The resilience of caregivers at a Gauteng-based hospice with patients living with HIV/AIDS

Mokoena, Rakgadi 09 1900 (has links)
In English / This study investigates the resilience of caregivers at a Gauteng-based hospice with patients living with HIV/AIDS. The primary focus of this study was to describe the impact on caregivers working with terminally ill patients predominantly with HIV/AIDS. Six participants were selected for this study utilising purposive sampling. Their ages ranged between 30 and 70 years. For the purpose of data collection, face-to-face semi-structured interviews were undertaken. In analysing data, the themes and sub-themes were extracted and presented by employing thematic analysis. The findings of this study revealed that in times of adversity and setbacks most caregivers utilise various skills to bounce back, and they still showed contentment in serving community members. However, caregivers have also voiced the concern that the support offered at work was not sufficient in meeting their needs. Recommendations for further research, on the resilience of caregivers when working with terminally ill patients is highlighted. / Psychology / M. A. (Clinical Psychology)

Knowledge and attitude towards voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) services among adolescent high school students in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Abraham Alemayehu Gatta 11 1900 (has links)
Voluntary HIV counselling and testing (VHCT) is one of the key strategies in the prevention of HIV in Ethiopia. However, utilization of the VHCT services among adolescents has been reported as low by previous studies. The purpose of this study was to investigate adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes towards VHCT services among adolescents attending high school in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. A cross-sectional school-based design using quantitative methods was employed to attain the objectives of the study. Data collection was done using self-administered structured questionnaires among 378 adolescent high school students. Data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings revealed that 75.7% of students are aware of the voluntary HIV counselling and testing services; 62.2% use the services and suggested that VHCT services should be located in schools and youth clubs for better access by adolescents. Thirty-two percent of respondents rated themselves at risk of HIV infection and 35.2% were not willing to disclose their HIV positive status to anybody. The findings of the study clearly indicate a need for a more accessible voluntary HIV counselling and testing services for adolescents. / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

The role of Isaiah Shembe's Nazarite church focusing on the healing and caring ministry to people living with HIV/AIDS and their families in greater Pietermaritzburg area in KwaZulu-Natal.

Madima, Thilivhali Nathaniel. January 2003 (has links)
The special focus ofthe thesis is the ministry of healing and caring during the present HN/AIDS pandemic in Kwazulu-Natal. Hence the purpose of this thesis is to investigate Isaiah Shembe's Nazareth Church's healing and caring ministry to people living with HIV/AIDS and the affected members of their families in greater Pietermaritzburg area in Kwazulu-Natal. Healing and caring for the sick is the primary mission of this church. It is therefore important to investigate this church's healing and caring ministry to HIV/AIDS patients. This is important especially because it is generally believed that this disease is incurable. Does this church really heal or just care for these patients? In general this Church utilizes the healing and caring methods of both Jesus and African healing systems. Hence this study is a theological reflection on the effectiveness of the healing method that combines Jesus and African healing systems with special reference to HIV/AIDS. The study is therefore inspired by the assumption that the congregants of Shembe's Nazareth Church play an important role in fighting this killer disease in greater Pietermaritzburg area. Further the study reflected on both the successes and failures of this Church's ministry .The healing and caring ministry of iBandla lamaNazaretha makes a substantial contribution to the war against HIV/AIDS by the church and society. This exercise will hopefully help us to learn more as we strive to be relevant and true to the gospel even now in the time ofHIV/AIDS. / Thesis (M.Th.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2003.

The faith based organization response to HIV/AIDS : a case study of the JL Zwane Memorial Church in Guguletu, Cape Town

Xapile, Nobis Bridget Zethu 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is very common to talk about or refer to people as “People Living with HIV/AIDS” but never “A Church with Aids”. Responding to HIV/AIDS has earned the JL Zwane Memorial Church this name or rather this label. Members of the congregation, many of them young, were dying and remaining silent, not doing anything, would have meant contributing to the disaster that had struck. Something drastic had to be done to respond to the pandemic or else the whole community would have perished. This was not easy as it meant risking losing those already in the church. To many people, HIV/AIDS was seen as a punishment from God to those who have sinned. For this reason many did not want to have anything to do with People Living with HIV/AIDS. The whole response is driven by the needs of the community i.e. those infected and those affected. This means listening to people tell their stories and then respond accordingly. Listening is the key in the response as the whole response revolves around people and their experiences.

The satisfaction of HIV/AIDS counsellors in the eThekwini metropolitan area with regard to their counsellor training

Hendricks, Mimona 29 February 2008 (has links)
Twenty four eThekwini HIV/AIDS counsellors based in four different work settings and who received training from five different training providers, shared their HIV/AIDS counsellor training experiences. The qualitative, phenomenological study utilized a multi-methods approach. The purpose of HIV/AIDS counselling lacks uniformity. Participants reflected upon their distinction between training satisfaction and perceived competency to render HIV/AIDS counselling after training. Although they were satisfied and empowered by the useful information gained, many felt inadequate to counsel an HIV positive person on completion of training. Inadequate practical learning opportunities were evident. Participants identified the need for a more balanced theoretical and practical training program incorporating experiential and didactic training methods. Entrance criteria to HIV/AIDS counsellor training courses and eventual assessment procedures in the study were diverse. Participants suggested improvements for training methods and course content and proposed a tiered training model that will result in standardized and certified training modules. / Social Work / MA(SS) (Social Work)

A critical evaluation of the protection of the rights of employees living with HIV/AIDS in the South African workplace

Molongoana, Henry Sifiso 01 1900 (has links)
People living with HIV/AIDS have the right to be employed as long as they are physically fit to do the work. The unfortunate situation now is that in many South African workplaces employees who disclose their HIV/AIDS status or who are suspected of living with the disease face backlashes from fellow employees and sometimes even from employers. No one should be discriminated against or be prevented from being employed or dismissed from employment purely on the basis of having HIV or AIDS. Any form of discrimination against employees living with HIV/AIDS constitutes a violation of their constitutional rights to among others human dignity, equality and fair labour practices. Discrimination may take the form of pre-employment HIV testing or a dismissal due to HIV positive status. This research looks at the protection given to employees living with HIV/AIDS in the South African workplaces and whether the protection is adequate or not. / Mercantile Law / LL. M.

Exploring the accessibilty of antiretroviral treatment amongst people living with HIV and AIDS at public health care facilities in Gert-Sibande Region in Mpumalanga

Mohale, Matome Oliver 08 1900 (has links)
The aim of the study was to explore the accessibility of antiretroviral treatment amongst people living with HIV and AIDS at Public Health Care Facilities in Gert-Sibande Region in Mpumalanga. The study was conducted at a selected Public Health Care facility in Gert Sibande Region at Msukaligwa Municipality in Mpumalanga. The study focused primarily on people attending wellness programmes that are living with HIV and AIDS, receiving antiretroviral treatment in Public Health Care facilities. Research design of the study was exploratory which fundamentally used to explore a new topic or to learn more about issues where little is known. The research approach was purely qualitative methodology which allowed the researcher to explore deeply the perceptions of people living with HIV and AIDS and the capabilities in the provision of antiretroviral treatment at public health care facilities in Msukaligwa municipality of Gert-Sibande Region in Mpumalanga. Qualitative interview is the method that has been used to gather data from 23 participants who took part in the study. Questions of the interview were semi-structured in-depth one-on-one interviews and were used to explore understanding in relation to the accessibility of antiretroviral treatment amongst people living with HIV and AIDS at Public Health Care Facilities in Gert- Sibande Region in Mpumalanga. The findings of the study revealed that, there is good accessibility of antiretroviral treatment at public health care facilities in Msukaligwa Municipality of Gert-Sibande Region in Mpumalanga. There is also an existence of negative staff attitude towards patients and a probable poor service delivery at the referral local clinics. It can be concluded that there is a need to re-look into the current Hospital’s reception filing system and the turnaround time at certain areas of the Hospital and the capacitation of staff at the wellness centre. There is also a need to intensify the established programmes and the encouragement of people on treatment to take their antiretroviral treatment consistently. / Health Studies / M.A. (Social behaviour Studies in HIV & AIDS)

Correlation between CD4 counts and adherence to antiretrovirals in treatment patience at Katutura intermediate hospital, Windhoek, Namibia

Tjipura, Dinah Jorokee 04 1900 (has links)
The study analysed and compared data from patients' medical and pharmacy refill records to identify correlations between CD4 cell counts and adherence to antiretroviral drugs at Katutura Intermediate Hospital (KIH) in Windhoek, Namibia. The study investigated whether the pharmacy refill adherence measurement methodology could predict immunological recovery through increased CD4 cell counts. There was a positive but weak relationship between adherence and CD4 cell counts. Although the pharmacy refill records could predict immunological response it was not sensitive enough and should be used in combination with other adherence measurement tools. / Public Health / M.A. (Public Health)

HIV/AIDS and the labour sector : examining the role of law in protecting the HIV positive worker in Kenya

Ojienda, Tom Odhiambo 05 1900 (has links)
Kenyan labour laws inadequately protect HIV positive worker. The Constitution of Kenya, 1963, does not prohibit stereotypical attitudes adverse to HIV positive workers and discrimination on the basis of health status. It does not provide for the right to employment, health and health care services, and fails to delimit privacy and dignity rights. Under the Industrial Property Act, 2001, the basis for Government exploitation of patent through compulsory licensing is whimsical and parallel importing is not envisaged. Employers unilaterally draft employment contracts notwithstanding their unequal power relations to employees. The HIV and AIDS Tribunal institutionalises discrimination against HIV positive workers on the basis of the ambiguous ‘inherent job requirements.’ Plausible international labour laws and practices have no place in Kenya unless they are domesticated. SUMMARY This thesis interrogates the Kenyan labour laws and policies to identify their inefficiencies and suggest recommendations for reform. It commences with an analysis of the topical issues associated with the HIV positive worker. It then examines the extent of prevalence and ramifications of HIV/AIDS in Kenya. Subsequently, it studies the efforts made at the international and domestic arena in protecting the HIV positive worker. A comparative analysis is made of the laws protecting the HIV positive worker in a number of countries, namely, South Africa, United States of America and Australia. The thesis draws conclusions and recommends measures on how best to protect the Kenyan HIV positive worker. The labour laws should be amended to prohibit discrimination on the basis of health status, provide for right to affordable medication and work, allow negotiation of employment contracts, list international laws that Kenya ratifies without reservation as a source of law and delimit the concept of ‘inherent requirements of a job.’ The public should be sensitised to embrace HIV positive workers. Once the new Constitution is enacted, it should list socio-economic rights as fundamental rights and reform the office of the ombudsman to deal with complaints against private employers. / (LL.D.)

Perceptions of the role of church-based programmes in addressing HIV and AIDS : a study in the Durban inner-city area

Cele, Mfiseleni Sylvester 10 1900 (has links)
A structured questionnaire was used to survey the perceptions of programme coordinators, fieldworkers and beneficiaries of the role of church-based programmes in addressing HIV and AIDS in the inner-city of Durban. One hundred and ninety two respondents were recruited from seventeen churches. Findings indicate that fear of HIV- and AIDS-related stigma and discrimination abound. The material and spiritual roles of church-based programmes in addressing the needs of people infected with HIV and affected by HIV and AIDS were stressed by the respondents. Whereas programme coordinators were well informed about HIV and AIDS, information that can dispel fears about stigma and correct myths about HIV-transmission should be tailored to reach ordinary men and women. It is recommended that further research be conducted on the preventive aspects of church-based programmes in the Durban inner-city. / Sociology / M.A. (Social Behaviour Studies in HIV/AIDS)
