Archival dissonance in the Cuban post-exile historical novelHelmick, Gregory Gierhart 27 August 2010 (has links)
This dissertation investigates a common methodology of staging Cuban and Cuban exile historiography in three novels by Roberto G. Fernández (b. 1950), Antonio Benítez Rojo (1931-2005), and Ana Menéndez (b. 1970). This methodology develops a counterpoint between, first, the diagetic (strictly fictional) stories of characters who attempt to research or write Cuban history from exile and, second, the extradiagetic (extra or non-fictional) use of actual sources and tendencies of Cuban, Caribbean, and U.S. historiography structuring the narrative fiction. Reinforcing the density of the discursive field, the authors additionally incorporate works of Spanish, Latin-American, Caribbean, and/or Cuban literatures as constitutive elements of their fictions’ extradiagetic “noise.”
I make the case that Fernández’s, Benítez Rojo’s, and Menéndez’s U.S.-produced historical novels develop a critical and investigative approach to the politics of Cuban exile and diaspora historiography. As such, they participate in the emergence of a post-exile Cuban literature, in dialogue with broader Caribbean and Latin American literatures. I analyze what I call archival dissonance in (1) the first, paradigm-setting novel in the body of historical fiction narrated from the frame of a dystopian future by Roberto G. Fernández, La vida es un special; (2) in Ana Menéndez’s use of reader response and archival research methods to critically recast a history of family division under the Cuban Revolution as popular romance fiction in Loving Che and (3) in the only novel Antonio Benítez Rojo lived to write in the United States, Mujer en traje de batalla (about the accidental arrival to New York City of the “first female Cuban physician” Enriqueta Faber, 1791-1827). Departing from the methodology presented with the narrative structure of each of the novels, in which a diagetic process of a character’s reading and/or writing Cuban history from a site of exile is countered by extradiagetic documentary and metaliterary information, I examine each novel’s metacritical approach to the politics of exile and diaspora historiography, as well as toward Cuban, Caribbean, Latin American, and/or U.S. literary textual economies. / text

Liberating machismo: deconstructing the stereotypes of Latinidad in Alberto Korda's Guerrillero HeroicoUnknown Date (has links)
This thesis examines the Alberto Korda Guerrillero Heroico image within the realm of U.S. Latino/a fiction. Drawing from several trends that constitute Latino/a identity as either resistant to white mainstream hegemonies, or as a performative construct, I argue that a collective Hispanic identity is found somewhere between these two extremes. Corporate discourses have perpetuated stereotypes of Latino masculinity to limit any alternate and nuanced portrayal of Latinidad. Specifically, I posit that the corporate use of the Che photograph illustrates Latin men as hypermasculine, limiting Latin-ness to a performance of its mainstream depiction. To combat the commercialization of the print, the novel Loving Che imagines new possibilities for the Hispanic community and its relationship to the U.S. market, challenging the idea of a pan-Latino/a identity with archival photographis of the comandante. Together, both texts bridge performative and resistant trends, providing a potential Latinidad that resists and eludes corporate hegemonies. / by Johanna Ayala-Walsh. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2012. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

Aplicações de técnicas de análise multivariada em experimentos agropecuários usando o software R / Application of multivariate analysis in agricultural experiments using R softwareSartorio, Simone Daniela 08 July 2008 (has links)
The use of the techniques of multivariate analysis is restricted to large centers of research, the higher companies and the academic environment. These techniques are very inte- resting because of the use of all answers variables simultaneously in theoretical interpretation of the data set, considering the correlations between them. One of the main obstacle to the usage of these techniques is that researchers interested in the quantitative research do not know them. The other di±culty is that most of the software that allow this type of analysis (SAS, MINITAB, BMDP, STATISTICA, S-PLUS, SYSTAT etc.) are not in public domain. Publishing the use of Multivariate techniques can improve the quality of the research, decrease the time spend and the cost, and make easy the interpretation of the structures of the data without cause damage of the information. In this report, were con¯rmed some advantages of the multivariate techniques in a univariate analysis for data of agricultural experiments. The analysis were taken with R software, a open software, \"friendly\" and free, with many statistical resources available.

This paper aims to present a methodological proposal to the reading of two works (Quem perde ganha e O Cavaleiro do Sonho: As aventuras e desventuras de Dom Quixote de La Mancha) by Brazilian writer Ana Maria Machado, intended for children and youth in order to encourage the literary literacy and the reader formation in a public school in the city of Ananindeua, in the state of Pará. It is considered, thus, the literary literacy as a right of all (Queirós, 2014) and the literary text being the core of the Portuguese discipline for being a manifestation of excellence of memory, of operation and creativity of Portuguese language (Silva, 1988). The literature teaching in public schools is target of criticism and has contributed timidly to form proficient readers, since the schooling process has occurred inappropriately and the teacher‟s challenge is to find the balance between the interests of personal enjoyment and the needs of literary schooling (Cosson, 2014). It is necessary, therefore, to rethink the problem so that the literacy text is not just nomenclatures object, grammatical banalities and superficial analysis (Smith, 2011), but an instrument that can raise reflections and relevant contribution to the lives of students. This paper is organized in three chapters: the first discusses the teaching of literature and the reader formation, the second deals with the literary universe of Ana Maria Machado and the third brings a proposal of pedagogic intervention. It is intended, this way, that the school promotes the insertion of children and youth literature and of the classical in their daily lives in order to contribute so that the reading of literary text be a meaningful and pleasurable activity for elementary school students and, thus, encourage the reader formation in public schools.

OCCURRENCE AND POTENTIAL SOURCES OF Cd, Cu, AND Pb IN REACH 6 OF THE SANTA ANA RIVERMamari, May 01 September 2019 (has links)
The Santa Ana River (SAR) is the largest river in Southern California. The flow of the SAR begins in the San Bernardino Mountains and discharges into the Pacific Ocean at Huntington Beach. The SAR contains one of the most essential and rare biodiversity hotspots on earth. In order to protect the wildlife, and suit population demands, the SAR must meet the Clean Water Act (CWA) regulations. The SAR Reach 6 is the uppermost segment of the river, and is currently listed under the CWA 303(d) List for impaired water due to contamination of cadmium, copper, and lead from an unknown source based on limited data provided in 1997 by the San Bernardino County Flood Control District (SBCFCD). This project focused on confirming the contemporary occurrence and identifying the potential source(s) of Cd, Cu, and Pb by comparing new water sample data with that of previous studies The analysis of previous data identified an interesting correlation between high water hardness and elevated lead levels. The new results from this study suggest that there continues to be a source of these metals in the upper parts of Reach 6 of the SAR. Moreover, the limited data obtained in this study suggests that the source of the contamination is upstream to the northeast of the primary sampling site, possibly on private lands. Future, more comprehensive studies will be required to determine whether Reach 6 of the SAR should remain on the 303(d) list. Source identification if necessary, will be a further challenge.

The Shrine of our Lady of Ephesus: A Study of the Personas of Mary as Lived ReligionAbraham, Heather 21 November 2008 (has links)
In Pure Lust, Mary Daly claims that the Virgin Mary is an “image of total subservience, the dethroned and sapped Goddess who was converted into a vessel.” Daly perceives Mary primarily through Christian scripture and other orthodox texts, ignoring her role as part of a religion lived and experienced outside of Church doctrine and dogma. This thesis explores how Mary is perceived and utilized by the laity, as opposed to the theological Mary, by specifically looking at how the Virgin Mary is imagined and experienced at the Our Lady of Ephesus Shrine in Western Turkey. Utilizing Robert Orsi’s lived religion approach and ethnographic research, this examination of the Virgin Mary will test Daly’s theologically based theory.
