The animal at the scene of writing : narrative subjectivities of the Lebanese civil war

This thesis inquires into anti-humanist trends in Lebanese literature of the civil war and post-war period by examining the limit concept of the animal in three novelistic works: Beirut Nightmares [Kawābīs Bayrūt] (1976) by Ghādah Sammān, Yalo (2002) by Elias Khoury, and The Tiller of Waters [Ḥārith al-miyāh] (1998) by Hudá Barakāt. Marking a departure in previous critical work done on this body of literature, which has been dominated by trauma theory as an analytical framework, this thesis employs an innovative synthesis of narrative theory and affect theory to describe how the authors utilize narrative to humanize the war experience, thereby mitigating the effects of contingency and fragmentation on the narrative subject. After the collapse of the state, the human being is separated from its political form, leaving it perilously exposed to acts of violence. It may also, however, carry out aggressions on its fellow man with impunity. Both of these terrible aspects of man’s nature in wartime are understood conventionally as exposing a beast within man, since they radically undermine the precepts of moral value and self-sovereignty that constitute the pillars of humanism. Through acts of “composition” the first person narrators of these novels strive to insulate their affective core from participating in ambient currents of violence, which are viewed as a kind of contamination understood as “becoming-animal.” While implicating the subject in a participation that is other-than-human, these animal becomings are also, following Deleuze and Guttari, ways of attaining a new vitality and escaping the hierarchical symbolic power of logos. Use of this animal figure allows the authors to rethink the human in ways that does not assume a fixed humanist ontology. For Sammān, the animal represents a principle of vitality that allows her protagonist to overcome human sources of inertia, such as melancholic memories or ingrained habit, thereby preserving the authentic voice of the writerly self. For Khoury and Barakāt, the animal permits them to foreground the figure of the subaltern who stands in a minoritarian relation to logos. They also propose a post-humanist ethos of co-presence based on the affective subject’s receptivity and vulnerability; its capacity to both affect and be affected. / text

Arabic dystopias in the 21st century : A study on 21st century Arabic dystopian fiction through the analysis of four works of Arabic dystopian narrative

Dystopian fiction as intended in the Western literary tradition is a 20 th century phenomenon on the Arabic literary scene. This relatively new genre has been experiencing an uplift since the beginning of the 21st century and many works that have been defined dystopias have been published and translated into English in the last 10 – 15 years. In order to find out their main features, Claeys’s categorization of literary dystopias is applied and a thematic analysis is carried out on four Arabic dystopian works of narrative, written by authors from different parts of the Arabic world. The analysis shows that 21st century Arabic dystopias are political dystopias, with totalitarianism as their main variation. Rather than on society, their focus is on the individual, and more specifically on personal freedom. The totalitarian constraints are mainly caused by religious fundamentalism and bureaucratic procedures. Surveillance and control over population are implemented by means of religious precepts and bureaucratic constructions, together with, in some instances, control over language and technological devices. Political totalitarianism regardless of a specific political ideology is identified as main theme. The thesis suggests that a Western-based classification framework is only partially suitable for Arabic dystopian fiction of the 21st century and that further research, including but not limited to a specific classification theory for Arabic dystopian fiction, is necessary to properly investigate this new literary trend in Arabic literature.

Este estudo consiste numa análise da tradução do romance Tistifil Miril Strib, de Rachid Daif, proposta por nós, do árabe ao português brasileiro. Com base no trabalho de Antoine Berman, A Tradução e a Letra, ou o Albergue do Longínquo, selecionaram-se decisões tradutórias que demonstrassem o nosso esforço em realizar uma tradução que levasse em conta o objetivo ético do traduzir, acolhendo o Estrangeiro que reside no texto original. Com essa finalidade, analisou-se a ação de três tendências deformadoras próprias da tradução da prosa literária, que agem sobre os traços mais característicos desse romance; são elas: 1) o empobrecimento quantitativo; 2) a destruição ou a exotização das redes de linguagens vernaculares; e 3) o apagamento das superposições de línguas. Em seguida, avalia-se até que ponto se consegue evitar essas forças deformadoras que afastam a tradução de seu objetivo ético, uma vez que destroem a letra do texto, isto é, a sua forma, em favor da transmissão do sentido. Conclui-se que, embora o tradutor tenha consciência da atuação dessas tendências durante o processo tradutório, esse não consegue se libertar plenamente delas. No entanto, isso não o impede de encontrar soluções que possibilitem a manifestação das estranhezas e das particularidades do texto original na língua de chegada, obedecendo à ética da tradução / The purpose of this study is to analyze the translation, proposed by us, of the novel Tistifil Miril Strib by Rashid Al-Daif, from Arabic into Brazilian Portuguese. Based on the theory proposed by Antoine Berman in his work La traduction et la lettre, ou Lauberge du lointain, we selected some of our translation decisions so as to demonstrate the effort of performing a translation with the ethical goal of hosting the foreigner who inhabits the source text. In order to do so, we analyze the action of three deforming tendencies typical of translating literary prose, which affect the inherent character of this novel. They are as follow: 1) quantitative impoverishment; 2) the destruction of vernacular networks or their exoticization; and 3) the effacement of the superimposition of languages. Then, we consider how well we can neutralize these deforming forces, which keep the translation away from its ethical aim by destroying the text letter, its form, so as to keep the content transmission. To summarize, even though the translator is conscious of how these tendencies work during the translation process, he cannot free himself completely from these forces. However, this does not stop him from finding solutions that enable the manifestation of the strangeness and particularities of the source text, within the target language, according to the ethics of translation

O \'adab nas Mil e uma noites: a história do segundo dervixe / The \'adab in the Arabian Nights: the tale of the second dervish

Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar a utilização da noção de adab ( ), no \"Livro das Mil e Uma Noites\". Dividido em três capítulos, no primeiro deles tentamos recuperar, através de diferentes estudos dedicados ao tema, a evolução e a variedade de usos desse termo ao longo dos séculos. Essa abordagem visa, sobretudo, mostrar a dificuldade de fixar-se uma definição precisa para o termo, devido ao vasto corpus de adab e a variedade de assuntos que aborda. Num segundo momento, foi observada a presença do termo adab nas narrativas do chamado \"ramo sírio\" do Livro das Mil e Uma Noites. Essa observação teve como ponto de partida a advertência, contida em seu preâmbulo, de que suas histórias estariam \"plenas de adab. Tomando como referência os elementos associados ao termo neste preâmbulo fizemos um levantamento das formas de sua ocorrência e, em seguida, passamos a explorar de maneira mais detalhada sua função através da análise de uma narrativa em particular. Assim, encerramos o trabalho com a análise da história O segundo dervixe ( ), onde a presença desse termo é importante no desenvolvimento da trama. Dando destaque aos momentos da história onde o termo adab se faz presente, efetuou-se a sistematização e a análise de seus significados, enfatizando-se a representação feita por ela da figura do adb ( , o possuidor de adab). / This work aims to analyze the use of the concept of \'adab in the Arabic cycle of narratives known as \"Arabian Nights\". Divided into three chapters, the first of them try to recover, through different studies devoted to the subject, the evolution and variety of uses of the term throughout the centuries. This approach aims, mainly, to show the difficulty of a precise definition for the term, due to the vast corpus of \'adab and the variety of subjects it covers. Secondly, the presence of the word \'adab was observed in the narratives of the \"Syrian branch\" of the \"Book of the Thousand and One Nights\". This observation had as its starting point the warning contained in its preamble, that their stories were \"full of \'adab.\" Taking as reference the elements associated with the term in this preamble, we did a survey of the forms of their occurrence and then, we explore in more detail its function through the analysis of one specific narrative. Thus we closed the work with the analysis of the story \"The second dervish\", where the presence of this term is very important in the development of the plot. Highlighting the moments in history where the term \'adab is present, we performed the systematization and analysis of their meaning, emphasizing how it represents the figure of the \'adib (the possessor of \'adab).

A partir de algumas considerações sobre o humor e as narrativas jocosas na comunicação e na linguagem, esta pesquisa se concentra no estudo de um personagem folclórico misto de sábio e bobo largamente conhecido entre os falantes da língua árabe pelo nome Juha e de algumas anedotas por ele protagonizadas, pondo em foco as suas principais características e os temas relacionados: sociedade, política, miséria, entre outros; além de apontar a presença de algumas anedotas em diferentes livros, do século X ao XXI, inclusive numa coletânea editada por Mussa Kuraiem em São Paulo na década de 60 do século passado, o livro Giha, Hoja e Nasredin, que constitui o corpus desta dissertação. / Starting from some considerations about humor and playful narratives in communication and language, this research focuses on the study of a mix of wise and foolish folkloric character - widely known among the speakers of the Arabic language by the name Juha - and on some anecdotes played by him, bringing into focus their main characteristics and issues: society, politics, poverty, among others, while pointing out the presence of some anecdotes in different books, from X to XXI century, including a collection edited by Mussa Kuraiem in São Paulo in the 60s of the last century. This book, Giha, Hoja and Nasredin, forms the corpus of this dissertation.
