Selling "Operation Passage to Freedom": Dr. Thomas Dooley and the Religious Overtones of Early American Involvement in Vietnam

Johnson, David Patrick 15 May 2009 (has links)
Vietnam was partitioned at the 17th parallel on 21 July 1954 with the signing of the Geneva Accords. During the following three hundred days, between 600,000 and one million Vietnamese civilians traveled from North Vietnam to South Vietnam. Three hundred thousand of these individuals were transported in the United States Navy's evacuation efforts, dubbed Operation Passage to Freedom. The Navy recognized the propaganda value of the evacuation from areas under communist control, but American audiences did not respond to the coverage afforded to the American operation. In 1956, a year after the completion of the evacuation, Dr. Thomas Dooley released Deliver Us from Evil, a first-hand account of his own experiences in Vietnam during the evacuation. This book enjoyed literary success and became a bestseller. This study explores the reasons Dooley enjoyed propagandistic success while other pieces of propaganda failed to sustain American interest.

The effect of road roughness on vehicle operating costs for medium-sized trucks: a calibration of existing models

Finlayson, Adrian Mclean January 1991 (has links)
A project report submitted to the faculty of engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Engineering Johannesburg 1991 / In the economic and social development of any country, an effective road transportation system is an important factor However, it also consumes a large proportion of the total infrastructure costs, while the costs borne by the road user for vehicle operation and depreciation arc even greater. A policy must therefore be adopted in which total community costs for any road link Of network are minimized. To do this meaningfully, alternatives must be developed and compared and the trade-offs between them carefully assessed. This, in turn, requires the ability to quantify the different cost functions for the desired period of analysis. [No abstract provided. Information taken from introduction] / MT2018

Otimização de operação de rede por um modelo híbrido (hidrodinâmico-genético). / Optimization of hydraulic networks through a hybrid model (hydrodynamic - genetic).

Diniz, Victor Emanuel Mello de Guimarães 23 April 2004 (has links)
This report presents a hybrid model that calculates the heads and flows of a hydraulic network system and then uses a genetic algorithm to optimize the operational control of the hydraulic network. To calculate the steady flow and the extensive period it was used the Matrix Method. The GA used binary numbers. The objective function minimizes the sum of the dissipated hydraulic power in the whole network of all calculated periods during the day. The hybrid model part that refers to the hydraulic calculation is working well, because the values calculated by the model applied to the networks used as examples are similar to the ones obtained from the technical literature. The hybrid model part that refers to the GA is working well, because the objective function values calculated by the model converged whenever the elitism was used. The proposed optimization of this work is to be used in hydraulic networks that present operational problems that need to be solved either installing valves or having installed valves.

Uma visão integrada do planejamento da expansão e da operação energética do sistema elétrico brasileiro. / An integrated vision of the expansion planning and the energy operation of the brazilian power system.

Azevedo Filho, Jorge Marques de 10 March 2006 (has links)
The initial inspiration of this Thesis relates to the preoccupation about the Brazilian power system supply with regards to the operation?s energy planning horizon, which means considering five years ahead. The question was: what can be done to reinforce the power system supply during this period? In order to fundament the proposed actions defined in this Thesis, the work starts showing the Brazilian energy operation?s evolution, its logical chain and software conception and, in continuation, presents a revision and complementation of the methodology and software used for the Brazilian generation system expansion planning. Based on this background, an analysis and diagnostics of the several aspects involved in the interaction between the generation system expansion planning and the energy operation planning, as well as the interaction between the energy operation planning and the power system distribution studies and proceedings were developed. And, finally, for each one of the aspects mentioned, effective actions were proposed to reinforce the power system supply, proposals always based on real experiences and, when plausible, on specific \"Cases Studies\".

Use of Building Information Modeling technology in the integration of the handover process and facilities management

Alvarez-Romero, Sergio Omar 09 September 2014 (has links)
"The operation and maintenance of a constructed facility takes place after the construction is finished. It is usually the longest phase in the lifecycle of the facility and the one that substantially contributes to its lifecycle cost. To efficiently manage the operation and maintenance of a facility, the staff in charge needs reliable and timely information to support decision making throughout the facility’s lifecycle. The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) is gradually but steadily changing the way constructed facilities are designed and built. As a result of its use a significant amount of coordinated information is generated during this process and stored in the digital model. However, once the project is completed the owner does not necessarily receive full benefits from the model for future operation and maintenance of the facility. This research explores the information that in the context of educational facilities has value to the owner/operator and that can be delivered at the end of the construction stage through a BIM-enabled digital handover process. It discusses the importance of the Information Delivery Manual and Model and proposes an open standard approach for the creation of a Model View Definition that combines Industry Foundation Classes (IFCs) with COBie standards or with Owner defined standards. The research conducted an extensive literature review and an in-depth case study of an academic institution examining in the detail its current practices and needs for the handover of information, operation and maintenance and space management requirements as well as of the future needs of the facilities management department information system generated by the use of BIM technology. The proposed approach is validated in two parts. The first part is conducted through an online survey distributed to academic institutions across the nation and through selected interviews with facilities management staff in the local area. The second part creates a proof of concept by applying the proposed approach to an existing BIM model and then creates the model version for the handover. "

Data integration in the rail domain

Morris, Christopher Robert January 2018 (has links)
The exchange of information is crucial to the operation of railways; starting with the distribution of timetables, information must constantly be exchanged in any railway network. The slow evolution of the information environment within the rail industry has resulted in the existence of a diverse range of systems, only able to exchange information essential to railway operations. Were the cost of data integration reduced, then further cost reductions and improvements to customer service would follow as barriers to the adoption of other technologies are removed. The need for data integration has already been studied extensively and has been included in the UK industry's rail technical strategy however, despite it's identification as a key technique for improving integration, uptake of ontology remains limited. This thesis considers techniques to reduce barriers to the take up of ontology in the UK rail industry, and presents a case study in which these techniques are applied. Amongst the key barriers to uptake identified are a lack of software engineers with ontology experience, and the diverse information environment within the rail domain. Techniques to overcomes these barriers using software based tools are considered, and example tools produced which aid the overcoming of these barriers. The case study presented is of a degraded mode signalling system, drawing data from a range of diverse sources, integrated using an ontology. Tools created to improve data integration are employed in this commercial project, successfully combing signalling data with (simulated) train positioning data.
