The affect of acculturation on obesity among foreign-born Asians residing in the United States

<p> This study examined the relationship between acculturation and obesity in foreign-born Asians residing in the United States. Two proxies were used to measure level of acculturation: years of United States residency and English language use and proficiency. Hypothesis 1 predicted that acculturation measured as number of years of residence will positively predict obesity. Hypothesis 2 predicted that acculturation measured as English language preference and proficiency will positively predict obesity.</p><p> The study used data from the 2009 California Health Interview Survey. Study participants met two inclusion criteria: foreign born and Asian. Point Biserial was run to determine whether or not there was a correlation.</p><p> Results showed a weak relationship between obesity and both variable used to measure acculturation. Additional exploratory analysis was performed to determine whether or not there was a relationship between obesity and acculturation for each Asian ethnicity. Results of this exploratory analysis were mixed. </p>

The model minority at risk| Barriers to mental health access for Chinese Americans

<p> This thesis examines the role of limited English proficiency (LEP) as a contributing significant barrier to the mental health access for Chinese living in America. The literature purports that language barriers do present significant challenges to providing timely and effective mental health services worldwide. Additionally, studies highlight two reoccurring themes on the mental health of Chinese Americans, including their underutilization of mental health services and the premature termination of treatment in comparison to other nonminority clients. Using the 2009 dataset from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) 2009 Adult Questionnaire, data was analyzed and it was concluded that a relationship exists between mental health status and language proficiency. Further study is necessary to determine where it may be best for health professionals to invest their efforts in the mental health care of this deserving population. It would behoove organizations, communities, and health care leaders to peer deeper into the interconnected relationship between mental health utilization and language proficiency.</p>

A cross-cultural study of Hwa-Byung with middle-aged women between native Koreans in South Korea and Korean immigrants in the United States

<p> Hwa-Byung, known as an anger illness, was conceptualized in Korean culture and listed in the glossary under Culture-Bound Syndromes in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Hwa-Byung develops when the emotions of anger have been suppressed for a long period of time and it becomes difficult to control those feelings. Common complaints of Hwa-Byung have two dimensions, psychological and physical symptoms. The prevalence of Hwa-Byung exhibits gender differences in that the majority of individuals who experience Hwa-Byung are women between the ages of 40 and 60. However, as the number of Korean immigrants in the United States continues to increase and their issues draw attention from researchers, the topic of Hwa-Byung receives little. Because Korean immigrants in the United States share a cultural background with their origin of ethnicity, and at the same time, may also assimilate the American culture during the acculturation process, this study will address the cultural differences in Hwa-Byung between native Koreans who live in South Korea and Korean immigrants in the United States. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to examine the differences and similarities of Hwa-Byung in native Korean middle-aged women in South Korea and Korean immigrants in the United States, roughly between the age range of late-30's to middle 60's, by investigating the influencing factors of stressful life events, stress response, anger expression, and demographic background. </p><p> A sample size of at least 200 participants, required for each group, using both paper-pencil and web-based methods, depended on participants' preferences, which were influenced by a gap in ages and the level of familiarity with and/or ability to access Internet. Participants were randomly selected from major cities, both in South Korea (including Seoul, Incheon, Busan, Daejeon, and Gyeonggi Province) and the United States (including Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles), using similar proportions of ages for both groups for the equivalences of participants in cross-cultural research. </p><p> Survey measures included five instruments: (a) the Hwa-Byung scale (Kwon, Kim, Park, Lee, Min, &amp; Kwon, 2008); (b) Life Stress for Korean women (Chon &amp; Kim, 2003); (c) stress response inventory (SRI) (Koh, Park, &amp; Kim, 2000); (d) anger expression (Hahn, Chon, Lee, &amp; Spielberger, 1997), and (e) demographic background that measured the variables used in this study. To minimize the weakness of language differences used in the different cultural contexts, survey packages for Korean immigrant participants in the United States were formatted in both Korean and English for each item. Thus, a translation process became necessary, especially for the Korean instruments of the Hwa-Byung Scale, Life Stress for Korean women and Stress Response Inventory (SRI), from Korean into Englishtwo of which were (originally developed by Korean researchers) . On the other hand, native Koreans submitted only the Korean version of questionnaires because they fully understood the meaning of questionnaire statements, as well as in order to get rid of possible distractions by the inclusion of English sentences.</p>

Intimate partner violence prevention for Korean American immigrants| A grant proposal

<p> The purpose of this project was to design a program, locate a potential funding source and write a grant to fund an intimate partner violence prevention program for the Korean American immigrant community in Los Angeles County. An extensive literature review was performed to investigate the prevalence and effects of intimate partner violence in the Korean immigrant community as well as identifying the need for culturally specific prevention interventions. A host agency was selected, Korean American Family Services, to propose a prevention workshop program in Los Angeles, California.</p><p> A search was conducted to locate an appropriate funder for the prevention workshops. The U.S. Department of Justice, Culturally and Linguistically Specific Services Program, was selected as a funding source for the grant program. Actual submission and/or funding of the grant was not required for the successful completion of this project.</p>

Restoring, Rewriting, Reimagining: Asian American Science Fiction Writers and the Time Travel Narrative

Asian American literature has continued to evolve since the emergence of first generation Asian American writers in 1975. Authors have continued to interact not only with Asian American content, but also with different forms to express that content – one of these forms is genre writing. Genre writing allows Asian American writers to interact with genre conventions, using them to inform Asian American tropes and vice versa. This thesis focuses on the genre of science fiction, specifically in the subgenre of time travel. Using three literary case studies – Ken Liu’s “The Man Who Ended History,” Charles Yu’s How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe, and Ted Chiang’s “Story of Your Life” – this thesis seeks to explore the ways in which different Asian American writers have interacted with the genre, using it to retell Asian American narratives in new ways. “The Man Who Ended History” explores the use of time travel in restoring lost or silenced historical narratives, and the implications of that usage; How to Live Safely is a clever rewriting of the immigrant narrative, which embeds the story within the conventions of a science fictional universe; “Story of Your Life” presents a reimagining of alterity, and investigates how we might interact with the alien in a globalized world. Ultimately, all three stories, though quite different, express Asian American concerns in new and interesting ways; they may point to ways that Asian American writers can continue to write and rewrite Asian American narratives, branching out into new genres and affecting those genres in turn.

Best practices and attributes of bicultural leaders

<p> This study sought to uncover the attributes of successful bicultural leaders. Findings suggested that any one of four acculturation strategies chosen by bicultural leaders depended on the intensity of the dominant spouse's alliance to their Country of Origin, their identity self-construal and opportunities to create supportive in-groups that made the bicultural individual the center of in-group connectivity. Integrated biculturals exhibit a tendency to create networks, where over time they become "central connectors" affording them unique positions of influence, knowledge transfer and power. This study posits that Network Centrality is a Bicultural Competence, recognized by its users as a pivotal antecedent to their success strategies. Educators may benefit from study findings that include participant suggested content specifically targeting new foreign born immigrants to help advance their achievements based on the study's findings of best practices and attributes of successful bicultural leaders.</p>

Examining transformational leadership traits between Asian and Caucasian Americans in higher education

<p> The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental comparative study was to measure and compare the leadership styles of higher education professionals across levels of responsibility between Asian-American and Caucasian-American individuals. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and additional demographic surveys were used to obtain measurements and personal leadership traits for the dependent and independent variables. A self-rated questionnaire of the MLQ survey measured nine characteristics of leadership qualities (subscales) of the transformational, transactional, or passive/avoidant (laissez-faire) of the participants. Stratified random sampling technique helped identify these two groups of higher education leaders. Inferential statistical tests of the Mann-Whitney U test were used to identify if significant difference of leadership styles existed for the independent variables of race, mentored experience, birth country, SES background, age, and gender between Asian-American and Caucasian-American higher educational leaders. Significant differences were indicated on transformational leadership quality subscale for IM and transactional leadership quality subscale for MBEA. A third independent factor of age also indicated a significant difference between older and younger leaders in the transformational leadership quality subscale for IS. Higher education institutions and decision makers could use the study result as a point of reference to guide diverse Asian-American individuals in higher education to leadership training and development in their institutions with the aid of a modified PDCA map for a conceptual framework of implementing such process. Such action could advance Asian Americans into open leadership positions and make institutions more diverse to represent its respective community.</p>

Understanding Postcolonial South Asian Communities Through Bollywood

Inspired by my personal experience as a South Asian-American, I chose to create a series of paintings that seek to analyze the relationship between South Asians and a Western environment. I was further influenced by Bollywood painted posters, which I argue encapsulate postcolonial aesthetics in the form of fair skin, colored eyes, and exoticism. Moreover, I believe that Bollywood has continued to disseminate these aesthetics to the South Asian collective community. Bollywood and its implicit fascination with the West, in addition to its inherently South Asian identity, embody the struggle that many South Asians face. This struggle, which I as a South Asian-American woman painter have also experienced, includes a constant internal conflict between desiring to fit into Western culture and trying to maintain one’s cultural heritage within a Western environment. Ultimately, through these paintings and this essay, I seek to shed light on this complex relationship between South Asian culture and a Western context.

Chinese American Adolescents' Cultural Frameworks for Understanding Parenting

abstract: Parenting approaches that are firm yet warm (i.e., authoritative parenting) have been found to be robustly beneficial for mainstream White Americans youths, but do not demonstrate similarly consistent effects among Chinese Americans (CA) adolescents. Evidence suggests that CA adolescents interpret and experience parenting differently than their mainstream counterparts given differences in parenting values and child-rearing norms between traditional Chinese and mainstream American cultures. The current study tests the theory that prospective effects of parenting on psychological and academic functioning depends on adolescents' cultural frameworks for interpreting and understanding parenting. CA adolescents with values and expectations of parenting that are more consistent with mainstream American parenting norms were predicted to experience parenting similar to their White American counterparts (i.e., benefiting from a combination of parental strictness and warmth). In contrast, CA adolescents with parenting values and expectations more consistent with traditional Chinese parenting norms were predicted to experience parenting and its effects on academic and psychological outcomes differently than patterns documented in the mainstream literature. This study was conducted with a sample of Chinese American 9th graders (N = 500) from the Multicultural Family Adolescent Study. Latent Class Analysis (LCA), a person-centered approach to modeling CA adolescents' cultural frameworks for interpreting parenting, was employed using a combination of demographic variables (e.g., nativity, language use at home, mother's length of stay in the U.S.) and measures of parenting values and expectations (e.g., parental respect, ideal strictness & laxness). The study then examined whether prospective effects of parenting behaviors (strict control, warmth, and their interaction effect) on adolescent adjustment (internalizing and externalizing symptoms, substance use, and GPA) were moderated by latent class membership. The optimal LCA solution identified five distinct cultural frameworks for understanding parenting. Findings generally supported the idea that effects of parenting on CA adolescent adjustment depend on adolescents' cultural framework for parenting. The classic authoritative parenting effect (high strictness and warmth leads to positive outcomes) was found for the two most acculturated groups of adolescents. Perceived Racial Discrimination and Psychological Distress Among Asian American Adolescents: Moderating Roles of Family Racial Socialization and Nativity Status

abstract: This dissertation used the risk and resilience framework to examine the associations between perceived racial discrimination, family racial socialization, nativity status, and psychological distress. Regression analyses were conducted to test the links between perceived racial discrimination and psychological distress and the moderation on these associations by family racial socialization and nativity status. Results suggest, for U.S.-born adolescents, cultural socialization strengthened the relation between subtle racial discrimination and anxiety symptoms. In addition, promotion of mistrust buffered the relations of both subtle and blatant racial discrimination on depressive symptoms. For foreign-born adolescents, promotion of mistrust exacerbated the association between blatant racial discrimination and depressive symptoms. Overall, the findings revealed the detrimental effects of perceived racial discrimination on the mental health of Asian American adolescents, how some family racial socialization strategies strengthen or weaken the relation between perceived racial discrimination and psychological distress, and the different ways foreign-born and U.S-born adolescents may interpret racial discrimination and experience family racial socialization. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Family and Human Development 2012
