writing/trauma

In writing/trauma, I address the association of trauma with knowledge, language, and writing. My discussion first works to establish the relationship between trauma and knowledge. I argue that trauma does not fit into the traditional Enlightenment model of scientific knowledge or the ontological model of what Michele Foucault calls the ‘truth-event.’ Rather, I contend that trauma is unique embodied knowledge, different from that of praxis and normal memory. In general, embodied knowledge is a matter of prenoetic and intentional operations. The body schema and body image maintain a power of plasticity and adjust to new motilities in order to re-establish an equilibrium when disrupted or threatened. In line with this, embodiment involves a sense of temporality, agency, and subjectivity. But in the case of extreme disruption, such as trauma, these fundamental aspects of embodiment are compromised to the point that there is a corruption of the “embodied feeling of being alive.” Physical pain, to some extent, produces this phenomenon. However, the distinctive function of the repetition compulsion within trauma distinguishes it as an exceptional embodied experience unlike physical pain or analogous phenomena. In the case of trauma, an equilibrium is not maintained, similar to the ontology of the accident. Instead, at best, we can say that what takes place is a destructive plasticity, in which the individual is transformed to the point of being a whole new ontological subject. This phenomenon of destructive plasticity is significant in establishing the relationship of language to trauma-knowledge as trauma is the precise point at which language is ruptured. That is to say, purported within psychanalytic discourse, traumatic experience is observed in a break within the symbolic order. As opposed to physical pain, then, trauma is more akin to the abject, sharing the same resistance to narrative language. Traumatic experience is expressed through semiotic compulsions in the body as a revolt of being. In light of this, I argue that trauma, rather than being treated as a pathology, is a specific embodied knowledge which can be captured in semiotic, poetic language. Moreover, fragmentary writing, the interface of fragmented knowledge and language, captures the disruptive force of traumatic experience. In conclusion, I assert that writing-trauma is valuable, not because it allows for a ‘working through’ of the traumatic experience, but because it is an expression of a distinctly human experience. My work canvases nineteenth century to contemporary literature on trauma such as Bessel van der Kolk in the neurobiological discipline, literary critics including Cathy Caruth, Dori Laub, Dominick LaCapra, et al, and the psychoanalytic theorists Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan. I draw from such literature to analyze the ambiguous impossible-possibility of witnessing and giving testimony of traumatic experience in history and writing, as well as the concern with trauma and language specific to the repetition compulsion and the unconscious. Yet, my primary focus is on the contribution of philosophy to the ongoing discourse of trauma. I look to philosophical thinkers such as Michele Foucault and Friedrich Nietzsche to depict the types of epistemological models traditionally addressed within the history of philosophy. My analysis of phenomenology and embodiment is mainly informed by the works of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Shaun Gallagher. Additionally, Catharine Malabou’s work on destructive plasticity provides an understanding of the ontology of the accident, one of the most critical pieces to my work. Additionally, the works of Elaine Scarry and Julia Kristeva help to disclose the intimate relationship between language and trauma. I also incorporate the work of Gloria Anzalúa along with Julia Kristeva to describe the multi-dimensionality of poetic language and how this is what allows for an articulation of embodied trauma-knowledge. Finally, Maurice Blanchot’s depiction of the disaster and fragmentary writing best captures writing-trauma as it is, like trauma, a process of fragmenting language and meaning. My purpose is to make clear the value of poetic language and fragmentary writing in regard to knowing and writing trauma. The significance to philosophy is that my discussion bridges the phenomenological and epistemological perspectives with that of the literary in order to engage in philosophical discussion on the implications and value of traumatic experience for understanding the human condition. It is my observation that the more we experience trauma, the more valuable artistic expression becomes, and the more we are pressed within the philosophical tradition to account for an experience so many individuals suffer.

My dissertation deals with the insurance responsibility for damage caused in relation with a major accident. The main goal of this task is to evaluate the state intervention in the form of a compulsory liability insurance for firms, which can cause a major accident. In my work I will support the thrust of the state intervention and will try to find a premise for that. I will show that the target of compulsory liability insurance is not to complicate life of new firms or of existing ones. I want to demonstrate that compulsory insurance leads to a better precaution for a major accident and it can also lead to precaution and safety investments. Further, I want to point out that compulsory insurance does not protect only firms, but also their creditors and employees. The protection company is to avoid a pointless risk in case that the firm itself takes too low an aversion towards risk. If the firm employes the compulsory liability insurance, the insurance company becomes another control body that is responsible for safety. This is consequently a benefit for taxpayers, whose money is not used for some damages caused by insolvent companies. The benefit for creditors and injured employees is also a big security in case of an accident, where an insurance company ensures a company's solvency. There are many other good reasons for compulsory insurance, and we can definitely find bad reasons too. Overall however, I see compulsory insurance as beneficial.

This thesis investigates the level of distraction while driving. The first part of the thesis is focused on the literature review in the field of distraction while driving. Several methods of measuring distraction while driving are being addressed here. The analytical part of the thesis draws on the video recordings of driving tests which were provided specifically for the purpose of this thesis. The resulting data were evaluated with goal to determine the time of visual fixation on traffic signs and advertising equipment in the urban area/non-urban area during the day/night and subsequent comparison of the visual perception of traffic signs and advertising equipment.

Title: Perceived attitudes of FTVS and PedF UK students to the subject of the first aid Aims: The aim of the work was to find out what kind of attitudes the selected groups of students from FTVS and PedF UK, who study physical education, take to learn the subject of first aid and what kind of attitudes they take to provide first aid. Methods: Used method for this thesis was the anonymous survey. The survey was consisted of 16 questions, which were created based on the professional literature. The distribution was realized using the survio.cz platform. The research group was consisted of 102 respondents - students. The research involved 76 women and 35 men. There were 70 students from FTVS UK and 32 students from PedF UK. All participants studied physical education either in a single subject or in combination with another subject. Most students were in the 3rd year of bachelor's study (29) and the 2nd year of master's study (29). The obtained data were displayed using graphs and tables, supplemented by verbal evaluation. Results: Based on the research, it was found that 85.3% of students rate the teaching of first aid in schools with a pedagogical focus as definitely important. This thesis deals with the severe accident of the gas-cooled fast reactor GFR. At the beginning of the study there is a review of the gas-cooled fast reactor subject. Next part is focused on description of possible solutions for severe accidents with emphasis on the solution applied in the Generation III+ reactors. Chapters that deal with material and thermal balance with severe accident of GFR demonstration unit, along with the chapter which analyses features of the corium, create a basis for the conceptual design of core catcher of GFR demonstration unit, which forms the final part of this thesis.

This diploma thesis deals with relation between car velocity and the impacts od traffic accidents. The basic keywords are described in the first part of the thesis and legislative regulations follow in the second chapter. The third and the fourth chapters introduce particular sanctions and statistics concerning the Czech Republic and they are compared to foreign countries. The influence of active safety on traffic accidents consequences is solved in the next part of the thesis. Subsequent figures and tables containing diffrent parametres are provided to demonstrate the relations between various crash car speed and particular braking distances. The tables also present mutual relations between rising initial velocity and changes in a numbers. The seventh chapter analyses a few selected case studies of real accidents and the final chapter focuses on individual relations between velocity and its impacts.

Les plexus choroïdes : une entrée au niveau cérébral pour l'activateur tissulaire du plasminogène (tPA) / Choroid plexus : an entry to the brain for tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA)

L’activateur tissulaire du plasminogène (tPA) est une protéase initialement découverte dans le sang pour son rôle fibrinolytique. C’est pour cette fonction que le tPA recombinant est utilisé pour traiter la phase aigüe de l’accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC) ischémique, même s’il présente quelques limites. Le tPA exogène peut passer du compartiment vasculaire au parenchyme cérébral où il peut influencer des processus physiologiques, et participer au devenir neuronal, notamment aggraver la mort neuronale lors d’un AVC ischémique. Le laboratoire a montré que le tPA peut traverser la barrière-hémato-encéphalique (BHE), par transcytose au travers des cellules endothéliales de la BHE et cela sous le contrôle des récepteurs LRP1 (Low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1). D’autres barrières existent au sein du système nerveux central notamment la barrière sang-liquide cérébrospinal (BSLCS), formée par les plexus choroïdes (PCs). Les PCs sont une route de migration pour les cellules inflammatoires et le LCS peut véhiculer des solutés, via les espaces péri-artériels, vers le parenchyme cérébral. Ainsi, dans notre première étude, nous avons testé l’hypothèse d’un passage du tPA vasculaire par les PCs. Pour cela, nous avons produit un tPA traçable in vivo et in vitro. Nous avons commencé par étudier la distribution du tPA suite à une injection intraveineuse (IV) avec comme focus les PCs et le LCS. Nos résultats montrent que le tPA exogène, suite à une injection IV, est retrouvé de manière séquentielle dans les PCs puis dans le LCS. Le tPA est donc capable de traverser les PCs. Nous avons alors développé un modèle de culture primaire de cellules épithéliales de PCs (CPECs) de souris pour disséquer le(s) mécanisme(s) sous-jacents à l’internalisation du tPA par les CPECs. Ce modèle nous a permis de montrer que l’internalisation du tPA par les CPECs est un phénomène actif, médié par un membre de la famille des récepteurs LRP, mais qui n’est ni LRP1, ni LRP2. Nous avons également mis en évidence la nécessité du domaine Finger du tPA pour son internalisation par les CPECs. Une étude préliminaire dans un modèle d’AVC suggère que l’ischémie modifie la cinétique de passage du tPA, puisqu’il y a plus de tPA dans les PCs des souris ischémiées que les souris non ischémiées.Dans une deuxième étude nous nous sommes intéressés à l’effet du tPA endogène sur les PCs. Nous montrons que l’absence de tPA endogène n’influence ni la morphologie des PCs, ni la diffusion du LCS. De plus, nous montrons que cette absence de tPA n’influence pas le nombre de macrophages et de lymphocytes T dans les PCs en conditions basales. / Tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) is a protease initially discovered in the blood for its fibrinolytic role. Accordingly, recombinant tPA has become the gold standard to treat the acute phase of ischemic stroke, despite some limitations. Exogenous tPA can switch from the vascular compartment to the brain parenchyma, where it can influence physiological processes, and participate in neuronal fate, including a worsening of neuronal death during ischemic stroke. In the team, it has been shown that tPA can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), by a transcytosis through BBB endothelial cells, under the control of LRP1 receptors (Low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1). The central nervous system has other barriers, including the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB), that relies on choroid plexuses (CPs). CPs are a migration route for inflammatory cells and a major source of CSF, which carries solutes to the cerebral parenchyma, via peri-arterial spaces. Thus, in a first study, we tested the hypothesis of a passage of vascular tPA through CPs. We thus produced a fluorescent tPA that can be tracked in vivo and in vitro. We first studied the distribution of tPA following intravenous (IV) injection, focusing on CPs and CSF. We show that after an IV injection, exogenous tPA is sequentially found in the CPs and then in the CSF. tPA is therefore able to cross the CPs. We then developed a model of primary culture of mouse choroid plexus epithelial cells (CPECs) to dissect the mechanism (s) underlying the internalization of tPA. This model allowed us to demonstrate that the internalization of tPA by CPECs is an active phenomenon, mediated by a member of the family of LRP receptors, but which is neither LRP1 nor LRP2. We also highlight the requirement for the Finger domain of tPA for its internalization by CPECs. A preliminary study in a murine stroke model suggests that ischemia alters the tPA passage kinetics, since there is more tPA in ischemic CPs than non-ischemic CPs.In a second study, we investigated the effect of endogenous tPA on CPs. We show that the absence of endogenous tPA influences neither CPs morphology nor CSF diffusion . Moreover we show that the absence of tPA does not influence the number of macrophages and T cells in the stroma of PCs under basal conditions.

Road Accident Reconstruction and Simulation With and Without EDR Data

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Road accident reconstruction and simulation investigates the accident causes, suggests improvements in vehicle design and investigates failures in vehicle control and safety systems such as the anti-lock brake system (ABS) and air-bag deployment. This thesis focuses on analysis of crash data from vehicles not equipped with collision warning systems. Vehicle parameters before and during an accident can be recorded using an Event Data Recorder (EDR) which helps in reconstructing an accident. This tool, installed in the vehicle, records different crash parameters like vehicle speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, seat-belt status, and air-bag deployment over a period that spens the accident. This thesis focuses on accident reconstruction with and without EDR data. A simulation software tool called HVE is used to visually recreate the reconstructed accidents. HVE is a platform to execute different accident simulation methods which are used for specific types of simulations. Two such simulation methods, EDSMAC4 and EDHIS, are discussed in this thesis. The former is an important method for vehicle-to-vehicle collisions and the latter is used for analysis of human behavior involved in the accident. Three real-life accidents were chosen for reconstruction and simulation. They were Bus and Car accident, Three Vehicle accident and Intersection accident. These particular accidents were chosen to represent a diverse selection of accidents based on the following parameters: the locations of the accidents, the vehicles involved in each accident, and the data available. A qualitative analysis of vehicle occupant's behavior is also presented for one of the three accidents. The thesis discusses in detail the reconstruction of these three accidents. Throughout these simulations, the thesis illustrates the advantages and limitations of the EDR and HVE simulation software for accident reconstruction and simulation.
