A Modified Orthogonalized Plane Wave Method for the Calculation of Band Structures in Transition Metals

Deegan, Ross Alfred 05 1900 (has links)

This thesis describes some modifications to the orthogonalized plane wave method designed to make the method applicable to calculating the band structure of transition metals. The procedure is to augment the basis set of OPW's by including functions which vanish in the interstitial regions but represent well the outer core functions and the d-band states near the nucleus. The method is applied to the transition metal niobium, with emphasis on the applicability of the procedure. The convergence of the method is discussed and the resulting band structure of niobium is presented.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A Study of Levels Populated in 166Er by the (3He,d) Reaction

Kubo, Hideo 10 1900 (has links)

The reaction 165Ho (3He,d) 166Er was studied using the University of Rochester Tandem Van de Graaff accelerator and an Enge-type split-pole magnetic spectrograph. The observed cross sections for the ground state rotational band and the gamma vibrational band were consistent with predictions based on the unified nuclear model. The population of the 1574 keV level was consistent with that expected for the K^π=4^-, 7/2-[523] + 1/2+[411] assignment obtained from decay scheme studies. The K^π=2^- octupole vibrational band based on the 1460 keV state was not populated as strongly as expected, indicating that the admixture of the 7/2-[523] - 3/2+[411] two proton state into this vibration is only about one-fifth as large as predicted by Soloviev et al.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Digital Latching Ferrite L-Band Phase Shifters

Suthers, Mark S. 11 1900 (has links)

The subject of this thesis is the design, fabrication and comparative testing of two prototype L-band ferrite digital latching phase shifters. One phaser is a variation of a design published by G.T. Roome and H.A. Hair, "Thin Ferrite Devices for Microwave Integrated Circuits", IEEE Trans. Microwave Theory Tech, vol. MTT-16 pp. 411-420, July 1968. The second design is original and is experimentally and theoretical compared to the first phaser. A comparative study was made because of technological difficulties in making these devices. Insertion losses of 2dB and an order of magnitude less than possible phase shift occurred because of inadequate production facilities. Thus, the comparative study gave a common mode error to the published device and the new device.

Also, the theory of ferrite microwave phasers and a discussion of a particular system application which prompted this study are included in this thesis.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

Accessibility and Pedagogical Value in Virtuosic American Trombone Solo Literature: A Performance Guide to "Divertimento for Trombone and Band" (2012) by Jack Stamp

Umholtz, Jeremiah L. 07 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is an examination of Divertimento for Solo Trombone and Wind Band by renowned wind band composer and conductor Jack Stamp. The result of this study is the illumination of a 21st-century composition for solo trombone and band that is made accessible for future performers, accomplished by constructing original musical exercises that are influenced by current trombone pedagogical materials that have either been edited, annotated or created by current performers and pedagogues such as Joseph Alessi, Brad Edwards and Michael Mulcahy. The piece also incorporates 20th -century American wind band influences. The careful selection of pedagogical materials serves the purpose of making this challenging solo accessible for the advanced academic trombonist and can serve as a template for surveying advanced literature of the present and future. Additionally, the pedagogical materials selected for use in this dissertation were considered based on their value in the present academic trombone repertory. Thus, this performance guide reflects on the validity of the modern trombone pedagogical literature to guide a performer's study, interpretation, and performance of a 21st-century work for solo trombone.

Time-Domain Evaluation of Atmospheric Ducting Effects on X-Band Propagation Over Water

Gallegos, Jack A 01 March 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) is the region of atmosphere that interacts with the ocean surface. The atmospheric variability (i.e. temperature and relative humidity) in this region can result in rapid changes in the refractive index with increasing height from the sea surface. The complex region can result in non-standard propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves beyond the horizon under atmospheric ducting conditions. However, when ducting layers are not present, EM waves are limited to line-of-sight transmission. Atmospheric ducting research is typically conducted using radio frequencies in the X-band (around 8-12 GHz) due to its impact on performance of marine radars at those frequencies. Studies typically examine levels of received signal power or effects on radar returns in ducting conditions, but often ignore the time-domain effects of ducting which can also affect communications link performance. In collaboration with the Coastal Observing Research and Development Center at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), the ducting research in this thesis uses a channel sounder that consists of a X-band transmitter which transmits a coded pseudorandom sequence and a software-defined radio (SDR) receiver. Both transmitter and receiver are GPS synchronized so that the time-domain cross-correlation between the TX and RX signals can be found. In theory, if atmospheric ducting is present, there will be multipath propagation, and the TX-RX cross-correlation indicates multiple “peaks”, indicating multiple arrival times. Conversely, if little to no ducting is present, then the cross-correlation indicates a single “peak”. The channel sounding was evaluated over several over-water communications links, involving fixed-path and variable range sea tests with a moving vessel to verify if this hypothesis is true. The expected ducting conditions were determined by in-situ refractive index measurements of the atmosphere. Results from testing showed multiple peaks when strong ducting was expected, but an extensive sea test in strong ducting conditions is needed to distinguish multipath from ducting from that of terrain reflections. Further work is also needed to determine the computational model that accurately models multipath propagation through a duct, which is beyond the scope of this thesis.

I Am Not Frightened - Work for Wind Ensemble

Schultz, Brandon 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
I Am Not Frightened is a work for wind ensemble. This piece lasts around ten minutes and is inspired by confrontations with death and how to move past them. Musical inspiration comes from Pink Floyd, Greta Van Fleet, John Mackey, and James Stephenson. The title of the piece refers to the spoken lyrics found in Pink Floyd's “The Great Gig in the Sky” from their 1973 album The Darkside of the Moon. These lyrics come from the band asking Abby Road Studio workers while recording the album, if they are afraid of dying. A janitor named Gerry O’Driscoll provided the lyrics that inspired this piece: “And I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do, I don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it – you've got to go some time.” This thought process of accepting that death is as much a part of life as

NON-NUTRITIVE SERIAL VARNISH

Willhoit, Thomas O'Brien 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Non-Nutritive Serial Varnish is a song written and arranged for big band which explores several stylistic and compositional techniques developed during the 20th century. Serial techniques are used as the structural underpinning during melodic presentation. Eventually these serial structures work their way to the surface to reveal themselves as source material. The salient aesthetic, overarching form and harmony are derived from conventional jazz. The use of semi-improvised melodic modules is also employed.

Lundgren, Malin, Sandström Gulliksson, Tilde January 2024 (has links)

Hager, Sara January 2024 (has links)
