Lorelei's Guide to a Lady's Luxury: The Secrets of Social Mobility in Anita Loos' Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Saeed, Amanda 06 September 2018 (has links)
Anita Loos’ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes constantly acknowledges tensions between the intentions and actions of its protagonist, Lorelei Lee. Some literary critics and authors have speculated in depth the reasons and/or effects of Lorelei’s humorous oblivion, coming to the conclusion that Loos creates this character as a parody for the reader. This article asserts instead that readers should grant Lorelei autonomy, thus giving her more credit than she is generally given at face value. I read Blondes as a self-help book rather than a parody. Specifically, I read Lorelei as not only a creation of modernist work, but a creator of such work: her diary works as a satire on the nineteenth century social etiquette texts directed at women. By identifying some implicit lessons in Lorelei’s diary, I will demonstrate how Loos carefully constructs Lorelei’s humorous rhetoric as a disguised societal guide for the contemporary American flapper who aspires upward mobility.

Constata-se, desta forma, como a literatura cumpre o papel de leitora privilegiada da históri / According to the theory of the Contemporary Historical Novel in Latin America and on the Feminist Literary Criticism, this study aims to investigate the construction of the female character Anita Garibaldi in Latin American novels, from the historical model built by Giuseppe Garibaldi in his Memórias (1860). By idealizing his female companion, in this narrative, the Italian hero builds the image of a warrior woman who moves herself in the public space. Even according to Garibaldi‟s text, later historians complemented the biography of the Brazilian heroine by highlighting her experience in the private space where she accomplished the role that the society granted the women of the nineteenth century. So, the model that History presents is one of an ambiguous woman who passes between the public space, open and the private space, close. The work presented here shows how each novelist recreates Anita‟s image, moving away from the historical prototype created by Garibaldi or approaching it. With this purpose, we chose as literary corpus the novels A guerrilheira (1979) by the Brazilian writer João Felício dos Santos; Anita (1999), by another Brazilian writer, Flávio Aguiar; Anita Garibaldi (2003) by the Argentine writer Julio A. Sierra; and Anita cubierta de arena (2003) by the also Argentine writer Alicia Dujovne Ortiz. In all of them, one verifies the intention of redeeming a character of the History acclaimed as heroine whose image was discursively elaborated by a man who granted her male characteristics. One notes, for that reason, how literature fulfills its role of privileged reader of History

Manica, Tatiana Czornabay January 2012 (has links)
Write about the presence of women in history and facts that have marked the humanity is not a simple task, because the complexity begins in the Act of generating new life and that certainly will follow and will have strong influence in the construction of the identity of this generation. The construction of myths, heroes and heroines have always been present in the human imagination, and when they are found its characteristics in a woman as Anita Garibaldi, is of great interest to your study. So we opted for this theme in this Dissertation. In the novels, in the miniseries and movies that tell the life of this character, there are divergent factors and similarities to be analyzed. The behavior, space, time, are parts of the narrative structure that trigger doubts about the real and the fictional. The Bakhtin's dialogism contributes to clarify some attitudes of narrators to with the plot that reproduce, because the life of Anita Garibaldi, along with her husband Giuseppe Garibaldi is full of loopholes. The overall goal of this dissertation is to: analyze the representation of persona/character Anita Garibaldi in narratives of Wolfgang Ludwig Rau, Walter Zumblick, a. Garibaldi and Paulo Markun has. They are compared and analysed on two moments from two approaches: the macro analysis and microanálise of the work, noting its entirety, as are narrated the plot, time, space and the description of the character. The methodology consists of a case study with descriptive qualitative analysis, accomplished using content analysis technique. The facts are divided into four categories for the achievement of microanálise. Final considerations that, faced with the meanings set found in the character Anita Garibaldi, his personality presents facets unknown and doubt they deserve authentic representation and research. / Submitted by Rogele Pinheiro (rogele.pinheiro@unisul.br) on 2018-01-17T17:07:49Z No. of bitstreams: 1 104842_Tatiana.pdf: 4757420 bytes, checksum: 37dd71ca2301199882b3a9b46da5efb8 (MD5) / Approved for entry into archive by Gheovana Figueiredo (gheovana.figueiredo@unisul.br) on 2018-01-17T17:22:13Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 104842_Tatiana.pdf: 4757420 bytes, checksum: 37dd71ca2301199882b3a9b46da5efb8 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2018-01-17T17:22:13Z (GMT).

The Creation of New Meaning in Contemporary Intercultural Performance

Tahririha, Mahalia Golnosh January 2018 (has links)
The global movement of peoples and the changing demographics of an ever-more globalized world are undoubtedly becoming increasingly reflected in theatrical practice. Contemporary intercultural performance has become a way for first/second-generation, migrant, immigrant, and exilic artists to re-inscribe and reclaim their agency and cultural identities. This thesis argues for a new method of analysis of intercultural theatre that moves away from the historically "alimentary" relationship between performance cultures - in which one (often the West) borrows and takes from the other (often "the Rest") for its own benefit - towards a methodology of performance analysis that encourages agency of creation with the performer through a more bi-directional or fluid process of intercultural exchange (Lo and Gilbert 43). In looking at three contemporary performances, Fish Eyes by Anita Majumdar, Obaaberima by Tawiah M'Carthy, and DESH by Akram Khan, I argue for a four-point model of performance analysis: encounter, intention, negotiation and emergence. I argue that these four elements are all present within the process of construction and reception of an intercultural performance, and that in deploying them, the artist is able to usher in the creation of new meaning - both semantically and aesthetically - through the means of intercultural exchange.

Walking toward the Call of Beauty: Beauty and Affect in Badami

Apong, Andrew January 2015 (has links)
This thesis provides a reading of Anita Rau Badami’s novels The Hero’s Walk and Can You Hear the Nightbird Call? The interpretive frame constructs a theory of affect to explore the human experience of beauty through a reading of Badami’s texts. This work’s approach to beauty is derived largely from Elaine Scarry’s On Beauty and Being Just and from musings on beauty by Simone Weil. Following Weil, I understand beauty as the ascription of value or worth to various things, actions, or ideas, and I position beauty as an undergirding affective experience that is always present in the human encounter of the world. This thesis examines how Badami’s novels depict the ways in which a Weilian sense of beauty leads characters to develop affectual attachments to various ideologies and discourses represented in the diasporic landscape of the texts. Through a critical consideration of the depicted effects of such attachments on Badami’s characters’ lives, this study also locates potential instances of what Lauren Berlant calls cruel optimism. I contend that the novels often portray instances of cruel optimism to critique traditional practices and perspectives while ever working towards building their own pronouncement of what constitutes a more genuine, higher sense of the beautiful. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Torres Saco, José Martín 15 February 2013 (has links)
Tesis
