Detection of structural and numerical chromosomal abnormalities by ACM-FISH analysis in sperm of oligozoospermic infertility patients.

Brinkworth, Martin H., Nieschlag, E., Schmid, Thomas E., Wyrobek, A.J., Slater, E., Hill, F., Marchetti, F., Kamischke, A. January 2004 (has links)
No / Modern reproductive technologies are enabling the treatment of infertile men with severe disturbances of spermatogenesis. The possibility of elevated frequencies of genetically and chromosomally defective sperm has become an issue of concern with the increased usage of ICSI, which can enable men with severely impaired sperm production to father children. Several papers have been published reporting aneuploidy in oligozoospermic patients, but relatively little is known about chromosome structural aberrations in the sperm of these patients. METHODS: We examined sperm from infertile, oligozoospermic individuals for structural and numerical chromosomal abnormalities using a multicolour ACM fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay that utilizes DNA probes specific for three regions of chromosome 1 to detect human sperm that carry numerical chromosomal abnormalities plus two categories of structural aberrations: duplications and deletions of 1pter and 1cen, and chromosomal breaks within the 1cen¿1q12 region. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in the average frequencies of sperm with duplications and deletions in the infertility patients compared with the healthy concurrent controls. There was also a significantly elevated level of breaks within the 1cen¿1q12 region. There was no evidence for an increase in chromosome 1 disomy, or in diploidy. CONCLUSIONS: Our data reveal that oligozoospermia is associated with chromosomal structural abnormalities, suggesting that oligozoospermic men carry a higher burden of transmissible, chromosome damage. The findings raise the possibility of elevated levels of transmissible chromosomal defects following ICSI treatment.

Polarization analysis of elliptical fibers by the analytic mode matching method

Fu, Li-ping 08 July 2005 (has links)
Dielectric waveguides are important passive devices in optical communication systems. Circular-core fibers with slight ellipticity may lead to polarization-mode dispersion. A clear understanding of the propagation characteristics of the elliptical fibers thus becomes important for theoretical as well as practical purposes. Although mesh-dependent methods such as the finite-element method or finite-difference method, can be used to study such a complex structure, its computational task is very high. Strictly speaking, mesh-based solution does satisfy the Helmholtz equation and the solution only provided four to five significant digits. On the other hand, the highly accurate solution based on solving the Helmholtz equation of the elliptical coordinate system spend most its computational resources on computing the functional value and the zeros of the modified Mathieu functions of the first kind. Our method is based on linear combination of the exact mode-field solutions of the dielectric optical fiber. We apply the analytical continuity principle to obtain the simultaneous equation of the expansion coefficient vector. Since each basis solution satisfies the Helmholtz equation exactly, the overall solutions are very accurate and provide more than six significant digits for fibers with small elliptical eccentricity. In addition, only the Bessel functions are needed in our computation. Using cylindrical coordinate and symmetry, together with ACM principle, we simplify the problem of modal analysis of dielectric elliptical waveguides. This method also can be applied to some regular polygonal dielectric waveguides such as the large area VCESL.

The role of accounting information and the relevance of IFRS : an international survey of financial officers, financial analysts and auditors / Le rôle de l'information comptable et de la pertinence des IFRS : une enquête internationale sur des agents financiers, des analystes financiers et des auditeurs

Benetti, Cristiane 20 June 2011 (has links)
The main objective of this study is to determine how individuals involved in the accounting process view the role of accounting information in an economic environment where capital markets are dominant. The study also attempts to determine whether International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) play a part in fulfilling this role. To this end, we compare the perceptions of financial officers, financial analysts and auditors from two distinctly different market environments, using Europe as a proxy for a highly developed capital market environment and Brazil as a proxy for a less developed capital market environment. By means of a survey, we want to identify whether producers of accounting data (financial officers), users of that data (financial analysts), and controllers of accounting information (auditors) share the same views on the usefulness and goals of the financial accounting process. Extending the study to several countries is a potential means for determining whether and how the economic environment affects the respondents' views of accounting information. Our survey instrument was validated in three languages (English, French and Portuguese) and applied in six groups of countries (one for Brazil, four distinct groups for European countries and one for other voluntary participants). We used descriptive statistics and multivariate correspondence analysis (MCA) to analyze and interpret the results. Our results suggest that the activity of our respondents has less influence on their answers than the country they work in.

The role and value of ethical frameworks in software development

Dodd, Sean January 2003 (has links)
Software development is notorious for failure, typically defined as over budget, late delivery and/or poor quality of new information systems (IS) on project completion. The consequences of such failure can be enormous, particularly financially. As such, there is consensus by practitioners and academics alike that this practice is unacceptable. Yet with a variety of accepted development methods and tools available for use by software developers and project managers, there is still no significant reduction in the size or frequency of failure reported. In an attempt to understand the conflicts which arise in the development environment in which developers and project managers must operate, the research area is the role and value of ethics in the development of managed software projects. A definition of ethics in this context was provided by the IEEE/ACM Code of Ethics. Research was additionally conducted to understand how other professions and business areas define and enforce ethics in their respective working environments. These were (UK) Law, Finance, Retail and, law practice in the European Union. Interpretive research was then conducted to enable software development practices to be understood from the view of developers and project managers in industry. Unethical practices were then identified in a large IT company based in west London via a single, six month in-depth case study, with the data collected analysed via a series of repertory grids. Analysis and triangulation of the data collected via interviews, document analysis and observations led to an improved understanding of the causes of the unethical practices found. Conclusions and recommendations are then provided relating to implications for (a) the company participating in the research, (b) the application of the IEEE/ACM Code in industry (c) theory for ethicists.

Specifically , we use the multivariate technique of Multiple Correspondence Analysis ( MCA) , which estimates the IMP . Based on this indicator it is possible to find the ratio of the Poor - FGT ( 0 ) , intensity Poor - FGT ( 1 ) and Severity of Poverty - FGT ( 2 ) . Information PNADs were used in 2009 and 2012 . The results showed that the proportion of measured poverty , using multidimensional analysis for the region and the northeastern states in 2009 and 2012 is higher than the results obtained by dimensional analysis , using the same data , but based it is only in equities , as commonly underlie the criteria of one-dimensional technique. Thus , it became evident to be more objective use of the multidimensional method for the analysis of the problem , which , based on a larger common to the object number of variables analyzed , showed strongest results for the definition of the real level of poverty in that population.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / In recent decades, the importance given to the image sent out by the buildings through their facades has induced to improve the use of glass walls associated with high-tech coatings, and the ACM (Aluminum Composite Material) one of the most used materials on the facades "high- tech". As a consequence of factors such as fasten execution and the possibility of installation over other building coatings without the need for demolition, the ACM also has been used in facade`s reformation. However, 63.31% of the weights of the materials that compose the facade with ACM are made by aluminum, a material whose production demand high levels of consumption of energy and emits a huge amount of CO2. Therefore, based on the viewpoint of energy-environment, recycling represents an important resource in the quest for sustainability in this type of facade. On the other hand, there are obstacles in the waste recycling, such as the fact that the ACM is a composite which need to be delaminated for its components have a commercial value. As a result, in order to contribute for the studies on the environmental performance of facades, this paper presents the energy-environmental assessment of the facade with ACM considering recycling, for that reason, it was compared the values obtained of embodied energy and emissions CO₂ for the manufacture of a facade unit with ACM using primary and secondary raw material, with a purpose to evaluate the effective contribution of recycling in the decrease of these values. Also it was designed a flow of solid waste and of the agents that are involved in the recycling process of waste produced in the machining step of ACM panels and installation of facades, in order to demonstrate the main difficulties for the reintegration of these wastes in the production cycle of materials, considering the Brasilia`s context. The results showed that the facade with secondary raw materials produced may represent an energy saving of 78% and 73% less CO2 issue.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Daniela Sousa Guedes Meireles Rocha.pdf: 7525991 bytes, checksum: e5bf7e6cbbea752acfd4642380eda298 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-09-27 / Introduction: Civil construction uses a significant quantity of materials and consequently, if poorly managed, can culminate in tons of undue disposal. In this way, engineers become (co) responsible for bringing environmental sustainability into the daily life of their works, with optimization of materials, waste reduction and efficient and humanized manpower management. In order to do so, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can exert influence in the training of these professionals, being an agent that contributes to the transformation of the posture of the future engineer, and may arouse students' interest in sustainability related topics. Objectives: To evaluate the perception and commitment of Civil Engineering students from the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás (PUC / GO) based on the principles that guide sustainability, and to identify in the Curricular Matrices of Brazilian HEIs the quantitative of disciplines involving sustainability education and propose a possible change in the Curricular Matrix of PUC/GO. Methods: Descriptive, exploratory study of a quantitative-qualitative nature, whose research source was the application of the Survey questionnaire, using the Multiple Correspondence Analysis technique for analysis and statistical inferences. Results: Civil Engineering students from PUC/GO are mostly males (54%), aged 22 to 25 (57%) and have income between one and two minimum wages (37%). The research demonstrated that the students have knowledge by the subject "sustainability" and had access in the IES to contents that approach the sustainable development. However, not all future professionals are interested in developing skills based on sustainable guidelines. From the analysis of the curricular matrices of 163 Civil Engineering courses, it was verified that only (5.9%) of the subjects deal with sustainability, thus presenting the need for changes in the curricular matrix and in the syllabuses in the subjects, the which were suggested in this work. Conclusions: This research comprised that the student of Civil Engineering is said to possess little knowledge to act in accordance with the Sustainable Development (SD), and most appropriated the theme during the course of all their training as an individual and not necessarily during the course of graduation. The information obtained in this dissertation, associated with other research already done on the subject, proposes to the HEIs a review of their curricular matrices and contents, providing more suitable conditions for the learning of these future professionals, in relation to the issues of Sustainable Development.
