Evaluation of Student and Hospital Administrator Perceptions of Student Involvement in Completion of Community Health Needs Assessments

Olson, Julia, Griswold, Cassia, Hall-Lipsy, Elizabeth January 2016 (has links)
Class of 2016 Abstract / Objectives: The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate student perceptions of completing a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) and (2) determine hospital administrators’ awareness of potential student roles and interest in future student involvement in completing their mandated CHNA. Methods: Rural Health Professions Program (RHPP) participants who completed the CHNA course were emailed a link to a survey addressing demographics and satisfaction with the CHNA experience. Rural, not-for profit hospitals who were members of the Arizona Hospital and Health Care Association were selected for inclusion. Representatives from eligible hospitals completed a telephonic interview regarding their CHNA process, results, and interest in collaborating with RHPP students. Results: Twenty-nine students completed the survey (60% participation). In thematic analysis addressing overall satisfaction with the process, the top response was that it was a good learning experience (9 responses). Participants strongly agreed that communities can benefit from student involvement (65%) and 83% believed their CHNA could benefit the community. Of 19 eligible hospitals, 12 completed phone interviews (63% participation). The most commonly reported obstacles to completing a CHNA were: lack of resources, time, and community participation. Pharmacy was involved in the process at five of the facilities (41%). After describing the RHPP, 10 respondents indicated interest in student involvement in their CHNA (83%). Conclusions: There is potential for a mutually beneficial student-community collaboration, providing hospitals with additional resources while enhancing student engagement and community impact. This partnership could also increase pharmacy representation in the CHNA process, as less than half of hospitals reported pharmacy involvement.

Career paths, barriers, and professional experiences: a comparison study of African American community college presidents and white community college presidents

Bradley, Cedric Andreas 11 December 2009 (has links)
The community college is one of the most diverse institutions of higher learning in regards to the make-up of its student population. However, with such a large representation of diversity within its student population, the community college has not been as successful in diversifying the community college presidency. The purpose of this research study was to examine the career paths, barriers, and professional experiences of African American community college presidents and White community college presidents. A secondary purpose of this study was to examine potential recruitment strategies to recruit minority administrators. A total of 176 African American and White community college presidents were surveyed, and 105 (N = 105) surveys were used for the study. Fiftyive surveys were from White/Caucasian community college presidents and fifty surveys were from Black/African American community college presidents. A self-developed survey (Presidents’ Survey) was used to collect the data. Chi-Square, Analysis of Variance, frequencies, and percentages were used for data analysis. Results of the study indicate that African American and White community college presidents differ significantly in terms of marital status, graduation from a historically Black college or university (HBCU), make-up of student body at their institutions, location of their institutions, and in attendance of leadership development workshops. Results of the statistical analysis are presented in narrative and table form to answer the five research questions. The study concludes with a summary, conclusions, implications, and recommendations for further research.

Perceptions of the Supports and Professional Development for and needed by Novice School Administrators in Southwestern Virginia

Boone, Luke Elliott 25 March 2020 (has links)
The objective of this study was to describe the perceptions of the support and professional development activities for and needed by novice school administrators (NSAs) in southwestern Virginia. A qualitative methods research design was used to collect and examine data. The researcher interviewed 22 NSAs from 11 different public school divisions in the Virginia Department of Education's (VDOE's) Regions 6 and 7 in southwestern Virginia. An interview protocol consisting of 15 questions was used to collect data on the perceptions of the NSAs. From the research collected, a list detailing the support and professional development (PD) activities for NSAs in southwestern Virginia was created. The support and PD activities were grouped into the categories of (a) support and PD activities provided for NSAs, (b) effective support and PD activities provided for NSAs, (c) support and PD areas of need for NSAs, (d) support and PD activities that the NSAs provided for themselves, (e) factors limiting the support and PD of NSAs. The data collected from this study were strategically placed into a design of seven NSA support and PD areas that school divisions could utilize to create a program, or further develop a program for NSAs. Those areas correlated with the study's primary research question and the five primary sub-questions of the study. / Doctor of Education / The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions of the support and professional development (PD) activities for and needed by novice school administrators (NSAs) in southwestern Virginia. Perceptions of School Principals on the School Counselor Role

Rose, Caitlin Joanna 07 March 2019 (has links)
Throughout the past century, many changes in the conceptualization of the school counselor have occurred. Although most states endorse a national model developed through the American School Counseling Association (ASCA), not all school and district personnel have changed their views of the school counselor role to the most current conceptualization. The focus of this study was to gather current information on principal perceptions of appropriate and inappropriate school counselor activities based on the ASCA model. Differences were examined in principal perceptions at the elementary and secondary levels, and between appropriate and inappropriate activities to see if principals ranked appropriate activities more highly. Differences were also examined in schools with Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) designation and schools without RAMP designation. Results showed differences in perception between elementary and secondary principals, with secondary principals rating all counseling activities significantly higher than elementary school principals, although there were similarities in ratings between groups. Appropriate activities were rated significantly higher than inappropriate activities by principals overall as well as the elementary principal group and secondary principal group. There were no significant differences overall in RAMP versus non-RAMP school principal perceptions. Discussion includes reviewing specific activities where perceptions differed; how these results fit with previous research; and implications for policy and practice, future research, and higher education. / Doctor of Philosophy / Throughout the past century, many changes in the conceptualization of the role of the school counselor have occurred. Exploring Data Security Management Strategies for Preventing Data Breaches

Ofori-Duodu, Michael Samuel 01 January 2019 (has links)
Insider threat continues to pose a risk to organizations, and in some cases, the country at large. Data breach events continue to show the insider threat risk has not subsided. This qualitative case study sought to explore the data security management strategies used by database and system administrators to prevent data breaches by malicious insiders. The study population consisted of database administrators and system administrators from a government contracting agency in the northeastern region of the United States. The general systems theory, developed by Von Bertalanffy, was used as the conceptual framework for the research study. The data collection process involved interviewing database and system administrators (n = 8), organizational documents and processes (n = 6), and direct observation of a training meeting (n = 3). By using methodological triangulation and by member checking with interviews and direct observation, efforts were taken to enhance the validity of the findings of this study. Through thematic analysis, 4 major themes emerged from the study: enforcement of organizational security policy through training, use of multifaceted identity and access management techniques, use of security frameworks, and use of strong technical control operations mechanisms. The findings of this study may benefit database and system administrators by enhancing their data security management strategies to prevent data breaches by malicious insiders. Enhanced data security management strategies may contribute to social change by protecting organizational and customer data from malicious insiders that could potentially lead to espionage, identity theft, trade secrets exposure, and cyber extortion.
