[pt] A OBRA DE BEN JONSON EM CONTEXTO BRASILEIRO: OF AN AGE OU FOR ALL TIME? / [en] THE WORKS OF BEN JONSON IN THE BRAZILIAN CONTEXT: OF AN AGE OR FOR ALL TIME?AMANDA FIORANI BARRETO 30 May 2022 (has links)
(BUTLER e RICKARD, 2020; DONALDSON, 2012; SANTOS, 2016).
(2009; 2010); à perspectiva de Linda Hutcheon (2013) acerca do conceito de adaptação;
cultural brasileiro. / [en] The present thesis aims to discuss the works of Ben Jonson (1572-1637) in
Brazil, providing a broad overview of the presence of the author in the Brazilian literary
and cultural system. To that end, it contemplates translations and adaptations, as well
as performances and appropriations of his works, underscoring Jonson s only published
works in Brazilian Portuguese: a translation of Volpone, or The Fox (1606) by Newton
Belleza (1977) and an adaptation of the same play to prose, by Ganymédes José (1987).
Moreover, it encompasses the contextualization of Jonson s life and works, in addition
to his critical reception in posterity. This thesis is inserted in the interface between
Translations Studies, employing concepts from Translation Historiography
(D HULST, 2010; PYM, 2014; VENUTI, 2008), and Literary Studies, more
specifically the field that relates to early modern English theater (BUTLER and
RICKARD, 2020; DONALDSON, 2012; SANTOS, 2016). Besides these broader
areas, this work makes use of the notions of reception and rewriting (WILLIS, 2017;
LEFEVERE, 2007); Gérard Genette s (2009; 2010) theory of paratexts; Linda
Hutcheon s (2013) perspective on the concept of adaptation; and Julie Sanders (2006)
reflections on adaptations and appropriations. It works, also, with documental evidence
for the cataloguing of performances, together with the mapping of the reception and
contextualization of Ben Jonson in the Brazilian literary, theatrical, and cultural
system.

[pt] A POESIA DE W. H. AUDEN: TRADUÇÃO E CRÍTICA / [en] THE POETRY OF W. H. AUDEN: TRANSLATION AND CRITICISMALEXANDRE BRUNO TINELLI 15 June 2021 (has links)
[en] In this master s thesis on translation and poetry criticism, the main goal is to translate four poems by W. H. Auden (1907-1973) and to comment on the translations, revealing the translation strategies adopted. In this way, one portrait of important aspects of Auden s aesthetic project is sketched, considering questions of poetic form and the relations that his work establishes with the tradition of Western poetry. The poems translated reveal distinct phases of Auden s production and span a significant part of his life. The study begins with As I Walked Out One Evening and Musée des Beaux Arts, written and published in the late 1930s, when, in search of a new style, to escape the obscurity of his early poems, Auden experimented with popular forms of English poetry, such as the ballad, and with modern forms, such as free verse, accommodating them to his view of poetry. This is followed by The Age of Anxiety: A Baroque Eclogue, one of Auden s major long poems, written in the manner of Old English verse during World War II and published in 1947. It closes with In Praise of Limestone, one of Auden s first Italian poems, composed in syllabic verse, written in 1948 and published in book form in 1951. Since some of the poems translated in this work have relatively well-established translations, these translations are also analyzed along the way. The method employed is based on poetry translation theory and practice of the brothers Haroldo and Augusto de Campos and Paulo Henriques Britto.

[en] AND I M A ROSE!: THE ROLE OF REWRITERS AND PATRONS IN THE INTRODUCTION OF EMILY DICKINSON INTO THE BRAZILIAN LITERARY SYSTEM / [pt] E EIS-ME UMA ROSA!: O PAPEL DOS AGENTES DE REESCRITA E PATRONAGEM NA INSERÇÃO DE EMILY DICKINSON NO SISTEMA LITERÁRIO BRASILEIROLUCIANA VASCONCELLOS P DE MENDONCA 28 December 2020 (has links)
[en] The purpose of this thesis is to identify and analyze the main rewriting and patronage agents which contributed to the introduction and dissemination of Emily Dickinson s work in the Brazilian literary system, starting in 1928 with Manuel Bandeira s first translation up to this day. The research was informed by Itamar Even-Zohar s Polysystems Theory (1997 [1990], 2005); André Lefevere s concept of rewriting and patronage (1990, 1992); Pierre Bourdieu s notions of economic, cultural, and symbolic capital, instrumental to analyze the profile of Dickinson s translators; and Gérard Genette s Paratext Theory (2009), to discuss the presentation of the poet and her work to Brazilian readers. We found that Dickinson s poems, though they had been translated into Portuguese in the early 1900 s, gained greater repercussion since the middle of the century when Cecília Meireles s translation of I died for Beauty, in 1954, was included in an anthology of foreign poetry and widely disseminated in the country; and when the publication of The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, edited by Thomas H. Johnson, in a careful Harvard edition, in 1955, recovered Dickinson s poems in full, without the corrections of her former editors, and resulted in the resignification of her work both in the U.S. literary polysystem and the Brazilian one. It is worth mentioning the translations of Dickinson s poems by Haroldo de Campos, Augusto de Campos, and Décio Pignatari, founders of the Concrete Movement, which intended to draw attention to the formal aspects of poetry, and not just to its semantic content. The expansion of Translation Studies, which led to the emergence of new theories, approaches, methods, and concepts, thus broadening the prospects for the study of poetry translation, combined with the performance of rewriters and patrons and with well-produced paratexts, has also greatly contributed to the introduction and dissemination of Dickinson s poetry in Brazil.

[pt] DIFERENÇAS ENTRE PROCESSOS DE TRADUÇÃO E DE INTERPRETAÇÃO CONSIDERANDO LÍNGUAS ORAIS E LÍNGUAS DE SINAIS: O PAPEL DO MATERIAL GUIA / [en] DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING PROCESSES CONSIDERING ORAL LANGUAGES AND SIGN LANGUAGES: THE ROLE OF THE GUIDE MATERIALDAFNY SALDANHA HESPANHOL VITAL 01 June 2023 (has links)
[en] Traditionally, translation and interpreting are differentiated in terms of
speaking and writing (PAGURA, 2015; MUNDAY, 2016), which excludes video
translations into Brazilian Sign Language (Libras). This research aims to elucidate
the differences between translation and interpretating, without relying solely on the
record of the final product or the source text. Considering discussions about support
(RODRIGUES, 2018; SOUZA, 2021), the concept of writing and speaking
(SOUZA, 2021), Kade s definitions (apud POCHHACKER, 2016, 2018) for
translation and interpretation, and researches that focus on translations into Libras
on video (SILVÉRIO et. al., 2012; CARNEIRO, VITAL and SOUZA, 2020;
PYFERS, 1999; GALASSO et. al., 2018), the following defining criteria for
translation processes (translation or interpretating) were selected, which include
both sign languages and oral languages: time for textual planning, presentation of
the source text, work rhythm, external support, work method, refinement of the
target text, necessary skills and abilities, guide material used, unintentional
disfluencies, multimodal resources as translation solutions and cognitive efforts
triggered at the time of filming. Bibliometric analysis was carried out on different
databases, as well as the analysis of 7 videos, available on the ViaLibras website.
The guide material used and the unintentional disfluencies point to different
cognitive efforts that are activated simultaneously in typical translation processes.
So that is a fundamental criterion in the differentiation of processes. A guide
material that recovers all the translation decisions made before filming was of
particular importance in defining typical sign language translation processes. It is
hoped that the work can contribute to the training of Libras translators and
interpreters.

Lambert e Van Gorp, o trabalho articula alguns conflitos linguísticos, culturais e
chegada. / [en] The research aims to analyze the ethical-political effects of choices made by me
for the translation of the historical novel The Exiles, by Christina Baker Kline
(2020). It focuses on the tension between the perpetuation of a historical
domination and the possibility of social reparation, based on the theory of
invisibility and on the definitions of domesticating and foreignizing translation, by
Lawrence Venuti, on the concept of habitus, by Pierre Bourdieu, and theoretical
positions on historical reliability by Anthony Pym. Adopting the microtextual
approach proposed by Lambert and Van Gorp as a research methodology, the work
articulates some linguistic, cultural and ideological conflicts faced in this
particular instance of literary translation and how such translation choices point to
different directions of reception in the target language.

[en] MACHINE TRANSLATION EVALUATION FOR THE SOFTWARE LOCALIZATION INDUSTRY: A CASE STUDY / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO DE TRADUÇÃO AUTOMÁTICA NO MERCADO DE LOCALIZAÇÃO DE SOFTWARE: UM ESTUDO DE CASOGABRIELA CASTELO BRANCO RIBEIRO 04 October 2006 (has links)
software. A fim de contribuir para essa iniciativa
pioneira no país, propomos uma
avaliação do programa, enfocando as implicações da
utilização desta tecnologia
no processo de localização de software. Empregamos a
taxonomia proposta pelo
FEMTI (Framework for the Evaluation of Machine Translation
in ISLE),
considerados aspectos
complementar a análise lingüística, apresentamos outros
características próprias do domínio e do
tipo de texto. / [en] This study was motivated by the trial implementation of a
machine
translation engine by a multinational software
localization company. In order to
contribute to this innovative experiment in the Brazilian
market, we evaluate the
engine, focusing on the implications of its implementation
in the software
localization industry. We use the FEMTI (Framework for the
Evaluation of
Machine Translation in ISLE) taxonomy, which is based on
the ISO/IEC
guidelines for software evaluation. Operational aspects,
such as the engine s
integration with translation memory tools, are taken into
consideration, as well as
language issues. Our evaluation is based on the machine
translated version of a
mobile phone user guide. In addition to the language
problems common to most
machine translation engines currently available, we
analyze issues related to the
user interface, particularly to the phone menus. These
problems are discussed as
examples of each related FEMTI topic and we suggest
solutions whenever
possible. To add to our language evaluation, we present
three other studies
dedicated to Portuguese. Our results indicate the engine
can be successful in this
industry mainly in terms of domain restriction and
localization workflow
procedures. Its success depends on its integration to
translation memory tools and
requires relatively little investment in updating the
language resources (rules and
dictionaries) to reflect the language characteristics
specific to domain and text
type.

[en] TRANSLATION FOR SUBTITLES: A PROPOSED SYLLABUS FOR TRANSLATOR EDUCATION / [pt] TRADUÇÃO PARA LEGENDAS: UMA PROPOSTA PARA A FORMAÇÃO DE PROFISSIONAISSABRINA LOPES MARTINEZ 05 October 2007 (has links)
A presente dissertação
proposta aqui apresentada
atividade. A reflexão
desenvolvida contempla questões metodológicas e de
conteúdo e aborda as
peculiaridades que caracterizam a tradução para legendas,
procurando oferecer
ambos. / [en] The television subtitling market suffers from a shortage
of professionals,
as has been attested by twelve years of personal
experience in the industry. The
purpose of this research was to investigate the reasons
behind this shortage and
suggest the basis for implementing a course program on
subtitling for TV from a
descriptive and polysystemic perspective on translation
and a poststructuralist
view on education. The proposal presented was based on a
list of competencies
and abilities every subtitle translator must develop,
elaborated from interviews
with important actors in the translation for subtitles
polysystem, and on the
analysis of the norms, constraints and control mechanisms
with which the subtitler
must deal in his or her professional capacity. The
considerations brought forth
contemplate methodological and content issues and tackle
the peculiarities of
subtitling, aiming to offer an alternative to the emphasis
on training rather than on
education which is usually associated with most courses
currently available. Thus,
this dissertation intends to guarantee a greater
interchange between university and
industry, which should bring about benefits for both.

[en] ANALYSIS OF STRATEGIES USING MODEL CHECKING / [pt] ANÁLISE DE ESTRATÉGIAS UTILIZANDO VERIFICAÇÃO FORMAL DE MODELOSDAVI ROMERO DE VASCONCELOS 29 December 2003 (has links)
Atualmente, a
linguagem lógica denominada de Game Analysis Logic (GAL);
Analyzed using RollGame). Assim, a presente dissertação
[en] In formal methods, one of the approaches that have been
successful lately is Model Checking, which consists in a
technique to achieve automatic verification about a system
behavior. Nowadays, the model checking is very frequently
employed in computer science to formal verification of
software and hardware, but it is not used in other
knowledge fields, such as mathematics and economics. The
purpose of this research is to apply model checking in
economics problems, using Game Theory. Some inadequacies
have been observed. Therefore, it is necessary to create
new definitions: a generic and qualitative definition of
game that uses one logic language called Game Analysis
Logic (GAL); a new language to describe game called
RollGame (Romero + All Game); a translation from RollGame
to a language of model specification; a translation from
game definition to Kripke structure. It is also been
observed that the use of model checking makes it possible
to analyze players strategies. One tool, called
StratAn-RollGame (Strategy Analyzed using RollGame), makes
the translation from RollGame to model Checking automatic.
Thus, the present research has demonstrated that is
possible indeed to use model checking in other knowledge
fields.

[en] FROM ARTISANSHIP TO INDUSTRY: THE GLOBALIZED TRANSLATION: AUTHORING, SOURCE TEXT, TRANSLATOR AND TARGET TEXT IN THE INFORMATION ERA / [pt] DE ARTESANATO A INDÚSTRIA: A TRADUÇÃO GLOBALIZADA: AUTORIA, TEXTO DE PARTIDA, TRADUTOR E TEXTO DE CHEGADA NA ERA DA INFORMAÇÃODANIEL ARGOLO ESTILL 11 December 2017 (has links)
[en] This study analyzes how, in the last forty years, translation has ceased to be an artisanal activity to become a billionaire industry and the voice of globalization. To develop this analysis, I discuss theoretical proposals from canonical authors for the establishment of a historiography and of a sociology of
translation, and some aspects of systemic and functional lines of translation studies. Based on these ideas, I suggest some theoretical and methodological adaptations to update the concept of translation as a protagonist in the globalized world, focusing on specialized translation. After a brief analysis of the conceptual history of translation, taking in account recent changes in its practices, I conclude by showing how these transformations became more visible in the concepts of authoring, source text, translator and target text, considering the technology used in each one of these four elements as the materialization of these transformations, with special attention to translation-specific technologies.

[en] THE PARTNERSHIP PUZZLE: BRAZILIAN SOUTH-SOUTH COOPERATION IN HEALTH DEVELOPMENT / [pt] O ENIGMA DA PARCERIA: A COOPERAÇÃO SUL-SUL BRASILEIRA NO DESENVOLVIMENTO DA SAÚDEMANAIRA ANAITE CHARLOTTE ASSUNCAO 10 April 2017 (has links)
[en] Significant changes happened in the field of international development with the turn of the millennium, particularly with the entrance of new actors who claim alternative cooperation modalities and models. The South-South Development cooperation (SSDC) providers assume that the shared experience between developing countries enables common policy solutions. Arguably, this affirmation authorizes the establishment of horizontal development partnerships. The relations between the agents in the field confine a set of positions, among them the donor position and the position of SSDC provider. The partnership comprises the position in which cooperation providers and beneficiaries overlap. Departing from the Brazilian development practices in the health sector, the research explores the Brazilian Health Expert Community (BHEC) and its structuring cooperation approach. The partnership position is articulated through the internationalization of knowledge and training of the health agents disseminating a coherent representation on how national healthcare systems should be structured. Nevertheless, the health partnership Brazil-Mozambique and the case of the ARV factory illustrate how the partnership and the principle of horizontality are challenged. Despite the role Brazilian experts and their institutions have in establishing a transnational community, once the Mozambican health experts occupy a different position than that of partner, the resulting socio-political space is not a one-way street of knowledge transfer. SSDC produces a space of strategic translations, in which agents compete for the meanings about health and the consequent development of policies in the sector.
