Sensory and Affective Dimensions of Dyspnea on Exertion in Young Obese WomenMarines-Price, Rubria January 2015 (has links)
Introduction: Dyspnea on exertion (DOE) is a common symptom experienced by 40% of healthy obese women. Dyspnea has at least two dimensions: a sensory (intensity) and an affective dimension. The affective dimension was measured in this study by unpleasantness and negative emotions (i.e., depression, anxiety, frustration, anger, and fear) related to DOE, measured as rating of perceived breathlessness (RPB). Purpose: To examine whether RPB during exercise was associated with unpleasantness and negative emotions and the relative exercise intensity and to examine whether 12-week exercise training can reduce unpleasantness and negative emotions related to breathlessness in healthy obese women. Methods: A secondary analysis was conducted from data collected from an interventional study. Volunteers underwent body measurements, underwater weighing, pulmonary function testing, and a constant-load cycle test (60 watts). RPB, unpleasantness, and negative emotions related to DOE were obtained. Results: There was a positive relationship (n = 74) between RPB and unpleasantness (r = .61) and RPB and anxiety (r = .50). There was a relationship (n = 52) between unpleasantness and %VO₂max, r = .28 as well as %HRmax r = .38; anxiety and %HRmax, r = .28 (p < .05). Unpleasantness and anxiety were different between groups (n=55). Unpleasantness was higher in the +DOE group (M = 3.91, SD = 2.29) than the–DOE group (M = 1.37, SD = 2.01), t(53) = 4.27, p = < .0001; Anxiety was higher in the +DOE group (M = 2.76, SD = 2.99) than in–DOE group (M = 0.72, SD = 1.23), t(41.95) = 3.45, p = < .001. Within group analysis (n = 13) showed that participants in +DOE experienced a decrease in unpleasantness after 12-week exercise training (p = .013; paired t test). There was a main effect of exercise on unpleasantness (p = .0307) and a group x training interaction (p = .0285) indicating that persons with DOE prior to the exercise intervention experienced less unpleasantness after the intervention. Conclusion: Unpleasantness and anxiety have been identified as the most common symptoms associated with RPB. Healthy obese women who engage in physical activity may experience higher rates of unpleasantness and anxiety based on their relative intensity of exercise. In addition, women with DOE who experience unpleasantness as an associated symptom could possibly decrease the level of unpleasantness if they engage in an exercise-training program.

Previous issue date: 2012-11-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this research was to comprehend, by prioritizing the affective dimension, how the teacher that works with children's literature constitutes himself, considering that to Wallon (theoretical reference for the present study) the affective dimension integrated with the cognitive and motor dimension constitutes the person. The research had a qualitative approach and in order to gather information an interview with directed questions was held, such interview was characterized as an autobiographical narrative since the fifth grade teacher tells the story of her life from her childhood to present day. The pieces of information were organized in a chart to facilitate the analysis and discussion. Right after this stage six main points were raised: living in the school environment; remarkable teachers; playing around; contact with books; solidarity and the role of other people influencing the teacher's work. The present study showed that affection influences in classroom relationships and that the other person (students, former teachers or the author of the literary work) contributes to the formation of the literature teacher / O objetivo desta pesquisa foi compreender, priorizando a dimensão afetiva, como o
As informações
Após essa etapa foram levantados seis eixos: convivência com o meio escolar;

E a educação escolar é parte central neste processo. / This research aimed to understand how the "future project" regarding the socio-affective dimension is built by high school students in Portugal and in Brazil. The research was developed in three classes of three public schools in Coimbra, Portugal and also in two high school classes of a same style public school in Piracicaba, Brazil. The project was based on the concept of culture and adolescence as a cultural construction. The definition of future project was adopted in the above mentioned dimension characterized by defining affections, passions, as well as by the power of a human action as a possibility of becoming, being able to be affected by the other in a process of endless possibilities of creation and interlacing. Through questionnaires and focus groups with adolescents of both nationalities, it was possible to analyze their narratives about the future project on the socio-affective dimension; to get to know the speeches produced by them on issues regarding sexuality and gender; and to investigate their stories about relationships, gender relations and homosexuality questioning and reflecting the importance of discussing these subjects in the school context. The survey found out that most adolescents had projects for their future and considered marriage as the main future plan regarding the socio-affective dimension. Moreover, it pointed out the differences that permeate several boys’ and girls’ behaviors. It was concluded that the questioning of these issues from social and ethical questions that allow teenagers to reflect on their relationships among peers, in the community, with family, responsibility, respect, and criticality is essential. And education is central to this process. / FAPESP: 2014/02224-6

Coming to faith in Christ : case studies of muslims in KenyaStrahler, Reinhold 30 November 2009 (has links)
This thesis analyses the conversion processes of 17 urban Muslims in Kenya who decided to
follow Jesus Christ. It first describes conversion from a multidisciplinary perspective by
introducing sociological, psychological, anthropological, theological and missiological
understandings of such a change in religious affiliation.
Next in-depth interviews are analysed using principles of grounded theory, where new
theory is developed by interaction between data from reality, the analysis and existing theories
(abductive reasoning).
The main findings are that the conversion of Muslims who accept Jesus Christ as Saviour
and Lord is a process that develops over a period of time through phases with a cognitive and
an affective dimension. Changes with regard to convictions and attitudes take place
simultaneously on several properties or ‘layers’ of both dimensions. The process is influenced
by significant factors in the form of causal and intervening conditions, resulting in
consequences for the convert in the form of a transformation as well as in changed
relationships with the community. Gender, socio-economic level, education as well as the
community from which the converts come influence the process.
In order to describe the complex dynamics that are at work in such conversion processes
of Muslims, a Matrix of Conversion Processes is developed in which the multiple movements
of a convert on the two dimensions are put in relation to six chronological phases. A matrix of
different types of conversion processes and the description of four typical processes emerge
from the analysis.
In order to facilitate conversion processes, cognitive and affective elements need to be
addressed together. The interaction between different factors, the will-power of the person and
the influence of God determine the development, an understanding that is relevant for
conversion studies, as well as for missiology and the missionary task of the church in Kenya
and beyond. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.Th. (Missiology)
