[en] HERE ARE YOU: ASTROLOGY AS A SYSTEM OF COHERENCE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF SMALL AND LARGE NARRATIVES / [pt] EIS VOCÊ: A ASTROLOGIA COMO SISTEMA DE COERÊNCIA NA CONSTRUÇÃO DE PEQUENAS E GRANDES NARRATIVASMILENA LEPSCH DA COSTA 16 August 2018 (has links)
[en] In modernity, where relationships are defined as liquid (BAUMAN, 2005, 2006), this paper seeks from the standpoint of narrative analysis (BASTOS; BIAR, 2015), the popularity / productivity of astrology, especially in the construction of an essentializing discourse on identity. For this, I present 22 research interviews (MISHLER, 1986) on the subject, carried out with students from PUC- Rio from 2016 to 2017, in which a considerable amount of small histories and life stories emerge (LINDE, 1993), analyzed here qualitatively and interpretatively. I understand narrative as an important tool for the construction of meaning in the social world (BASTOS; BIAR, 2015) and for the formation of autobiographical identities (BRUNER, 1990; MOITA LOPES, 2001). In these terms, I observe which discursive strategies the interviewees use to build stories about themselves / others, striving to present themselves in the best possible way in this theater (GOFFMAN, 2002 (1959), 2011 (1967), 2013 (1979)), which is the research interview. It is noted that many of these stories are stitched from the system of coherence of astrology (LINDE, 1993). That is, the interviewees construct accounts (DE FINA, 2009) or cause-and-effect relationships, with the purpose of claiming some assumption (BLOCK, 2012) in discourse, especially for behaviors considered socially negative. In this way, signs, in relieving narrators of agency, act in the face work (GOFFMAN, 2011(1967)), collaborating for the favorable presentation of the interviewees.

[en] IT WAS ALREADY A VEILED PERSECUTION: AN INTERACTIONIST PERSPECTIVE OF HOMOPHOBIC DISCRIMINATION NARRATIVES IN THE MILITARY CONTEXT / [pt] JÁ ERA UMA PERSEGUIÇÃO VELADA: NARRATIVAS DE DISCRIMINAÇÃO HOMOFÓBICA NO CONTEXTO MILITAR EM PERSPECTIVA INTERACIONISTAFLÁVIA CORREIA LIMA HUBER COSTA 07 April 2016 (has links)
[en] This paper investigates, through Narrative Analysis informed by Interactional Sociolinguistics, homophobic discrimination in the military context. The data presented here have been generated in interviews with nine Brazilian army officers, sergeants and enlisted, in the active and reserve service, who identify themselves as homosexual. The analysis, of a qualitative and interpretative nature, occurs within a micro-interactional perspective taking into consideration the narrative analysis theoretical framework as well as the notions of stigma and face. The results describe key structural and evaluative elements of such narratives that generally refer to disciplinary punishment events, humiliation and exclusion, which ultimately have a discriminatory motivation. In all narratives analyzed, a continuing effort of the participants in safeguarding their institution from the imputation of responsibility for the episodes of discrimination has been observed. The stigmatization processes and the presentation of self were also objects of analysis. The participants reconstruct their stories by means of resources such as the use of accounts and reported speeches. These resources justify events that could threaten their faces and give veracity to their stories. As far as the analysis of the stigma built and rejected in the research interview is concerned, it has been observed that the stigmatization processes of the gay identity occur in the dimension of the narrated stories, but not during the interaction between interviewer and interviewee. This research also presents ethnographic data to support linguistic and discursive interpretation. Finally, a discussion, through the voices of the interviewees themselves, about common sense discourse that discriminates and stigmatizes the gay military will be carried out. In addition to its theoretical commitments, the research aims to contribute as an applied tool to understand contexts in which the identity that individuals perform in their social lives have impact on their relationships as well as on their professional and institutional evaluations.

[pt] ENGAJAMENTO NARRATIVO E MITIGAÇÃO DA CULPA EM INTERROGATÓRIOS POLICIAIS DE UMA DELEGACIA DA MULHER / [en] NARRATIVE ENGAGEMENT AND GUILT MITIGATION IN POLICE INTERVIEWS AT A POLICE STATION SPECIALIZED IN CRIMES AGAINST WOMENDEBORA MARQUES 22 October 2015 (has links)
Analiticamente, lançamos mão de elementos do modelo narrativo laboviano – destacando dele a avaliação (sobretudo o discurso reportado) e a ação complicadora. / [en] In this thesis, we analyze the mitigation of guilt, discursively and interactionally co-constructed by police officers, suspects and victims in police interrogations that took place in a police station specializing in crimes against women. To this end, we adopt Narrative Analysis and contemporary Applied Linguistics constructionist perspective for qualitative research. In our analyses, we focus on the narrative, identity performances that emerge in the interactional work involved in attempting to mitigate guilt related to the crimes analyzed during interrogations. In this scenario, we show how narrative engagement plays an essential and constitutive role in this type of institutional, legal interaction. Analytically, we employ elements of Labov s narrative model – highlighting evaluations (particularly in reported speech) and complicating actions. This model shows itself to be a productive tool for understanding how stories are co-constructed by suspects and victims, and how they serve as a discursive, interactional means for attempting to mitigate agency and responsibility in order to seek to mitigate guilt. Suspects attempt to distance themselves, interactionally and discursively, from the confession of the crime being investigated in the police station, victimizing themselves by attributing responsibility for the aggressions to their wives/victims. Victims, on the other hand, seek to distance themselves from the responsibility attributed to them in the stories told by their partner/suspects. In this same perspective, our analyses show that the narrative engagement of the participants occurs as accounts (explanations), since suspects and victims use, interactionally, the stories they tell as a way of attempting to justify and account for their actions (in this thesis, these stories are called narrative accounts). Thus, we show that it is by telling stories and evaluating actions and characters in their own point of view that narrators – suspects and victims – construct confessions and testimonies, which are taken as facts in the legal environment. Moreover, we connect identity constructions, confessional work and the type of activity in progress, given that guilt and responsibility for crimes are co-constructed and negotiated in participants interactions. In view of the above, we emphasize that a better understanding of how agency and responsibility are mitigated discursively can contribute to the work of law enforcement officers, especially those who participate in investigative contexts.

[en] PROTESTANTISM AND BLACK IDENTITY UNDER A DISCURSIVE APPROACH: DILEMMAS AND POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS / [pt] PROTESTANTISMO E IDENTIDADE NEGRA SOB ENFOQUE NARRATIVO: DILEMAS E RELAÇÕES POSSÍVEISALEXANDRE FLORENCIO DOS SANTOS 03 May 2022 (has links)
[pt] A Tese intitulada Protestantismo e Identidade Negra sob enfoque
influenciado homens e mulheres – autodeclarados negros, evangélicos praticantes
essas comunidades religiosas. / [en] The thesis entitled Protestantism and Black Identity under a discursive
approach: Dilemmas and Possible Connections sought to investigate, first, to
what extent, or whether, the web of beliefs of the religious system under analysis
has influenced These Black men and women, who regularly attend church – in the
marking of differences (operated through symbolic systems of representation) that
produce their racial identities, considered here as a social, historical, cultural and
plural construction that implies the construction of an ethnic/racial group s view of
itself, based on the relationship with the other groups. Secondly, and with no
intention of in-depth reflections, this work aimed to reflect on some particularities
that would have favored North American Black Protestants to make use of the
religious sphere for greater engagement in sociopolitical issues. As for its
relevance, data from the last IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística)
Demographic Census indicate that between 2000 and 2010 the number of
evangelicals grew five times more than the Brazilian population, corresponding to
a total of 42.3 million people twenty-eight years old on average; Furthermore, the
data reveal that 53.9 percent of this total are Black people (2010). If we consider that
when we analyze what people say in the stories that emerge in the interviews we
can refer to broader sociocultural structures, the inquiry that generated this thesis
is aligned with the theoretical assumptions of Narrative Analysis - an Applied
Linguistics transdisciplinary discipline that draws on areas such as Sociology,
Anthropology, social Psychology and Language Studies. The main understandings
formulated after the conclusion of this work, which can be added to those already
available on the topic, are: the religious Coherence System to which the Black
people adheres contributes to the fabrication of his or her racial identity; the
religious rituals constitute a key element for the construction of a politically
marked racial identity; the theological perspective called Black Theology
contributes to a better racial literacy, even giving to the concept of race a value
closer to what it has in the black church context; and finally the understanding that
mainly the subjectivity – which consists of a positive or negative response to the
discursive practices that hail us – but not only the discourses that circulate in the
ecclesiastical environment can build or deconstruct the racial identities of black
men and women in these religious communities.

[pt] CADA LUTO, UMA LUTA: NARRATIVAS E RESISTÊNCIA DE MÃES CONTRA A VIOLÊNCIA POLICIAL / [en] FROM PRIVATE MOURNING TO COLLECTIVE STRUGGLE: NARRATIVES AND MOTHERS RESISTANCE TO POLICE VIOLENCEETYELLE PINHEIRO DE ARAUJO 17 September 2021 (has links)
[en] Rio de Janeiro is the state with the highest number of homicides due to police
brutality – often as a result of incursions related to the war on drugs. In 2019, for
instance, 1.808 deaths were classified as homicide due to police intervention, a
classification given when a police officer kills in self-defense. It also gives rise to a
series of procedures which primarily result in the archiving of the cases without a
proper investigation, or the police officers being absolved of murder, or any other crime
for that matter. Such injustice leads the victims mothers to unite – engaging in social
movements to fight for justice, seek clarification of the circumstances in which their
children died, as well as to demand punishment of those involved. This study aims to
investigate how grief is converted into political struggle as these mothers engage in
social movements, more specifically in the Rede de Comunidades e Movimentos contra
a Violência. Narratives enunciated by these mothers in public protests organized by the
Rede are considered the privileged loci for analysis. Based on a micro-perspective, this
analysis is guided by a qualitative-interpretative approach, and draws on studies which
consider narrative discourse a way of constructing social life as well as a political tool
used by social movements to demand justice. The macro-social context in which the
deaths of Black people are placed also informs the analytical process which is
organized around four spheres that are part of the mothers engagement in social
movements: the narratives told at the protests, political resistance, the concept of
maternity and the management of emotions. The first analysis describes the structure
of the stories – referred to here as narratives of engagement –by employing elements
from Labovian theory in tandem with theories which accentuate the interactional and
sociocultural values underpinning narrative practice. The second analysis observes the
discursive resources brought to bear on the narratives of the victims relatives in their
process of managing emotions as pain. The analysis focuses on their systems of
coherence, i.e., whether sequential ordering and causality relations constructed in these
stories relate to culturally established discourses. The third analysis aims to understand
how the categorization of “mother” is elaborated in the stories. The fourth and final
analysis is focused on catalysing events that drive the engagement and sustained
activism of these relatives in the Rede, investigating how moral shock is constructed in
these narratives. In sum, the analytical work suggests the existence of a recurrent
pattern that organizes narratives of engagement. Two discursive mechanisms interact
with each other in the narratives: i) a double transition between personal experience
with police brutality and the collective experience of those who have lost their children
– this means that individual pain becomes collective pain, and the specific
characterization of one police officer is transformed into grievances with respect to the
corporation as a whole; ii) the rationalization of events leading to the death of their
children by using coherence systems that operate with simplified versions of racism and the theory of Necropolitics. In a sense, these narratives of engagement are
characterized as practices of resistance and work to denounce the racism that permeates
several State s institutions. As well as practices of re-existence. By means of publicly
mourning their children, these mothers humanize the victims of police brutality
reframing these deaths not as isolated cases of police misconduct, but as part of a
system.

[pt] A GENTE JÁ FALAVA O QUE TINHA NA LEI, A GENTE JÁ SABIA O ARTIGO: HISTÓRIAS DE RESISTÊNCIA DE JOVENS QUE PASSARAM PELO ACOLHIMENTO INSTITUCIONAL / [en] WE KNEW EVERY ARTICLE IN THE LAW, WE WERE USED TO TALK ABOUT IT: STORIES ABOUT RESISTANCE TOLD BY STATE RAISED YOUNG PEOPLEALESSANDRA BRITO DE PAIVA 24 June 2021 (has links)
[en] This research aims at analyzing the narratives told by three young brothers who were once wards of the state at Rio de Janeiro, but received care and nurture from an affective mother. I seek to understand how these participants build and narrate their resistance strategies, which they had to develop throughout their lives in order to survive the violence and oppression scenarios they were inserted into. I scrutinize the articulation of such narratives with the narrators agency (Duranti, 2004; Ahrean, 2000) and resistance (Castells 1999; Ewick and Silbey, 2003). From a qualitative and interpretative point of view, the investigation is carried out using the Narrative Analysis and Interactional Sociolinguistics approaches. The participant s life stories (Linde, 1993) are studied with regard to the labovian model (1972) perspective and other contemporary authors contributions (Bastos, 2005; 2008; Bastos and Biar, 2015; Bamberg and Georgakopoulo, 2008). Based on the existence of a dominant power, responsible for creating all kinds of inequalities and unfavorable conditions, I develop the concept of resistance strategies, which depicts the act of resisting and fighting such power once the actor becomes aware of it (Foucalt, 1979; Castells, 1999; Ewick and Silbey, 2003). It is observable that the participants build an agentive identity in their narratives, for that each strategy developed by them in their lifetime is well organized in their speeches. Power, agency and awakening are central to these strategies. Resistance is a way of trying to change their micro environment to their benefit, strengthening family ties and connections.

[pt] CONSTRUÇÕES IDENTITÁRIAS NO CONTEXTO DE FORMAÇÃO DOCENTE: CONVERSAS REFLEXIVAS COM UMA FUTURA PROFESSORA DE LÍNGUAS / [en] IDENTITY CONSTRUCTIONS IN THE CONTEXT OF TEACHER EDUCATION: REFLECTIVE CONVERSATIONS WITH A FUTURE LANGUAGE TEACHERRENAN SILVA DA PIEDADE 03 December 2019 (has links)
[en] Aligned with the principles of Critical Applied Linguistics (PENNYCOOK, 2015; FABRÍCIO, 2006) and of Exploratory Practice (ALLWRIGHT; HANKS, 2009; MILLER, 2013), the present study aims to analyze the narratives of personal and professional experiences (LABOV; WALETZKY, 1967; LABOV, 1972) told by Josiele, a Portuguese-English undergraduate student of a private university located in the south zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro. With data generated in four reflective conversations, we take into consideration, among other topics, parts of Josiele s formative trajectory linked to her experiences in the supervised teaching practice, in the PIBID/English Project, in the language course where she teaches, especially her fears and frustrations. Within a qualitative and interpretative view of research (DENZIN, LINCOLN, 2006), the analysis is conducted according to the perspectives of Narrative Analysis (BRUNER, 2004; BASTOS, 2005) and of Appraisal System (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005). Thus, I seek to: (i) investigate how the narratives told by Josiele are (co)constructed throughout the interaction, (ii) reflect critically on the topics emerging from them, (iii) examine the evaluative marks and how they contribute discursively to the (co)construction of identities (MOITA LOPES, 2003). Amongst different experiences, the study contributed to the generation of understandings about the process situated in this research of becoming and of being a teacher and the results indicate that our interactions have enabled us to (i) reflect critically on the type of student/professional Josiele is becoming, as well as (ii) to share complaints, pedagogical proposals, moments of success and episodes of failure which were, on many occasions, intensified and expanded by our evaluative discourse as (co)narrators.

[en] Taking into account the processes of normalization of experiences of gender and
sexuality in the family context, the present work focuses on the life stories of people who
identify themselves as LGBTQIA+ regarding their life experiences with their family. As part
in the contemporary researches of Applied Linguistics – which has been intending to
understand the processes of production of vulnerability and subalternity in discursive and
social practices – the processes of identity construction (performance) in these narratives
as well as the respective discourses that support it are investigated. In a qualitative and
interpretative research methodological bias, data were generated through interview with
men and women whose performances correspond to the above-mentioned spectrum of
sexualities; for the analysis it was chosen the narratives of three participants. For this, it
was mobilized discussions and tools proper to the Narrative Analysis, Intercultural
Sociolinguistics and Queer Linguistics. The analysis follows the laminar division in three
parts. In the first, it is intent to demonstrate how identities are indexed through sequential
relations in the production of causality and through evaluations in order to produce the
family as a repressive institution. In the second, based on the face work, we seek to show
how a stigma negotiation occurs in the interaction. Finally, based on lexical choices and
evaluative sequences, it is intent to show how the Discourse of Repression is indexed in
the narratives. From this, it was possible to understand how identity performances not
coherent with cis-heternormative values triggered process of control, regulation and
repression.

[pt] ACABAVA SENDO SEMPRE EU O PUNIDO, NÉ. POR NÃO QUERER ESTAR ALI: NARRATIVAS DE MICRO VIOLÊNCIAS INSTITUCIONAIS PARA COM PESSOAS LGBTQIA+ / [en] IT ENDS UP THAT I WAS ALWAYS THE ONE WHO GOT PUNISHED, RIGHT? BECAUSE I DIDN T WANT TO BE THERE: NARRATIVES OF INSTITUTIONAL MICRO-VIOLENCE TO LGBTQIA+ PEOPLEANNA PAULA BEZERRA DA SILVA 17 April 2023 (has links)
Narrativas (Linde, 1993; Moita Lopes, 2001; Bastos, 2005; Bamberg, 2006;
Georgakopoulou, 2006; Bastos; Biar, 2015; Biar; Orton; Bastos, 2021) irei
estigmatização vividas por indivíduos por conta de suas orientações sexuais;
entendemos quem somos e a nossa sexualidade. Além disso, também recorro à
Teoria Queer (Butler, 2003 [1990], Foucault, 2020 [1976]; Sedgwick, 1985; 2007
[1990]; Milani; Woff, 2015; Miskolci, 2020; Louro, 2007; 2020). O paradigma
qualitativo (Denzin; Lincoln, 2006) orienta a metodologia do estudo, o qual será
institucionais. / [en] In this dissertation, I aim to analyze, reflect and generate understanding about the
experiences of LGBTQIA+ people, emphasizing their experiences in institutional
environments such as school, family, and church. Based on Narrative Analysis
(Linde, 1993; Moita Lopes, 2001; Bastos, 2005; Bamberg, 2006;
Georgakopoulou, 2006; Bastos; Biar, 2015; Biar; Orton; Bastos, 2021) I will
direct my gaze to the possible situations of micro-violence and stigmatization
experienced by individuals because of their sexual orientations; observing, in the
narrative construction, how this affects and/or affected their trajectories and
identities. This research is situated in the field of Contemporary Applied
Linguistics (Moita Lopes et al., 2006; 2013), with interfaces with Queer
Linguistics (Borba, 2014; 2015; 2019), which understands that the use of
language is related to social practices and how we construct and understand who
we are and our sexuality. In addition, I also draw on Queer Theory ((Butler, 2003
[1990], Foucault, 2020 [1976]; Sedgwick, 1985; 2007 [1990]; Milani; Woff, 2015;
Miskolci, 2020; Louro, 2007; 2020; Miskolci, 2020;). The qualitative paradigm
(Denzin; Lincoln, 2006) guides the study s methodology, which will be developed
from the data generated in conversational interviews (Mishler, 1986) conducted
with people from the LGBTQIA+ community. At the end of this research, some
possible reflections lead us to understand how homophobic practices are
normalized in discourses as a form of jokes and regulation of bodies, generating
discomfort and even a feeling of loneliness, mainly because of the lack of support
in institutional environments.

[pt] A GENTE CONTINUA MERECENDO RESPEITO POR FAZER POLE DANCE: UMA ANÁLISE DISCURSIVA DE ESTIGMAS E IDENTIDADES EM NARRATIVAS DE MULHERES POLE DANCERS / [en] WE CONTINUE TO DESERVE RESPECT FOR DOING POLE DANCE: A DISCURSIVE ANALYSIS OF STIGMAS AND IDENTITIES IN NARRATIVES OF FEMALE POLE DANCERSLORENA ARAUJO ALVES 27 January 2022 (has links)
[en] This research aims to create intelligibilities about the pole dancing pratice through the investigation of narrative discourses produced by women from this dance-sport community. Situated in the area of Contemporary Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2006; FABRÍCIO 2006), the study is dedicated to the interpretation of meanings created in oral narratives (LABOV, 1972; BASTOS, 2005) told by pole dancers, in order to understand the emergence of stigmas (GOFFMAN, [1963] 2004) and the construction of identities (MOITA LOPES, 2002, HALL, 2005) related to the practitioners and the activity itself. The theoretical architecture is based on a socio-constructionist perspective of narratives (BASTOS; BIAR, 2015) and identities (MOITA LOPES, 2001) for the analysis of the evaluative discursive practice (LINDE, 1997; THOMPSON; ALBA-JUEZ, 2014) which brings up stigmas and resignifications of the pole dancing practice. The methodology is aligned with the qualitative research paradigm (DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2006) and the corpus was generated through interviews with learners and teachers from the pole dance studio where I practice pole dancing, located in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. The microdiscursive analysis is based on the Appraisal System (MARTIN, 2001; MARTIN; WHITE, 2005), part of the Sistemic-Functional Linguistics theory (HALLIDAY, 1994; EGGINS, 2004), for the observation of evaluative lexicogrammatical instances which contributed to the discursive construction of stigmas and identities in the narratives shared. The analysis suggests that participants (re)constructed their identities in relation to their pole dancing experiences, reflecting upon prejudice issues and the pole dancing practice itself. The pole dancers seemed to recognize and disapprove the stigmatization that negatively labels them and discredits the activity they practice, generating counter-discourses of resistance and resignification of pole dancing. Thus, in general, the dancers-athletes constructed pole dancing positively as a transformative practice which provides them with self-awareness, liberation, resilience, awakening of strengths, empowerment and many other learnings.
