"Place of our own": the anthropology of space and place in the Afrikaner Volkstaat of OraniaHagen, Lise 01 1900 (has links)
In anthropological studies place is often taken for granted, “just” the locale where
other interesting, more significant things happen (De Jongh 2006:79). I argue
that rather than a mere backdrop to activities, the landscape of Orania is
significant and that physical place is essential for the construction of an Orania
identity. I ethnographically examine whether the physical setting of Orania can be
seen as a prime signifying system through which a particular other interesting, more significant things happen (De Jongh 2006:79). I argue

Occupying the physical land is a form of collective identity that helps create
ethnic identities (Tilley 2006:11-13). Orania is an authentic place-bound
expression of this quest for identity and Oranians define their identity through
their model of space and of their land. The physical boundaries are expanded
when support groups outside of the settlement become an integral part of the
activities in the community, and socio-political boundaries are tested by an inand
outflux of community members and the constant presence of South African
and international press, and visitors.

Landscape does not merely comprise the land, but also includes the lived
experiences and attitudes of the inhabitants. Landscape as text, “a medium to be
read for the ideas, practices and contexts constituting the culture which created
it” (Ley 1985:419) proves to be a legitimate and constructive way to make sense
of the landscape. As with texts, the landscape as text is subject to multiple
readings. The focus on textual landscape offers an expanded perspective on
space and place, and in this case texts also amplify the Oranian space
exponentially.
Different types of landscapes - culturescapes, landscape as text and textual
landscapes - are building blocks in the construction of an Orania identity. Finally,
I would emphasise that Orania, and by extension this study, is not just an
academic concept, but a product of the lived experiences and opinions of people

M.A. / During the latter part of the Eighties, a growing number of Afrikaans writers and musicians rebelled against the monolithic state of "Afrikaner-culture". The dissidents did not want to identify or be identified with the Apartheid government, and they tried alternative ways in which to live out their cultural heritage (Uys in Rathbone, 1989:25). This search for an "alternative" led to the coining of the term "Alternative Afrikaans Movement" (Altematiewe Afrikaanse Beweging) in the media. A part of the Afrikaner-culture had been appropriated by certain institutions that were seen as the "centre" (such as cultural, political and religious institutions). These institutions strove to create a monolithic culture of unity without taking into account that such "unity" may lead to stagnation of the cultural repertoire due to an abhorrence to change. Change is part of the dynamic processes of culture, and any change can be due to external and as internal factors. In the case of the Afrikaner-culture of the eighties external factors such as changes in the world politics, the fall of communism and economic sanctions, influenced the cultural centre. Internal change also played a pivotal role in the dramatic changes that Afrikaner culture underwent during the late eighties and the early nineties. The total control of the centre was rejected by entities such as the Alternative Afrikaans movement on the periphery of the culture. Theperi_phery challenged the centre with lyrics of Alternative Afrikaans Music as well as texts that were deemed "alternative" such as the novel Suidpunt-jazz by Andre Letoit. The centre _proposed an amalgamation of Afrikaner culture and Afrikaner power. The Alternative Afrikaans Movement can be likened to Degenaar's (1982:3) proposal of the morally-critical Afrikaner that wants to separate Afrikaner power and Afrikaner culture. In this study the basic premise is that culture cannot be seen as a static or isolated phenomenon. Vlasselaers (1997:14) describes the concept of culture as a poststructuralist discursive process between a multitude of networks. The complexity inherent to cultural construction has lead me to make use of systems theory in order to best accommodate the complexities. Many academics (such as Segers, Schmidt and Vlasselaers) have examined the phenomena of culture and cultural studies through literary studies "as it is inadequate to study literary texts in isolation from their contexts" (Schmidt, 1997:119). The systems theory operates as an instrument with which one may reconstruct a model of interacting items, i.e. a system. Themes voicing the rebellion of Alternative Afrikaans Movement can be discerned in the texts deemed "alternative". Thematic devices include the reappropriation of institutionalized cultural symbols such as the ox-wagon (ossewa), and the debunking of a canonized history. The Alternative Afrikaans Movement also took cognisance the socio-political milieu of the eighties into their texts in order to voice their dissatisfaction with the "official" silence maintained about the socio-political status quo. Ultimately, this investigation is a study of the workings of a "culture of difference" (Vlasselaers, 1996:17), honin_g an investigative instrument that can be applied to different cultural phenomena, including literature. This study sheds some light on the dynamics of Afrikaner-culture, and also on the invaluable role that diversity plays within a multicultural South African context.

The children settling with their parents in the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) after the Great Trek all received Christian based education. The unique way in which both the country and the nation developed was the result of Christian based education. It had a direct influence on the development and functioning of the ZAR resulting in the forming of a Christian country with a Christian based constitution and Christian based laws. Christianity and Christian based education also influenced the social lives, culture and worldview of the people living in the ZAR, leaving a permanent mark on the Afrikaner nation.
The stern Calvinistic religion, together with the influences of early Pietism and the worldview of the Romanticism as well as the traditional Christian based education brought from the Netherlands, all worked together to mould the Afrikaners into a unique nation. Religion was the one outstanding factor that determined all aspects of the lives of the Afrikaners, from their character and worldview to their way of speech and the standard of education given to the children. The goal of all education was to enable children to study the Bible - the Handbook to Life - and to become members of the Church.
Their faith in and commitment to the Lord, was the force that kept the Afrikaners a unique nation with a strong character despite the extreme living conditions and changing circumstances through which they lived in the short years of the existence of the ZAR. The people living in the ZAR were the carriers of the influence of the Christian based education and the stories of their lives bear witness to the impact their education had on the development of the country and the nation. The legacy of Christian based education, as it was used in the ZAR, is still alive in the hearts and minds of Afrikaners today.
The focus of the thesis made it necessary to use material from several different academic fields. Aspects of South African Church history, the general and political history of South Africa and the ZAR, the history regarding the development of education, as well as the social and cultural history of the Afrikaner nation were brought together to give a picture of the impact that Christian based education had on the ZAR.

Regimes and rights on the Orange River: possessing and dispossessing Griqua Philippolis and Afrikaner OraniaCavanagh, Edward January 2012 (has links)
Submitted as requirement of the degree of Master of Arts History, Faculty of Humanities University of the Witwatersrand, January 2012 / Griqua Philippolis (1824-1862) and Afrikaner Orania (1990-present) are explored in this thesis, according to a legal-history framework that allows for a comparative appraisal of their foundations. As I argue, property – specifically, property in land – helps us to understand sovereignty and the question of rights in the South Africa. As this thesis explores, both settlements were formerly home to prior inhabitants (the San in Philippolis; Coloured squatters in Orania), and these inhabitants had to be transferred away. Both communities emerged out of contested and dynamic political contexts – situations that would determine how they saw themselves and others. Land regulations were devised within these respective contexts, in direct response to specific external pressures and the demands of the market. Internally, both polities were tightly governed. Externally, to various institutions and individuals, both argued for their ‘rights’ – mainly rights to land and to special treatment – all the time. Indeed, in a way, this study is an historical exploration of the effective deployment of ‘rights talk’, and to that end, my argument carries across two centuries right up to the present day using Orania and Philippolis to do this. This thesis, then, is a study about land rights, and the different regimes that create and erase them, that acknowledge and ignore them; it is a local history of settler colonialism past and present, using two case studies to explore the continuities of South Africa’s ever-pertinent land question. / XL2018

Thesis (MPhil(Visual Arts. Illustration))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / This thesis is a critical analysis of Afrikaans illustrated children’s Bibles as cultural texts
in Afrikaner nationalist discourse. Christian Calvinism was a distinct signifier in
Afrikaner nationalism and served as an instrument in the construction of Afrikaner
national identity. I propose in this study that Afrikaans children’s Bibles encoded the
principles of Afrikaner nationalism and were used as didactic tools for the configuration
of an exclusive national consciousness. A potential pitfall in the analysis of Afrikaans
children’s Bibles as nationalist texts is the fact that these books were translated from
Dutch or English into Afrikaans. However, the act of translating the Bible, ‘the Word of
God’, into Afrikaans served to confirm the ‘totem’ of Afrikaner Christian-Nationalism.
The appropriation of the Bible re-contextualized the ‘Holy Scriptures’, placing them
within the milieu of Afrikaner national identity and consciousness: language and religion
thus became interrelated catalysts in the social construction of Afrikaner national
consciousness. Finally, my own reinvention of the Afrikaans picture Bible – in opposition
to conventional illustrated children’s Bibles – is put forward and discussed as a
postmodern text that encodes a radically different post-Apartheid conception of identity.

Text in Afrikaans / It has become clear that the continued existence of the Afrikaner in the 21st century will demand a recontextualisation of the identity and values attached to being an Afrikaans-speaking South African in a post-apartheid South Africa. Various institutions and intellectuals are already busy with this process. The study used the social phenomenology of Alfred Schutz to describe and analyse the first steps taken in the recontextualisation of Afrikaner identity from the perspective of letter writers to the Afrikaans daily newspaper, Beeld.
Phenomenology accepts that the world of everyday life is man's fundamental and pervasive reality. Schutz uses concepts like the social stock of knowledge, typifications and intersubjectivity to explain how people interpret their everyday reality so that it becomes meaningful to themselves and others in communication. The task of the phenomenologist would be to question the taken-for-grantedness of this life world and identify its underlying principles (or essences).
The study found that, while the letter writers did adjust their typification of the Self, no fundamental review of their typification of the Other (black South Africans) took place. Letter writers managed to free themselves of the baggage of apartheid after De Klerk gave up power in 1990 and declared white South Africa ready for negotiations for a new democratic South Africa. Together with giving up power, letter writers also freed themselves from the aspect of Christian-nationalism which was one of the fundamental building blocks of Afrikanerskap. The Afrikaner of 2004 seems to be a white minority, proud of their language and culture, and fighting for their right to speak and hear Afrikaans.
However, no major revision of the Other has taken place. The study will show that letter writers have adjusted their perception of blacks in so far as it became practically relevant to do so for survival in the new South Africa. Very few, if any, fundamental changes took place in terms of the perception of racial or cultural superiority. / Communication Science / M.A. (Communication)
