Sepetiba bay, located about 60 km west of the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro city, has undergone notable development in the last decades, with the establishment of about 400 industrial plants in its basin, basically metallurgical, which release its industrial waste either straight into the bay or through local rivers. The Sepetiba harbor also brought up a lot of industrial investment in that area. This urban and industrial expansion caused several environmental impacts, mainly due to the presence of heavy metals and other potentially toxic substances present in the effluents discharged into the bay. This work aimed to assess heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb e Zn) contamination and mobility in sediments from Sepetiba bay. The acid-volatile sulfides (AVS) and the concentration of simultaneously extracted metals (S[SEM) were determined in 65 sediment samples from Sepetiba bay, representing the whole area. The results obtained showed that Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn presented higher concentrations in the northeastern area (mainly in the mouth of Guandu and Canal de São Francisco rivers), while the highest concentration of Ni were observed in the western region of the bay. The comparison between SEM concentrations with the Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines (TEL and PEL) indicated that Cd and Zn presented values which may hazard to aquatic organisms (concentration levels above PEL); the elements Cu, Pb and Ni presented concentration levels below PEL, suggesting low probability of toxicological effects to the aquatic organisms. On the other hand, the ratio S[SEM]/[AVS] was below 1 in the northeastern region, indicating that, in spite of the high concentration of the analyzed metals in this area, they are trapped in the sediment, as sulfides. The total metal concentrations in the sediments were also determined and the same distribution pattern obtained for the SEM were observed, with high concentrations in the northeastern region of the bay, classifying the area as level 2, for Zn, and as level 1, for Cd, Cu, Pb and Ni, according to the CONAMA 344/04 act. A geostatiscal approach is presented, the attenuation of concentrations model, which aims to estimate metal mobility in sediments. The proposed model showed the highest attenuation values for Zn, Cd, Cu and Pb in the northeastern region, indicating that the mobility of these metals is low in this region, suggesting low availability, which is in good agreement with the results obtained by the S[SEM]/[AVS] model. These results indicate good possibilities of applying this model in metal contamination studies in estuarine ecosystems.

Metodologia de caracterização da propagação acústica em tubulações de transporte de fluidos bifásicos gás-líquido / Methodology of characterization of acoustic propagation in pipelines for transporting two-phase gas-liquid fluidsJaqueline Costa Martins 04 February 2011 (has links)
This work aims to contribute to the development of the study of wave propagation in fluid transport pipelines, through the analysis of acoustic attenuation and propagation speed. For this reason, experimental tests were made in single and two-phase flow, varying the flow rate in a test line of 1500 meters and 50 mm in diameter, for the acquisition of signals generated from the closing of leak simulation valves at known points along the pipeline. To analyze the acoustic attenuation it was proposed a methodology based on measurement of temporal damping coefficient of pressure waves as input for calculating the attenuation coefficient, by using a single pressure sensor. This methodology was validated by direct measurement of attenuation coefficient and the results show an excellent agreement in single-phase flow. For the tests in two-phase flow it was not possible to apply this methodology due to the strong damping of pressure waves, which only made direct measurements of attenuation results phenomenologically consistent. Acoustic propagation velocity for single phase flow was influenced by the presence of dissolved gas and cavitation bubbles, having values close to the literature for low flow rates. For high flows rates, the velocities were consistent with a two-phase flow at finely dispersed bubbles. For the two-phase flow the regime varied from slug to bubbles. The propagation velocities obtained are consistent with those obtained by theoretical models.

Previous issue date: 2008-02-13 / This dissertation aims to describe the basic characteristics of microstructured fibers, their concept and performance, and to investigate the application of a low loss microstructured fiber to the development of Raman amplifiers. An analysis of the use of these amplifiers in Telecommunication applications is described. To this end, simulations were carried out with these waveguides with the data of a real fiber described in the literature. Simulations were also carried out to determine the amplifier s net gain and noise figure and to establish the advantages of its use in a complete optical fiber span, including the compensation dispersion in the O band (1260-1360 nm). As a result, it was demonstrated that the microstructured fiber presents, in some aspects, a performance that is higher than that of conventional Raman amplifiers, and complementary to that of a commercial amplifiers, such as those based on Erbium doped fiber. Cristallisation et convection sous hyper-gravité / Crystallization and convection under hyper-gravityHuguet, Ludovic 15 October 2014 (has links)
The inner core boundary (ICB) is unstable, and a mushy layer forms under very particular conditions in which the crystallization is very slow compared to the very vigorous convection of the liquid core. To mimic these conditions, we have investigated a mushy layer under hyper-gravity in a centrifuge. The thickness of a mushy layer decreases with gravity and the solid fraction increases. This is coherent with seismological studies suggesting that the solid fraction at the ICB is close to unity. Moreover, seismology shows that the inner core is very heterogeneous in terms of elastic anisotropy, attenuation or wave velocity and that there exists a strong East-West dichotomy on the ICB. One hypothesis is that the latter is due to a translation of the inner core that would cause crystallization on one hemisphere and melting on the other one. We have tested that hypothesis with experiments of solidification and melting of a mush. We have used ultrasounds as an analogue to the seismic waves to quantify structural changes in the mush from measurements of attenuation and scattering. From our observations, it is plausible that the ICB on the Western hemisphere s melting while it is solidifying on the Eastern hemisphere. In other experiments, using xenon gas under hyper-gravity, we have observed an adiabatic gradient for the first time. This thesis shows the feasibility of these experiments and the possibility to check experimentally the approximations used for compressible convection.

Energy dissipation in oxide glasses / Dissipation d'énergie dans les verres d'oxydesDamart, Tanguy 28 September 2017 (has links)
The origin of sound attenuation at low and high frequency in glasses stays elusive mainly because of the complex temperature and frequency dependence of the phenomena at its root. Indeed, the presence of complex structures and multi-scale organizations in glasses induce the existence of relaxation time ranging from the second to the femto-second and of spatial correlation ranging from the Angström to a hundred nanometers. At low-frequency, a better understanding of the phenomena at the origin of dissipation would be beneficial to several applications. For example, the multi-layers coating the mirrors of gravitational waves detectors consists of a superposition of two oxide glasses: silicate (SiO2) and tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5), are an important source of dissipation. At high frequency, the study of dissipation raises theoretical questions about the link between attenuation and dissipation as well as between loclt asymmetry and dissipation. In the present study, we conducted an analysis of the interaction between mechanical waves and the structure of two oxide glasses using simulation techniques such as non-equilibrium molecular dynamics. At high-frequencies, we implemented and used mechanical spectroscopy to measure dissipation numerically and performed in parallel an analytical development based on the projection of the atomic motion on the vibrational eigenmodes. At low-frequencies, we used molecular dynamics to gather sets of thermally activated events that we classed in three categories based on topologically distinct atomic motions and from which we predicted dissipation numerically using a refreshed TLS model

Caractéristiques et origines de la variabilité diurne des propriétés optiques / Characteristics and origins of the diel variability of optical propertiesOuhssain, Malika 25 April 2014 (has links)
My thesis is developed for the particular case of satellites observations from geostationary orbit. The overall aim was to characterize the diel variability of water inherent (i.e. the particulate beam attenuation and backscattering coefficients, cp and bbp) and apparent (i.e. reflectance, R) optical properties (“shape”of diel cycle, amplitude, seasonal variations, origins). These properties determine the signal which is observed from sensor aboard satellite. This study is a preliminary step in understanding the physical problem, before assessing the possibility of quantifying the diel variability from satellite observations. Diel variability of cp and bbp is studied by season, as defined by physical and trophic conditions: mixing, bloom proliferation, its decline, and oligotrophy. Both cp and bbp are characterized by a diel cycle of daytime increase and nighttime decrease, confirming known general trends. This occurs across all seasons, but intra-seasonal variability differed between cp and bbp cycles: unlike bbp, cp show larger amplitude of diurnal variation during the bloom cp and bbp minima are synchronized while bbp minima are attained 3-6 h before those of cp, except during the bloom. Daily changes of R are consistent with the variations of bbp. Nevertheless, it is still difficult to reproduce the diurnal increase of bbp by inversion of R. The differences observed between in situ and modeled values of bbp suggest that the performance of inversion is degraded when it is used at high frequency.

The fate of microbial contaminants in the subsurface with a South African case studyRajkumar, Yasmin January 2009 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc / The time bound agenda of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's) aims at reducing poverty, extending gender equality and advancing opportunities for health and education by addressing current and future water resource and sanitation needs. In many rural areas of South Africa, the cost implication of routing surface water supplies and providing water borne sewerage may far exceed the budgets of local water service authorities. This has resulted in a major thrust in service provision via localised sources, mainly boreholes and springs as well as on site sanitation options. Whilst the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998) mandates the South African government to provide potable water to all citizens in an equitable manner, this needs to be balanced against the preservation of the country’s water resources both quantitatively and qualitatively to ensure sustainability. It is imperative that this fine balance between protection and effecting societal demands and economic development through large-scale water provision be maintained, as successful strategising will be resultant of integrated social, economic and environmental issues especially in economically developing countries. In order to fulfil the mandate of the NWA, policies and strategies for effective protection and use of groundwater resources have been drawn up and are in the process of being drawn up by the national Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF). The major scope of research in this thesis stems from feasibility studies commissioned by the DWAF for the implementation of a groundwater protection zoning policy for the management and protection of groundwater resource quality. The research work focuses on specifically the microbiological zone of protection and attempts to determine the fate of various pathogens that emanate from on site sanitation facilities as they move through the subsurface. The research was predominantly proposed as a desktop collation and analysis of existing published data however; it was later decided to include a local case study site. / South Africa

Gamma spectroscopy and lifetime measurements in the doubly-odd 194tl nucleus, revealing possible chiral symmetry breakingMasiteng, Paulus Lukisi January 2013 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / In the first experiment high spin states in 194Tl, excited through the 181Ta (18O, 5n) heavyion fusion evaporation reaction were studied using the AFRODITE array at iThemba LABS. The γ-γ coincidences, RAD ratios and linear polarization measurements were carried out and the previously known level scheme of 194Tl was significantly extended. A total of five rotational bands four of which are new were observed. A pair of rotational bands associated with the πh9/2 ⊗ νi−1
13/2 configuration at lower spins and with the πh9/2 ⊗ νi−3 13/2
configuration at higher spins was found and interpreted as the first possible chiral bands followed above the band crossing. The two 4-quasiparticle bands show exceptionally close near-degeneracy in the excitation energies. Furthermore close similarity is also found in their alignments and B(M1)/B(E2) reduced transition probability ratios. In the second experiment lifetimes in 194Tl were measured using the DSAM technique with the excited states in this nucleus populated through the 181Ta (18O, 5n) reaction. A total of 25 lifetimes and 30 reduced transition probabilities of magnetic dipole B(M1) and electric quadrupole B(E2) have been evaluated. Furthermore B(M1) and B(E2) reduced transition probabilities in Bands 1 and 4, which have been regarded as chiral candidates, were found to be close to each other and reveals strong splitting along spin values. This further supports the proposed chiral nature of these two bands.

Contrôle actif acoustique du bruit large bande dans un habitacle automobile / Active control of broadband noise in a car cabinLoiseau, Paul 28 October 2016 (has links)
Classical methods used for noise reduction in cars are based on adjusting the mechanical properties: mass, stiffness and damping. They are qualified as passive and induce significative addition of weight for reducing low frequency noises. Active noise control is seen as a possible solution to achieve low frequency noise attenuation and weight reduction. The goal of this work is to evaluate achievable performances with such solution.Acoustic enclosures are known to be resonant systems of highorder. Obtaining a model of it, therefore requires a suitable identification method. The approach chosen is based on subspace methods. It processes data in the frequency domain for obtaining a continuous time model. The control problem derived from the specifications is a MIMO H1, multi-objective and multi-model problem with a strong stability constraint. Futhermore, actuators and sensors are not-colocated, and no measure of the disturbance is available. In order to precisely evaluate the achievable performances, this problem is solved using non smooth optimization.Such approach ensures the absence of pessimism, but requires an appropriate initialization and a parsimonious controller structure, because it does not ensure convergence toward the global optimum. The proposed methodology was validated in simulation and experimentally. It allows a precise evaluation and comparison of achievable performances according to the constraints on available measures and means of action.
