A study of stiffness of steel bridge cross frames

Cross frames are critical components in steel bridge systems. Cross frames brace girders against lateral torsional buckling and assist in distributing live loads to girders during the service life of the bridge. In curved bridges, cross frames also serve as primary structural members in resisting torsion generated by the traffic loads. The conventional cross frames are often constructed in X- or K- type shapes with steel angle sections. However, the actual stiffness of these cross frames are not well understood or quantified, leading to potentially inaccurate prediction of bridge behavior and safety during construction and in service. Previous studies have shown the possibility of employing new sections, such as tubular members and double angles, in cross frame designs. In addition, a type-Z cross frame, or single diagonal cross frame was also found to be a potential use to simplify the design. However, the effectiveness of these innovative cross frame types has not been completely examined. And these new cross frames have yet compared with the conventional ones in terms of their stiffness and strength capacity. This dissertation documents the results of a study on the stiffness of various types of cross frame systems. Full size cross frames were tested to establish actual stiffness of the cross frames specimens. The tests results revealed a significant discrepancy between the actual measured stiffness and the stiffness calculated using methods commonly employed by bridge designers. The research showed that the major source of this discrepancy was eccentricity in the connection. The stiffness reduction was quantified by employing analytical derivation and finite element modeling. As a result, methods were developed to account for the stiffness reduction. / text

Structured numerical problems in contemporary applications

The presence of structure in a computational problem can often be exploited and can lead to a more efficient numerical algorithm. In this dissertation, we look at structured numerical problems that arise from applications in wireless communications and machine learning that also impact other areas of scientific computing. In wireless communication system designs, certain structured matrices (frames) need to be generated. The design of such matrices is equivalent to a symmetric inverse eigenvalue problem where the values of the diagonal elements are prescribed. We present algorithms that are capable of generating a larger set of these constructions than previous algorithms. We also discuss the existence of equiangular tight frames---frames that satisfy additional structural properties. Kernel learning is an important class of problems in machine learning. It often relies on efficient numerical algorithms that solve underlying convex optimization problems. In our work, the objective functions to be minimized are the von Neumann and the LogDet Bregman matrix divergences. The algorithm that solves this optimization problem performs matrix updates based on repeated eigendecompositions of diagonal plus rank-one matrices in the case of von Neumann matrix divergence, and Cholesky updates in case of the LogDet Bregman matrix divergence. Our contribution exploits the low-rank representations and the structure of the constraint matrices, resulting in more efficient algorithms than previously known. We also present two specialized zero-finding algorithms where we exploit the structure through the shape and exact formulation of the objective function. The first zero-finding task arises during the matrix update step which is part of the above-mentioned kernel learning application. The second zero-finding problem is for the secular equation; it is equivalent to the computation of the eigenvalues of a diagonal plus rank-one matrix. The secular equation arises in various applications, the most well-known is the divide-and-conquer eigensolver. In our solutions, we build upon a somewhat forgotten zero-finding method by P. Jarratt, first described in 1966. The method employs first derivatives only and needs the same amount of evaluations as Newton's method, but converges faster. Our contributions are the more efficient specialized zero-finding algorithms. / text

Experimental testing of a steel gravity frame with a composite floor under interior column loss

Progressive collapse research aims to characterize and quantify the behavior of different structural systems in events of extreme local damage caused by bombings to improve the performance of targeted structures and to protect occupants. The focus of the research program described herein is the performance of steel gravity frame structures with composite floor systems in column loss scenarios. The goal of the project is to contribute to the development of rational design guidelines for progressive collapse resistance and to assess any potential weaknesses in current design standards. This thesis presents the results of a series of tests performed on a steel frame structure with simple framing connections and a composite floor slab under interior column loss. The specimen was designed and constructed in accordance with typical design practices and was subjected to increasing uniform floor loads after static removal of the central column. No significant structural damage was observed up to a load equivalent to the ultimate gravity design load. Further testing was performed after the deliberate reduction of the capacity of the steel framing connections, ultimately resulting in total collapse of the specimen. / text

The mediated public debate of British National Identity cards 1915-2008

Within the growing field of surveillance studies, national identity cards and related issues have become an important research topic. Most research in this field, however, does not consider the role of media in the development of surveillance. This research examines the history of mediated public debates about identity cards in the U.K. In the U.K, since the Identity Cards Bill 2004, National Identity cards have been widely debated across the British national newspapers once again after several heated historical debates in WWI, WWII, and the 1990s. It is this thesis s purpose to analyze the role of the British national newspapers in generating support and resistance in the development of British national identity cards in the past one hundred years, respectively in 1915, 1919, 1939, 1951, and from 1994 to 2008. This thesis also seeks to find out the continuities and changes in the way British national newspapers influence the repeated introduction and withdrawal of identity cards over time. Specifically, by employing the methods of content and frame analysis, the thesis examines the actors involved in the mediated debate of British national identity cards, their argumentation, the frames underlying the argumentation and the themes appeared in the debates, in order to find out to what extent the British print media supported or opposed the identity cards over time.

Chassis calculations for Frame design

This is a Masters Thesis report of a project carried out at Scania AB in Södertälje. The project concerns rationalizing Chassis calculations for use in truck Frame design. The subject for analysis is a six-wheeled articulated truck, and the load cases under study is Lateral Loading, Frame Torsion and Vertical Load on Kingpin. Making robust deformation and stress models with a calculation time sufficiently short and accuracy consistently high for efficient design work is an arduous task. This report presents several approaches to tackle this type of problem. By means of simplifying contemporary modeling approaches and methods and automating the setup process, a method that enables short calculation iterations on a chassis frame of a truck is achieved. This is done using the Catia GAS framework in conjunction with several other licences commonly used by designers.

Discovering Bioactive Peptides and Characterizing the Molecular Pathways that Control Their Activity

Bioactive peptides constitute a major class of signaling molecules in animals and have been shown to play a role in diverse physiological processes, including hypertension, appetite and sleep. As a result, knowing the identity of these molecules and understanding the mechanisms by which they are regulated has basic and medical significance. In this dissertation, I describe the development and application of novel methods for discovering bioactive peptides and the molecular pathways that control their activity. Recent analyses of mammalian RNAs have revealed the translation of numerous short open reading frames (sORFs). However, it is unknown whether these translation events produce stable polypeptide products that persist in the cell at functionally relevant concentrations. In Chapter 1, I describe a study in which we used a novel mass spectrometry-based strategy to directly detect sORF-encoded polypeptides (SEPs) in human cells. This analysis identified 115 novel SEPs, which is the largest number of mammalian SEPs discovered in a single study by more than a factor of 25. We observed widespread translation of SEPs from non-canonical RNA contexts, including polycistronic mRNAs and sORFs defined by non-AUG start codons. We also found that SEPs possess properties characteristic of functional proteins, such as stable expression, high cellular copy numbers, post-translational modifications, sub-cellular localization, the ability to participate in specific protein-protein interactions and the ability to influence gene expression. Taken together, these findings provide the strongest evidence to date that coding sORFs constitute a significant human gene class. In chapter 3, I describe a study in which we combine quantitative in vivo peptidomics, classical biochemical experiments and pharmacological studies in animal models to elucidate the metabolism of the neuropeptide substance P in the spinal cord. We identified two physiological substance P metabolites: the N- terminal fragments SP(1-9) and SP(1-7). Focusing our efforts on the SP(1-9)- producing pathway, we determined that an activity sensitive to the inhibitor GM6001 is the dominant SP(1-9)-generating activity in the spinal cord. We also show that GM6001 treatment causes a nearly three-fold increase in endogenous substance P levels in the spinal cords of mice, highlighting the functional relevance of the pathway blocked by this inhibitor.

Developing sampling weights for complex surveys : an approach to the School Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) project

Sampling weights are recommended to be incorporated in surveys to compensate for the disproportionality of the sample with respect to the target population of interest. This report presents how to develop sampling weights for a population-based study where a sample was randomly selected and demonstrates the process of developing such sampling weights. We exemplify the development of sampling weights with a real research project entitled School Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) project. In this report, we first introduce the probability-based survey and related key concepts, such as sampling design, sampling frame and sampling weights. Then we discuss the sampling design and the construction of the sampling frame for the SPAN project. We next demonstrate the method and the process of developing the sampling weights for the SPAN project. Lastly, we present the results with an example. / text

Temperature, stress, and strength development of early-age bridge deck concrete

In bridge deck concrete, early-age cracking can lead to substantial serviceability and structural integrity issues over the lifespan of the bridge. An understanding of the temperature, stress, and strength development of concrete can aid determining the early-age cracking susceptibility. This project, funded by the Texas Department of Transportation, evaluated these properties for various bridge deck materials and mixture proportions. The research presented in this thesis involved a laboratory testing program that used a combination of semi-adiabatic calorimetry, rigid cracking frame, free shrinkage frame, and match cured cylinder testing program that allowed the research team to simulate the performance of common bridge deck mixture designs under hot and cold weather conditions. In this program, the semi-adiabatic calorimetry was used, with previously generated models, to generate the temperature profile of the mixture. The rigid cracking frame and free shrinkage frame were used to evaluate the restrained stress development and the unrestrained volume changes, respectively, under the simulated temperatures. The match-cure cylinder testing program allowed the research team to generate a strength development profile for the concrete mixtures under the various simulated temperature profiles. Results from the laboratory program revealed that in hot weather simulations, ground granulated blast furnace slag mixtures developed the lowest stress / strength ratios, and in cold weather simulations, Class F fly ash mixtures developed the lowest stress / strength ratios. In general, use of SCMs and limestone coarse aggregate results in mixtures that generate less heat and lower stress / strength ratios. Isothermal testing showed that shrinkage reducing admixtures were effective in reducing early-age strains from chemical shrinkage. In addition to the laboratory testing program, a field testing program was completed to measure the temperature development of four bridge decks during the winter and summer months. The recorded concrete temperatures and the effects of the environmental conditions at the time of the pour will aid in the calibration and validation of the temperature prediction component of ConcreteWorks for bridge deck construction. In addition, experience gained through these field pours resulted in an optimized instrumentation procedure that will aid in the successful collection of data in future projects. / text

Design and optimization of QoS-based medium access control protocols for next-generation wireless LANs

In recent years, there have been tremendous advances in wireless & mobile communications, including wireless radio techniques, networking protocols, and mobile devices. It is expected that different broadband wireless access technologies, e.g., WiFi (IEEE 802.11) and WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) will coexist in the future. In the meantime, multimedia applications have experienced an explosive growth with increasing user demands. Nowadays, people expect to receive high-speed video, audio, voice and web services even when being mobile. The key question that needs to be answered, then, is how do we ensure that users always have the "best" network performance with the "lowest" costs in such complicated situations? The latest IEEE 802.11n standards attains rates of more than 100 Mbps by introducing innovative enhancements at the PHY and MAC layer, e.g. MIMO and Frame Aggregation, respectively. However, in this thesis we demonstrate that frame aggregation's performance adheres due to the EDCA scheduler's priority mechanism and consequently resulting in the network's poor overall performance. Short waiting times for high priority flows into the aggregation queue resolves to poor channel utilization. A Delayed Channel Access algorithm was designed to intentionally postpone the channel access procedure so that the number of packets in a formed frame can be increased and so will the network's overall performance. However, in some cases, the DCA algorithm has a negative impact on the applications that utilize the TCP protocol, especially the when small TCP window sizes are engaged. So, the TCP process starts to refrain from sending data due to delayed acknowledgements and the overall throughput drops. In this thesis, we address the above issues by firstly demonstrating the potential performance benefits of frame aggregation over the next generation wireless networks. The efficiency and behaviour of frame aggregation within a single queue, are mathematically analysed with the aid of a M=G[a;b]=1=K model. Results show that a trade-off choice has to be taken into account over minimizing the waiting time or maximizing utilization. We also point out that there isn't an optimum batch collection rule which can be assumed as generally valid but individual cases have to be considered separately. Secondly, we demonstrate through extensive simulations that by introducing a method, the DCA algorithm, which dynamically determines and adapts batch collections based upon the traffic's characteristics, QoS requirements and server's maximum capacity, also improves e ciency. Thirdly, it is important to understand the behaviour of the TCP ows over the WLAN and the influence that DCA has over the degrading performance of the TCP protocol. We investigate the cause of the problem and provide the foundations of designing and implementing possible solutions. Fourthly, we introduce two innovative proposals, one amendment and one extension to the original DCA algorithm, called Adaptive DCA and Selective DCA, respectively. Both solutions have been implemented in OPNET and extensive simulation runs over a wide set of scenarios show their effectiveness over the network's overall performance, each in its own way.
