[en] TRANSLATION, ETHICS AND SUBVERSION: PRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL CHALLENGES / [pt] TRADUÇÃO, ÉTICA E SUBVERSÃO: DESAFIOS PRÁTICOS E TEÓRICOS

MARCELLE DE SOUZA CASTRO 25 October 2007 (has links)
[en] This paper was developed in the context of the discussion about the identification of boundaries in translation practice. Taking into account the postmodern theories of language, I try to understand whether it is possible to define, even in face of new conceptions of language, culture, subject and translation, reasonably stable characteristics of the translation practice. Some rewriting practices presented as traslations, but which, in my opinion, subvert excessively the original text pose a challenge for the definition of such boundaries. In this thesis, I analize three different translation projects which openly uphold a particular political agenda, in order to verify to which extent they are distanced from the definition of translation as the closest possible representation of a foreign text in a target language. The projects studied here are: feminist translations, postcolonial translations and Lawrence Venuti´s minoritizing project. This analysis aims at understanding the ethical and political motivations of the projects at issue and their main strategies. The pursuit of a specific conceptual and practical field for translation is linked to an ethical concern at which the reader is the focus of the discussion.

[en] TRANSLATION,TRANSFORMATION AND AUTHORSHIP: COPYRIGHTS AND TRANSLATION STUDIES / [pt] TRADUÇÃO, TRANSFORMAÇÃO E AUTORIA: O DIREITO AUTORAL E OS ESTUDOS DA TRADUÇÃO

DANIELA ROLIM DE ANDRADE 01 November 2012 (has links)
[en] The present dissertation analyses a legal concept: that literary, artistic and scientific translations involve an act of transformation and, for that reason, consist in an authorial (re)writing. It briefly shows the influence of the Enlightenment and Romanticism on the consolidation of the authorial rights on the nineteenth century, when the concept of original work (or originality) became central in the copyright laws. In dialogue with Lawrence Venuti, an important translation theorist, it also examines whether the centrality of the original work in the copyright legislation really contributed to obscure translation and consequently cause the translator’s invisibility. The present dissertation also tries to find basis for the idea of translation as transformation through the interaction of philosophy and linguistic studies, still exploring this subject in a very introductory manner. In this part of the work, it is also suggested that the formulation of a new concept of language, at the end of 18th century, might have been very relevant to the idea of translation as transformation, influencing the laws of that time.

[en] TRANSLATION CRITICISM IN THEORY AND PRACTICE: THE CASE OF VERSÃO BRASILEIRA / [pt] A CRÍTICA DE TRADUÇÕES NA TEORIA E NA PRÁTICA: O CASO DA VERSÃO BRASILEIRA

REGYSANE BOTELHO CUTRIM ALVES 12 August 2009 (has links)
[en] This thesis aims at better understanding translation criticism in theory and practice. In order to achieve this goal, it presents the translation evaluation models developed by Katharina Reiss, Juliane House and Antoine Berman and, afterwards, it analyses the literary translation critiques that are published in the column Versão Brasileira by Língua Portuguesa magazine. To enrich the proposed study some literary critiques that were published in Brazil before the magazine are briefly described. Commentaries written by Gabriel Perissé, author of Versão Brasileira, discuss translation issues and indicate that this kind of criticism can be done with quality in the journalistic environment, in spite of time and space limitations. The critiques in the column answer several aspects from the theoretical guidelines that have worked as the analysis parameters; besides this, they are innovative in so far as they invite the reader to participate in the criticism developed in each column.

[en] THE ROLE OF TRANSLATION IN THE TRANSMISSION OF SCIENCE: THE CASE OF PTOLEMYS TETRABIBLOS / [pt] O PAPEL DA TRADUÇÃO NA TRANSMISSÃO DA CIÊNCIA: O CASO DO TETRABIBLOS DE PTOLOMEU

CRISTINA DE AMORIM MACHADO 13 April 2010 (has links)
[en] This dissertation presents a history of translations of a founding text from the Hellenistic astrological canon: Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos, which was written in Greek, in Alexandria (2nd century A.D.). It is generally assumed that science is transmitted intact along the years, thus grounding the authority of scientific texts and their authors. Translation is rarely remembered in the history of science, and when it happens, it usually plays a secondary role. Nevertheless the transmission of science always implies some kind of rewriting. Therefore the hypothesis here proposed is that Tetrabiblos, as all ancient scientific books which reached us, has pilgrimaged and constantly changed through time and space, revealing its historical feature. Scientific authors and texts are historical constructs, and the latter are handed down in form of rewritten vestiges, linguistically or spatiotemporally separated from the original writings to some extent. That pilgrimage through several languages and cultures has set up what we can call Ptolemy’s manuscripted and printed textual tradition. It is to this movable tradition that we will refer to historicize the origins and processes of transmission of Tetrabiblos from Antiquity to Renaissance. It is a biography of Ptolemy’s astrological book, regarding the amalgam between astrology and astronomy at that time and the extensive circulation of this knowledge across the Hellenistic period, the Arabic world and the Iberical context, especially its repercussion during the maritime expansionism.

[en] NATIVE LANGUAGE AND TRANSLATION IN NON-NATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING: A CRITICAL HISTORIOGRAPHY / [pt] A LÍNGUA MATERNA E A TRADUÇÃO NO ENSINO-APRENDIZAGEM DE LÍNGUA NÃO-MATERNA: UMA HISTORIOGRAFIA CRÍTICA

ELISA FIGUEIRA DE SOUZA CORREA 14 April 2015 (has links)
[en] The motivation to write this dissertation came from my personal experience teaching Portuguese as a foreign language (PFL) at Hebei University, in China. Due to communication difficulties with my students – since neither could I speak Mandarin, nor could they speak Portuguese – and frustrated in face of the hegemonic orientation towards a monolingual classroom, I ve decided to analyze this situation. The development of this analysis forms the pillar of the present investigation, together with a need not to forbid native language (NL) or the common language (in that case, English) use in classroom. As a result, a critical historiography, along with an analysis procedure based in questions on if, how, when and by whom NL and translation were used, and also questions related to which social values or objectives were behind non-native language (NNL) leaning, at each moment or method analyzed. In addition, a terminological-conceptual review on the pedagogical uses of translation is presented. Based on such a historiography, it is proposed a break away from the pro-monolingualism orientation in classroom, which has prevailed since the early 20th century. The cognitive and affective need of NL in classroom, of both teacher and pupils, is one of the reasons found to currently justify the use of LM and translation exercises (also known as pedagogical translation) as resources in NNL teaching – as well as the defense of translation practice, in its postmodern understanding. Translation practice, in such terms, is understood as a triple-faced resource: (1) it is a fifth skill to be targeted by NNL teaching; (2) it raises language awareness in students, specially contrasting NL and NNL; (3) it is a byproduct of teaching and learning principles which, by accepting a postmethod condition, aim at adopting varied tools to enrich both classroom environment and learning experience. The careful consideration that translation practice provokes is understood as awaking students to the nature of language, and to political and cultural issues that involve language and society as well. This dissertation upholds its arguments in favor of these two resources – NL and pedagogical translation – with data from other researches and statements from students and teachers on the subject. It concludes in favor of these resources and against the hegemony of the monolingual classroom, which is still thought to be the ideal NNL classroom environment for the common sense, and for several educational policies.

[pt] O JOGO DA AVALIAÇÃO: UM ESTUDO PRÁTICO SOBRE TRADUÇÃO AUTOMÁTICA / [en] THE ASSESSMENT GAME: A PRACTICAL STUDY ON MACHINE TRANSLATION

17 July 2019 (has links)
[en] This work discusses translation assessment practices, most importantly machine translation (MT) assessment. Relevant literature for MT assessment is discussed, from MT systems assessment to the design of error typologies for MT assessment. The study encompasses a series of three MT quality assessment experiments based on the language games as described by Wittgenstein in his work Philosophical Investigations. Game 1 encompassed post-editing two patent documents using different MT systems, and further evaluating translator s productivity and analyzing the edits made. The quantitative results showed the positive impact of using MT in productivity. The qualitative results included a typology of the edits made during the PE task in both MT systems, and the results achieved showed that increased productivity did not affect translation quality level. Game 2 compares two translations of the same text produced several years apart by the same translator. The former was produced using a CAT tool; the latter, a TA system. Both served as the basis for discussing the quality of translations produced in different systems and under different work conditions. Game 3 compares the post-edited documents produced in the PE task of Game 1 to the actual patent documents as filed in Brazil s Patent Office (INPI) in order to evaluate the impact of MT over the quality of post-edited documents. The results of both games 2 and 3 pointed to a superior quality of the post-edited translations of the present study over translations produced in professional contexts.

[en] AUTOMATIC TRANSLATION IN TRANSLATION MEMORY SYSTEMS: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TWO WORK METHODS / [pt] TRADUÇÃO AUTOMÁTICA EM AMBIENTES DE MEMÓRIA DE TRADUÇÃO: UM ESTUDO COMPARATIVO DE DOIS MÉTODOS DE TRABALHO

JORGE MARIO DAVIDSON 26 October 2021 (has links)
[en] This dissertation addresses the use of automatic translation in translation memory systems (CAT), a fast-growing modality of work in today s specialized translation market. An experimental study was conducted with four professional translators specializing in the field of computing. Each professional translated two texts, one about technology marketing and the other, a highly technical document, using different modalities of work. The purpose of the study was to identify any differences resulting from the use of automatic translation, with segment-based post-editing, and the use of automatic translation as sub-segment translation suggestions. The resources of computational linguistics were employed to analyze the translations, considering the following metrics: lexical diversity, lexical density, edit distance, taking into account grammatical sequences, and productivity. For comparative purposes, the experimental study included 100 percent human translations and automatic translations that were not submitted to post-editing. The metrics employed turned out differing results attributable to the modalities of work, and allowed for the comparison of the effects on the different types of texts translated. Finally, the multiple translations of one of the texts were submitted to the evaluation of the readers, to determine their preferences.

[en] BECAUSE THEY LOOK LIKE GIRLS OR ACT LIKE GIRLS: ERASURE OF NON-BINARY IDENTITIES IN TRANSLATIONS OF THE HOUSEKI NO KUNI MANGA / [pt] PORQUE ELAS APARENTAM SER MENINAS OU AGEM COMO MENINAS: APAGAMENTO DE IDENTIDADES NÃO-BINÁRIAS EM TRADUÇÕES DO MANGÁ HOUSEKI NO KUNI

FELIPE DUARTE PINHEIRO 27 April 2021 (has links)
[en] The research entitled Because they look like girls or act like girls: erasure of non-binary identities in translations of the Houseki no kuni manga analyzes five translations of the referred manga - two professional translations, one into English and one into French ; and three amateur translations, one into Portuguese, one into Spanish and one into English - and how they dealt with the non-binary gender of the characters. The objective was to examine the ways in which cis-heteronormative ideologies and hegemonic translation ideologies can lead to the erasure of LGBTQAI (plus) identities. The analysis of the data showed that all the translations to Neo-Latin languages, as well as the amateur translation into English designated a gender to the characters. In the case of Neo-Latin languages, the analysis of meta and paratexts suggests that the grammatical gender of these languages played an important role in erasing the non-binary gender of the characters. However, there was also evidence of the influence of cis-heteronormative ideologies in the choice of translation strategies employed. Among the translations analyzed, only the professional translation into English did not designate a gender to the characters. However, the analysis of metatextual sources revealed that translation ideologies related to the idea of fluency were behind the translation strategies used, resulting in a translation that maintains the non-binary gender of the characters, but does not make it visible. By studying the cis-heteronormative and translation ideologies that underlie the translation strategies employed, this research contributes to understand how LGBTQAI (plus) identities can be easily erased in translations and propose ways to make them visible in order to fight cis-heteronormative hegemony.

[en] TRANSLATION AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF CULTURAL IMAGES: CONCEIÇÃO EVARISTO’S PONCIÁ VICÊNCIO, AND ITS TRANSLATION INTO ENGLISH / [pt] A TRADUÇÃO E A CONSTRUÇÃO DE IMAGENS CULTURAIS: PONCIÁ VICÊNCIO, DE CONCEIÇÃO EVARISTO, E SUA TRADUÇÃO PARA O INGLÊS

MARCELA IOCHEM VALENTE 18 July 2014 (has links)
[en] This doctoral dissertation analyzes the translation process of Conceição Evaristo’s Ponciá Vicêncio (2003) into English. This novel, written by an Afro-Brazilian writer, was translated by Paloma Martinez-Cruz and published in the United States in 2007, by Host Publications. Considering that translation is not merely an interlingual process, but it also involves many cultural issues, in addition to the fact that the systemic place occupied by a certain work in its source culture is not necessarily repeated in the target culture due to political, social and cultural differences, this research seeks to understand the systemic places occupied by Evaristo and her work both in the Brazilian and American cultural polysystems. This study takes into account aspects such as the motivation to perform the translation of this work, the expected audience, some translation strategies, the distribution and the critical reception of Ponciá Vicêncio in the source and target cultures, as well as the systemic places occupied by the writer and her work in the cultural polysystems of origin and reception. This analysis clarifies some questions such as to what extent this insertion can change the image of Brazilian literature/culture in the North-American polysystem, and the possible impact that Evaristo’s image in the US may have on the position she occupies in the Brazilian literary polysystem – or even in the recent establishment of an Afro-Brazilian literary system. The study of the process of insertion of Conceição Evaristo in the American literary polysystem via translation was informed by the polysystem theory, as proposed by Itamar Even-Zohar, the Descriptive Translation Studies – DTS, especially the ideas of Gideon Toury and André Lefevere, the Cultural Studies, which have led to the articulation of translation studies, gender studies and post-colonial studies, and some ideas by Lawrence Venuti on the generation and manipulation of cultural images. The methodological model proposed by Lambert and Van Gorp also served as an instrument to this research, considering that we analyze aspects such as language, the two systemic contexts involved, some critical texts and the actions of patronage .

[en] FERNANDO PESSOA AS A TRANSLATOR / [pt] FERNANDO PESSOA COMO TRADUTOR

JULIANA CUNHA MENEZES 04 February 2014 (has links)
[en] The present thesis aims to verify what kind of translator, from English into Portuguese, Fernando Pessoa was. In order to achieve this goal, I read Arnaldo Saraiva’s book Fernando Pessoa: poeta-tradutor de poetas (1999), and analyzed the meter, rhyme scheme, rhythm and meaning, as well as the diverse stylistic devices in Percy Bysshe Shelley’s To a skylark, Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Catarina to Camoens, Frank Marzials’s The last metamorphosis of Mephistopheles, and in Fernando Pessoa’s translations of these poems. The methodology adopted can be found in Britto (2002, 2004, 2006a, 2006b, 2006c, 2008a, 2008b), and its goal is to identify the characteristics of the original poem which are poetically significant; to assign a priority to each characteristic, depending on its higher or lower contribution to the total aesthetic effect of the poem; and to verify whether the translator was able to re-create the characteristics considered the most significant among the ones which can effectively be re-created – in other words, to verify whether the translator was able to find correspondences for them. For these analyses, I used the terminologies in Abrams et al. (1974), Fraser (1977), Hollander (1989) and Fussell (1979) for the originals; and in Chociay (1974), Mattoso (2010) and Proença (1955) for the translations. Issues that pervade the discussions of poetic translation, such as fidelity, were also taken into account.
