Reading behind the lines: archiving the Canadian news media record

Sallis, Josephine 22 August 2013 (has links)
Historians and other researchers regularly turn to news media as primary sources for studies on a wide range of topics. Generally, the materials used are the end products of the news-publishing process – newspaper clippings, radio and television broadcasts, and web programming. These published documents, beyond relating specific events, reflect the values and perspectives of the societies in which they have been created. As products of a creative and editorial process, these news media documents can provide a rich source of information about the media. Government records, personal papers, and published memoirs of those in the media industry, along with media trade publications, are also often studied for insights into the news publishing process. What is lacking in these studies is an examination of the varied records -- internal correspondence, memos, minutes, and forms, for example -- made and used to perform and manage the media's work itself, rather than to present it in final published form. These records are not usually archived by the media. This has handicapped historical understanding of the media and contributed to the underdevelopment of the literature on the history of the Canadian news media. There is irony in this. The media often claims the vital role of holding others to account for their actions, especially government and political institutions. It often does so by championing and using access to information legislation and criticizing lax recordkeeping on the part of these organizations. And yet, the records that would hold the media itself to account are rarely archived and made available. How the problem of the underdevelopment of media archives in Canada can be addressed needs to be explored. This thesis will do so. This is important given the powerful past and present role of the media in our society.

Participatory archiving: exploring a collaborative approach to Aboriginal societal provenance

Rydz, Michelle 23 September 2010 (has links)
This thesis outlines the history of thinking about provenance in the archival profession, focusing specifically on the emergence of the concept of societal provenance and its implications for Aboriginal societal memory. It presents various ways in which the archival profession is currently involved in participatory projects for the public at large and for Aboriginal communities in particular. This thesis asks the question, if records are a creation of community and society, then should not community and society be more involved in their archiving? The thesis calls on archivists to advance the practice of participatory archiving by continuing to engage in collaborative projects, to open dialogue between the archival profession and Aboriginal communities as a means of establishing relationships of trust, and to embrace ways of remembering that challenge and unsettle the traditional archival application of provenance.

Mr. Putin - Arkivman : Vladimir Putins syn på arkiv och arkivhandlingar

Berglund, Petter January 2020 (has links)
Researchers have referred to Vladimir Putin as a “History man”. It has been confirmed that he takes a great personal interest in history and frequently speaks about the topic. However, previous research has not taken account for how Putin gives his statements about history additional authority. One way in which he does this is by referring to archives and archival documents, thus giving his statements about history an additional aura of “truthfulness”. This essay aims to partially fill the gap in previous research by examining Putin’s statements about history and archives from a perspective of archival science by asking the following research questions: “How does Putin view archives and archival records?”, “What can archives be used for and what characteristics are they given by Putin?”. The theoretical and methodological basis for this essay is discourse analysis and Jörn Rüsen’s typology of historical narratives. By examining the discourses Vladimir Putin expresses and reproduces about archives insight has been gained into the way in which a prominent politician uses archives, how he views their function in society and what their characteristics are. As Vladimir Putin seemingly always speaks about archives in relation to history the latter could not be ignored, which is why Rüsens’ typology was used to examine what kind of historical narrative Putin expresses when speaking about archives. The analysis in this essay shows that Vladimir Putin has a strong belief in archives as mirrors of the past. According to the Russian President archives portray a completely accurate and unquestionable account for how history has unfolded. He dismisses any historical narrative that is not based on archival documents as politicized speculation. In Putin’s eyes archives also play a central role in preserving a common, national heritage for the entire Russian nation as a whole.

This research carried out an investigation regarding the process of development of computerized archival management systems for documents of higher education institutions, specifically observing the function of archival description, the use of the archival description standards and the use of requirements of the e -Arq Brazil as the central axis of the research in interaction with the information retrieval area. The computerized systems adopted in two (02) higher education institutions, the State University of Londrina (UEL) and the Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP), were chosen as a case study. Since both of them have their own software, developed to meet the daily demands of work related to their core and non-core activities, a registration and monitoring of discipline in the system is chosen, observing the view of its user. As a methodological resource, it is adopted a bibliographic and documentary research, of an exploratory, descriptive and explanatory nature, with a qualitative approach, thus conducting a case study seeking evidence of documentation, direct observation and participant observation, following a pre-defined script. The results present the fulfillment of certain essential functionalities of each software, according to a set of requirements determined from e-Arq Brasil, the nature and type of automation technology and with the precepts of information retrieval and archival description and other archival principles essential to SIGAD's. This procedure aims not only to contribute to the fulfillment of the user experience, but also to propose a model for a computerized document management system, closer to the user's reality and to the organization's demand. It also identifies, as a branch of both research and archival activity, the scenario of study of improvements for SIGAD's using the interdisciplinary knowledge of two sciences, that of information, through archivology and information retrieval, and that of computer science, through software engineering, human-computer interaction, and the adoption of the contextual task analysis technique. It is concluded that the archivist as an information professional must know the innovative aspects that involve the activities of the organizations in the current market, strengthening his/her bases, improving his/her techniques and producing research that can add value to his/her training and his/her qualification for the challenges of modern society.
