Classical Myths on the Victorian Popular Stage: the Figure of Cassandra

Monrós Gaspar, Laura 07 September 2009 (has links)
The scope of the present thesis is to unveil the cultural processes behind the reception of the Cassandra myth in Victorian burlesque theatre. The main focus is on the semiotic dialogue between arts and reality which features nineteenth-century popular theatre as an essential tool for reading the social history of Victorian England. My principal argument is that the analysis of the convergence of popular, iconic and literary refigurations of classical myths and their representation on the Victorian popular stage underscores the relevance of burlesque both as a reflecting and a refracting mirror of the contemporary mindset. The texts and cultural objects under analysis in this thesis are in many ways embodiments of the ambivalence surrounding constructions of women both as social subjects and artistic objects in Victorian Britain. As I shall espouse, mixed attitudes towards women in burlesque reflected, as witness and chronicle of its own time, the social turmoil which was involved in the remapping of the role of women in modern societies. This thesis is structured into three chapters which cover at length the different aspects considered for my analysis. After an introductory section on methodology and critical antecedents, the chapter ‘Classical Mythology and the Evolution of Burlesque’ focuses on the terminological issues surrounding the comic theatre of the nineteenth century. Responses to the meaning and nature of Victorian burlesque are multifarious both in the nineteenth, the twentieth and the present century. As I shall argue, only a holistic consideration of the genre allows for the recognition of the role of burlesque as precedent of mass communication in the formation of modern cultures. The chapter proceeds with an analysis of the history of Victorian classical burlesque focused on particular works which evidence the topicality and ambivalence of the genre. The second chapter, entitled ‘Women and Cassandra in the Nineteenth Century’, analyses Victorian refigurations of the Cassandra myth in a two-fold approach. First, I focus on nineteenth-century translations of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon and Homer’s Iliad to map out the linguistic choices which juxtapose Cassandra with contemporary popular stereotypes such as prophets, witches and fortune-tellers. Second, I consider the ideological development underlying Victorian reworkings of the Cassandra myth both in highbrow and popular culture highlighting aspects such as the relationship between women and knowledge. A cross-class and crosscultural analysis of Victorian revisitings to the Cassandra myth evidences the profoundly intertwined dialogue between the socio-cultural substrata of the receiving culture and the Greek prototypes. Less canonical refigurations pave the ground to a responsive Cassandra who defies the ruling powers foreshadowing the collection of political female voices of the late years of the century. The third chapter delineates the presence of Cassandra in Victorian burlesque from its eighteenth-century precedents on the British street-theatre and the French stage. Once the literary antecedents of the burlesque Cassandra are established, the chapter moves on to the analysis of the case study of Robert Reece’s Agamemnon and Cassandra; or, the Prophet and Loss of Troy (1868). Reece’s burlesque is contextualized within the dramatic production of the author and then examined under the lens of the ambivalence of burlesque. The evolution of the depiction of Cassandra in the comic stage from Settle to Reece manifests the mixed responses to the gradual integration of women into the cultural structures of modern societies. The conclusions of the present thesis elaborate upon the metaphors of Cassandra which explain and account for the ambivalent representations of women in Victorian burlesque. Burlesque refigurations of the Cassandra myth epitomize the double standards which mould, measure and value the role of women in Victorian arts and culture. The recurring iteration of the motifs and images encompassed in the Cassandra metaphors of the Victorian woman evidence the need to unveil the ongoing dialogue between present and past civilizations in order to apprehend the cultural processes which have shaped modern societies.

Gender, identity and tradition in meera syal, Nisha minhas and B.K. Mahal: Lights and Shadows in unwritten rules of conduct

Blasco Llopis, Milagro 05 October 2009 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is the analysis of the female characters, members of the second generation, created by Meera Syal, Nisha Minhas and B. K. Mahal from the point of view of discourse and gender identity in a context of multiculturalism and culture clash like the British. I propose a reading of their books as a metaphor of conduct books following Armstrong and Tennenhouse (1987), and which point to the construction of new models of femininity. The reasons for having chosen these authors and works are of a different kind. All of them are female writers born in England but whose parents came from the Indian Subcontinent. As such not only are they aware of contemporary British society but they are also direct heirs of the attitude concerning first generation Indians. They are also more sensitive as to the role of women, their identity and the importance of their struggle to gain their own ground and break with all the expectations, stereotypes and demands made on them in social terms. In Chapter 1 the focus of attention is laid on the selection of some issues that better approached the reading of the primary bibliography along the line of conduct books as far as identity, gender and ideology are concerned. The treatment of issues from the point of view of British Asian women as direct receptors of a dual message and the female writers’ desire to have their voices heard emphasise gender consciousness and polarisation in the reformulation of social and cultural roles, a polarisation forced by a strict social order which is symbolically changing from the silence and subjugation of its women to a system where the self prevails over traditional norms. Chapter 2 gathers some key issues on Indian culture as the frame within which to better understand its precepts and to situate and analyse the gender conflict in a dual culture, the British one. All the concerns derive from the maintenance of tradition and point to an indirect guide of conduct whose fulfilment is weakening and becoming subject to negotiation and rethinking on a social, cultural and political scale. Whereas in previous years the voice of women was silenced, what these female writers are doing is revealing the experiences of individuals not wishing to be known for the same submissiveness and culture barriers imposed on their mothers. Chapter 3 focuses on the possible terminology to refer to this new literature and the new projects aimed at the spread and knowledge of new writers from different ethnic communities. In Chapter four the discussion is organised around selected passages from the primary bibliography as the starting point for analysis and comparison with the theoretical accounts from chapters one and two. The preservation of the rules historically dictated by tradition is being challenged and redefined not without a set of subsequent conflicts and controversies of what means living between two worlds-the Hindu -Sikh heritage and a new dual British identity. A perspective is provided by the reality of the Indian household and another one by the outside world. Even within the same family, the battle between tradition and contemporaneity is observed on the diversity of opinions. Consequently, the challenge of power relations is being redefined in the micro context of the Indian household so as to transfer it to the community first and then to a more global sphere. Given the difficulty to achieve personal fulfilment the female characters create their own strategies of survival. With this not only do they offer a new and modified discourse on the pillars of Indian culture but also a new reading of the existing stereotypes.

Torres Chalk, Gabriel 24 May 2003 (has links)
Sumary:This PhD Thesis depicts, analyses, and delves into the great and powerful chord that Robert Lowell's poetics represent within contemporary North American literature. My approach to Robert Lowell's imagery system starts from an initial reflection on the Tragic Sequence underlying Shakespeare's poetics as analyzed by Ted Hughes in his work Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being (1994). Gradually, I have delved into the romantic processes that deal with the projection of the world of privacy and intimacy into their universal sphere. Achilles' feelings are no longer an outburst or overflow of anger, but rather a deep feeling of madness and alienation.Lowell's work implies a deep revision of the main cultural traditions of occidental civilization. It is a process of re-invention of the Tragic Equation as a recreation of the Iliad, developing an extremely complex imaginary sequence. The orchestra's director who has been guiding my critical approach has been Herman Melville, a great challenge that led me to read in Lowell a threefold permanent tragic sequence: Shakespeare in Melville and the latter in Lowell. In short, processes that wading across psychological collapses (Construction and Deconstruction of the Hero Demens) have been translated into the modulation and transfiguration of those myths with which Robert Lowell has identified since a map of re-readings and re-writings generating the cancellation of the conventions of time. It has been a journey that has transfigured my role as literary critic into a kind of Shakespearean "chorus" following John Berryman's concept of "confession". And here Henry V and Paradise Lost have shaped my prelude or overture, the stage where to proceed to my story, creating an imaginary space that shapes a bridge between contemporary voices and registers and classical myths as seen and expressed through Robert Lowell's ventriloquial voice. Concepts such as "Poetry of Psychological Pressure" as defined by M. L. Rosenthal and "Tragic Existence" as defined by Arthur Schopenhauer interpreting pain as a way of knowledge have been fully discussed in the light of Lowell's "aesthetics of pain and guilt". Progressively my analysis of the de-construction of the Hero Demens and Lowell's "spatial poetics" developed in his Life Studies (1959) led me to the sequences of his maturity. Regarding the analysis of his last poetic sequence, Day by Day (1977), I dealt with the methodically calculated transfiguration of the poet from Aquilles into Ulyses, displacing the centre of gravity of what we have defined as the "conflicting structural axis" (in Robert Lowell's system of imagery) of the sublime enthusiasm (and according to literary relevance, my critical discourse as well) towards the serene reflection, plastic, circular and retrospective in cohesion with the reflective art of Jan Van Eyck and the intimate meditations of Jan Vermeer.

Grammar learning through strategy training: A classroom study on learning conditionals through metacognitive and cognitive strategy training

Viñes Gimeno, Vicenta 26 September 2002 (has links)
SUMARYThe main aim of this doctorate research is to design an instructional model- a macro-grammar strategy- which combines grammar and strategy researchers' contributions to help foreign language learners learn an L2 more autonomously. However, this research is specially motivated by our concern about the poor results which Spanish secondary school students achieve in Spanish schools in their written exams, since passing a written exam to get into university is these students' main objective. The reasons for this failure may be due to an excessively communicative approach and too wide a variety of students sharing the same classroom. Therefore, though the purpose of this research is to help all students to learn grammar more autonomously thanks to their acquisition of metacognitive (selective attention, self-monitoring and self-evaluation) and cognitive strategies (elaboration, induction, translation, deduction, repetition and transfer), this study is specially concerned about unsuccessful learners who lack or do not apply the metacognitive and cognitive strategies necessary to learn grammar and transfer their acquired knowledge to the acquisition of new grammatical structures, since this model may enable students to learn on their own and improve their attitude towards foreign language learning. Our research is based on cognitive theory of learning. The theoretical background which supports our research attempts to demonnstrate how cognitive theory of learning manages to explain how learning, an L2, grammar and strategies, are learnt; and how the automatization of grammar and strategies helps students learn an L2. According to this approach the learner becomes an active organizer of incoming information and an L2 acquisition is seen as the acquisition of a complex, cognitive skill in which the learning of grammar plays an important role and LS facilitate its learning (McLaughlin, Rossman, and McLeod, 1983). This cognitive approach also states that grammar and learning strategies (LS) are complex skills; and explains how a skill is learnt so that the learning of an L2, grammar and LS can be understood. Thus, Anderson's (1980) theory of knowledge acquisition, McLaughlin's (1987), Schmidt's (1990), Sharwood-Smith's (1993), Long's (1998), Dekeyser's (1998), and Skehan's (1999) position on grammar learning and Wenden's (1987) and O'Malley et al.'s approach to LS manage to complement each other and offer an appropriate theoretical framework for designing an instructional model in which strategy training enables students to learn a grammatical structure and transfer this knowledge to the learning of other structures. The automatization of grammatical items is believed to take place when formally learned grammatical items have been explicitly noticed, have been structured into working hypotheses and have been proceduralized/automatized through practice in context (e.g. McLaughlin, 1987; Schmidt, 1990; Johnson, 1994; Batstone, 1994). And by using metacognitive strategies- planning, monitoring and evaluating strategies- students can come to understand that they have power over their own learning (Chamot and O'Malley, 1996: 266); and the combination of these metacognitive strategies with cognitive strategies- mental steps which involve interacting with the material- will also facilitate learners to learn grammar on their own. The two main hypothesis of this research are that students, specially fair and poor learners, following the grammar strategy instruction will acquire the 2nd conditional structure better than the students who do not follow this instruction: that is to say, their results in the 1st post-test, 2nd post-test, and final post-test will be better. And that the experimental group students, specially poor and fair learners, will transfer their way of acquiring 2nd conditionals to another grammatical structure, in this case the 3rd conditionals, better than the students who do not follow this instruction. Next, the method to be followed in our empirical work is explained. This research in which 60 subjects- 30 experimental subjects and 30 control subjects- participated has been conducted in "Luis Vives" secondary school in Valencia during the school year 2000-2001. Their textbook, their teacher and the conditions under which they study English are the same and their standard is low-intermadiate. Due to the great range of results which students get in the pre-test and their last year's results participants are ranked into three subgroups- good, fair and poor (Izumi and Bigelow, 2000: 248). Students also fill in three metacognitive questionnaires, which analyse students' characteristics, objectives, difficulties, and strategies used to learn grammar, before instruction takes place so that the homogeneity of both groups can be established. Our instructional model combines the explicit training of metacognitive and cognitive strategies when practising comprehension, consciousness-raising, controlled and spontaneous written grammar activities- filling in the blanks with the right tenses, correcting mistakes, rewriting, translating from Spanish into English and writing- on the learning of 2nd conditional sentences in the foreign language classroom. Since it is acknowledged that neither a forms-based instruction nor meaning-based instruction alone can lead to SLA (Doughty and Williams, 1998: 11), our approach is eclectic and combined. Our strategy training is provided in four sessions in three weeks running in January. The declarative knowledge about the 2nd conditional, their induction, practice in controlled and spontaneous written activities, and immediate feedback is provided in each session, while metacognitive and cognitive strategies are practised. Students' answers in the metacognitive questionnaires and their results in the pre-test and four post-tests are analysed following statistical procedures so that we can be more certain of the reliability of the results. A previous pilot study (Viñes, 2000) was also carried out so that possible deficiencies could be avoided, and results could be compared. The results obtained in the two short-term and long-term post-tests confirm our first hypotheses; our instructional model helped learners, specially unsuccessful learners, to learn the 2nd conditional. And the results of the "Discovering the 3rd conditional" test confirms our 2nd hypothesis; our instructional model helped experimental, specially unsuccessful learners, to transfer the knowledge acquired in learning the 2nd conditional to the learning of the 3rd conditionals. However, the results which students get are not 100% correct in all the different activities, that it is why, it is considered that they are still in the associative stage of learning in relation to their learning of 2nd and 3rd conditional sentences, and metacognitive and cognitive strategies. More spontaneous written activities and more strategy training sessions should have been provided in order to help them get to the autonomous stage of learning. Thus, the results of the four post-tests offer relevant empirical evidence on the effectiveness of our instructional model to help learners, specially unsuccessful learners to improve their inductive ability, acquire declarative knowledge, and transfer the declarative knowledge acquired in learning the 2nd conditional to the learning of the 3rd conditional. Finally, some pedagogical implications, which can be specially useful to help secondary school students learn an L2, are suggested. First of all, encouraging students to work on their own in silence may aid poor learners in performing activities. Secondly, providing strategy training which combines metacognitive and cognitive strategies is essential. Thirdly, adapting the material to student's level, and allowing the L1 to be used in the classroom when needed may encourage students to learn. Fourthly, providing smaller amounts of new information in meaningful contexts, but allowing students to discover it, make it explicit, practise it immediately and get feedback, may allow students to perceive learning grammar as a rewarding game because they can be aware of their success. Moreover, repeating this material applied in different contexts within long intervals of time may help all learners to acquire the new structures since different opportunities for their learning are provided. This doctorate research presents the findings of an empirical study carried out in a Spanish secondary school to test the effectiveness of an instructional model designed to help these secondary school students, specially the unsuccessful ones, learn grammar more autonomously and improve their attitude towards foreign language learning. First, the theoretical background which supports our empirical work is described. Anderson (1980, 1981, 1982, 1983), Anderson and Fincham (1994) and Anderson et al.'s (1997) theory of knowledge acquisition, McLaughlin (1987), Schmidt (1990), Sharwood-Smith (1993), Long (1998), Dekeyser (1998), and Skehan's (1999) position on grammar learning and Wenden (1987) and O'Malley and Chamot's (1990) approach to learning strategies complement each other, and offer an adequate framework for designing an instructional model which combines the explicit training of metacognitive and cognitive strategies when practising controlled and spontaneous written grammar activities on the learning of 2nd conditional sentences in the foreign language classroom. Second, the description of our empirical work follows. The experimental and control subjects' characteristics, the description of our instructional model, its instruction, the short-term and long term post-tests taken, and the statistical tests applied on the students' answers make up this description. Third, relevant empirical evidence on the effectiveness of our instructional model to help learners, specially unsuccessful learners to improve their inductive ability, acquire declarative knowledge, and transfer the declarative knowledge acquired in learning the 2nd conditional to the learning of the 3rd conditional are presented and discussed. Finally, some pedagogical implications, which can be specially useful for secondary school teachers when helping secondary school students learn an L2, are suggested.

Alberola Colomar, Pilar 26 June 2002 (has links)
In the present study we analyse 120 bank leaflets obtained from Spanish banks and banks located in The British Islands. The corpus is formed by 60 leaflets written in English and 60 written in Spanish, which were available to the public in 1999. Leaflets selected cover the following topics: savings, insurance and loans. The study aims at the genre analysis of the above mentioned leaflets in order to find a prototypical macrostructure for this genre. Taking this structure as basis, we analyse the different elements of persuasion in these advertising instruments. We also carry out a contrastive analysis (bank leaflets written in English and Spanish) to check the influence of the European financial market globalisation on the bank leaflets writing. Results obtained in this contrastive analysis show, particularly, the extent of the financial globalisation influence on the cultural variety present in advertising. Furthermore, bank leaflets are not the only documents included in the advertising campaigns of the financial entities; consequently, in the present thesis we compare the genre analysis developed on bank leaflets with genre studies carried out on other advertising instruments, especially, advertisements and promotional letters. After studying the genre structure proposed by Vestegaard and Schroeder (1985), Bhatia (1991, 1993) and Kathpalia (1992) for different advertising documents, we were able to devise a trial model to apply on 20 bank leaflets selected at random. With the results obtained, we designed a proposal of macrostructure for bank leaflets as a genre. This macrostructure is the basis of the analysis of the definitive corpus. This analysis can be divided into the following stages: firstly, we study the frequency of the moves identified in the macrostructure of the leaflets; secondly, we analyse the order in which those moves are organised; finally, considering the role of each move in the readers persuasion, we study the verbal and visual elements involved in customers' persuasion.

Gaspar Verdú, Mª Victoria 04 October 2002 (has links)
The aim of this tesis is confirming the influence of the german epic dramatist B.Brecht on the british dramatist Edward Bond. The title of this work is Influence of brechtian stage on the british Theatre: Edward Bond. On chapter one we analise Brecht's main teoretical scripts, titled On Theatre I, II, III, and we extract the main features and tools of Brecht's epic theatre. It helps us to understand the differences between the brechtian epic theatre and naturalist theatre. At the beginning of the twentieht century, Brecht was seeking for a new kind of theatre with new themes and a new effect on the public. This effect is making the public to think about the action and being critic. We analice some brechtian theater masterpieces and we see that naturalist theatre and epic theatre are opposite in relation to themes, aesthetic and didactic aim. In Brecht's epic theatre there is Verfremdungseffect, a new use of music and light, there are bare stages and no causal relation between the scenes. On capter two, titled B.Brecht and E. Bond, we look for the relation between both writers. How did E. Bond learn about Brecht's epic theatre? did he see any epic masterpiece?. Where did E. Bond make exercices about brechtian setting?.On chapter tree we will find a similar didactic basis on both writers. Bond calls his theatre 'rationalist theatre', and makes the public conscient of violence in our society. Bond sees violence as a growing problem in our society and tries to show the danger of violence. On chapter four we make a comparison between two masterpieces, Der Kaukasische Kreidekreis and Narrow Road to the Deep North. We find their very similar setting, their common way of acting, their same strategies and almost the same persons. So we can firmly state ,there is a brechtian influence on some Bond's theater pieces.

Dolz i Ferrer, Enric 04 February 2004 (has links)
This Doctoral Thesis is centred upon the edition, both critical and diplomatic, of Siervo libre de amor, the romance written by Juan Rodríguez del Padrón around 1440.The pertinence of such a task will be clear for anybody familiarised with the present state of studies and editions on this work. The unsolved problems of interpretation made it compulsory to try to define the text lexically and to gather as much information as possible in order to establish the text sintactically. The punctuation decisions to be made are far from simple, as the least variation induces grossly different meanings. The diplomatic edition was undertaken with a view to put these problems in the right direction, allowing the reader to decide which course would be best to take at every step. The same can be said of the glossary that accompanies the critical edition and the editorial apparatus through which the reader will be able to ascertain the different ways which editors have chosen when confronted with problems of readership. In that respect I must recognise that my edition goes on the conservative side. The editions are accompanied by a series of different papers, some more closely knit than others, on problems that stem from the very complexities of the text, beginning with the biography of the author, of which not much is really known. Among other aspects not usually dealt with by the critics, these papers deal with the symbolic world of representation, the links between history and romance, the use of geography, heraldry, medicine, etc. Probably more important is the chapter in which philosophy and theology are investigated to reveal a profoundly Franciscan penchant that pervades the whole novel and the dialectic relation that both parts of the novel, the biographical part and the romance proper, keep, enhancing the richness of reading and the complexities of interpretation.

Gómez Devis, Mª Begoña 05 December 2003 (has links)
This survey is one more sample of the investigations which are being carried out in different geographical areas of Spain and Latin-America on lexical availability. They are integrated in the panhispanic project whose final objective is to elaborate a dictionary of lexical usage of the Spanish language. The aims of the study are threefold: firstly, it describes the lexical usage of Spanish in the province of Valencia by applying quantitative procedures of lexico-statistics and presents the inventory of available lexis; secondly, according with the quantity and quality assumptions of variationist socio-linguistics, it analyses the co-variation between the different social factors of sex, habitual language, type of school, place of residence, socio-cultural level and the obtained lexical results, which allows us to determine the sociolectal stratification of this community; thirdly, following the orientations of psycholinguistics, it shows the degree of qualitative convergence amongst the conceptual associations which the Spanish-speaking and Catalan-speaking groups establish upon the same stimuli within the sixteen topics. Finally, it must be mentioned as most relevant conclusions that; remarkable differences can globally be observed in the lexical productivity within the different topics; also, that the most discriminating socio-logical variable is the type of school, followed by socio-cultural level and sex; and that the degree of global convergence of nuclear and proto-typical terms in both languages is quite high within the sixteen topics, about 75%.

Tamarit Vallés, Inmaculada 07 November 2003 (has links)
The prototypical Spanish women recurrently found in the French novel, particularly since the nineteenth century, is one of a dark, sensual woman driven by uncontrolled passions. This view goes back to the eighteenth century model which we believe draws from the travel literature, a literary genre of its own that was popular at the time. The illustrated view of travel and women permeates the travellers' perception of Spanish life and, as the century progresses, the travellers will become more interested in capturing the reality of contemporary Spain. Their stories provide not only a description but also a personal interpretation of the life of Spanish women. With a view to creating a portrayal of women from different angles, we have compiled a corpus of seven books of voyages to Spain, published between 1691 and 1797. These stories present a prototypical female figure built out of superimposed models, presenting basically the most distinct features that characterize Spanish women. A more dynamic study shows how the discourse articulated by these writers/travellers revolves substantially around the special relationship that the women have with the opposite sex and also around their peculiar love rituals. This portrayal of the Spanish woman seduces the traveller and has earned a place in the French imagery. Within the stereotype depicting Spain as a passion-ridden country, Spanish women appear to embody the most exalted manifestation of the southern temperament. But there is a play on ambiguity that adds an air of ignorance and devotion to their otherwise diabolic and seductive nature. This duplicity makes the Spanish woman all the more fascinating to the traveller.Together with the details present in the static characterization of the Spanish woman and which are now an essential constituent of her image, the French travellers include in their books a number of features that will be further developed in the literary characters found in later French novels. Together they will compose the española type which has lasted even to this day.

Solaz Frasquet, Lucía 09 December 2003 (has links)
This doctoral thesis studies the characteristics of Tim Burton's cinema. It relates his work to his life, examines his situation into the contemporary Hollywood industry and considers the constant elements that form his visual poetic. It studies the question and contradictions of film genres and the Theories of Authorship. It examines the characteristics of Postmodern culture and the particular intertextual practice in Burton's films. It contemplates the fantastic phenomenon, that is best regarded as an artistic mode from which a number of related genres emerge. It considers Tim Burton's cinema to be the heir of what is denominated the Gothic-expressionist Tradition, a movement whose spirit, aesthetics and vital position are in opposition to the rational attitude of Classicism. It discusses the way Tim Burton creates the fantastic space through a careful stage design and the music composed by Danny Elfman. The films Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas are analysed in depth in order to prove that Burton's emotive storylines, and the complexity and entity of his themes and characters, shift his films away from being mere exercises in style.
