January 2020 (has links)
Abstract: This research aims to relate Godmothers/Godfathers and the Wheel of Capoeira “Cultural Nation” in a municipality of the Ribeira Valley, state of São Paulo, Brazil. With inspiration in the work "Borderlands: the new mestiza", by Gloria Anzaldúa, narrative from the sponsorship relations between the members inside the Wheel of Capoeira and the researcher inside the disability’s world. The experience of Wheel has been solved in three kinds of wheel–Refused ́s Wheel, Capoeira ́s Wheel, University ́s Wheel-and extended to the community experience of disability. In the process of writing the limitations imposed by border states of existence, it is perceived that Affective Sponsorship and odd narratives as life affirmation methodologies, spiraling the mestizo’s loop and building the concept about Informal Godfathering. Such methodologies, composed of between many hands, arms, prothestics, legs, wheelchairs and voices, have an affect on viewaboutDisability and Godfathering. / Doutor

The foundations of affective development : proactive involvement of the educational psychologist

Cooper, Daphne C January 1991 (has links)
Includes bibliography. / In this thesis the foundations of affective development are discussed. The context of development is considered to be the relationship between infant and caregiver. The theoretical bases of developmental psychology and the practice of clinical psychology have been drawn on and applied to a model of promotive and preventive work. Affective development may be enhanced by psychologists, and it is therefore important for them to consider promotion of mental health as well as more traditional ways of therapeutic intervention. A survey was done in four infant clinics in Cape Town, and had the aim of establishing whether health care workers in this context were doing anything to promote affective development. There seemed to be minimal intervention in this regard. The second aim of the research section of this thesis addressed the question of whether there might be a place within the clinic structures for educational psychologists. To this end groups of caregivers were set up, and a pilot promotive programme was administered and evaluated over five sessions. In general the response of the mothers was positive. In the final chapter some of the particular strains that are placed on South African families are considered. Finally recommendations and ideas for establishing programmes that seek to promote affective development in contexts other than clinics are discussed.

A study of age and sex-related differences in the perception of emotional stimuli

Canizio, Nancy Mellor 01 January 1982 (has links)
In a tachistoscopic perception task, adult males in the Fels Research Institute's longitudinal population (Kagan and Moss, 1960) were found to have a higher recognition threshold for pictures depicting dependency scenes than adult females. The female subjects had a higher recognition threshold for aggressive scenes than the males. The present study was designed to further compare male and female perception of dependent and aggressive stimuli by including a developmental component to test if the perceptual differences vary with age. A benign or neutral stimulus category was added to aid in determining direction of any resulting differences: i.e., heightened perception or avoidance of perception, and a recognition memory task was added to the tachistoscopic task to determine if there were any differences between sensory and long term memory of emotional stimuli.

The influence of affect on product evaluations and search behavior: an integration of affect and the economics of information

Compeau, Larry D. 28 July 2008 (has links)
This research challenges the cognitive view of consumers as goal-driven, rational, problem-solving, information processors. Consumer’s feeling states, or affective responses, are viewed as beneficial to consumers in that they provide information for the decision-making process. Two separate studies, based on two divergent perspectives, were conducted to investigate consumers’ feeling states. An experimental study investigated the relationships between affective responses and product evaluations. Specifically, the economic theory of information was extended to include "affective information" and a model was developed that hypothesized that affective responses to affective information would influence subsequent product evaluations. Two experiments were conducted to examine the model. One experiment tested this notion using a verbal communication method (i.e., a written product description) and the other experiment employed the use of a visual communication method (i.e., a video). In general, the results supported the influence of affective responses on expectations of perceived quality across both communication methods. Moreover, when affective components were added to models based on cognitive responses only, significantly more variance was explained. The second study focused on an in-depth examination of consumer shopping experiences, centering on the feelings consumers experience while shopping, as a result of shopping, and during consumption of the products purchased. Moreover, the meaning of these shopping experiences, to the consumer, was also investigated. Six existential-phenomenological, in-depth interviews were conducted to develop both the structure of each participant’s shopping experiences and an interpretation of their meaning to the participants. In general, it was found that shopping is a relationship between self, others, and the world (i.e., environments such as social and political); it is an expressive communication act that discloses self to others and at the same time reflects meaning about self back from objects and others. Concomitantly, the world acts to constrain this process. Shopping is an emotional experience that appears to be highly influenced by significant others. The penalties and rewards of shopping are defined as much by others as they are defined by self. Moreover, the process of shopping appears to contribute as much to the meaning of shopping as does the result of shopping (i.e., the product purchased). The response of others to purchase decisions attached meaning for the shopping process and for the products purchased. / Ph. D.

Emotions in Pre-Qin Confucian Philosophy. / Emotions in Pre-Qin Confucian philosophy / Xian Qin ru jia zhe xue zhong de qing gan: Emotions in Pre-Qin Confucian Philosophy.

January 2014 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the question of "Emotions in Pre-Qin Confucian Philosophy", which mainly relates to four topics including "Emotion and Poem, Song, Rites, Music", "Emotion and Family", "Emotion and Life, Death", "Emotion and Dao, De". The important topic is "Emotion and Life, Death", the most core topic is "Emotion and Dao, De". I will discuss them based on this internal relationship among the four topics. Have made in-depth research into classical texts in Pre-Qin Confucian Philosophy, my point in this essay is that "The Pre-Qin Confucians were highly valued the role of Emotions, they took ‘grief and joy’ or ‘happiness, anger, sadness, grief’ as basic type of Emotions, which originate from Heaven, as well as is inborn content of human nature." When Confucian faced "the death of Yan Hui", his direct emotional reaction was "bitterly cried out". This emotional phenomenon poses a question to me: If Confucian have already known what "Heaven" wanted him to do, why he still cried so bitterly for "the death of Yan Hui"? I find that Confucian understood and experienced "Heaven and I", "Dao and I", "Myself and I", "You and I" which exhibited two dimensions and four aspects formations, as well as the phenomenon of "the Death of the Other" in emotional way. Confucian’s true feeling toward "Heaven" is "awe" or "fear", and his actual feeling to "the Unknown Dao" is "Hope". / My view is that Confucian opened a tradition focuses on understanding and experiencing "Life", "Life and Death" , "Dao" and "De" by the way of emotions connected to emotional phenomena which influenced his disciples, Mencius, Hsun Tzu, etc. It is needed to study "emotional phenomena" in the literature tradition which The Book of Songs started and philosophy tradition which originated from Analects. In the end, I come to the conclusion how Confucian’s viewed "Emotion and Life and Death": "People are inborn with Emotions." And Confucian’s emotional feeling toward "Tian Ming" was fear, his life had a specific hope to hear from "Dao". / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Thesis submitted: October 2013. / Thesis (Ph.D.) Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2014. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 254-263). / Abstracts also in English. / Liu Ni.

The Relationship Between the Grief Process and the Family System: The Role of Affect, Communication, and Cohesion

Schoka, Elaine 08 1900 (has links)
Sixty-six people who had recently experienced the death of a parent or a spouse completed a questionnaire packet to assess their current grief symptomatology and some characteristics of the relationships within their family. Participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire 4-5 weeks after the death and then again six months later. The present study compared two competing models to explain whether the grief process affects the characteristics of relationships within the family system or that family characteristics affect the experienced grief symptoms.

System justification requires psychological proximity

Unknown Date (has links)
System justification theorists have proposed that people will defend one's circumstances, even if they inflict psychological and material costs. This tendency has been found to extend even to outcomes that have not yet been decided, but are perceived as being likely; however, this research has only examined outcomes that will be decided on in the near future. According to Construal Level Theory (CLT), distant future events are represented primarily according to their essential features, while thoughts about temporally near events are more concrete and contextual. We hypothesized that system justification results from the motivational impact of low-level thinking, and so would be expected to occur for near-future, but not distant-future, outcomes. Consistent with our hypothesis, our Main Study found evidence of system justification only when outcomes were to be decided in the near future. Distant future outcomes, in contrast, were viewed as being more undesirable as they became increasingly likely. / by Nicholas J. Modeling Student Affective State Patterns during Self-Regulated Learning in Physics Playground

Kai, Shiming January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation research focuses on investigating the incidence of student self-regulated learning behavior, and examines patterns in student affective states that accompany such self-regulated behavior. This dissertation leverages prediction models of student affective states in the Physics Playground educational game platform to identify common patterns in student affective states during use of self-regulated learning behavior. In Study 1, prediction models of student affective states are developed in the context of the educational game environment Physics Playground, using affective state observations and computer log data that had already been collected as part of a larger project. The performances of student affective state prediction models generated using a combination of the computer log and observational data are then compared against those of similar prediction models generated using video data collected at the same time. In Study 2, I apply these affective state prediction models to generate predictions of student affective states on a broader set of data collected from students participants playing Physics Playground. In parallel, I define aggregated behavioral features that represent the self-observation and strategic planning components of self-regulated learning. Affective state predictions are then mapped to playground level attempts that contain these self-regulated learning behavioral features, and sequential pattern mining is applied to the affective state predictions to identify the most common patterns in student emotions. Findings from Study 1 demonstrate that both video data and interaction log data can be used to predict student affective states with significant accuracy. Since the video data is a direct measure of student emotions, it shows better performance across most affective states. However, the interaction log data can be collected natively by Physics Playground and is able to be generalized more easily to other learning environments. Findings from Study 2 suggest that self-regulatory behavior is closely associated with sustained periods of engaged concentration and .self-regulated learning behaviors are associated with transitions from negative affective states (confusion, frustration, and boredom) to the positive engaged concentration state. The results of this dissertation project demonstrate the power of measuring student affective states in real time and examining the temporal relationship to self-regulated learning behavior within an unstructured educational game platform. These results thus provide a building block for future research on the real-time assessment of student emotions and its relationship with self-regulated learning behaviors, particularly within online student-centered and self-directed learning contexts.
