Evaluation Of Seismic Response Modification Factors For Steel Frames By Non-linear Analysis

Bakir, Serhan 01 November 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In this study steel framing systems are investigated with regards to their lateral load carrying capacity and in this context seismic response modification factors of individual systems are analyzed. Numerous load resisting layouts, such as different bracing systems and un-braced moment resisting frames with various bay and story configurations are designed and evaluated in a parametric fashion. Three types of beam to column connection conditions are incorporated in evaluation process. Frames, designed according to Turkish seismic code, are investigated by nonlinear static analysis with the guidance of previous studies and recent provisions of FEMA. Method of analysis, design and evaluation data are presented in detail. Previous studies in literature, history and the theory of response modification phenomenon is presented. Results are summarized, main weaknesses and ambiguities introduced to design by the use of &ldquo / R&rdquo / factors are stated depending on the observed behavior.

Performance Evaluation And Cfd Analysis Of A Positive Displacement Diaphragm Pump

Gokce, Gokay 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In order to understand flow characteristics inside a positive displacement pump, every point in the flow field must be carefully observed. Such observations are difficult, expensive and usually time consuming to achieve with physical testing. During tests one can observe flow characteristics only at the locations where the instrument device is attached, not the whole flow domain. This thesis mainly focuses on the evaluation of design and performance characteristics of a positive displacement triplex diaphragm pump. For this purpose not only numerical investigations but also experimental studies were conducted using a positive displacement pump which is supplied by the pump manufacturer and is available in the fluid mechanics laboratory of Middle East Technical University. The effect of valve characteristics on the pump efficiency such as valve spring stiffness, valve displacement, mass of the check valves, and diaphragm shape are investigated in this thesis by using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique. The pump performance is analyzed in terms of its volumetric and hydraulic efficiencies. The effect of the valve closure delay is also discussed. After the CFD and experimental results of the current pump model are compared and it is seen that they are in close agreement with each other, parametric studies are performed in computer environment. From analysis results it is observed that using stiffer springs reduces valve closing time and tend to decrease flow reversal effects. Secondly, using heavier check valves increases valve closing and opening times and also increases the stresses on the components of the pump with the increased pressure drop through discharge valve. As a result of this condition, hydraulic and volumetric efficiency reduce. Thirdly, with the longer valve displacement arrangement, more time is required for opening and closing of the check valves therefore efficiency of the pump reduces.

New Approaches For Performance Evaluation Using Data Envelopment Analysis

Ozpeynirci, Nail Ozgur 01 June 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) assigns efficiency values to decision making units (DMU) in a given period by comparing the outputs with the inputs. In many applications, inputs and outputs of DMUs are monitored over time. There might be a time lag between the consumption of inputs and production of outputs. We develop approaches that aim to capture the time lag between the outputs and the inputs in assigning the efficiency values to DMUs. We present computational results on randomly generated problems as well as on an application to R&amp / D institutes of the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (T&Uuml / BiTAK).

Evaluation Of Pushover Analysis Procedures For Frame Structures

Oguz, Sermin 01 May 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Pushover analysis involves certain approximations and simplifications that some amount of variation is always expected to exist in seismic demand prediction of pushover analysis. In literature, some improved pushover procedures have been proposed to overcome the certain limitations of traditional pushover procedures. The effects and the accuracy of invariant lateral load patterns utilised in pushover analysis to predict the behavior imposed on the structure due to randomly selected individual ground motions causing elastic and various levels of nonlinear response were evaluated in this study. For this purpose, pushover analyses using various invariant lateral load patterns and Modal Pushover Analysis were performed on reinforced concrete and steel moment resisting frames covering a broad range of fundamental periods. Certain response parameters predicted by each pushover procedure were compared with the &#039 / exact&#039 / results obtained from nonlinear dynamic analysis. The primary observations from the study showed that the accuracy of the pushover results depends strongly on the load path, properties of the structure and the characteristics of the ground motion. Pushover analyses were performed by both DRAIN-2DX and SAP2000. Similar pushover results were obtained from the two different softwares employed in the study provided that similar approach is used in modeling the nonlinear properties of members as well as their structural features. The accuracy of approximate procedures utilised to estimate target displacement was also studied on frame structures. The accuracy of the predictions was observed to depend on the approximations involved in the theory of the procedures, structural properties and ground motion characteristics.

No. of bitstreams: 1 AlexandreGoncalves.pdf: 7347834 bytes, checksum: d0b51a742fc771e86b33c09b0e36245b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-03-28 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work aims to shed an analytical-interpretative look on the 3 Sonatas for Piano by José Penalva (1924-2002), wh re the analytical processes serve as a complement to instrumental performance. It was a historical and bibliographical survey on the composer, placing him within Brazilian and world music scene. This survey helped to highlight compositional characteristics of José Penalva, present in the three sonatas. Considering the idiomatic diversity of the sonatas each one in different musical language we used the set theory, or Pitch-Class Analysis, as an analytical tool and also some concepts of Schenkerian Analysis, in addition to the traditional thematic and motivic analysis. The entire analytical process, since its foundation till the final writing analysis was converged, making the relation analysis-performance complementary and productive to instrumental performance. The result of this union and complementation is present in the interpretative proposals and instrumental performance suggested in the body text, and applied directly to the works, recorded on audio CD attached on this work / Este trabalho propõe-se a lançar um olhar analítico-interpretativo sobre as 3 Sonatas para Piano de José Penalva (1924-2002), onde os processos analíticos servem como complemento à performance instrumental.

NEWLY-COMMISSIONED WORKS FOR FLUTE AND ORGAN BY FIVE PROMINENT AMERICAN COMPOSERS: AN ANALYSIS AND PERFORMANCE GUIDE

Meyer, Anna K January 2020 (has links)
In an effort to proliferate the awareness of and interest in flute and organ chamber music, I have commissioned five new works for flute and organ. An analysis and performance guide of these works will provide the basis for the discussion in this monograph. Through a survey of various sources, I hope to prove the need for more flute and organ chamber works as well as introduce the five new pieces into the mainstream repertoire. I begin with a discussion of the organ/flute duo and briefly touch on the small number of existing works widely recognized in both the flute and organ communities. I use several instrument-specific catalogues of repertoire to compare which pieces are common in both the flute and the organ communities as well as how they are catalogued. Using modern scholarship surrounding the rapidly growing performance-studies discipline, I hope to show that a performance guide of these new works can be of great significance to the performers. Once I have established a need for more repertoire for this unique paring, I introduce and discuss at length each individual piece, providing a formal analysis and suggestions to the performer on how best to approach these pieces based on this analysis. I provide an abridged version of the performance guide for each piece as an appendix. Finally, I compare the five new compositions to the existing handful briefly mentioned in the introduction and strive to use the opinions of other professionals in the field to prove not only the validity of the works in themselves, but their viability as upstanding compositions in the mainstream repertoire. / Music Performance

Esporte e ansiedade pré-competitiva: uma análise dos parâmetros psicofisiológicos e sua relação com o desempenho esportivo em atletas profissionais de futsal / Sport and Anxiety pre-competition: an analysis of psychophysiological parameters and your relationship with performance in professional athletes of futsal

Paludo, Ana Carolina 23 September 2016 (has links)
The pre-competitive state anxiety and it´s possible relationship with the sport performance has become a focus of investigation for many researchers, especially in sport psychology. However in the sport futsal, this relationship is still inconclusive. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between pre-competitive anxiety and performance of professional athletes of futsal during the playoffs of a championship. Furthermore, in this study the possible influence of the phase and game condition on the anxiety and performance responses was analyzed, additionally, the Catastrophe Theory was used to see the interaction amongst cognitive anxiety, arousal and performance responses. To develop this study, 16 male professional futsal athletes were analyzed, belonging to an elite club of São Paulo, Brazil. The study was conducted throughout the playoffs of an important championship on high level for the team. The samples were collected in home and away venue in phases of quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. The data were collected about 15 to 30 minutes before the warm-up in each game, in which the anxiety by CSAI-2R and the physiological arousal by HRV were evaluated. Performance was analyzed subjectively (Likert Scale questionnaire) and objectively (match analysis). The used statistics treatments were: the ANOVA 2x3 for analyzing the influence of phase and game condition; the Pearson\'s correlation for testing the correlation among the variables (state anxiety, physiological arousal and performance) and for the Catastrophe Theory followed specific statistical tests. For all analyzes the alpha was set on 5%. Among the main results we identified a significant influence of the phase of competition for the pre-competitive physiological arousal and the subjective performance. Significant correlations were found among the variables, however, the majority of them was classified as \"moderate\". The Catastrophe Theory presented a positive application on the interaction among anxiety, physiological arousal by HRV indices and performance. Concerning the findings, we can conclude that the pre-competitive state of anxiety and the performance showed a negative relationship in futsal athletes. This relationship can be observed in the Catastrophe Theory, when under high levels of cognitive anxiety, decrease their performance as a function of the increase of physiological arousal. Beyond that, we can conclude that the phase of the game can influence the athlete\'s behavior. When the phase of championship increases, the athletes show a higher level of physical arousal, plus the great subjective performance
