Through exploratory research that permeates the origins of video games, their relationships, motivations and evolution, its intended to develop a deeper understanding of the structure and definition of the electronic game in order to develop an gameart object that can reflect, deconstruct and /or criticize characteristics from the universe of eletronic games . After presenting the definition, genres and formats of games, the research turns to the definition and analysis of the concept of gameart, revisiting the origins of this new creative possibility and reflecting on the possibilities to treat a video game as an art object. The theoretical analysis developed here became the basis for experimentation and construction of aesthetic and conceptual scheme, aiming at the creative process of two gameart objects , the first more generalist and created as an exercise of introduction to the universe of gameart and the second, deeper, seeking a detailing of the elements that define it. Both gameart objects served as basis for the construction of a third – and last – gameart object, presenting concepts acquired by experience with previous works : Labyrinth of the Mind.

Ambivalent animal

Thomas, Geoffrey Piers 01 April 2010 (has links)
The Ambivalent Animal project explores the interactions of animals, culture and technology. The project employs both artistic practice and critical theory, each in ways that inspire the other. My creative practice centers around two projects that focus on domestic pets. These projects highlight the animal's uncertain status as they explore the overlapping ontologies of animal, human and machine. They provide concrete artifacts that engage with theoretical issues of anthropocentrism, animality and alterity. My theoretical work navigates between the fields of animal studies, art and design, media and culture studies, and philosophy. My dissertation explores animality through four real and imagined animal roles: cyborg, clone, chimera and shapeshifter. Each animal role is considered in relation to three dialectics: irreducibility and procedurality, autonomy and integration, aura and abjection. These dialectics do not seek full synthesis but instead embrace the oscillations of irresolvable debates and desires. The dialectics bring into focus issues of epistemology, ontology, corporeality and subjectivity. When the four animal roles engage the three dialectics, connected yet varied themes emerge. The cyborgian animal is simultaneously liberated and regulated, assisted and restricted, integrated and isolated. The cloned animal is an emblem of renewal and loss; she is both idealized code and material flesh and finds herself caught in the battles of nature and nurture. The chimera is both rebel and conformist; his unusual juxtapositions pioneer radical corporeal transgressions but also conform to the mechanisms of global capital. And the shapeshifter explores the thrill and anxiety of an altered phenomenology; she gains new perceptions though unstable subjectivity. These roles reveal corporeal adjustments and unfamiliar subjectivities that inspire the creative practice. Both my writing and making employ an ambivalent aesthetic--an aesthetic approach that evokes two or more incompatible sensibilities. The animal's uncertain status contributes to this aesthetic: some animals enjoy remarkable care and attention, while others are routinely exploited, abused and discarded. Ambivalence acknowledges the complexity of lived experience, philosophical and political debate, and academic inquiry. My approach recognizes the light and dark of these complex ambivalences--it privileges paradox and embraces the confusion and wonder of creative research. Rather than erase, conceal or resolve ambiguity, an ambivalent aesthetic foregrounds the limits of language and representation and highlights contradiction and irresolution.

On the last decades researches have emerged on the topics of on-body technologies and on-body interactions exploring human factors (e.g: gesture, touch, perception, body characteristics, skin, among others) to conceive technological devices, systems and interfaces that uses the human body as an input and output of data has been accentuated prominently. Multi-media epithelial artifacts developed through Augmented Reality have created a new experimental domain in Art & Technology that can be designated as digital skin interfaces. Summarizing, experiments in this domain: (i) combine real and digital objects on the surface of the skin, and (ii) are performed interactively by their users in real time. These multimodal epithelial artifacts transform the skin into an interface, taking advantage of the body's surface (skin characteristics, skin micro-movements, body movements) by providing modes of interaction (built-in and tangible interaction) between the skin and computer systems. The skin becomes a dynamic space and semi-structured in a multimodal (visual, auditory or haptic). This research can be summarized as follows: (i) from the scope of art & technology to analyze a new augmented reality system for generating digital skin interfaces (ii) to test the set of functionalities of this system considering artistic perfomance environments. This research focuses on the main projects recently developed in the domain called skin interfaces and explores the experimental potential in art and performance contexts of a new system based on augmented reality for image generation in the skin resulting from collaboration with the Laboratory of Intelligent and Cognitive Systems (LASIC), State University of Feira de Santana (UEFS), Bahia.
