Entre textos e contextos: a poesia e a crônica de Ana Paula Tavares / Between texts and contexts: the poetry and the chronicle of Ana Paula Tavares

Rabello, Rosana Baú 11 June 2019 (has links)
This thesis conducts the critical reading of the poetry and the chronicles of Ana Paula Tavares using the relations between literature and history as a starting point, with a particular focus on the Angolan author\'s expressive response to women\'s points of view and voices situated in social, historical, and cultural contexts. In the chronicles and poems analyzed these articulation points with history reveal themselves by the way symbols of culture, life, sexuality, maternity, resistance, and challenges imposed to women through the matrix of male domination, wars, and social crisis are coded in poetic language from the organizing view of an author-creator inscribed in her own texts. The trajectory of this gaze that is drawn in the author\'s work and that reflects itself in the way that women\'s voices are expressed was traced by the close reading of the books of poems Ritos de Passagem, O lago da lua, Dizes-me coisas amargas como frutos and Ex-votos, as well as the chronicles published in A cabeça de Salomé.

El Salvador : modern technology and poverty

Pike, Elizabeth G. January 2007 (has links)
The school, Centro Escolar Dr. Manuel Parada Salgaco, in Santa Ana, El Salvador, has been given a second chance. The Organization of Developing States funded a Solar Panel Net Project for the school, allotting it 36 solar panels to power 10 computers and a high-speed satellite Internet connection on the school campus. I became curious to learn, through documented interviews, how much this computer lab has contributed to the education of the poor, rural children. In this particular situation it appears that no longer are the developed world and the developing world separated due to lack of access to information. This exploration of computer and media use in impoverished areas explain and examine how the Internet and media are having positive effects on the students and teachers. This technology has opened the student's eyes to higher aspirations for themselves, as well as furthering their education. This documentary hopefully will be used as a tool to gain more funds, grants and volunteers to help the children select another type of life than just poverty. The principal, four students, four teachers, as well as Peace Corps volunteers, were interviewed. All interviews were documented on videotape. It was clear after this process that access to Internet technology does have positive effects on young students. And although the documentary does not suggest too many negatives, I cover those in this paper. I also hope the documentary can be used to help the school and future schools become as fortunate. / Department of Telecommunications

Are we all ugly ducklings when we look in the mirror? : misunderstandings and new interpretations : a discursive analysis of the idealized body within pro-anorexia websites

Steeves, Megan 12 April 2010
This research explores the controversial nature of the pro-anorexia (pro-ana) websites. While previous studies have been conducted on the nature of these websites, it is essential to uncover the motivating factors behind maintaining a pro-ana identity. The purpose of my research is two-fold; a) uncover the definition of the idealized female body within the pro-ana websites, drawing connections between the idealized female body as conceptualized within our current society, and within the pro-ana websites; b) to demonstrate the core values held by pro-ana users that enable them to pursue their goal of achieving the idealized female body.
The theoretical framework for this thesis is based upon the work of feminist scholar Susan Bordo. Specifically, her analysis of the idealized female body within Western culture acted as the lens through which pro-ana websites were examined. A five step critical discourse analysis approach put forth by Norman Fairclough was implemented to guide the research and data analysis. Textual data was collected from three different pro-ana websites over the period of one week. In addition to discourse analysis, a brief content analysis was used to distinguish the common themes of posting topics.
From the results of the content analysis, the definition of the idealized female body according to the pro-ana users was created. In addition, the three underlying values held by pro-ana users during their pursuit of the idealized body -- discipline, self-surveillance and drive emerged from the data collection and analysis. It is important to distinguish that an underlying need to maintain constant control is present.
As the existing literature on this topic is still undergoing development, the results of this study offer key insights into the underlying motivations of those users found within pro-ana websites. It is clear that further research is needed in order to distinguish new and desperately needed approaches to treating eating disorders as they are only becoming more prevalent within society.

Learned, Amber M 22 December 2008
This thesis seeks to investigate the erotic components of three Central American writers, Ana Istarú, Dina Posada and Jacinta Escudos from a postmodernist feminist perspective. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the importance and the development of the topic within the confines of the work of each of the three writers.
The first chapter defines eroticism from a feminist perspective. After, this chapter differentiates between eroticism written by women and that written by men. In order to better understand eroticism we look at how relationships between men and women are changing, not only because of the impetus of women, but also that of men. The theories of Anais Nin and Helene Cixous are presented and these discuss the importance of eroticism in literature written by women. Finally, the textual analysis, as proposed by López Casanova, is laid out for use.
Chapters two, three and four examine the work of each of the authors. In the first section of each chapter a textual analysis is done of selected poems and also of the narrative work. After, the topic of eroticism is discussed in the context of each of the works and then how this is linked to the feminist movement.
The thesis concludes with what these works of eroticism mean to the feminist movement, specifically in the Central American context, as well as a wider context. The contribution of each writer is recognized, even though it may be small and also that it may be difficult to connect the writing to specific, concrete changes in Central American society. This thesis seeks to prove that the primary outcome of these works is to see the hope and the possibilities that they may to lead us towards.

Beyond Self: Strategic Essentialism in Ana Mendieta's "La Maja de Yerba"

Hudson, Michelle L 13 May 2011 (has links)
Artist Ana Mendieta frequently conjoined the female body with nature to express her search for personal identity and support for feminist topics. Her last intended and least scholarly examined work, La Maja de Yerba (Grass Goddess), continues specific visual and thematic elements of her previous Silueta Series (Silhouette) yet also presents an aesthetically unique creation. Despite its incompletion as a result of her premature death, the preserved maquette directly stipulates a female form to be planted in grass on the Bard College campus grounds. This alignment of women and nature garners criticism for its reliance on universalism and categorizations of women’s experiences; however, Mendieta’s use of essentialism in public art contributes to circulating feminist discourse to a wider audience. This paper considers the artistic influences, thematic concepts, and employment of strategic essentialism in Mendieta’s La Maja de Yerba.
