Thesis (M.A.) --University of Limpopo, 2013 / As the topic states, the research is about the abuse of men in the society (Northern Sotho society in particular). Men, like women and children, are also abused, but unlike in the case of women and children, this abuse is not taken seriously. In most of the cases, this abuse is not reported. It is the aim of this study to scrutinize man abuse as depicted in the following Northern Sotho novels: Nonyana ya tokologo (Kekana, 1985), Ke nako ya ka (Molefe, 2001) and Ngwana Magana go botšwa (Motloutsi, 2004).

Victimization experiences of Chinese gay men and lesbians in Hong Kong: a longitudinal study and an evaluation of a psychoeducational program on sexual identity management strategies. / Victimization of Chinese gay men and lesbians / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2005 (has links)
The present thesis explored the experiences and correlates of victimization among Chinese gay men and lesbians in Hong Kong with the aim at reducing their victimization experiences in future. This thesis had two studies. Study One was a cross-sectional study to examine correlates of victimization experiences. Based on the stress and coping paradigm, an integrated model on victimization experiences was developed. The model composed of three predicting factors of victimization experiences: predispositional stressors including gender role atypicality and internalized homophobia, cognitive appraisal variables including perceived discrimination and gay/lesbian community involvement, and sexual identity management strategies including counterfeiting, integration, and confrontation. A total of 645 Chinese gay men and lesbians in Hong Kong participated in this study. Results of path analyses showed that sexual identity management strategy of confrontation was the immediate correlate of victimization. Cognitive appraisal variables, including perceived discrimination and gay/lesbian community involvement, were also directly related to victimization experiences. Predisposition stressors, including gender role atypicality and internalized homophobia, were related to cognitive appraisal variables and sexual identity management strategies, which in turn predicted victimization experiences. The cross-sectional model was examined with four types of victimization experiences, including verbal insults, physical attacks, sexual assaults, and unfair treatment; and with gay men and lesbians separately. Results showed that the model was more predictive of physical attacks and sexual assaults of gay men. Based on the final cross-sectional model, a longitudinal model on victimization experiences and a psychoeducational program on sexual identity management strategies were developed. Study Two was a three-month follow-up study to examine the longitudinal model and to evaluate the effectiveness of the psychoeducational program on reducing future victimization experiences. A random sample of 392 participants from Study One was recruited to Study Two. Results of path analyses showed that victimization experiences at T2 (Time Two) were predicted by three longitudinal paths. Confrontation at T1 (Time One) had direct impact on confrontation at T2, which was linked to victimization experiences at T2. Victimization experiences at T1 predicted confrontation at T2, which was related to victimization experiences at T2. Victimization experiences at T1 had direct effects on victimization experiences at T2. Similar to the cross-sectional model, the longitudinal model was more predictive of physical attacks and sexual assaults of gay men. Results also showed that the psychoeducational program was effective in reducing participants' victimization experiences in future. Compared with the control group, participants of the psychoeducational program used less confrontation strategy, more counterfeiting and integration strategies from T1 to T2. Participants showed greater reduction in victimization experiences than the control group from T1 to T2. Compared with lesbians, gay men demonstrated greater reduction in victimization experiences after the psychoeducational program. Limitations and service implications of the studies were discussed. / Wong Chi Yan. / "August 2005." / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-01, Section: B, page: 0566. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2005. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 262-291). / Electronic reproduction. ''Jag lever i ett förhållande där min kvinna slår mig'' : en kvalitativ studie om kvinnors våld mot män i nära relationer / ’’I live in a relationship where my wife beats me’’ : a qualitative study of women’s violence against men in intimate relationships

Veselinovic, Jelena January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of women's violence against men in intimate relationships, get an idea of what forms of expression that this type of violence has and to highlight the men's experiences of violence. There is little scientific research in the field in Sweden. Crime Prevention Council has determined that eight percent of all complaints involving domestic violence in 2010, reported by men over 18 years. You can only speculate on how large number of unreported cases is among abused men. The international studies highlight that the abused men feel ashamed of having been subjected to violence by a female partner. I have been based this essay on two theoretical premises, Per Isdal theory of "violence perspective" and Elaine Bergqvist's definition of the suppression technique. The study was conducted through a qualitative content analysis. This type of method used to interpret the various texts, and to this study, three autobiographies was analyzed.    The results from the survey highlights that all men have been subjected to extensive financial, material, latent and psychological violence. Two men have been subjected to regular physical violence and one of the men has been the victim of sexual violence. The discussion highlighted that violence against men in intimate relationships is undetectable and taboo and that the phenomenon must be recognized and made more visible. The conclusion of this study was that the abused men feel ashamed to seek help but that is also exists lack of adequate help and support to give to men which has been abused.

Det osedda våldsoffret - Hur män som utsatts för våld i nära relation upplever mötet med hälso- och sjukvården : En litteraturstudie / The unseen victim of violence - How men who have been exposed to intimate partner violence experience the encounter with healthcare : A literature study

Herne, Elin, Johlin, Wilma January 2022 (has links)
Background: Men who have been exposed to intimate partner violence have varying experiences of the different dimensions and forms of violence. The consequences of intimate partner violence affect the health of the victimized men. Aim: To shed light on how men who have been subjected to intimate partner violence experience the encounter with healthcare. Method: A structured general literature study was conducted where the data collection led to ten scientific articles that were processed in three steps. Results: Three main categories emerged: negative experiences of the encounter with healthcare, positive experiences of the encounter with healthcare and potential of improvement in the encounter with abused men. The results showed that the men who sought healthcare after intimate partner violence had predominantly negative experiences that were characterized by for example shame and guilt, which were largely based on stigma and society's view of masculinity. Although some men experienced healthcare as positive with significant support. Conclusion: In this study, the significance of an empathic and openminded treatment by healthcare professionals of men who disclose their experiences emerged. Hence, increased awareness is required to show that men can be victims of intimate partner violence and how they can be treated in the best way.

Jonasson, Martin January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze IntimatePartner Violence (IPV). How does contemporary science illustrate men as victimsand women as perpetrators in these relationships? Ten articles were presentedand analyzed in a systematic literature study. Furthermore, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) exhibitssymmetry in socio-demographic characteristics, such as gender and ethnicity. Thefindings also points out that Common Couple Violence (CCV) are a much morecommon form of violence than Intimate Terrorism (IT) and that both forms areused by men and women.
