Educational attitudes and aspirations of Asian girls

Singh-Raud, Harkirtan January 1997 (has links)
South-east Asian girls are frequently categorised as 'Asian' without taking into consideration their gender or religious up bringing. South-east Asian girls are not a homogeneous cluster as perceived by ethnocentric British establishments and institutions. They are discernible, for example, by religion, sect, linguistic association, caste and country of origin. The Asian culture has the prevalent image of being peculiarly oppressive and restrictive for women and the pronouncements of the 'community leaders' are often relied upon, and not the views of women themselves. Hence it is important to permit women to verbalise about their own situation and views. Researchers have, in the past, used their personal experience in formulating hypotheses. Being a British born Asian, one appreciates that the attitudes and aspirations of young Asian women are changing and more research is obligatory if educational establishments and other institutions are to understand and help their Asian female colleagues and students better, by aiding the policy making process and practice. This research has explored the relationship between religious upbringing and attitudes of Asian girls and women in higher education towards school education, further education, employment and settlement. The case study was intended to be illuminative. It was found that the girls answered in different ways and it was clear that some of the responses were clearly categorised by their religion. The findings suggest that if institutions in Britain fail to understand the contrasting effects of religion on ethnic minority students then South-east Asian students will experience 'creedism' and lack of support due to the non-religious orientated assumptions made.

The influence of healthy relationship formation and teen dating violence: a qualitative analysis of South Asian youth residing in the United States

Ragavan, Maya 24 October 2018 (has links)
Teen dating violence (TDV) has well-documented detrimental health effects. Scant research has examined the perspectives of ethnically diverse youth about the impact of culture on TDV. We sought to explore the intersection between culture and TDV specifically for South Asian adolescents residing in the US. We conducted semi-structured interviews with South Asian adolescents aged 16-21. The interview guide had three parts: 1) exploring participants’ perspectives on TDV and healthy relationships within the South Asian community; 2) examining how different components of their cultural identity impact their romantic relationships; and 3) understanding ideas for TDV prevention programs for South Asian youth. Interview transcripts were coded using thematic analysis. Twenty-five adolescent females participated; the majority (76%) trace their heritage to India, were born abroad (62%), and are in college (80%). The majority believed that dating was stigmatized within the South Asian community, forcing youth to hide relationships from their parents. Participants described aspects of culture that may negatively impact relationships (e.g. patriarchal attitudes and fear of stigma), as well as those that may protect teens (e.g. close-knit community). Conflicts about dating due to generational differences were also discussed. Adolescents suggested programs for South Asian youth focused on engaging parents in conversations about TDV and promoting gender equity. About half thought TDV prevention programs should be culturally-tailored for South Asian youth, while others believed multicultural programs would be more effective. Although South Asian culture may confer some protection for youth experiencing TDV, stigma against dating and generational differences may create unique challenges. Future work should examine how to mediate parent-adolescent cultural conflicts around dating. / 2019-10-23T00:00:00Z

Suhṛdayasaṃhitā: A Compendium of Studies on South Asian Culture, Philosophy, and Religion. Dedicated to Dominik Wujastyk

Maas, Philipp A., Cerulli, Anthony 24 May 2024 (has links)

SAVORING STEREOTYPES: EXPLORING ORIENTALIZED NARRATIVES THROUGH AMERICAN REACTIONS TO EAST ASIAN FOODS ON YOUTUBE

Tyler Chan (18452739) 28 April 2024 (has links)

This study conducts a comprehensive multimodal analysis of online food reaction videos (OFRV), uploaded by Buzzfeed, featuring Americans consuming and engaging with East Asian foods. Employing social semiotic theory, Orientalism, and colonialist discourses as theoretical lenses, this research aims to discern how these videos contribute to narratives that perpetuate the orientalized view that East Asian culture is fundamentally different from American culture and examine how these narratives are constructed multimodally via the YouTube platform. The methodological approach involves moment analysis, multimodal transcription, and in-depth analysis of selected moments to unravel narrative patterns and the various multimodal methods employed. Findings reveal pervasive decontextualization, stigmatizing, and an us vs. them paradigm surrounding the food, which reinforces orientalized portrayals. The study identifies distinct narrative patterns such as savagery, strangeness, sickness, and fear surrounding representations of Asian food, highlighting the multifaceted ways these narratives are constructed. The term "gastronomic orientalism" emerges from the analysis, encapsulating the complex process by which these videos utilize food representation to create an oriental narrative. This paper not only illuminates the multimodal construction of gastronomic orientalism but also contributes to future research by introducing a qualitative analysis method. The findings from this research suggest that media producers should prioritize cultural sensitivity and inclusivity to counter othering narratives against Asians in online media. Additionally, it suggests that future studies delve into more diversified video content and incorporate quantitative methods to yield more generalizable findings on cultural representation narratives.
