Ideas of Order: The Meaning and Appeal of Contemporary Astrological Belief

Thornton, Tracy 27 October 2016 (has links)
Astrology is a belief system that has existed for almost 2,500 years. This enduring form of belief has not been effectively studied by scholars and thus we know little about why beliefs commonly stigmatized as superstitions continue to appeal to people today. My research, based on fieldwork and interviews with astrologers in the Portland, Oregon area, demonstrates that the longevity of this belief system may be attributed to its ability to provide meaning and purpose to people. Throughout history, astrology has been adapted to and has evolved within the cultures in which it exists, and its latest adaptation reveals a close connection to the New Age movement. Astrological worldviews, which assume a correlation between predictable celestial cycles and human activity, are rooted in a premise of fatalism, but this analysis reveals a nuanced view of fate that often is empowering rather than limiting.

[en] THE ROLE OF TRANSLATION IN THE TRANSMISSION OF SCIENCE: THE CASE OF PTOLEMYS TETRABIBLOS / [pt] O PAPEL DA TRADUÇÃO NA TRANSMISSÃO DA CIÊNCIA: O CASO DO TETRABIBLOS DE PTOLOMEU

CRISTINA DE AMORIM MACHADO 13 April 2010 (has links)
[en] This dissertation presents a history of translations of a founding text from the Hellenistic astrological canon: Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos, which was written in Greek, in Alexandria (2nd century A.D.). It is generally assumed that science is transmitted intact along the years, thus grounding the authority of scientific texts and their authors. Translation is rarely remembered in the history of science, and when it happens, it usually plays a secondary role. Nevertheless the transmission of science always implies some kind of rewriting. Therefore the hypothesis here proposed is that Tetrabiblos, as all ancient scientific books which reached us, has pilgrimaged and constantly changed through time and space, revealing its historical feature. Scientific authors and texts are historical constructs, and the latter are handed down in form of rewritten vestiges, linguistically or spatiotemporally separated from the original writings to some extent. That pilgrimage through several languages and cultures has set up what we can call Ptolemy’s manuscripted and printed textual tradition. It is to this movable tradition that we will refer to historicize the origins and processes of transmission of Tetrabiblos from Antiquity to Renaissance. It is a biography of Ptolemy’s astrological book, regarding the amalgam between astrology and astronomy at that time and the extensive circulation of this knowledge across the Hellenistic period, the Arabic world and the Iberical context, especially its repercussion during the maritime expansionism.

Cartesian Method and Experiment

Spink, Aaron 07 April 2017 (has links)
The conception of René Descartes as the arch-rationalist has been sufficiently exploded in recent literature; however, there is still a large lacuna in our understanding of how empirical research and experimentation fits within his philosophy. My dissertation is directed at addressing just this problem. I contend that Descartes’ famed method is not a singular monolith but instead two interdependent methods: one directed at metaphysical and epistemological truth, while the other directed at empirical questions and contingent facts of the world. I claim there is evidence for this position not only in his actual scientific practice, but also in the rhetorical structure of the Discourse on Method and the Principles of Philosophy. In exploring the empirical side of Descartes’ method, I show how his unusual system produces a system of experiment designed to serve both as a discovery and verification tool at the same time. As a further application of my interpretation, I argue that the Passions of the Soul and Descartes’ ethical theory expressed in his correspondence must also be seen as part of his two-fold methodology. Instead of attempting to cast Descartes as a virtue ethicist or deontologist, as is normally done, I emphasize that Descartes’ ethics is centered on the mind-body union, and therefore, includes an empirical element as well. The end result is an ethics that requires a detailed study of mechanics, anatomy, physics, as well as medicine. Lastly, I show how this methodology can help us understand the works of some of his early followers: Claude Gadroys and Jacques Rohault. Both of these philosophers not only serve to ground my interpretation, but also to highlight aspects of Cartesian that have often been passed over. I show how the experimentalism of Jacques Rohault goes beyond the epistemological boundaries set up by Descartes, as signifies a new direction that will ultimately eclipse the Cartesian school of thought. In the case of Claude Gadroys, I present a concrete example of the exploitation of the over generality of Cartesian principles. In so doing, I show that while Descartes’ experimentalism was intended to rule out the possibility of occult causes, he in fact created a system that allowed for them, only under a different guise.

Experts from different areas have highlighted the “return”, or “re-valorization" of astrology in the West. The diffusion of astrological phenomenon also did not go unnoticed by Brazilian anthropologists. The astrology, as a quotidian experience of life, diffuses more and more in various aspects of Brazilian culture. Given such an emergency, with this research, wewant to lean over on the theme. This dissertation aims to analyze the symbolic dimensions of astrology expressed in interpersonal relations and in organization of everyday life of individuals that living in Recife. The investigation was constructed from observations started in 2010 with the collaboration of researchers, members from Interdisciplinary Nucleus about Imaginary Research and from Anthropology Post-Graduate Program of UFPE.Our research was based on semi structured interviews, as well as observations of courses and lectures about astrology, and informal conversations. In the 2010-2011 period, interviews were conducted with five astrologers and ten students interested in astrology. In order to analyze this material was used the methodology formulated by the French anthropologist Gilbert Durand: the myth criticism. This method of literary criticism, criticism of the speech, makes it possible to understand the mythical character inherent in the meaning of any report.Based on authors such as Jung, Bachelard, Mircea Eliade, Gilbert Durand, Maffesoli, and the Dictionary of Symbols by Chevalier and Gheerbrant, we propose to interpret symbols and mythemes raised, revealing their meanings and their relationship with culture. We believe that this study has revealed not only the symbolic universe of the experience of astrology in Recife, but also contributed to greater understanding of the theme in the Brazilian context.

Cecco vs. Dante: Correcting the Comedy with Applied Astrology

Fabian, Seth January 2014 (has links)
Cecco d'Ascoli (1269?-1327), was burned at the stake in Florence as a heretic on 16 September, 1327. The Inquisitor also set aflame his texts: a Latin textbook on astronomy and Acerba, a 4867 verse "scientific epic" written in his particular Italian vernacular. The Inquisitor also banned the possession of either text on pain of excommunication. Despite the ban, the texts survived and even flourished. However, Acerba never engaged the public to the extent that the tragedy suffered by the text's author has. For almost seven hundred years, this "anti-Comedy" has gone largely uninterrupted due to the difficulty of the language, an enigmatic hybrid of several vernaculars, and due to the difficulty of the content, technical medieval science written in verse by an author habituated to syncopating his arguments for a university audience familiar with the material. In this dissertation, I provide a reading of the two most difficult chapters, Acerba I.i and I.ii, where Cecco sets forth his system of "applied astrology" that serves as a General Unifying Theorem to explain all phenomena in the cosmos. In Acerba, Cecco presents a cosmos bound tightly together by principles of interactions that I term "applied astrology", his Grand Unifying Theorem that unites God, angels and humanity. Just as twentieth and now twenty-first century physics tries to find a "Theory of Everything" that can account for both quantum mechanics and general relativity, theories that seem mutually exclusive, Cecco's intellectual goal was to unite a theory of causative astral influences and independent human intellects. The crux of the problem is this: if we believe that astral influences alter earthly life, how can we claim that we, as humans, are independent agents? Cecco wants to account for astral influences, which he sees as a link between man and God, and save free will, and this forms the base of his ethical theories expounded throughout Acerba but especially in Acerba I.i and I.ii. These chapters are thus key to understanding the entire work. To arrive at an understanding Acerba requires a summation of Cecco's life, an understanding of the intellectual and cultural stakes in his work and a thorough knowledge of his scholastic commentaries in Latin. These, written specifically to make medieval astronomy comprehensible to fourteenth-century undergraduates, are a clear prose exposition of the same "system of everything" that he sets out in Acerba. Before I approach the poem, I will review the content of his Latin prose. Once the basic features of his applied-astrological system are understood, we will then be in a position to understand this notoriously difficult text and examine the merits of Cecco's solution to the problem of free will and material determinism.

This study aimed to investigate how art influences to strengthen the emotional bonds of users of Psychosocial Care Center of Children and Youth (Centro de Atenção Psicossocial Infantojuvenil – CAPS-i) in Pelotas, a Southern Brazilian town. The CAPS-i is a public institution of mental health service maintained by Pelotas’ City Hall whose mission is to develop a supported work on new guidelines for compliance with children and young people community suffering from severe mental disorders. This work was developed within art workshops of CAPS-i, with a qualitative approach, through artistic and corporal practices. It was used a cartographic method, which led not only to analyze the data produced by users of the service in a rhizomatic (Gilles Deleuze) way, but also to follow investigative processes and the very implications of the researcher. Data collection began in the first half of 2015 through interviews, observations were carried out in the Reference Centers for Mental Health of Rio Grande do Sul (Centros de Referência em Saúde Mental do Rio Grande do Sul). This production occurred between September to December of 2015 by the workshops Pandora's Box and Minotauro, in which the myths talk about feelings, a chance for children to try them in a playful way through body language. The workshop Imagens do Inconsciente (Images of the Unconscious) enabled a study about mandalas and astrology which promoted subjectivities in the group, experienced through body, a symbolic language of affection. To carry out these workshops I contemplated the knowledge of Carl Gustav Jung and Nise da Silveira, authors who for a long time investigated the relationships between the processes taking place in the unconscious and the feelings of people in psychological distress. João Francisco Duarte Jr. is attentive to the importance of a sensitivity education. He reforces that a society cannot be focused only on pure reason; the artistic experience enables the creation of broader knowledge and expertise related to human feelings. Studies of Felix Guattari contributed to think the workshops in order to add knowledge and expertise through a diverse group of mothers and children. The research resulted in the creation of the “Expressão do Sensível, Pais e Filhos" (Expression of the sensitive: parents and children) workshop already under development in the CAPS-i. The research results contribute to rethink the care practices in the area of mental health, in addition to reaffirming the art as promoting overall health, body, mind and spirit.
