Globalização, gurôbarizêshon, globalización, mondialisation: fluxos econômicos e culturais globais varrem as nações do mundo contemporâneo afligindo a todos. Para muitos, um ícone do apagamento das fronteiras mundiais e o vislumbre de ilimitadas possibilidades dentre as quais a ascensão econômica e social parece sempre a mais celebrada. Para outros tantos, uma chance a mais de perpetuação das forças hegemônicas, de perturbação do conhecimento local; uma fonte de conflitos étnicos e religiosos bem como do agravamento das desigualdades sociais. Para a maioria, a certeza da inconstância e das freqüentes alterações não apenas dos mercados financeiros, mas também das relações humanas cada vez mais mediadas pela língua inglesa - a língua da vila global. Amparado por teorias da área da Aquisição de Segunda Língua (ASL), o presente estudo discute a expansão do inglês no âmbito internacional e as implicações de tal difusão nas instâncias global e local ao mesmo tempo em que analisa questões identitárias referentes ao ensino de inglês como língua estrangeira (LE) no Brasil. Para tanto, a autora lança mão de dados gerados em meio aos alunos do primeiro ano do Ensino Médio de uma escola da rede estadual do Rio Grande do Sul. De posse desses dados, a autora confronta teorias triunfalistas da expansão da língua global e revela o investimento dos participantes na aquisição do inglês como LE ao mesmo tempo em que explora identidades e comunidades imaginadas sinalizadas pelos participantes no que respeita a cidadania global. A autora propõe o questionamento das práticas atuais de ensino da língua na intenção de promover a aprendizagem do inglês nas escolas públicas brasileiras. / Globalization, gurôbarizêshon, globalización, mondialisation: economic and cultural flows sweep present-day nations affecting everyone's lives. While for some globalization marks the dawn of a new era in human history featuring the collapse of frontiers and the strengthening of international relations around the world, for some others the phenomenon enhances the power of hegemonic forces. It doesn't matter in which side you are, if you make the case for or against it. It seems that globalization has come to stay and it brings all sorts of different economic, cultural and linguistic conflicts along with it. One of them refers to the English spread around the world as an international medium for communication - a lingua franca, a world language or simply the language of the global village. Inspired by Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theories, this study discusses the impact of globalization on language teaching in Brazil. In order to do so, the author examines data generated among participants regularly enrolled at the first year of a public high school on the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The author confronts triumphalist theories of the global English development and reveals learners' investment in what concerns the acquisition of the foreign language (FL). She also explores the relationships between the learners' imagined communities and the acquisition of the target language claiming for the reassessment of teaching practices in order to guarantee the right students have conquered to learn the language at the public schools.

Este trabalho procura investigar e interpretar alguns processos históricos marcantes do século passado e que possuem identidade própria e podem ser nomeados como capítulos. Tais capítulos constituem parte significativa da História do século XX e são responsáveis pela identidade histórica específica deste. Não se pretende aqui apresentar um trabalho baseado em fontes primárias nem defender novas e diferentes teses históricas. Esta é uma pesquisa centrada na análise bibliográfica que dialoga com sínteses e estudos monográficos sem uma preocupação maior do que a de elaborar instrumentos para o estudo introdutório da História do século XX. / This paper aims to investigate and interpret some striking historical processes of the last century, which have its own identity and can be named as chapters. These chapters constitute a significant part of the twentieth century history and they are responsible for its specific historical identity. We don´t intend to present an analysis centered on primary sources or defend new and different historical theses. This research is focused on literature review and dialogues with syntheses and monographic studies, so its main concern is to devise instruments for the introductory study of the history of the twentieth century.
