Strategies of Defending Astrology: A Continuing TraditionGee, Teri 11 December 2012 (has links)
Astrology is a science which has had an uncertain status throughout its history, from its beginnings in Greco-Roman Antiquity to the medieval Islamic world and Christian Europe which led to frequent debates about its validity and what kind of a place it should have, if any, in various cultures. Written in the second century A.D., Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos is not the earliest surviving text on astrology. However, the complex defense given in the Tetrabiblos will be treated as an important starting point because it changed the way astrology would be justified in Christian and Muslim works and the influence Ptolemy’s presentation had on later works represents a continuation of the method introduced in the Tetrabiblos. Abū Ma‘shar’s Kitāb al-Madkhal al-kabīr ilā ‘ilm akām al-nujūm, written in the ninth century, was the most thorough surviving defense from the Islamic world. Roger Bacon’s Opus maius, although not focused solely on advocating astrology, nevertheless, does contain a significant defense which has definite links to the works of both Abū Ma‘shar and Ptolemy. As such, he demonstrates another stage in the development of astrology. These three works together reveal the threads of a trend of a rationalized astrology separated from its mythical origins which began with Ptolemy and survived through both medieval Islam and medieval Europe. In the two examples of defending astrology I have used, Abū Ma‘shar and Roger Bacon, Ptolemy’s influence can be seen to have persisted from the second century through to the thirteenth, and the nature of the differences in their defenses illustrates the continuation and evolution of the tradition of defending astrology.

Heavenly influences : the cosmic and social order of New Spain at the turn of the seventeenth centuryPeterson, Heather Rose 01 August 2011 (has links)
This is the story of Spanish belonging in New Spain and the creation of New Spaniards. Tracing Spanish perceptions of place, the body, belonging, and Indian mortality, as well as constructions of “nativeness” and “Spanishness” from the conquest, this work does three things. First it examines the ideological constructs behind Spanish belonging, and the ideas that Spaniards brought with them about their bodies and their relationship to the environment. Second it follows the progression of these ideas through the first three generations of Spanish colonization, paying particular attention to the way that political rivalries, the exigencies of the crown, and Indian mortality affected discourse on belonging and identity. Finally, it captures a moment at the turn of the seventeenth century, when residents of New Spain began to re-imagine their belonging and their relationship to the land and its original inhabitants. / text

Wang , Pei-Lung Unknown Date (has links)

[en] HERE ARE YOU: ASTROLOGY AS A SYSTEM OF COHERENCE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF SMALL AND LARGE NARRATIVES / [pt] EIS VOCÊ: A ASTROLOGIA COMO SISTEMA DE COERÊNCIA NA CONSTRUÇÃO DE PEQUENAS E GRANDES NARRATIVASMILENA LEPSCH DA COSTA 16 August 2018 (has links)
[en] In modernity, where relationships are defined as liquid (BAUMAN, 2005, 2006), this paper seeks from the standpoint of narrative analysis (BASTOS; BIAR, 2015), the popularity / productivity of astrology, especially in the construction of an essentializing discourse on identity. For this, I present 22 research interviews (MISHLER, 1986) on the subject, carried out with students from PUC- Rio from 2016 to 2017, in which a considerable amount of small histories and life stories emerge (LINDE, 1993), analyzed here qualitatively and interpretatively. I understand narrative as an important tool for the construction of meaning in the social world (BASTOS; BIAR, 2015) and for the formation of autobiographical identities (BRUNER, 1990; MOITA LOPES, 2001). In these terms, I observe which discursive strategies the interviewees use to build stories about themselves / others, striving to present themselves in the best possible way in this theater (GOFFMAN, 2002 (1959), 2011 (1967), 2013 (1979)), which is the research interview. It is noted that many of these stories are stitched from the system of coherence of astrology (LINDE, 1993). That is, the interviewees construct accounts (DE FINA, 2009) or cause-and-effect relationships, with the purpose of claiming some assumption (BLOCK, 2012) in discourse, especially for behaviors considered socially negative. In this way, signs, in relieving narrators of agency, act in the face work (GOFFMAN, 2011(1967)), collaborating for the favorable presentation of the interviewees.

Observation of celestial phenomena in the Gospel of MatthewUm, Hongsuk January 2016 (has links)
A close reading of the gospel of Matthew highlights the striking reports of the observation of distinct celestial phenomena in the narrative (e.g. 2.1-12; 3.16-17; 17.5; 24.29-31). However, the motif of celestial phenomena in Matthew lacks a full or even comprehensive investigation. These have been addressed only in part both in journal articles and in individual chapters of various books. Looking at these celestial phenomena as interrelated parts of the evangelist’s wide theological perspective in the gospel, this study explores Matthew’s description of these occurrences in relation to the contemporary perspective on celestial phenomena and astrological application. It seeks to assess what meaning and significance the Matthean representation of celestial phenomena was designed to have in the process of the gospel narrative and for the readership. In so doing, this study discusses the conception of heaven and the attitude towards celestial phenomena in the Graeco-Roman world in the Second Temple period, the Sitz im Leben of the Matthean community, and the significance of the heaven motif in the gospel narrative, as preliminaries to the investigation of Matthew’s portrayal of celestial phenomena. This study will show that the motif of celestial phenomena in Matthew carefully crafted and thoughtfully arranged plays a significant role in authenticating the identity of Jesus.
