At the Edge of the Urban and Peripheral Landscapes in the French Realm (1670-1789)

Iturbe-Kennedy, Agueda 09 December 2017 (has links)
Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the pacification of French interior territories and the stabilization of their frontiers brought the intellectual elite and the local and royal administrations to question the necessity of city walls within the kingdom. The city of Paris razed its ramparts in the 1670's, initiating mutations in the urban landscape that will spread throughout the French territories. By opening their cities, architects and engineers will thus be confronted to a new architectural and urban problem: there is no longer a functional need for a city gate to limit the access, but the symbolic load of city gates as landmarks to which citizen are deeply attached remains.

O símbolo indumentário: distinção e prestígio no Rio de Janeiro (1808-1821) / The fashion symbol: distinction and prestige in Rio de Janeiro (1808-1821)

Due to the transfer of Portuguese Court to Rio de Janeiro it was established relations of interpenetration between the elite of grosso trato dealers from Rio de Janeiro and the newcomers portugueses elites. These relations are analyzed through fashion, because, besides the fact that it could express economic power, demarcated the place occupied by the person in the social hierarchy, as well as the social group that he belonged to, because there were uniforms, which could be used only by who occupied some public posts, and insignias of Militaries Orders, which were given by the king through the mercês régias. Therefore, through fashion, its possible to see how these dealers searched get into the Ancient Regime logical, trough symbols of prestige and distinction

Mézin-Bourgninaud, Véronique 04 June 2016 (has links)
The executive staff of colonial governors under royal period comprises governors-general and individuals who rule the French colonies from 1763 to 1792 by appointment of the crown. The governor is a man of war, appointed by the King on the advice of the Navy Minister. It is for him to defend an Empire, to control local customs and to enforce royal laws. The importance of the position and the range of power that comes with it depend on local circumstances, not to mention the personality and the scale of the holder, his social ranking, and the combining of functions he can benefit from. If being the ruler of the colony, being part of the administrative elite and representing the King suggest both a prestigious and exotic job, reality is less rosy. The governor's authority has to face numerous obstacles, which results in the weakening of the effective ruling of the country. The governor tries to assert power over other distinctive markers, however the office remains unenviable, as it implies squalor and constant travel and is plagued by distrust of local elites or other metropolitan administrators. The financial perks and the promise of a more prestigious position after serving as Colonial governor are increasingly unrealistic as the French Revolution approaches. The office of Colonial governor, one of several steps in a colonial career, is actually isolated from the power and influence which rule the court, atypical in its appointment and provides very few career opportunities.

La cour et les animaux sous les Bourbons / Animals and the court under the Bourbons

Pieragnoli, Joan 05 December 2015 (has links)
This study does not focus in on animals as much as it questions the way they have been used by men and the part they played in the development of court life. In the first part, I address the relation between man and animal in the court context, from the standpoint of the architectural forms, administrative structures as well as the social and legal framework, in which the relation blossomed during the transition of 16th to the 17th century (chapter I to III). Chapter IV deals with yet another aspect of the man-animal relation, describing the use of the latter for alimentary purposes. The second part questions the animals’ participation in the court dynamics, at a point when, beginning with Louis XIII’s reign, courtization accelerated. My first concern was to give a detailed account of the animal’s role in the conception of the cultural models conveyed by propaganda and sponsorship originating from princes (chapter V and chapter VI). On the internal level, chapter VII and VIII describe the way the development of hunting crews and the codification of royal hunts participate in courtization. In the third part, I examine the impact of the court’s settlement on animal populations and the development of zoological architecture. Chapter IX describes the Ménagerie of Versailles, while the next one addresses the joint process of institutionalization of scientific patronage. Finally, in chapter XI and XII, I argue that the selective distribution of animals depending on the court residencies had an impact on spatial organization.

Lourenço, Luis Augusto Bustamante 04 May 2007 (has links)
This paper aims to understand the transition occurred in Triângulo Mineiro´s territory, Minas Gerais, in the last four decades of 19th century, from an economy and society based on inherited structures of the Ancient Regime to the capitalism. This research proposes that the transition from a production method to another corresponds to structural changes in the territorial shape, landscape, networks, and techniques, which led to a new socio-spatial formation. All the changes were analyzed considering the regional arrangements and the urban network. Also the land structure, specially concerning the land distribution and mercantile process, the slavery status to free work, the transformations undergone in the technical systems and in the urban space dynamic were all considered. Post mortem estates, censuses, maps and collected material in fieldworks, as well as a vast literature were used as study sources. This paper was written from the regional geography and the historical geography perspectives.
