Resident perceptions of the sociocultural impacts of tourism in Llangollen, north-east WalesWhalley, Peter A. January 2000 (has links)
Taking as its starting point the need to better understand the relationship between tourism and culture in a western European context, this research develops and applies a conceptual framework and methodology to evaluate the attitudes among residents of a tourist receiving community to the sociocultural impacts of tourism. To this end, a case study approach is used to evaluate the attitudes of the residents of Llangollen, a small market town in North-east Wales, to the sociocultural impacts of tourism on their town and way of life. As host to the annual Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, and as a popular destination for day visitors and longer stay tourists alike, the community of Llangollen is a mature tourist destination possessing a wide range of tourist and cultural facilities. The study examines a range of appropriate literature and develops a conceptual framework around three key theories: the notion of resident 'coping strategies' to deal with the impacts of tourism, the sociological principle of social exchange theory and the social-psychological theory of social representations, with the latter being central to the study's methodology. There were three elements to the field work. Firstly, preliminary sensitising interviews were carried out in order to highlight key areas of local concern, and to inform the design of the survey work. Secondly, a questionnaire survey was undertaken of the residents of Llangollen, which was then interpreted using two different methods of respondent segmentation and using an assessment of the difference between groups. Finally, focus group discussions were carried out in the town in order to assist in the interpretation of the questionnaire findings and also to provide a systematically-derived set of qualitative data in order to assess the relative merits of taking different methodological approaches to the research. The findings of the research show that the community of Llangollen is generally positive about the impacts of tourism, with the role of the International Eisteddfod being pivotal in cultural terms. The three different approaches to the analysis of the impacts of tourism in Llangollen provided different perspectives and insights. The multivariate technique of cluster analysis gave the clearest picture from the questionnaire of resident perceptions of the cultural impacts of tourism, whereas an equity-based approach gave more indication of exchange processes at work in the community. The use of focus group discussions proved to be by far the most valuable in terms of drawing out not only what were the attitudes of residents, but also how and why such attitudes had come about in the first place. Most importantly, this research has made much clearer the political, economic and cultural contexts within which the residents of Llangollen perceive the impacts of tourism, and how it is these contexts which are influential in the attitudes taken to the impacts of tourism on the community, on groups in the community, and on the individual members of the community. The research also suggests there is a need for tourism research to move away from its traditional reliance on the questionnaire survey, and the search for statistically significant but perhaps socially irrelevant groups. It is suggested that further use of focus group discussions may help to more fully understand the relationships between tourism and culture within local communities.

Questioning empowerment in community-based tourism in rural BaliDolezal, Claudia January 2015 (has links)
The term 'empowerment' is used with greater frequency in tourism for development, particularly in the context of community-based tourism (CBT), which is often referred to as a tool to 'empower' communities in the initiation, implementation and management of tourism. Still, critical and empirically grounded research on empowerment remains limited, particularly as emerging from social relationships in CBT. These are in many cases regarded as disempowering for community members, such as the tourism encounter and community relationships in cases where they lead to conflicts and jealousy, rather than collaboration. This research analyses these social relationships prevalent in CBT to take them as a potential starting point for social empowerment. Its aim is to locate social spaces of empowerment in CBT by unravelling power relations between the actors involved at local level. In these social spaces of empowerment, the basis of empowerment is generative power, defined as collective power with and power within, based on self-respect, to achieve power to generate positive change and to overcome power over (i.e. dominating power). The fieldwork was conducted in three rural villages in Bali, which engage in CBT and are supported by a local NGO that aims at empowering communities. The methodology draws upon ethnographic traditions alongside semi-structured interviews and participant observations. Symbolic interactionism provides the methodological position, regarding meaning as constructed through interaction. A reflexive chapter discusses the intersubjectivities between the researcher and participants and links the methodology with the intellectual argument and the findings of the study. Empirical evidence reveals that empowerment opportunities are unequal in the studied villages, with obstacles such as language, a lack in skills and caste hindering villagers' empowerment. The village tourism committees (VTCs), a local and trained elite, take control over the space of CBT and the tourism encounter, by employing notions of 'authenticity' to sell the CBT product. Although CBT creates hope for change and empowerment for community members, it currently remains empowering for a few, while others generally experience tokenistic pseudo-participation and a silent involvement. At the same time, this study reveals first signs of empowerment based on power with and power within, generated in the tourism encounter and through villagers' social ties, which are visualised in a 'CBT power diagram'.

Sport and the state : ideology and practiceWilley, David Leonard January 1988 (has links)
The focus of the study is the growing involvement of the British state in sport from the early 1960s to the mid to late 1980s. The thesis maintains that the close association of the organisation of sport with education shifted under government and business influence towards an instrumental welfare role for the state, and towards a privatised entertainment oriented practice linked to business sponsorship and media influence. Investigation is based largely on primary material derived from documentary and interview sources, and draws on a critical analysis of relevant contributions in the sociology of sport categorised here under pluralist, social reproduction, culturalist and state-investment perspectives. Particular use is made of the concepts of collective consumption, corporatism and hegemony. The central theme is that sport has served a legitimatory purpose for the state. It is argued that state involvement in sport has a structural relationship with changing economic conditions, that political responses involved a complexity of factors, and that the ideological structuring and restructuring of the content and organisation of sporting practices has been framed by a tension between conservative and liberal forces. The Labour Party-led expansion of provision for sport has been shown to have been primarily a 'statist' stance underpinned by a corporate management ideology which, though increasing facilities, actually worked to reinforce inequalities. The Conservative Party though emphasising freedom and independence for organisations in sport has promoted central control and market values.

Leisure exclusion? Analysing interventions using active leisure with young people offending or at riskMcCormack, Fiona January 2000 (has links)
This research considered the role of active leisure-based interventions with young people at risk of offending. It examined some of the claimed outcomes of participation for young people, and the types of provision which can support positive outcomes. A central feature of the research was an analysis of the impact of interventions on leisure-behaviour and attitudes in the medium term. This was underpinned by three stages of research to ensure the appropriateness of the main longitudinal case studies and the framework diagram.

The research is characterized by a qualitative / quantitative type, and has the objective to investigate how strategies have build conciliations between sports and academic foundation in elite athletes from the Brazilian’s Men National Basketball U-17 and U- 19 . The study is organized into three chapters, " state of knowledge " , the first chapter aims to chart the academic productions that deal on the compatibility between academics and sports training . Used as a source of database for Scielo national research and Portal Periódico Capes for international research. A sum of 17 articles covering 13 journals were found . The data were sorted / analyzed by bibliometric indicators such as annual distribution, magazine distribution, authorial relationship and demographic origin. For analysis were also considered a doctoral thesis three dissertations and three papers presented at the congress as well as a special issue of the journal, not located in the chosen bases. Shows that the concern over the issue arose in Europe and the United States in the 70s, in Brazil, the issue shall be addressed in the 2000s. Demonstrates attempts at reconciliation between training activities in countries of Europe, United States and Brazil , and the importance of family, and belonging to social classes in the possibility of a prioritization of training involved . The second chapter, the qualitative and quantitative nature, investigates the strategies used by athletes assembled in 2013 to the Brazilian men’s basketball youth teams U- 17 and U-19 years , as the possible reconciliations between sports and academic foudation. Searching further understanding of the influence for the selection process for the national teams in schooling levels of these elite athletes, such as dropout, delay in school years and etc. The research gives prominence to the percentages that shows, for example, averages of flunking student-athletes, dropout and school delay in this larger group of athletes compared to the national averages. The third chapter seeks to analyze what is the understanding of this group of young athletes in relation to schooling, or whether a possible lack of interest of this group by the current school models would only be because they are elite athletes. For this, we use the research possibilities arising from the second half of the questionnaire used as a tool to devise a methodology of free word association directed from four inducing words ( semantic structures ) , namely: " training " , " studying " , " go to school "and " compete " . This free membership is usually used as a theoretical / methodological support in research investigating social representation (ACOSTA, 2005) Showcasing these questions we note that the relative position of these athletes the school does not differ from those found in other studies dealing with young people placed in high school . The lack of significance of what is learned in school in relation to wanting to develop as a work experience , causes the school is perceived as dull , but at the same time, necessary if your dreams/projects do not happen in sports training.

This study analyses the magazine Praticando Capoeira, understanding it as vestige of a practice net, able to make see the meaning contest in which it was produced and the strength relationship that determinates its structure. The printed matter was produced by the D+T publishing house from 1999, sold mainly in newsstands until 2009, period in which was published 44 editions. By editorial dispositives of the printed matter and by representations elaborated and put to circulate, aimed to understand the world of capoeira, considering it as a social field. A magazine, by its production and circulation agility, can catch aspects of quotidian at the same time that the informations, the conflicts and changes happen. To work with this object that became source of research, it is necessary to consider three distinct elements, which are articulated, considering them as support of texts, besides paying attention to its own texts and to the speeches produced by the chain of meanings in the moment of reading. Based in the Cultural History, and in the reflexions representations struggle, the research understands the collection of magazines as cultural objects that keep the marks of its production. Based in the magazine materiality, work with the periodic using the concept of objects archaeology, in search of clues, to localyze signs of editorial practices, able to reveal the vestiges of strategies used by editors to organization and regulation of the printed matter reading. The magazine Praticando Capoeira is a document and a monument on the world of capoeira, a witness of present to the future that provides the recalling of our time. The representations are in the texts and images, materialized in the object by its editorial formulation. We identified that the magazine presents the organization of the field based on capoeira groups and consider the practice of capoeira as one of the elements of Brazilian identity, with sportive and pedagogical potential.

The objective of this research is to investigate the limits and possibilities of the inserts of Physical Education in the planning of public health policies in Vitória - ES as a joint action to promote public health. We sought to ascertain which the existing initiatives proposed by the Municipal Health Department (MHD) were, and what the prospects for intersectoral proposed actions with other sectors of public administration using corporal practices in health. This is a documentary research with a qualitative approach. In the initial stage, we conducted a literature survey in order to gather information aimed at the elaboration of a theoretical support on the issue of research. We also made a survey of the laws and decrees that are in effect and that rule the health system of our country. In the second stage, we conducted a document collection on the MHD website, as well as at the department itself, of the documents considered relevant and dealing with the period between the years 2005 and 2012. For the data analysis, the technique used was the content analysis, which provides for a cut of the texts according to the most meaningful content for the following clustering and categorization of the answer units. It was verified that the speech found in the documents is one of a broader view of health, but in the analysis of the proposed actions, we realized that physical activity is still guided by the kind that primarily acts on the biological health of the individual. It was also found that even initially, the city of Vitória has entered Physical Education professionals within multidisciplinary teams, thus enhancing health actions proposed by the county. In that regard, to the joint actions' approach to health promotion, the intersectoriality and social participation were evident, but in the simplistic way. Such intersectoriality, most often occurs horizontally. Regarding social participation, we found that although there are mechanisms that facilitate this participation in health management, for a lack of data, we can not claim that they are effective in practice.

Goal-setting : a psychological skill and an individual difference factorKingston, Kieran Michael January 2000 (has links)
This thesis comprises a collection of research papers within the areas of goalsetting as a psychological skill, and as an individual difference factor (previously interpreted as a personality characteristic). It uses a variety of methodologies and statistical analyses to address pertinent research questions identified from the goalsetting and goal perspectives literature. The first two studies examined the influence of goal-setting practices on performance and associated cognitions. Specifically, the results from the first study provide support for the use of self-referenced goals, while indicating that process goals have additional benefits over and above those associated with performance goals. The second study into goal-setting suggested that utilising process goals in a more holistic (rather than specific) manner might prove efficacious when they are incorporated into a pre-performance routine. Although the findings providing some support for the use of process goals, it appears that the exact nature of the process goals used is important. The remaining three research studies looked at the propensity of individuals to judge personal ability according to normative and/or self-referenced criteria (ego and task goal orientations). The first study in this area suggested that these criteria change in a systematic fashion in response to naturally occurring situations, and that ability level moderates this effect. The results of the second study indicated that competition performance is differentially affected according to the specific goal orientation profile that athletes hold. The third research study provides evidence which suggests that skill level might be predi icted according to the patterning of goal orientations possessed by athletes.

State anxiety, conscious processing and motor performanceMullen, Richard Hugh January 2000 (has links)
This thesis examined the conscious processing hypothesis as a potential explanation for the way in which anxiety affects motor performance. The thesis is written as a series of research papers (studies). The five papers are preceded by a general introduction and followed by a general discussion. The first study replicated and extended previous research in the area of conscious processing. Participants acquired the skill of golf putting explicitly and implicitly across 400 trials. During a high anxiety transfer test, the performance of participants who learned explicitly was less robust than that of participants who learned implicitly, supporting the conscious processing hypothesis. Study 2 tested the conscious processing hypothesis using a performance rather than learning paradigm to control for possible desensitisation effects identified as a possible alternative explanation for the results of study 1. Results supported the conscious processing hypothesis, but an alternative attentional explanation was identified. Study 3 examined the conscious processing hypothesis while controlling for both desensitisation and attentional effects. Kinematic measures were also adopted to examine the golf putting task in vivo. Performance results partially supported the conscious processing hypothesis. Study 4 replicated and extended the design adopted in study 3. Study 4 also examined processing efficiency theory as a plausible alternative to the conscious processing hypothesis. Kinematic and cardiovascular measures were incorporated into the design. Performance scores suggested a processing efficiency interpretation. However, conscious processing effects could not be totally discounted. The fifth study examined the suggestion that the use of process goals by skilled but anxious performers might actively encourage lapses into conscious processing. Increases in state anxiety did not produce performance decrements. A lack of training in the use of goals was identified as an explanation for the absence of performance impairment. Implications for future research and applied practice are derived from the five studies.
