects published, which were more invasive and less cost-effective for the department.

An empirical approach to the semantics of Ancient Greek which reveals the ideologies underlying the use of mathematical models in the description of musical phenomena : The case of the opposites oxus and barusPille, Laetitia 05 June 2015 (has links)
The general objective of this thesis is to show that the ideology characterizing a discourse can be revealed by its semantic study and, more precisely by the detailed description of the words of the language in which this discourse is uttered. With this objective in mind, we have worked on the texts of the Greek Antiquity theoreticians in which they describe the musical phenomenon. The first testimonies about the relationship between music and mathematics can be found in the Pythagorean texts. When the best-known authors Plato, Aristotle and more particularly his disciple Aristoxenus wrote about music, they drew their inspiration from what they knew of the Pythagorean theories, either to follow and develop them or, on the contrary, to criticize them. Whatever their position on the matter, they form the source from which the Pythagorean theories can be reconstructed. The craze for theory and abstract structures, inspired by the development of the first mathematics constitutes a striking feature of the discourses on music we study. We have chosen to envisage the corpus with a multidisciplinary approach to further comprehend the role of the opposites oxus and barus in the building of the musical knowledge, as well as in the construction of the scientific and philosophic knowledge in ancient Greece. In order to better understand the role of these words, we use the Viewpoints Semantics, whose main goal is to systematically reveal the ideology crystallized in the words of natural languages.

Development and Prototyping of a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter for 3-Phase 480 Volt SystemsNorlander, Matthew R 01 October 2011 (has links)
Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) technology was first introduced in the NEC in 1971, yet four decades later the technology has not been introduced to a great extent outside of the home environment. This thesis introduces the difficulties encountered in low-voltage three phase ground fault current detection, and adopts a previously patented tripping scheme to develop and prototype a digital relay for 3-phase 480 volt systems capable of the sensitivity and speed required for personnel safety. Results demonstrate the feasibility of the concept and suggest commercial development should be pursued. The prototype is capable of mA sensitivity and reliably detects and removes the faulted feeder from the system, without causing false tripping on non-faulted feeders. The prototype system has been tested and responds appropriately for faults over the 1 mA to 1000 A range.

Genová exprese enzymů zapojených v regulaci apoptózy v myokardu potkana - vliv chronické a akutní hypoxie / Gene expression of enzymes involved in the regulation of apoptosis in rat moycardium - effect of chronic and acute hypoxiaBlahová, Tereza January 2014 (has links)
Adaptation to chronic hypoxia provides myocardial protection against ischemia - reperfusion injury (IR). Cardioprotective effect of adaptation depends on the degree and duration of hypoxic exposure and daily regime of adaptation. Certain protective regimes of adaptations to hypoxia have been reported to activate proapoptotic signaling pathways and bioactive sphingolipids were recently shown to play important role in the regulation of apoptosis in the heart. We aimed to determine the mRNA level of selected genes related to apoptotic pathways and to sphingolipid metabolism in two models of hypoxic adaptation, continous normobaric hypoxia (CNH 10% O2) with different exposures (4h, 48h, 120h, 21days) and intermitent hypobaric hypoxia (IHH 7000 m, 8h/day). Both ventricles, LV and RV, were analysed after adaptation to CNH and only LV was analysed after IHH adaptation. Our results show that both types of adaptation increased mRNA of proapoptotic genes, CNH mainly in RV and IHH in LV. Furthermore, increased expressions of proapoptotic genes were accompanied by the increase of expression of enzymes producing predominantly protective kinds of sphingolipids. The exact role of apoptosis and sphingolipid signaling molecules in endogenous myocardial protection requires further research. Key words: Apoptosis,...

Le mythe de Pélops et d'Hippodamie en Grèce ancienne : cultes, images, discours / The myth of Pelops and Hippodameia in ancient Greee : cults, images, discourseCuvelier, Pierre 29 November 2012 (has links)
This is a mythological study concerning mainly two heroic figures of ancient Greece: Pelops and Hippodameia, ancestors of the heroic genos of the Pelopids. In the continuity of the works of Marcel Detienne, Claude Calame or Charles Delattre about the notion of myth, no more considered as an « indigenous category » but as a construct built a posteriori by contemporary scholars, I define, on the basis of the minimal criterias that are the proper nouns of the heroes and their iconographical types, a corpus composed of Greek (and also in some measure Latin) texts and of Greek, Etruscan and Roman figurative works, which I then study systematically in order to find out more precise criterias of unity or discontinuity in the representations of these heroic figures, paying special attention to the great variety of contexts (cults, genres, historical eras) in which they are evoked. I thus study the heroic cults devoted to Pelops and Hippodameia in Olympia, the visual representations of these heroes, and the different forms of speech which mention them, from Homer to Nonnos of Panopolis. I lastly try to provide the main elements for a global study of this corpus in a perspective informed by historical anthropology. If the widest corpus, composed of the mentions of Pelops, has only a limited coherence, several subsets appear more pertinent, mainly that which is formed by the representations of the chariot race that allows the union of two spouses, despite the reluctance of Hippodameia's father, Oinomaos

Evaluating the Ethics and Issues in Media Case StudiesHulme, Stephen D. 16 March 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Ethics and Issues in Media is an interactive case-study software that allows communications students to make ethical decisions based on real-life case studies. The evaluation of Ethics and Issues in Media focused on whether or not Ethics and Issues in Media 1) was easy to use, 2) allowed students to make real-life ethical decisions in realistic contexts, 3) enabled students to think about ethical issues in new ways, 4) enabled students to think through and determine potential courses of action to realistic ethical issues and 5) enabled students to understand the consequences of others' ethical decisions. A focus group discussion was held with the creator of Ethics and Issues in Media and with the students who had used it. Students' comments regarding Ethics and Issues in Media were generally positive. Ethics and Issues in Media proved to be successful in the ways that it enabled students to think through ethical issues for themselves, understand the consequences of others' ethical decisions, and think about ethical issues in new ways. Some students found Ethics and Issues in Media to be difficult to navigate, and many had trouble trusting that their answers were saved or submitted properly. The students recommended that the instructor expand the number and type of case studies included in Ethics and Issues in Media. Additionally, I recommend a more thorough orientation to Ethics and Issues in Media prior to implementation as a final exam.
