Of the relation many times contradictory between the daily life and the imaginary one are that the heading appeared of the dissertation - "Between the dream and the death" - marking the existing conflict in the lives of the malandros between the onírica dimension of living in freedom and the cruellest side of the life, the imminent death. It is intended to understand the reality of the involved young in criminal activities from an internal perspective to the problem, being searched to bring its voices, its yearnings and dreams. The field research concentrated in the accomplishment of interviews in depth and stories of comment, basing itself, of the theoretical point of view, in the works of José Machado Pais, Marc Augé, Alain Touraine and Stuart Hall. With relation to the studied object, one are the following hypotheses which had been confirmed by the results of the field research: 1) the motivations of the malandros in relation to the ingression and permanence in crime connect it the process of constitution of its identities, to the paper that assume in its quarter of origin, to imaginary and myths the contemporaries on crime and freedom, shared by them; 2) these youngsters take for itself the denomination of malandros as an attempt to escape of the classification of delinqüentes/marginais imposed by the society, on the other hand and for another one, as landmark of a professionalization of the criminal activity; 3) the daily one of the malandros presents especificidades in relation to the society as a whole, especificidades these that assume a limiaridade character placing itself in the limit between legal and the illegal one, between youth and the adult life, between the center and the periphery / Esta dissertação busca compreender o cotidiano e o imaginário de um grupo de rapazes, na periferia da Zona Leste de São Paulo, com idades entre 24 e 30 anos, envolvidos em atividades criminais, que se auto-intitulam malandros. Da relação muitas vezes contraditória entre a vida cotidiana e o imaginário é que surgiu o título da dissertação Entre o sonho e a morte marcando o conflito existente nas vidas dos malandros entre a dimensão onírica de viver em liberdade e o lado mais cruel da vida, a morte iminente. Pretende-se compreender a realidade dos jovens envolvidos em atividades criminais a partir de uma perspectiva interna ao problema, buscando trazer à tona suas vozes, seus anseios e sonhos. A pesquisa de campo concentrou-se na realização de entrevistas em profundidade e relatos de observação, fundamentando-se, do ponto de vista teórico, nos trabalhos de Machado Pais, Marc Augé, Alain Touraine e Stuart Hall. Com relação ao objeto estudado, levantou-se as seguintes hipóteses as quais foram confirmadas pelos resultados da pesquisa de campo: 1) as motivações dos malandros em relação ao ingresso e permanência na criminalidade conectam-se ao processo de constituição de suas identidades, ao papel que assumem em seu bairro de origem, ao imaginário e aos mitos contemporâneos sobre o crime e a liberdade, por eles partilhados; 2) esses rapazes tomam para si a denominação de malandros, por um lado, como uma tentativa de escapar da classificação de delinqüentes/marginais imposta pela sociedade e, por outro, como marco de uma profissionalização da atividade criminal; 3) o cotidiano dos malandros apresenta especificidades em relação à sociedade como um todo, especificidades estas que assumem um caráter de limiaridade situando-se no limite entre o legal e o ilegal, entre a juventude e a vida adulta, entre o centro e a periferia
