Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a disease caused by Leishmania infantum and transmitted by the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis, is considered a public health problem in Brazil. The study aimed to carry out an epidemiological study on the occurrence of VL in dogs and cats, and sand flies during the period of one year in two animal shelters from Ilha Solteira, SP. A total of 197 and 192 biological material samples were collected, respectively from cats and dogs for serological survey by an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) for both species of animals, and the intradermal reaction of Montenegro (only for dogs). During the study with dogs, 17,2% (33/192) were serologically positive for LV by ELISA, 19,8% (38/192) by IFAT and 45,4% (15/33) by the intradermal method. The correlation analysis between the serological techniques was ranged from reasonable to good for dogs, but was bad when compared to the Montenegro reaction. The feline seroprevalence was 32,4% (64/197) and 31,9% (63/197) for ELISA and IFAT, respectively. Although the most of dogs and cats in shelters were infected, six dogs and five cats infected inside the shelters. A total of 131 sand flies were captured by the light traps in both shelters, during two years. The risk factors, statistically determined by univariate analysis (p ≤ 0.05), demonstrated that the small size of the dogs, the use of deltamethrin collar and the precocious diagnosis, significantly influenced the animals positivity for VL. It was concluded that these animal shelters were vulnerable to this parasitic infection because of the presence of sand flies and positive animals for LV. / FAPESP: 2014/12609-2

"You Can See it in Their Eyes:" A Communication Ethnography of a Humane Society

Kaufman, Sara Victoria 01 January 2011 (has links)
This study sought to understand the culture-sharing group of people working within the shelter area of a Pacific Northwest animal shelter through the Ethnography of Communication. About 63% of households in the United States live with a companion animal (Risley-Curtis et al., 2006). Recently, there has been a shift toward closer examination into the ways in which humans interact with animals, particularly companion animals. The guiding questions of this study were: RQ1: What are the cultural communication forms performed in the context of the humane society? RQ2: How do shelter workers communicate about companion animals? RQ3: What cultural meanings are instantiated through communication in this context? This qualitative research approach included 40 hours of participant observation, individual interviews and an analysis of a set of documents and artifacts. Utilizing the Ethnography of Communication components, thematic and pattern analysis, findings revealed use of three main communication forms within the shelter: verbal, written and nonverbal communication and the overarching key theme of relational bonding occurring within an animal-centric organization among 4 relational categories: A. Shelter animals and shelter animals, B. Shelter animals and shelter workers, C. Shelter workers and shelter workers and D. Shelter workers and the public. Processes leading to relational bonding are delineated including detailed speech as well as aspects of "broken bonds" and euthanasia and it's effects within a "no-kill" organization.

Innovative policies to manage demand in service systems with limited capacity

Phumchusri, Naragain 10 November 2010 (has links)
This dissertation presents innovative demand management techniques for service systems with limited resources. The first study analyzes demand management policies of animal shelters with limited Kennel space as a set of interacting stochastic queueing systems. In practice, there are two main policies being used, which we call "Kill" and "No-Kill" policies. In a "Kill" system, animals may be euthanized if a shelter is full. Many shelters have moved to a "No-Kill" policy, where they avoid killing for space and adopt other approaches to reduce supply and demand mismatch. Our goal is to provide insights on how No-Kill policies, such as coordination, adoption and neutering campaigns, help reduce the animals' killing rate so that the shelter management can choose the way to effectively solve their problems. In the second part, we consider a topic of demand management for the Sports and Entertainment (S&E) industry, called "Scaling the house", i.e., how to divide seats into zones for different prices to maximize revenue across the venue. From the data obtained from several performance venues in the U.S., we find ticket demand is impacted by locations of seats as well as by price. We characterize closed-form solutions for the optimal two-dimensional zoning decision (with row and column cuts) and the one-dimensional decision (with row cuts), and explore when each model should be applied. The third study considers pricing as a tool to manage demand for the S&E tickets. We develop dynamic pricing with demand learning models where demand is also affected by time left until the show dates. Since the show's popularity is usually uncertain to the seller, we propose a method to learn the overall popularity via Bayesian updates. We perform computational experiments to understand properties of the model solutions and identify when demand learning is most beneficial.
