The climate change adaptation potential of integrating urban agriculture with architecture in inland South African cities

In response to the protracted and ineffective international action on the climate change crisis, this study critically considers the potential of building-integrated agriculture (BIA) as retrofitting strategy to improve the climate change adaptation (CCA) capacity of buildings in South African inland cities. Based on a pragmatism paradigm, the study uses a mixed method research design, to evaluate current BIA farms and their efficacy as CCA retrofitting strategies to improve the thermal performance of the local built environment. The exploratory research is structured in three phases. During the first phase the unused and underutilised spaces of Hatfield, a rapidly changing neighbourhood in Tshwane, South Africa, are mapped and defined in terms of their latent climate change adaptation capability. Secondly, the spatial and technological characteristics of the current BIA industry is surveyed through a series of interviews and observational studies. As the final research phase, a specific BIA farm type, passively controlled non-integrated rooftop greenhouses, is assessed in terms of its reciprocal thermal impact on the built environment. As outcome, the research findings reveal a land-use form that can contribute to the climate change adaptation response strategies of South African cities on a spatial level. Unfortunately, the design resolution and technological realisation, specifically the prevalent form currently implemented in Johannesburg and Tshwane, adversely affect both farmers and building occupants during overheated periods. As a result, the study advocates developing and testing contextually appropriate technological solutions in the BIA industry. L’apport du projet vocationnel dans le contexte du processus d’adaptation aux études universitaires

Cette thèse vise à analyser les expériences des étudiants au cours de leur processus d’adaptation aux études universitaires. La principale question de recherche est la suivante : Comment le projet vocationnel participe-t-il au processus d’adaptation aux études universitaires ? La recherche a porté sur l’expérience de huit participants. Ceux-ci ont été interviewés à deux moments : dans un premier temps, en 2012, alors qu’ils vivaient la transition des études secondaires aux études universitaires ; dans un deuxième temps, en 2017, à la fin de leurs cursus universitaire. Une analyse qualitative des données a été effectuée. Elle met en évidence le fait que l’accomplissement de certaines tâches d’adaptation facilite le passage de l’école secondaire à l’université. L’analyse qualitative indique également que le processus d’adaptation aux études universitaires commence bien avant l’arrivée à l’université. En fait, idéalement, le passage à l’école secondaire constitue un lieu de préparation aux études universitaires. Et cette préparation se loge surtout à l’enseigne de la construction identitaire.

TITLE: LEGALIZATION EFFECTS ON ILLEGAL MULTI-STATE CANNABIS DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Christopher W. Mullins Although a broad and detailed history of illegal cannabis trafficking networks exist, it remains a relatively understudied group in the current legal context. Prior research has been limited in three crucial aspects: it has been geographically limited to single states or jurisdictions, studies have been limited to examining one role while mentioning others only peripherally, and the majority of earlier similar studies were conducted from the 1980s through 2000s. It is unclear whether these findings represent current black market actors in the cannabis industry. This study will attempt to address these temporal, legal, and geographical gaps in empirical research through conducting in depth semi-structured interviews with 36 active illicit cannabis traffickers from California, Colorado, Illinois, and Oregon. Overall, it addresses how illegal cannabis distribution networks operate across varying roles, their decision making processes regarding legality, the processes involved in shipping or mailing cannabis, and the corresponding monetary system involved with conducting transactions without physical interaction. Overall findings mirrored prior research in that the black market of cannabis will persist and continue to flourish in the current legalization context. However, findings also indicated that black market actors are highly adept to adapting to policy, possess considerable business acumen, and detailed an entire system of trafficking and associated monetary system rarely mentioned previously. To theoretically contextualize this research, this study utilized institutional anomie theory, organizational adaptation theory, and rational choice theory.

Evolution of Gene Expression and Expression Plasticity in Long-Term Experimental Populations of Drosophila Melanogaster Maintained Under Constant and Variable Ethanol Stress

Gene expression responds to the environment and can also evolve rapidly in response to altered selection regimes. Little is known, however, about the extent to which evolutionary adaptation to a particular type of stress involves changes in the within-generation ('plastic') responses of gene expression to the stress. We used microarrays to quantify gene expression plasticity in response to ethanol in laboratory populations of Drosophila melanogaster differing in their history of ethanol exposure. Two populations ('R' populations) were maintained on regular medium, two ('E') were maintained on medium supplemented with ethanol, and two ('M') were maintained in a mixed regime in which half of the population was reared on one medium type, and half on the other, each generation. After more than 300 generations, embryos from each population were collected and exposed to either ethanol or water as a control, and RNA was extracted from the larvae shortly after hatching. Nearly 2000 transcripts showed significant within-generation responses to ethanol exposure. Evolutionary history also affected gene expression: the E and M populations were largely indistinguishable in expression, but differed significantly in expression from the R populations for over 100 transcripts, the majority of which did not show plastic responses. Notably, in no case was the interaction between selection regime and ethanol exposure significant after controlling for multiple comparisons, indicating that adaptation to ethanol in the E and M populations did not involve substantial changes in gene expression plasticity. The results give evidence that expression plasticity evolves considerably more slowly than mean expression.

Adaptation for Assembly Part Design Based on Assemblability and Manufacturability

Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) has been successfully applied to many fields especially in the design domain. Poor assembly part design increases the cost, raises the manufacturing complexity and reduces the product quality. However, little research has been devoted to predict the potential design problems in the early design stage. The objective of this paper is to integrate the indexes of assemblability and manufacturability into adaptive phase in CBR to avoid inexperienced mistakes. Early experimental results indicate that quantitative feedback of these indexes can guide novices to depict a good assembly part design, let experienced designers confirm their experience judgments and finally impart the experience to novices through CBR methodology.

Mesh adaptation through r-refinement using a truss network analogy

This project investigates the use of a truss network, a structural mechanics model, as a metaphor for adapting a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) mesh. The objective of such adaptation is to increase computational effi- ciency by reducing the numerical error. To drive the adaptation, or to give the scheme an understanding of accuracy, computational errors are translated into forces at mesh vertices via a so-called monitor function. The ball-vertex truss network method is employed as it offers robustness and is applicable to problems in both two and three dimensions. In support of establishing a state-of-the-art adaptive meshing tool, boundary vertices are allowed to slide along geometric boundaries in an automated manner. This is achieved via feature identification followed by the construction of 3rd order bezier surface patches over boundary faces. To investigate the ability of the scheme, three numerical test cases were investigated. The first comprised an analytical case, with the aim of qualitatively assessing the ability to cluster vertices according to gradient. The developed scheme proved successful in doing this. Next, compressible transonic flow cases were considered in 2D and 3D. In both cases, the computed coefficient of lift and moment were investigated on the unrefined and refined meshes and then compared for error reduction. Improvements in accuracy of at least 60% were guaranteed, even on coarse meshes. This is viewed as a marked achievement in the sphere of robust and industrially viable r-refinement schemes.

Effects of rhodopsin phosphorylation on dark adaptation and the recovery of sensitivity

Vision requires the photoreceptors in the eye to rapidly respond to changes in light intensity. These processes are accomplished within rod photoreceptors by the visual pigment rhodopsin that initiates a downstream signaling cascade called phototransduction. Rhodopsin is composed of an apoprotein opsin that is covalently bonded with light sensitive 11-cis retinal. Rhodopsin is activated when 11-cis retinal is photoisomerized into all-trans retinal. This isomerization initiates the phototransduction cascade that culminates in a change in current at the plasma membrane. Rhodopsin, once activated ("bleached"), can no longer absorb photons to activate phototransduction, and must be regenerated through the visual cycle. To enable the photoreceptors to respond to rapid changes in light intensities, phototransduction must terminate in a timely manner. Deactivation involves phosphorylation of activated rhodopsin by rhodopsin kinase, and then binding of visual arrestin. Exposing rods to daylight bleaches a large proportion of rhodopsin molecules. This exposure leads to desensitization of the photoreceptors and phosphorylation of bleached rhodopsin. Full recovery of receptor sensitivity is achieved when rhodopsin is recycled and regenerated through a series of steps to its ground state. The last step in this process is the dephosphorylation of rhodopsin. This dissertation focuses on how rhodopsin dephosphorylation affects rod sensitivity. I exploited a novel observation; mouse retinae when isolated from the retinal pigment epithelium (and eye cup), display blunted rhodopsin dephosphorylation. Isoelectric focusing followed by Western blot analysis of retinal homogenate from bleached isolated retinae showed little dephosphorylation of rhodopsin for up to four hours in darkness, even under conditions when rhodopsin was completely regenerated. Microspectrophotometric measurements of rhodopsin spectra show that regenerated phospho-rhodopsin has the same molecular photosensitivity as unphosphorylated rhodopsin and that flash responses measured by trans-retinal electroretinogram or single cell suction electrode recording displayed dark-adapted kinetics. Single quantal responses displayed normal dark-adapted kinetics, but rods were only half as sensitive as those containing exclusively unphosphorylated rhodopsin. I propose a revised model in which light-exposed retinae contain a mixed population of phosphorylated and unphosphorylated rhodopsin. Moreover, complete dark-adaptation can only occur when all rhodopsin has been dephosphorylated, a process that requires more than three hours in complete darkness.

Organizational Adaptation in Local Stormwater Governance

Much of the past research and policy analysis on issues of western water has focused on inter-basin river agreements, large infrastructure that captures and distributes water, and conflict between agricultural and urban water demands. My dissertation asks a set of different questions: How is water governed and managed within communities of Utah? How are the organizations that manage water responding to changes in population, water availability, and water quality policy? The answers to these questions are essential for understanding the ways in which changes to water quantity and quality will be addressed in the present and coming years. To better understand the ways in which local water management organizations, including irrigation groups and municipalities, manage water in Utah, I conducted three major types of research activities. First, in 2013, I attended 18 meetings of local water management organizations and conducted 18 interviews of organization representatives that managed water within the Heber and Cache Valleys of northern Utah. In 2014, I built upon the knowledge learned in the 2013 observations and interviews, and conducted an online survey of stormwater managers throughout the state of Utah. To build upon survey responses, I then conducted 30 follow-up interviews of stormwater managers that represented municipal stormwater programs. This research was funded with a combination of support from the National Science Foundation’s iUTAH EPSCoR project (iutahepscor.org) and funds from the Utah Storm Water Advisory Committee, a group that represents municipal stormwater programs at the state level. My findings suggest that local water management organizations are already responding to growth and expansion in urban land use, rising uncertainties in water supplies, and shifting responsibilities for stormwater governance and management toward local governments. To cope with these changes, organizations are using a combination of strategies, including working with private consultants and collaborating with one another. With increasing pressures from environmental change and added responsibilities through decentralized water policies, it is expected that these adaptive strategies will persist or even spread to other local water management organizations yet to take on these behaviors.

Bimanual Transfer and Retention of Visuomotor Adaptation is Driven by Explicit Processes

Reaching with altered visual feedback of the hand’s position in a virtual environment leads to reach adaptation in the trained hand, and also in the untrained hand (Wang & Sainburg, 2002). In the current study, we asked if reach adaptation in the untrained (right) hand is due to transfer of explicit (i.e., EA; conscious strategy) and/or implicit adaptation (i.e., IA; unconscious) from the left (trained) hand, and if the transfer of EA and IA changes depending on how one is made aware of the visuomotor distortion. We further asked if EA and IA are retained in the trained and untrained hand for 24 hours. Participants (n=60) were evenly divided into 3 groups (Strategy, No-Strategy, and Control). All participants reached to visual targets while seeing a cursor on the screen that was rotated 40° clockwise relative to their hand motion. Participants in the Strategy group were instructed on how to counteract the visuomotor distortion. The No-Strategy group was not told of the upcoming visuomotor distortion but was later asked to reach while engaging in any strategy they had learned in order to assess EA. Participants in the Control group were also not told of the upcoming visuomotor distortion and were never instructed to engage in any strategy when reaching. EA and IA were assessed in both the trained and untrained hands immediately following rotated reach training, and 24 hours later by having participants reach without the cursor when instructed to: (1) aim so that your hand lands on the target (to assess IA) and (2) use what was learned during training so that the cursor lands on the target (to assess EA + IA; exception of Control group). Results revealed that the groups differed with respect to the extent of reach adaptation achieved when initially training with the rotated cursor, such that the Strategy group had greater EA and less IA compared to the No-Strategy group in the trained hand. Unexpectedly, the Control group also showed less IA compared to the No-Strategy group, but was similar to the Strategy group. For both the Strategy and No-Strategy groups, EA was transferred between hands and was retained over time. While the extent of IA varied between groups in the trained (left) hand immediately following reach training trials, significant transfer of IA was not found in any of the three groups. Retention of IA was observed in the trained hand but decayed over testing days. Together, these results suggest that while initial EA and IA in the trained hand is dependent on how one is made aware of the visuomotor distortion, transfer and retention of visuomotor adaptation is driven almost exclusively by EA, regardless of instructions provided.
