A Recursive Relative Prefix Sum Approach to Range Queries in Data Warehouses

Wu¡@, Fa-Jung 07 July 2002 (has links)
Data warehouses contain data consolidated from several operational databases and provide the historical, and summarized data which is more appropriate for analysis than detail, individual records. On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) provides advanced analysis tools to extract information from data stored in a Data Warehouse. OLAP is designed to provide aggregate information that can be used to analyze the contents of databases and data warehouses. A range query applies an aggregation operation over all selected cells of an OLAP data cube where the selection is specified by providing ranges of values for numeric dimensions. Range sum queries are very useful in finding trends and in discovering relationships between attributes in the database. There is a method, prefix sum method, promises that any range sum query on a data cube can be answered in constant time by precomputing some auxiliary information. However, it is hampered by its update cost. For today's applications, interactive data analysis applications which provide current or "near current" information will require fast response time and have reasonable update time. Since the size of a data cube is exponential in the number of its dimensions, rebuilding the entire data cube can be very costly and is not realistic. To cope with this dynamic data cube problem, several strategies have been proposed. They all use specific data structures, which require extra storage cost, to response range sum query fast. For example, the double relative prefix sum method makes use of three components: a block prefix array, a relative overlay array and a relative prefix array to store auxiliary information. Although the double relative prefix sum method improves the update cost, it increases the query time. In the thesis, we present a method, called the recursive relative prefix sum method, which tries to provide a compromise between query and update cost. In the recursive relative prefix sum method with k levels, we use a relative prefix array and k relative overlay arrays. From our performance study, we show that the update cost of our method is always less than that of the prefix sum method. In most of cases, the update cost of our method is less than that of the relative prefix sum method. Moreover, in most of cases, the query cost of our method is less than that of the double relative prefix sum method. Compared with the dynamic data cube method, our method has lower storage cost and shorter query time. Consequently, our recursive relative prefix sum method has a reasonable response time for ad hoc range queries on the data cube, while at the same time, greatly reduces the update cost. In some applications, however, updating in some regions may happen more frequently than others. We also provide a solution, called the weighted relative prefix sum} method, for this situation. Therefore, this method can also provide a compromise between the range sum query cost and the update cost, when the update probabilities of different regions are considered.

Determination of traffic responsive plan selection factors and thresholds using artificial neural networks

Sharma, Anuj 15 November 2004 (has links)
Traffic congestion has become a menace to civilized society. It degrades air quality, jeopardizes safety and causes delay. Traffic congestion can be alleviated by providing an effective traffic control signal system. Closed-loop traffic control systems are an example of such a system. Closed-loop traffic control systems can be operated primarily in either of two modes: Time of Day Mode (TOD) or Traffic Responsive Plan Selection Mode (TRPS). TRPS mode, if properly configured, can easily handle time independent variation in traffic volumes. It can also reduce the effect of timing plan aging. Despite these advantages, TRPS mode is not used as frequently as TOD mode. The reason being a lack of methodologies and formal guidelines for predicting the factors and thresholds associated with TRPS mode. In this research, a new methodology is developed for determining the thresholds and factors associated with the TRPS mode. This methodology, when tested on a closed-loop system in Odem, Texas, produced a classification accuracy of 94%. The classification accuracy can be increased to 98% with a proposed TRPS architecture.

Flood control reservoir operations for conditions of limited storage capacity

Rivera Ramirez, Hector David 17 February 2005 (has links)
The main objective of this research is to devise a risk-based methodology for developing emergency operation schedules (EOS). EOS are decision tools that provide guidance to reservoir operators in charge of making real-time release decisions during major flood events. A computer program named REOS was created to perform the computations to develop risk-based EOS. The computational algorithm in REOS is divided in three major components: (1) synthetic streamflow generation, (2) mass balance computations, and (3) frequency analysis. The methodology computes the required releases to limit storage to the capacity available based on the probabilistic properties of future flows, conditional to current streamflow conditions. The final product is a series of alternative risk-based EOS in which releases, specified as a function of reservoir storage level, current and past inflows, and time of year, are associated with a certain risk of failing to attain the emergency operations objectives. The assumption is that once emergency operations are triggered by a flood event, the risk associated with a particular EOS reflects the probability of exceeding a pre-established critical storage level given that the same EOS is followed throughout the event. This provides reservoir operators with a mechanism for evaluating the tradeoffs and potential consequences of release decisions. The methodology was applied and tested using the Addicks and Barker Reservoir system in Houston, TX as a case study. Upstream flooding is also a major concern for these reservoirs. Modifications to the current emergency policies that would allow emergency releases based on the probability of upstream flooding are evaluated. Riskbased EOS were tested through a series of flood control simulations. The simulations were performed using the HEC-ResSim reservoir simulation model. Rainfall data recorded from Tropical Storm Allison was transposed over the Addicks and Barker watersheds to compute hypothetical hydrographs using HEC-HMS. Repeated runs of the HEC-ResSim model were made using different flooding and residual storage scenarios to compare regulation of the floods under alternative operating policies. An alternative application of the risk-based EOS in which their associated risk was used to help quantify the actual probability of upstream flooding in Addicks and Barker was also presented.

The Position and Developmentof the Naval Underwater Operation Unitin Taiwan¡¦s Marine Affairs ¡ÐTaking the Comparison between Taiwan and U.S. Systems as a Yardstick

Ma, Tao-Hsin 31 January 2008 (has links)
Naval Underwater Operation Unit (UOU), evolving from the Fleet Salvage Unit, is the only body specifically responsible for underwater operation under the Ministry of National Defense (MND). The mission of this Unit is to provide diving, salvage, mine counter-measurement, explosive ordnance disposal and diving training services to all armed forces and other government agencies. Since its establishment, UOU has been involved in many high visibility maritime distress operations over the years. UOU has a definite position and plays an important role in Taiwan¡¦s naval defensive warfare, maritime distress salvage, maritime pollution control and commercial diver training. With its professional capability and facilities, UOU has become the most capable governmental unit in diving and salvage in this country. To highlight its emphasis on marine affairs, the Executive Yuan established the ¡§National Council on the Advancement of Marine Affairs¡¨ on 7 January 2004 as a decision-making forum for marine affairs on the cabinet level. The adoption of the ¡§National Oceans Policy Guidelines¡¨ on 13 October 2004 and the formulation of the ¡§Program for the Development Planning of Marine Affairs¡¨ accordingly by this Council have set a new demarche to march towards an Ocean Nation for the country. Integration of government resources and cooperation among agencies are vital to the policy implementation. To implement the goals of national oceans policy and marine affairs development, government agencies should collaborate among themselves through resources integration. The main purpose of this study is to explore the position and development of the UOU in various domains of national marine affairs while the Government is making its effort to advance national oceans policy. To this end, this study examines the differences between the UOU and its equivalent units in the U.S. Navy from four perspectives, namely, organizational status, missions, capabilities and the relationship between these units and other government agencies, analyzes the needs imposed upon the UOU by various domains of national marine affairs, and then proposes the approaches for improving UOU¡¦s capabilities so as to fulfill the requirements of national marine affairs development.

A Research of the Relation between the Resources and Decisions of MNCs' Parent Firms and Its Subdiarys' Performance - With Foreign Banks' Taiwan Branches as an Example.

Tsung, Pei-lun 23 June 2008 (has links)
Former research on entry strategies are generally focused on finding the determining factors for MNCs' entry timing or entry mode. Albeit MNCs' ultimate reason of investing in foreign markets are gaining profits, number of papers discussing MNCs' strategies and the performance of their subsidiary are far away from representing its importance ¡V especially in the realm of service industries. Meanwhile, along with advanced technology and the trend of globalization, international trades are flourishing. Financial firms are as well in the bloom due to their job as being capital borrowers and lenders. In Taiwan, since the government allowed foreign banks to invest in 1964, foreign banks contributed much in breeding financial innovation and training professionals. Their performances are as well benchmarks for domestic banks. Combined with aforementioned backgrounds and motives, this thesis aims at discussing the relation between the resources and decisions of the foreign banks' parent firms and its Taiwan branches' performance in order to figure out the key factor affecting the performance of these banks' Taiwan branches. Thus, this study will serve foreign banks' Taiwan branches as samples and list resource condition variables of their parent banks according to OLI framework. The entry timing of these foreign banks is served as the strategy behavior variable. Via analyzing sample data before and after the Financial Holding Company Act and Merger and Acquisition of Financial Institutions Act with multiple regressions, this study intends to confirm the key factor affecting the performance of these banks' Taiwan branches. According to the results, the key factor would be entry timing. That is, regardless of the environmental challenges posed against these banks, the first mover advantage dominates in explaining the performance of these banks' Taiwan branches.

A Study on Asset Swap and Expansion Strategy for Taiwan Healthcare Industry

Chen, Chao-fei 18 July 2008 (has links)
This paper studies the innovation and strategy used by Tawan¡¦s small and medium size of hospitals and clinics to break the revenue control by national health insurance. We found that to increase the competitive advantage and to compete with the non-for-profit hospital conglomerates, many small and medium size of hospitals and clinics either form alliance with other clinics or conduct chain operation to enjoy the economy of scale and economy of scope. Through case studies, this paper found the many characteristics for a successful healthcare chain operation to succeed in Taiwan. We found that the chain operation needs to have enough resource to expand on her own or need to have enough incentive for the franchisee to join the franchise organization. One effective attraction provided by the franchise organization is to have an effective training platform for the franchisees to grow their business. Another key factor for a healthcare franchise organization to succeed is the ability to do vertical integration within the same chain operation. Conducting asset swap with franchisee¡¦ hospital or clinic and let franchisees own part of the franchise organization¡¦s stock are effective strategy to attract independent hospital or clinic to join the franchise organization. Therefore, a successful healthcare franchise organization will almost want to pursue a stock listing in Taiwan or abroad. In particular, we study the business models for Missioncare medical group in Taoyuan and Darwin healthcare group in Taichung and Dr. Wells group in Taipei. Both Darwin and Dr. Well operate successful chain operation for dental clinics in Taiwan. We compare and contrast their business models and through the financial analysis, we summarize the pros and cons for each business model. Our key contribution for this paper is to identify the key factors for a Medical chain operation to succeed in Taiwan. Once the profitable business model is established, new hospitals or clinics could be set up quickly based on existing models and expenditures could be minimized through joint procurement and resource sharing.

A Study of Managerial Competencies Training Effectiveness of Supervisory Management.

Yang, Ya-Lan 13 July 2009 (has links)
Since global economy is getting worse for two years, the banking industry is much worse than any other industry especially. Human capital becomes the strength of companies for surviving. In addition, it is a challenge for companies to train and retain the talents depending upon limited resources and fund. However, it is a critical issue to evaluate whether training programs work and raise the organization performance. Therefore, we are going to discuss if the performance of supervisor is improved after the supervisors took the training programs of management competency. This research method is based on questionnaires. According to the result, trainees satisfied with the settlement of courses. Moreover, direct managers are satisfied with the improvement of performance of those supervisors who took the training courses. Within the dimensions, we found that the performance of communication improved the most. Supervisors play an intermediate role to facilitate the performance of corporations. The improvement of communication can help the performance of supervisors. Additionally, the ability of communication is an important trait for supervisors to get promoted. The research result follows the research hypothesis. The results show that the satisfaction of training course settlement has obvious positive influence on effectiveness of management competency. The Gamma is .33(P<.05). The results show that it is effective for companies raise management abilities of employees by spending time and money in training programs.
