Holmgren, Saga January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the interplay between economics, gender, and materiality in an economic sector that has received little attention from performativity scholars: agriculture. During the early 20th century, Swedish agricultural education was organized along gendered lines. I study how male and female schools differed in their economics education. In so doing I will explore the question: How were economic and non-economic agents assembled in Swedish lower agricultural education during the first half of the 20th century? To answer this the thesis follows a rural domestic school and an agricultural school, intended for female and male students respectively. The method is a qualitative text analysis of firstly archival material from the schools, secondly textbooks in agricultural economics and bookkeeping, and thirdly Swedish Government Official Reports. The main finding is that performance of economic theory creates both the economic and the non-economic. The farm as a unit of production and reproduction was split into home and business, in an act of interessement. The two forms of smallholder education were reformulated as agricultural education and domestic education, thereby placing the young men in a productive sphere and the young women in a domestic, reproductive sphere. Economic agents were assembled in the agricultural school as resources for qualculation were provided, not least through economic and agronomic quantification. In the rural domestic school, conversely, resources for qualculation were removed as women’s farm labor was framed as an expression of immeasurable maternal love. The economic actor was thus assembled in relation to his female Other. In summary, performing the economic man means performing economic and performing man.

Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T19:35:47Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 4799.pdf: 20069292 bytes, checksum: 50776cc264a1855ead22398e88e0ab4a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-11-14 / This research aimed at salvaging the history of creation of three school institutions from Minas Gerais State (Brazil), as far as history, capitalism and education are concerned, focusing on the Professional Education, mainly for the Agricultural Teaching: Uberlândia Campus, belonging to the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Triângulo Mineiro (previously named Uberlândia Agricultural School and Federal Agrotechnical School of Uberlândia) and Rio Pomba Campus (previously named Rio Pomba Agricultural School, Agricultural Gymnasium of Rio Pomba and Federal Center of Technological Education of Rio Pomba) and the one of Barbacena (once named Barbacena Agricultural school, Agricultural School of Barbacena and Agrotechnical Federal School of Barbacena), which belong to the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of the Southest of Minas Gerais. Its objectives were the following: a) understand what motivated the creation of these institutions in the countryside of Minas Gerais State, in terms of education policies and its relations to the national economy aimed at the agricultural sector; b) understand if the pedagogical practices of the Agricultural School were in accordance with the desired aim , considering its foundation, and if they were in consonance with the laws; c) investigate if the formation of the Agricultural or Farming Technician, offered by these institutions, has been in accordance with the Agricultural modernization during the researched period and if this formation was accomplished in and to this modernization desired by the Federal Government; d) analyze its curricular structures and verify if they were all identical; e) evaluate which social class it was aimed at. In order to carry out this investigation, a sinuous methodological way was used to comprehend a bibliographic review of the most adequate themes to the research and the analysis of oral, iconographic and written sources. As theoretical support, we can highlight the contributions of Magalhães (2004), Faria Filho (2003), Werle (2004), Fonseca (1961a; 1961b), Cunha (1979a; 1979b; 1983; 1984; 2000a; 2000b; 2000c; 2001), Ianni (1996), Prado Júnior (1967), Ramos (1995), Romanelli (1998), which are already considered acknowledged studies by the Brazilian traditional, technical and professional education, mainly, in the context of its public policies and the critical appreciation of the composition of this chain of institutions in the national scenario. In their historic trajectory, the searched schools experienced a series of transformations which, in the superficiality of the legal texts, were conducted for administrative reasons, but which, under a hermeneutic point of view, were deliberated transformations to meet economic issues. The acknowledgement that the economy and the political interests determined the routes of Education in Brazil, becomes even more obvious when, in the modernization context, the School-Farm System was implanted, according to which pedagogical practice and the production in economical conditions are confused and direct the formation of the technician to act as an agent of modernization. The used sources (public and institutional archives, local newspapers, Town-hall minutes, pictures, bibliographical mapping, etc) enabled the analyzes and the comprehension of the facts and educational discussions in national and regional levels and permitted to confront them with those described by the specialized literature to the Brazilian reality. Finally, the thesis establishes a dialog with historic and theoretical bases and also search for interrelations with Brazilian Education issues, mainly, the ones which refer to Agricultural teaching.

This study also assists in the understanding of the goals and directions of the institutions of agricultural education in Southern Minas Gerais, important region for agricultural production in the time frame chosen for the analysis: 1948 to 1985.The choice of the period has since the early initiatives for school creation until the end of the period of military dictatorship in Brazil to analyze the implementation of the model school - farm, a result of the relations between the United States and Brazil. The primary documents were the main basis of research, among them the reports of management; student identification cards; enrollment maps; academic contents lists; school subjects lists and table of content; letters with requests from students and teachers to the school secretary; newspapers; laws and decrees relating to the period, opinions, resolutions, messages of the governors, reports of the President of the Province; pictures of the school and the city. Were also carried out interviews with former students and school personnel. The method chosen to make such analyzes is dialectical and historical materialism, which investigates the intimate connection between the way in which society produces its material existence and the school institution that creates. As a reference we chose authors who investigate the history of school institutions as Magalhães (1998), Saviani (2007), Araújo (2007) (2000) and Buffa; Nosela (2013). The results indicated the connection of the school with the need for training of rural workers and the modernization of the field, driven by the influence of the United States after 1960. These actions promote changes in national production and the agricultural education based on the implementation of the school-farm model.

A realização desse trabalho de pesquisa contribuiu para a construção de um perfil para cada escola e para a área de ciências agrícolas no período abordado / Abstract: The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to comprehend the contributions of agricultural schools in the institutionalization of agricultural sciences between 1930 e 1950. Four schools were focused in this study - the Escola Superior de Agricultura 'Luiz de Queiroz', Escola Nacional de Agronomia, Escola Superior de Agricultura do Estado de Minas Gerais em Viçosa and Escola de Agricultura da Bahia. To understand this process I turned my attention on how each school has constructed a meaning and has practiced scientifics activities. I have either observed how those meanings and practices were related to the local context and to the demands originated from the process of federal recognition that began in 1934. The main assumption of this research is that two political projects for the Brazilian agriculture were based on two scientific traditions, distinguishing two kinds of professionals, specializations and resulting on a center and a periphery in the area. At the end of this doctoral thesis it was possible to construct a profile for each school and for the agricultural sciences in the focused period / Doutorado / Doutor em Ciências
