Gryson, Alexis 01 July 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Application of the ADI-FDTD Method to Planar Circuits

Fan, Yang-Xing 01 July 2004 (has links)
The Finite-Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method is a very useful numerical simulation technique for solving problems related to electromagnetism. However, as the traditional FDTD method is based on an explicit finite-difference algorithm, the Courant-Friedrich-Levy(CFL) stability condition must be satisfied when this method is used. Therefore, a maximum time-step size is limited by minimum cell size in a computational domain, which means that if an object of analysis has fine scale dimensions, a small time-step size creates a significant increase in calculation time. Alternating-Direction Implicit (ADI) method is based on an implicit finite-difference algorithm. Since this method is unconditionally stable, it can improve calculation time by choosing time-step arbitrarily. The ADI-FDTD is based on an Alternating direction implicit technique and the traditional FDTD algorithm. The new method can circumvent the stability constraint. In this thesis, we incorporate Lumped Element and Equivalent Current Source method into the ADI-FDTD. By using them to simulate active or passive device, the application of method will be more widely.

On the Parameter Selection Problem in the Newton-ADI Iteration for Large Scale Riccati Equations

Benner, Peter, Mena, Hermann, Saak, Jens 26 November 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The numerical treatment of linear-quadratic regulator problems for parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) on infinite time horizons requires the solution of large scale algebraic Riccati equations (ARE). The Newton-ADI iteration is an efficient numerical method for this task. It includes the solution of a Lyapunov equation by the alternating directions implicit (ADI) algorithm in each iteration step. On finite time intervals the solution of a large scale differential Riccati equation is required. This can be solved by a backward differentiation formula (BDF) method, which needs to solve an ARE in each time step. Here, we study the selection of shift parameters for the ADI method. This leads to a rational min-max-problem which has been considered by many authors. Since knowledge about the complete complex spectrum is crucial for computing the optimal solution, this is infeasible for the large scale systems arising from finite element discretization of PDEs. Therefore several alternatives for computing suboptimal parameters are discussed and compared for numerical examples.

The generation of industrial wastes has been increased more and more in recent decades, motivating studies about a correct sustainable allocation and that also represents advantages for their generators. In this context, are included two companies of cleaning products niche, located in S?o Jos? do Mipibu/RN, that produces industrial sludge at a sewage treatment plant, and that is the main approach of this research. Given this, it was studied the incorporation potentiality of this sludge as a mineral addition in cement matrix for concrete production due it high capacity of wastes immobilization inside this material, which are subsequently used in the company for making precast articles. Were added different sludge concentrations (5, 10, 15 and 20%) in a common trait (1: 2: 3), and evaluated their techniques and microstructural implications via workability test in fresh state and compressive strength, full porosity and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the hardened state. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the process both from a technical and environmental view as economical. All concretes produced with residue showed an increase of workability given the nature of the waste that had surfactants substances capable of adsorbing tiny particles of air into the batter. However, for all concentrations were obtained lower compressive resistances than standard concrete, with a reduction of 39% for samples with 20% of sludge. This are attributed mainly to an increase of porosity in the transition zone of these material, resulting from increased formation of ettringite at the detriment to the formation of other compounds, but which still allows the use of these for the manufacture of concrete articles with non-structural nature, such as precast floor. In addition, the water absorption and void ratio increased slightly for all samples, except the concrete with 20% of waste that has a reduction for the last parameter. Given this context, the recommended maximum level is 20%, constituting a significant proportion and able to allocate sustainably all waste generated in the industry.

Despite years of research, the mechanisms by which alcohol affects neurological functions and the exact causes of cognitive impairment related to long-term use are unknown. In this sense, this master study proposed to observe how different doses of alcohol affect the addiction response and the learning ability of two fish species: Betta splendens and Danio rerio, the latter a commonly model due to organizational and functional characteristics shared with mammals. For this, different concentrations of ethanol (0%, 0.1%, 0.25%, 1% and 1.5%) were used in acute, chronic and withdrawal treatments. We tested the fish in three experimental protocols: 1) alcohol addiction potential using conditioned place preference, 2) associative conditioning using light as unconditioned stimulus and food as conditioned stimulus and 3) spatial learning using a maze without cues. For the alcohol addiction potential, preference between two different places in a shuttle box was tested before and after alcohol exposure (chronic and acute). In this test, the animals intoxicated by 0.1% did not change behavior, while animals receiving 1% and 1.5% alcohol changed the initial preference to the side where they received alcohol For the associative conditioning, the results show that the groups undergoing low dose (0.1%), both in chronic and withdrawal treatment, learned the task faster than control; groups under 0.25 and 1% alcohol withdrawal learned the task after control; groups chronically intoxicated with these doses did not learn the task. For the spatial learning test, fish submitted to acute and chronic treatments decreased the time to exit the maze; there were significant differences in the animal s performance in a dose-dependent pattern. This difference was not observed for the withdrawal treatment. Given these results, we conclude that the effects of alcohol on learning are dependent on the dosage. Furthermore, low doses of alcohol seem to maximize animal performance on learning tasks and do not alter their seeking behavior, while higher doses induced addition and hinder learning / O consumo excessivo de bebidas alco?licas ? respons?vel por in?meros efeitos prejudiciais aos indiv?duos e ? sociedade.

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) has a high content of fine materials and has been widely used due to its characteristics of high fluidity and cohesion. Fines from industrial waste or by-products may be used for the sake of sustainability, considerably reducing the consumption of cement associated with the possibility of maintaining or improving mechanical or durability properties. In this way, the present work investigated the feasibility of the development of SCC's made with high levels of mineral additions and hydrated lime. For this purpose, the cement was replaced by mineral additives (rice husk pozzolan, metakaolin and limestone filer) in the 60% content, based on the reference mixture with consumption of 451.1 kg / m? of cement, giving rise to new mixtures with consumption of cement between 167.7 kg / m? and 173.3 kg / m?. The hydrated lime was incorporated as an addition in three mixtures in the content of 5% on the total mass of the fine materials. The SCC's were characterized in the fresh state by the slump flow test, T500, J-ring, V-funnel and L-box. To evaluate the mechanical performance of the SCC's, tests of compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity and static modulus of elasticity, as well as transport properties related to durability were performed: capillary absorption, chloride ion diffusion, electrical resistivity and carbonation. The SCC's with mineral additions presented satisfactory mechanical performance, although lower than the reference mixture. The compressive strength at 28 days of the concretes with mineral additions showed a reduction of 15 to 60% in relation to the reference mixture, but all the results were compatible with structural concretes according to the requirements of NBR 6118 (ABNT, 2014). Regarding the durability, the concrete with mineral additions presented reduction of the diffusion coefficient of chloride ions that varied between 25.4% and 74.8%. The electrical resistivities of the reference concrete were much lower than those of the concretes with mineral additions, but all the studied compositions were classified as probable negligible corrosion rates. The electrical resistivities suffered great reduction when analyzed in carbonated samples. The analysis of the accelerated carbonation showed that the substitution of cement by mineral additions at high levels makes the SCC very susceptible to carbonation. As for the addition of hydrated lime, there was no positive influence on the mechanical performance of the SCC's studied, but it was observed that its use provided a reduction of the carbonation depth in the SCC's due to the alkaline reserve.

The manufacture of Portland cement is an activity that causes great environmental impact due to its high CO2 emission rate in the atmosphere. In order to reduce this impact, technical feasibility of alternative materials to replace Portland cement has been increasingly analyzed. It is already known the benefits that mineral additions infers to conventional concrete (CV), however, little is known of their use in self-compacting concrete (SCC) subjected to heat treatment. This work evaluates the effects of the incorporation of limestone fillers (LP) and metakaolin (MK) in the hydration of self-compacting concrete, when subjected to thermal curing. For this purpose six SCC compositions were produced, as a reference without mineral addition, four binary mixtures with replacement of cement with 10% MK, 10% LP, 20% MK and 20% LP and a tertiary with substitution of cement by 10% MK and 10% LP. The concrete were measured and made the tests slump flow, T500, L-box, V-test and J-ring to characterize the SCC fresh. After started the crystallization reactions (about 3 hours), range called pre-curing, the molded specimens were cured through total immersion in a warm bath. The heating rate used was 20 ?C/hr, reaching the maximum temperatures 50, 60 and 70 ?C, with subsequent cooling 10 ?C/hr. The total cycle time (pre-curing, heating, cooling and isothermal level) was 18 to 20 hours. Also, specimens were prepared which were cured by immersion in water at room temperature. The analyzed properties in the hardened state of all compositions were compressive strength at ages of 1, 3, 7 and 28 days at modulus, water absorption by capillarity, density, and total absorption to 28 days of age. The analysis of the microstructure of different concrete was given by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction at 1 and 28 days of age. The CAA thermally cured obtained a high increase in compressive strength at 1 day old, when compared to CAA cured at room temperature. For each dosage analyzed, there is a maximum temperature within the thermal cycle, which provides better mechanical performance to the CAA. The thermal curing causes changes in the microstructure, including, promote the rapid formation of calcium silicate hydrate (CSH). The additions of metakaolin and lime filer can replace Portland cement in percentages of 10% and 20%, satisfactorily in binary and tertiary mixtures. After 28 days the CAA cured thermally groups showed no resistance to compression to lower cured at 28 ? C. The wet thermal curing dip provides an increase in compressive strength at early ages, except for the concrete containing 20% filler limestone to replace Portland cement. For each studied trait, there was a temperature that was more effective, i.e., a temperature most suitable level. The analysis of the microstructure of the CAA can be seen that the high strength obtained at 1 day old, due to rapid formation of the CSH to the heat-treated CAA.

The grinding of low-size inventories or complex geometries with conventional sintered grinding wheels can be a competitive alternative in many applications and has a better performance in compare with superabrasive grinding wheels, regarding the machined surface quality for high material removal rates. In this research is evaluated the Al2O3 grinding wheels influence with different compositions of sintered microcrystalline and monocrystalline electrofused abrasive grains in the ADI Class 3 grinding result. The input variables are correlated with the process characteristics, such as the grinding forces components, the grinding wheels radial wear and the magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN), as well as the work result, such as the roughness and texture of the ground surfaces. The results showed the grinding wheels with lower sintered abrasive grains percentages generated the lower roughness values and lower radial wear, and revealed that all conventional grinding wheels evaluated caused no thermal damages (grinding burns) with the established input parameters process. It was verified amplitudes MBN correlation with the microhardness profiles generated by different grinding wheels on the ADI samples. The results of this research will contribute to the most appropriate specification of conventional grinding wheels to the ADI grinding, since there is a few information available about the ADI machinability in the grinding process.

Stability of BDF-ADI Discretizations

Felício dos Reis, João Miguel 17 August 2017 (has links)
We present new results on absolute stability for BDF-ADI (Backward differentiation formula Alternating Direction Implicit) methods applied to a linear advection and diffusion equations. Unconditional absolute stability of the BDF2-ADI method is proven for advection and diffusion separately, as well as to the BDF3-ADI method for the purely-diffusive case. Conditional absolute stability of the BDF4-ADI is also proven for the purely-diffusive case, and stability regions for BDF3-ADI and BDF4- ADI are given in terms of the PDE coefficients and numerical parameters. Lastly, numerical experiments are presented to support the theoretical results and conjectures. These experiments also suggest future work.
