Ambivalence and the national imaginary : nation and canon formation in the emergence of the Saudi novelAplin, Thomas Michael January 2016 (has links)
Recent years have seen a surge of scholarship that foregrounds the relationship between the novel and the nation. The postcolonial condition of much of the Arab world has made the Arabic novel a compelling case. For historical reasons the focus has tended to be on the literary production of North Africa, the Levant and, to a lesser extent, Iraq. This thesis aims to redress the balance while interrogating certain assumptions about this relationship. Its main contention is that the early Saudi novel, as a unique case study, complicates traditional categorisations of the novel in Arabic, either in terms of a set of discrete, national traditions or as a monolithic, regional tradition, i.e. ‘the Arabic novel’. I argue that the ‘Saudi’ novel and its canonisation reflect, and were shaped by, the inherent ambivalence of the nation space and Arab discourses of national identity. This ambivalence gives rise to a third or liminal space of literary production. The thesis revolves around two axes. Firstly, it traces the emergence of the novel in Hijaz, from the 1930s through to the late 1950s. Although the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was founded in 1932, for a long time Hijaz retained a sense of its own distinct identity, countering the dominant Najdi-Wahhabi narrative. The close reading of selected texts explores how they express both a strong sense of Hijazi identity and a deep ambivalence towards ‘the Saudi nation’. The salience of ‘the woman question’ in Arab nationalist discourses makes gender a key consideration. The territorialising impulse present in much men’s fiction is shown to be absent from the Saudi women’s novel that emerged between the late 1950s and mid-1970s. Aside from exemplifying the genderedness of nation, this contributes to an explanation of the marginalisation of Saudi women’s novels from the canon. Secondly, the issue of novel and nation is linked to the critical discourse on the Saudi novel and its canonisation. Through an analysis of the literary articles that appeared in the pages of Hijaz’s early press, I trace the origins of a nationalist, ideological concept of the novel and its function that privileges the canonical realist novel for its mimetic representation of the writer’s national social reality. The result of this is that histories of the Saudi novel often present a teleology that is unable to adequately explain its construction or account for its liminality. The thesis offers a more nuanced understanding of the dynamic relationship between the novel and identity, as well as the novel’s construction in the Arabic context.

O presente trabalho procura identificar como os elementos linguísticos presentes no romance Dias com ele, da escritora síria Colette Khoury, veiculam valores e crenças, reforçando-os ou contrapondo-se a eles, baseando-se nos pressupostos teóricos da Análise Crítica do Discurso (ACD), especialmente os defendidos por van Dijk, e também os da Linguística Sistêmico-funcional (LSF). A partir de trechos escolhidos, em uma tradução livre do árabe para o português, a obra foi analisada e apresenta indícios de construção de um novo sujeito social; no entanto, o romance também possui traços de um discurso tradicional que considera naturais certas condutas sociais. Buscou-se avaliar se as escolhas lexicais do romance indicam ou não uma tentativa de rompimento de um padrão de submissão atribuído ao segmento feminino da sociedade árabe do final dos anos 50. Khoury não propõe de fato um novo modelo de padrão social feminino, mas mostra-nos uma falta de preparo por parte da sociedade árabe para este novo modelo que estava em construção. Percebemos ser necessário um processo de reeducação para que os homens consigam aceitar este novo modelo social feminino e considerá-lo complementar, em vez de uma ameaça, para que, tanto a humanidade quanto a sociedade, possam evoluir juntamente com os avanços da modernidade / This work seeks to identify how the linguistic elements present in the novel Day with him, from the Syrian writer Colette Khoury, convey values and beliefs, reinforcing them or opposing to them, based on a theoretical framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), especially those proposed by van Dijk, and also of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) . Through the analysis of some excerpts chosen and freely translated from Arabic into Portuguese, this work shows evidence of building a new social subject, however, the novel also has traces of a traditional discourse that considers certain social behaviors as \' natural \'. We tried to evaluate whether the lexical choices of the novel indicate or not an attempt to change the configuration of the submission assigned to the female segment of Arab society of the late 50s. Khoury does not actually propose a new model of female social standard, but shows us a lack of preparedness on the part of Arab society for this new model that was under construction. Perceiving a process of reeducation is necessary for men to be able to accept this new female social model and consider it complementary, rather than a threat, so that both humankind and society can evolve along with advances of modernity

poetic purposes. The art of the Muwashaḥāt was different in form and rhythm from the classic
Arabic poem, because the Muwashaḥāt had multi meters and rhymes, and it relied on the musical
rhythm. Besides, the poetic language of the Muwashaḥāt was based on both classical and
vernacular Arabic. The Muwashaḥāt was invented by the Andalusian poets to keep pace with the
musical development in Andalusia, the researcher will shed light on aesthetic methods, and the
poetic styles that characterized the Muwashaḥāt as an innovative poetic art which had strong ties
with the music and singing, and showing the impact of the Andalusian environment on the
development of this art. The art of the Muwashaḥāt left a distinguished mark on the Arabic
poetry and music, especially in the Maghreb and North Africa where a lot of musical schools and
poets still pay a lot of attention to such type of that Andalusian art. The continuous interest in
this art, until current days, strongly motivated the researcher to proceed with this study.

The Russian Influence On The Literary And Critical Writings Of Mikhail NaimySwanson, Maria Lebedeva January 2014 (has links)
My dissertation examines the Russian influence on the critical writing, poetry, prose and philosophy of Mikhail Naimy (1889-1988), the world renowned figure in modern Arabic literature. Together with Jibran Khalil Jibran, Ameen al-Rihani, Ilia Abu Madi, Rachid Ayuub, and several other Arab-American men of letters he founded the Pen Association, a literary league in New York in 1920 that lifted Arabic literature from the quagmire of stagnation, imitation and old classicism. They also promoted the new generation of Arab writers and made it an active force in Arab nationalism. Numerous researchers have studied the impact of British, American and French cultures and literatures on the Pen Association's creative writings. Meanwhile it was Russian literature that had the most important impact on Naimy, as well as on some other members of this literary association (though less). This influence has still only been studied superficially aside from some Soviet era analyses. My dissertation makes a much-needed contribution to this blank spot, since the Russian literary critic Vissarion Belinskiī (1811-1848) and the towering figure of Leo Tolstoī (1828-1910) contributed greatly to the foundation of the modern Arabic literature. My dissertation traces Mikhail Naimy's Russian Orthodox heritage in Lebanon, his education in Poltava, Ukraine, and his readings of Belinskiī and Tolstoī to show how he incorporates critical social reform, anticlericalism and mysticism into his important Arabic language works. It also shows the influence of the Russian literary criticism on Naimy's critical articles. My dissertation sheds light on global literary processes, as Naimy was able to synthesize Russian, European and American literary traditions into his native Arabic heritage. This integration is an important part of the evolution of modern Arabic literature and an interesting phenomenon that emerged in the American melting pot of the early twentieth century. My research has significant methodological value, as it will identify the typology and significance of cultural contacts, based on the example of influence mentioned above. It will also contribute to an important topic of the renewed interest in the academy - Russian influences and impacts in the Middle East and in Arabic culture and literature.
