Influência da paisagem na dieta de Bothrops atrox na Amazônia oriental / Landscape influence on Bothrops atrox diet in the eastern AmazonMelissa Gaste Martinez 04 December 2015 (has links)
In Brazil, 90% of 26,000 snakebites are caused by the genus Bothrops, and the Bothrops atrox the predominant species in the Brazilian Amazon. The region of Santarém (PA) is related to 92% of snake bites, of which 20% were considered severe. This high incidence may be related to floristic diversity of scenarios in the region, enabling the existence of an amplitude of this genus. By using the methodology of carbon stable isotope (13 C) and nitrogen (15N), it was found that the changes in eating habits and sources existing in different environments and land use in the Amazon, in this case, forest environments, savannah and pasture, influenced the isotopic composition of the collected tissues of B. atrox found in these environments. To catch the B. atrox and its potential prey, we used three methods of collection, as chance meeting, active surveillance and interception traps and falling (Pit fall traps). After capture, these snakes were kept in the vivarium of the FIT and tissue samples taken periodically. The tissues of B. atrox and their food sources were analyzed isotopically by mass spectrometry for ?13C and ?15N. The different food sources of B. atrox were isotopically different in the three environments as well as its incorporation into tissues analyzed. For B. atrox kept in a vivarium, as well as the vivarium food offered was obtained turnover of some tissues regardless of the environment in which they were originally collected. After some time in the vivarium, these animals now have the isotopic signal of the new offered food, and in some tissues, this change reflected quickly and others more slowly tissues. This study contributed to the knowledge of the ecology of the snake and its use environments, poorly reported and for understanding turnover in animal tissues

An in vivo electrochemical analysis of the role of dopamine in feeding behaviorsHolmes, Lorinda Jean January 1990 (has links)
The involvement of dopamine in anticipatory and consummatory aspects of feeding behaviors was investigated in the present thesis. All measurements of dopaminergic activity were taken by in vivo electrochemical techniques. In Experiment 1, dopamine efflux in the nucleus accumbens and caudate of male rats was monitored during sessions in which a small, unsignalled liquid meal was consumed. Increases in the electrochemical measure of dopamine activity, which were of similar temporal pattern and magnitude, were observed in both the nucleus accumbens and striatum following meal consumption. These data suggest a possible postingestional role of dopamine in these two brain structures. In Experiment 2, a conditioned feeding paradigm was utilized to study the role of dopamine during a discrete anticipatory phase of feeding. Rats were conditioned to discriminate between a positive conditioned stimulus (CS+) predictive of meal delivery, and a negative conditioned stimulus (CS-) that was not associated with food. Increases in dopamine activity, as determined by changes in electrochemical oxidation currents, were found to be greater during the CS+ than during the CS- in both the nucleus accumbens and caudate. In addition, the magnitude of increase was greater in the nucleus accumbens than the caudate, suggesting that the accumbens may be preferentially involved in the processing of external incentive stimuli. The results support a role for dopamine in both the nucleus accumbens and caudate during appetitive or anticipatory responding for food in the male rat. / Medicine, Faculty of / Graduate

Spurenelementversorgung bei MilchrindernSteinhöfel, Olaf, Fröhlich, Brigitte, Zentek, Jürgen, Kriesten, Anett, Männer, Klaus 02 October 2013 (has links)

A Holistic Approach to Animal Farming: Integrating Bioregionalism and Socialist Ecofeminism Within the Context of Concentrated Animal Feeding OperationsSpears, Sarah R 01 January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
This paper addresses the harmful effects of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) within animal farming systems, including poor animal welfare, environmental damage, and environmental injustice. I argue that bioregionalism and socialist ecofeminism can help inform a holistic approach to mitigating these harms and evoke ethical and sustainable animal farming systems. Bioregionalism emphasizes local resource use, community engagement, and ecological knowledge within a specific region, while socialist ecofeminism critiques oppressive systems and seeks to uplift the viewpoints of all beings, including animals, nature, and humans of various identities. Through a scaffolded hypothetical case study informed by the CAFOs-practicing hog farms in the coastal plain of North Carolina, I examine the potential benefits and limitations of a solely bioregional animal farming system followed by the potential benefits and limitations of a solely socialist ecofeminist animal farming system. I then combine the two theories to explore how they complement one another. I conclude that an ecologically informed structure advocated by bioregionalism functioning together with the moral values of socialist ecofeminism creates the possibility for ethical and sustainable animal farming systems.

Productivity of four fodder tree species, their nutritional value and potential role in ruminant production in Eastern BotswanaWalker, Keitirele Patricia 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Forest and Wood Science))—University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / Sustainable livestock production in semi-arid Botswana could be improved through tree planting on-farm to provide much needed protein and shade. Such action can be encouraged if the growth, productivity, nutritional value of trees and their contribution to mass gain of livestock are known.. A study at Malotwana investigated two indigenous species, Acacia galpinii and Faidherbia albida, and two exotic species, Leucaena diversifolia and L. leucocephala, at three spacings in a randomised complete block design replicated five times. The three spacings represented 400, 317 and 241 trees per hectare. The study was conducted over 6.5 years. Indigenous trees were sampled biennially and exotics annually to evaluate crown width, height, stem diameter, stem number and stem volume index. Complete plant harvesting of exotic trees at 2.5, 4.5 and 6.5 years evaluated agroforestry production. Leaves from all four species and pods of exotic species were analysed for chemical composition. Two groups of eight lambs were balanced for mass at selection for an on-farm feeding trial. Browse from exotic trees, comprising a 2:1 ratio of pods to leaves, was fed at 30% as supplement to hay to one group whose mean mass was contrasted with that of the control group fed sorghum bran at 30%.
A. galpinii was a promising species, adaptable to planting away from its origin. Its crown width ranged from 5.86 m in high density plots to 6.08 m at low density and was significantly different among stands (p = 0.0406) at 6.5 years. Diameter at breast height (dbh) was significantly different among stands aged 6.5 years (p = 0.0003) and ranged between 10.38 cm at high density to 12.48 cm in low density plots, demonstrating a capacity to provide both shade and poles on-farm. At 4.5 years, F. albida attained a mean height of 4.5 m and 4.5 cm in dbh but suffered 67% mortality during a severe drought.
Annual fodder production of 0.647 and 0.996 metric tonnes ha-1 for leaves and pods of L. diversifolia and 1.237 and 1.431 for L. leucocephala was recorded in years of average rainfall. Yields of 0.3 and 0.59 metric tonnes ha-1 were recorded for both species in the driest year. Equally good agroforestry production was obtained from both low and high density stands suggesting that low density plantings, which foster higher plant survival and reduce disease incidence, are best suited to the semi-arid conditions of Botswana. The crude protein of leaves ranged between 16.26 (L. diversifolia) and 25.25% (F. albida). They were highly digestible with more than twice the calcium content livestock require. Crude protein and digestibility measures were significantly different among leaves and varied significantly at different spacings (p<0.0001). Pods of the exotic species contained significantly more protein than the leaves (p<0.0001).
Lambs supplemented with browse gained 102.33 g per animal per day while the control group gained 83.95 g. There were significant differences between groups during growth (p<0.05).
Growing of A. galpinii, complemented with L. diversifolia and L. leucocephala, can supply short and long term feed, and greatly enhance livestock production while diversifying farm feed sources

Carry-over of additives and/or medicated products is a common issue in feed industry and, by extension in most of powder handling industries. Currently carry-over rate of a production line can be accurately defined but the causes are not identified yet. It can be broken into 2 phases : firstly, particle deposit during one batch processing and then, their collecting during the following batches. Experimental studies, carried out on industrial sites or on test benches, charged the bucket elevator situated just after the mixer to be responsible for a significant increase of cross contamination rate of industrial feed production lines. Therefore this work focuses on this handling device. It transfers mixing of several raw materials in powdery forms, which may contain micro-ingredients, especially additives or medicated products. The aim of this study is to understand how process operations affect cross contamination rates during bucket elevator handling. A test bench of this handling device, a reference product and laboratory methods have been setup. Moreover, an experimental fractional factorial design highlights the effects of several process parameters : on one hand the discharge phase on elevator head (linked to belt velocity) and the discharge spout angle act on microingredients deposit mass. On the other hand, spacing between buckets and the leg’s inner surface influences micro-ingredients collected mass. Furthermore, ideal position of process parameters has been defined. By this way, cross contamination rate on the test bench has been decreased from 9 to 7 percent. Finally, velocity fields observations during the discharge phase leads to better understanding of how these process parameters influence cross contamination rate.

Processamento de grãos de milho flint e sua substituição por polpa cítrica em dietas para tourinhos Nelore terminados em confinamento / Flint corn grain processing and increasing levels of citrus pulp in finishing diets for Nellore bulls.Gouvêa, Vinícius Nunes de 18 June 2012 (has links)
The effects of flint corn processing (steam flaking, 310 g/l vs. gridding, 1.3 mm GMD) and the partial replacement of corn with citrus pulp (0, 25, 50 or 75%) in feedlot diets were evaluated. A total of 216 Nellore bulls (IBW 350 kg) were allotted to 40 pens and used in a randomized complete block design with a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement of treatments (SF100:CP0; SF75:CP25; SF50:CP50; SF25:CP75; GC100:CP0; GC75:CP25; GC50:CP50; GC25:CP75) for 103-d. The diets contained (% DM) 12% sugar cane bagasse and 88% concentrate. Data was analyzed using mixed procedure of SAS with pens as experimental units. For DMI, ADG, G/F and observed NEg the effects of grain processing, the effects of citrus pulp inclusion in the diets and interactions were significant (P < 0.01). All the diets containing SFC presented less DMI than the GC75:CP25 and the GC50:CP50 diets. Citrus pulp had no effect on DMI of the SFC diets, however it increased DMI when it replaced up to 50% of the GC. Inclusion of CP decreased ADG in the SFC diets (1.80; 1.52; 1.70; 1.58 kg.head-1 and it increased ADG in the GC diets (1.60; 1.74; 1.85; 1.70 kg.head- 1. The greatest G/F was observed for Nellore cattle fed the SF100:CP0 diet followed by the SF50:CP50 diet. Inclusion of citrus pulp decreased G/F of cattle fed SFC (0.222; 0.190; 0.200; 0.184) and had no effect for cattle fed GC diets (0.180; 0.176; 0.180; 0.186). Diet NEg was greater for SFC diets (1.73; 1.51; 1.56; 1.45 Mcal kg.DM-1 than for GC diets (1.42; 1.37; 1.39; 1.44 Mcal kg.DM-1, with a negative effect of CP in the SFC diets. Fat thickness was greater for GC than for SFC diets (4.4 mm vs. 5.0 mm). When CP replaced up to 50% of corn in the diets fecal starch was less for SFC diets than for GC diets (2.0% vs. 9.3%). In conclusion, SFC increases diet NEg for Nellore cattle fed high concentrate diets compared to ground corn. Citrus pulp decreases NEg in SFC diets and has no negative effects on ground corn diets NEg for Nellore cattle.

Desempenho, características da carcaça, perfil de ácidos graxos e parâmetros ruminais de ovinos alimentados com rações contendo polpa cítrica úmida semi despectinada e/ou polpa cítrica desidratada / Performance, carcass characteristics, fatty acids profile and ruminal measures in sheep fed diets containing wet low pectin citrus pulp and/or dried citrus pulpRodrigues, Gustavo Henrique 28 September 2009 (has links)
The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance, fatty acids (FA) profile and ruminal measures of sheep fed citrus coproducts in diets containing high concentrate. Additionally, the performance and metabolic estimates from SRNS model - Small Ruminant Nutrition System were compared to experimental data. In Experiment I, 28 ewes were fed diet containing 55% of corn. Dried citrus pulp (DCP) was added at 18.1, 36.8 and 55% (diet DM) replacing corn by 33, 67 and 100%, respectively. There was a linear decrease (P<0.02) in dry matter intake (DMI) with DCP inclusion, however, there was no effect on milk production. Milk composition, was not affected by DCP inclusion, except for urea that showed a linear (P<0.01) decrease. Milk FA increased linearly for C15:0, C16:0, C17:1, C18:3, medium-chain and saturated FA and decreased linearly for C18:0, C18:1, C18:2 t10,c12, monounsaturated and long-chain FA when DCP replaced corn. There was a 47% increase for C18:2 c9,t11 when DCP replaced corn by 33%. In Experiment II, 32 Santa Ines lambs were fed a 90% concentrate. DCP was added at 23.7, 46.1 and 68.4% (on a DM basis) replacing corn by 33, 67 and 100%, respectively. Total replacement of corn by DCP promoted an increase (P<0.03) by 177% in linolenic acid (C18:3) while a partial replacement showed an increase (P<0.02) by 72% in conjugated linoleic acid (C18:2 c9,t11). In addition, ether extract decrease (P=0.02) as DCP increased in the diet. In Experiment III, 64 lambs were fed diets containing 69.5% DCP. A portion (30%) of DCP on a DM basis was replaced by wet low pectin citrus pulp (WLPCP), wet low pectin citrus pulp silage (WLPCPS) or wet low pectin citrus pulp silage with sodium benzoate (WLPCPS+B). There were no differences in DMI and average daily gain (ADG). However, feed efficiency was greater for lambs fed WLPCP compared to lambs fed DCP. In the digestibility trial, 16 lambs, canulated in the rumen, were fed diets containing 75.3% DCP. A portion (30%) of the DCP was replaced by WLPCP, WLPCPS or WLPCPS+B. There was no difference (P>0.05) in dry matter, organic matter and crude protein apparent digestibilities, except for neutral detergent fiber digestibility (82.7 vs 73.3% for WLPCP and DCP, respectively).
