Respostas dos foraminíferos planctônicos às variações da Célula de Revolvimento Meridional do Atlântico (AMOC) desde o Último Máximo Glacial na Bacia de Campos / Planktic foraminiferal responses to Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) variations since the Last Glacial Maximum on Campos BasinAna Claudia Aoki Santarosa 09 August 2018 (has links)
The objective of the present study was to investigate the response of the planktonic foraminiferaassemblage to the superficial paleoceanographic variations in the western South Atlantic, which plays a key role in the AMOC. For this purpose, a continuous marine sedimentary record was analyzed from the Late Glacial Maximum to the present, based on the planktonic foraminifera assemblage, oxygen isotopes and the Mg/Ca ratio. In addition, variations in the occurrence and geochemistry of the two morphotypes of G. ruber (white) were evaluated. This is the main species used in paleoceanographic studies of tropical and subtropical regions. The results showed that the geochemical and relative abundance differences between the G. ruber morphotypes show two ecologically distinct groups of specimens, confirming that the morphotype sensu stricto calcifies at lower depths with respect to the morphotype and sensu lato, and paleoceanographic and paleoceanographic reconstructions using non-selective mixture of morphotypescould potentially be biased. The Factorial Analysis identified four factors: Factor 1, represented by G. tenella, G. calida, and G. rubescens, is related to the subsurface temperature; Factor 2, represented by N. incompta, N. dutertrei and G. truncatulinoides is related to the depth of the thermocline; Factor 3, represented by G. bulloides, is related toupwelling; and Factor 4, represented by G. ruber and G. glutinata, is related to the intensity of the Brazil Current. The results showed that the most significant variations of paleotemperature and paleosalinity and the planktonic foraminifera assemblage are related to the abrupt climatic events of the Northern Hemisphere occurred during deglaciation and were modulated by variations in AMOC arrangement and intensity. During the cold events Heinrich 1 and Younger Dryas, related to a weakening of the AMOC, an increase of paleotemperature and paleosalinity and intensity of the Brazil Current (Factor 4) in the western portion of the South Atlantic was observed. Conversely, during the hot event Bolli-Allerod, paleotemperature and paleosalinity decreased expressively, as a response to AMOC resumption, with increased productivity and presence of a shallower thermocline (Factors 2 and 3). It is also suggested that between 26 and 15 ka there was a displacement to the north of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence, possibly reaching the latitude of the study area (∼23°S), inferred by the presence of the G. inflata. Along the Holocene, there was also a significant variation in the intensity of the Brazil Current, indicated by the maximum values of Factor 4 around 7ka. The reappearance of G. menardii plexus occurred in 8ka, as well as the increase of the species of subsurface planktonic foraminifera, indicated by Factor 1. These changes in the Holocene were attributed to the effective entrance of the hot and saline waters from the Indian Ocean via the Agulhas Leakage, which were essential for the reestablishment of the modern AMOC.

Previous issue date: 2015-02-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Because they are artificial ecosystems, reservoirs cause unforeseeable events on the water cycle, determining a continuous reorganization of communities, causing an evolution does not happen according to balanced patterns, compromising the productivity of the ecosystem. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the seasonal structure (rain and dry) and temporal (between years) of the fish assemblage of the Santa Cruz reservoir, Brazilian semiarid and verify that the rainfall and reservoir level factors influence the structure of fish assemblage. The samples were collected quarterly from February 2010 and November 2013 in eight points of the reservoir, with gillnets and mesh between 12 and 70mm, exposed by 12h00min in the water at night. The abundance of species, has been transformed into Catch per Unit Effort by numbers (CPUEn). A similarity matrix was constructed with data from CPUE, using similarity coefficient of Bray-Curtis, presented in graphics of non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling (n-MDS) between rainy season (february and may) and dry (august and november) and for years. Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA) two-away was used to test statistical differences in the temporal structure of the fish assemblage. In the statistical difference between the years, the Similarity Percentage analysis in catches (SIMPER) was used to identify the species that contributed most to the similarity between the years. The fish assemblages of the reservoir was characterized using the following descriptors: i) species richness (S); ii) diversity index of Shannon-Wiener (H'); and iii) abundance (CPUE). Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to check whether there was a difference over the period studied between the values of S, H' and CPUE. Pearson correlation was made to verify the relationship between the S data, H' and CPUE with rainfall and reservoir level. All analyzes were performed using R version 3.1.2 soft. and a significance level of p<0.05. The 9,442 individuals were captured 3 orders, 11 families and 21 species, of which four belonged to introduced species. The order Characiformes was the most representative in number of captured families and individuals, the family Cichlidae was the most representative in number of species. The n-MDS ordination plot showed a separation of fish assemblages and the PERMANOVA indicated significant differences in the structure of assemblages between years and seasons (rain and dry), no significant interaction between factors. ANOVA indicated no differences in the data of richness (5.75 min. and 9.38 max.), diversity (1.47 min. and 2.30 max.) and CPUE (0.97 min. and 7.45 max.), however, the Pearson correlation showed a negative relationship between rainfall and reservoir level with the diversity index and positive relationship between reservoir level and CPUE. We conclude that the structure of the fish assemblage of the Santa Cruz reservoir varied seasonally and temporally and rainfall and reservoir level factors were important in structuring the assemblage / Por serem ecossistemas artificiais, os reservatórios ocasionam acontecimentos não previsíveis no ciclo da água, determinando uma reorganização contínua das comunidades, fazendo com que não aconteça uma evolução de acordo com padrões equilibrados, comprometendo a produtividade do ecossistema.

FLUXOS DE CALOR E TRANSFERÊNCIA DE ENERGIA CALORÍFICA ENTRE O OCEANO E A ATMOSFERA SOBRE ESTRUTURAS OCEÂNICAS DE MESOESCALA NO ATLÂNTICO SUL / HEAT FLUXES AND HEAT ENERGY TRANSFER BETWEEN THE OCEAN AND THE ATMOSPHERE ON TOP OF OCEANIC MESOSCALE STRUCTURES IN THE SOUTH ATLANTICArsego, Diogo Alessandro 20 March 2012 (has links)
Understanding the interactions between ocean and atmosphere in regions of oceanographic
fronts is of vital importance for the improvement of numerical models for weather and climate
forecasting. In the South Atlantic Ocean (SAO) the meeting between the warm waters of the Brazil
Current (BC) and the cold waters of the Malvinas (Falkland) Current (MC) in the region known as the
Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC), results in intense mesoscale oceanic activity and, for this reason,
this region is considered one of the most energetic of the Global Ocean. The interactions resulting
from the thermal contrast in regions oceanographic fronts of the OAS are investigated in this work
through estimates of heat fluxes based on data collected in situ and by satellite. The results of this
study show that the response to the thermal contrasts found in the ocean is in the form of heat fluxes
and these fluxes are critical in modulating the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). Estimation based on
data collected in situ show that in the warm side (north) of the oceanographic front the fluxes are more
intense (latent heat: 62 W/m² and sensible heat: 0.6 W/m²) than in the cold side (south) (latent heat:
5.8 W/m² and sensible heat: -13.8 W/m²). In the South Atlantic Current (SAC) along the 30° S
parallel, heat fluxes are directly related to the meandering characteristic of the current. The data
collected in situ, in addition to allow heat flux estimates at a better spatial resolution, were used to
develop a new method for estimating the heat energy exchanged between the atmosphere and the
ocean caused by the presence of mesoscale oceanic structures. This methodology consists in the
comparison of a radiosonde profile taken over waters of the structure of interest and another taken
over waters which do not belong to this structure. The methodology was used to estimate the heat
energy transfer between the atmosphere and the ocean over the top of three structures sampled in the
OAS. The estimation of the heat energy transferred by a warm eddy detached from the BC points to an
energy in the latent (sensible) form of 1.6 1017 J (-2.8 1016 J) which corresponds to approximately
0.011 % of the total heat energy of the eddy transferred to the atmosphere during the field experiment
and 0.78 % transferred during the supposed lifetime of the eddy (3 months). Along the CSA two
oceanic structures were studied: (i) a cold meander that receives from the atmosphere energy in the
latent (sensible) form of 1.4 106 J/m2 (5.4 105 J/m2), and (ii) warmer waters associated with a
detached eddy from the Agulhas Current (AC) that transfer to the atmosphe heat energy of
approximately 4 106 J/m2 an 5.7 106 J/m2 in the latent and sensible forms, respectively. The
estimation of heat energy transfer on top of mesoscale oceanic structures clearly demonstrate the
importance of these structures for the heat exchanges between the ocean and the atmosphere and must
be taken into account in future works about this subject in the SAO.
No
As interações resultantes do contraste termal

The trophic interactions of 31 fish species and 2 squid species of the Araçá Bay, São Sebastião (São Paulo, Brazil), were investigated through carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotopes. The δ13C of the species ranged from -17.2‰ to -12.1‰, and the δ15N, from 10.0‰ to 14.5‰. The δ13C data of the producers and consumers indicated that the species analysed are part of the pelagic and benthic trophic webs, and have phytoplankton, microphytobenthos and organic matter from the sediment as the base of the food web. Higher values of δ13C were registered in the summer, linked to the higher values at the base. The trophic positions of the species varied between 3.18 e 4.72, an indication that they act as secondary and tertiary-quaternary consumers. The diet composition of fish, evaluated trough the isotope mixing model, showed high contribution of prey, such as Polychaeta, Tanaidacea and Ophiuroidea, groups highly abundant in the Bay and the adjacent São Sebastião Channel. The intake of available prey in the intertidal region and in the Channel revealed the importance of the fish and squid as nutrient pathway links, coupling the pelagic-benthic systems and the sublittoral and intertidal regions of the Araçá Bay.

transporte e destino do gás liberado no ambiente.
Underwater oil and gas exploration has been growing fast in low latitude
regions, even though very few experimental data acquisition and modeling
involving gas release in tropical and shallow waters have been published
by the scientific community. This study was developed to increase the
knowledge concerning the gas behavior during a subsurface blowout in
shallow waters. The methods used and the results obtained from this
study are presented, as well as a model to simulate the transport and
dispersion of a subsurface gas plume released from shallow waters. At
first, field experiments were carried out by simulating a subsurface
blowout with natural gas at approximately 30 m depth in the Northeast
Brazilian coast. Four distinct scenarios with varied conditions of
geophysical forcing were associated with different fluxes (from 3000 to
9000 L.h-1) and seasonal periods (summer and winter). As a second stage,
the analysis of the gas plume dispersion was accomplished with the data
obtained from the above campaigns. The model used a Lagrangian control
volume for discretization and simulated the gas plume evolution,
associating thermodynamics and the impact of the thermodynamics on
the hydrodynamics of the gas plume. The predominant transport occurred
toward the south-southwest (northeast) during the summer (winter)
period. The difference in the plume width occurred mainly in the upper
surface layer. The gas plume displaced toward the south-southwest
(northeast-north) during the summer (winter) period. The gas flow releases
seemed not to affect the local hydrodynamics. The plume movement was
always influenced by the tidal and meteorological forcings, in that order.
The simulation results indicated that, as the gas plume rose in the water
column, the same plume was horizontally displaced toward current
predominant direction. The extreme situation provided a critical radius
(maximum horizontal displacement) from the gas release source of 35.2 m.
The comparison between the measured and the calculated data showed
that the model satisfactorily represented the main features of the gas
release, such as the displacement, diameter and ascending time of the
plume. Although the mean plume widths have the same order of
magnitude between the measurements and the calculations,
improvements may enhance the model’s performance during the earlier
plume development. Important and unique data were collected during
these subsurface releases, which contributed to the characterization of the
behavior of different blowouts in different seasons. The experiments
provided a baseline for a computational model capable of reproducing gas
plume transport and dispersion in the marine environment. The model
was able to predict the gas release transport and fate in the environment.
Thus it can be used as a tool for contingency planning of an accidental
underwater gas release.

O efeito oposto ocorre durante a fase positiva do AMM. / Tropical Atlantic Ocean-atmosphere interactions and their contributions to strong variability of rainfall along the Northeast Brazilian coast (NEB) were investigated for the years 1974-2008. The core rainy seasons of March-April and June-July were identified for northern Northeast Brazil (NNEB) and eastern Northeast Brazil (ENEB), respectively. Lagged linear regressions between sea surface temperature (SST), pseudo wind stress (PWS), latent heat flux (LHF) and air specific humidity anomalies over the entire tropical Atlantic and strong rainfall anomalies in NNEB and ENEB show that the rainfall variability of these regions is differentially influenced by the dynamics of the tropical Atlantic. When the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is abnormally displaced southward a few months prior to the NNEB rainy season, the associated meridional mode (strengthening of the northeast trade winds, relaxation of the southeast trade winds, strong evaporation in the north, weak evaporation in the south, colder SST in the North, and warmer SST in the South) increases precipitation during the rainy season. The opposite effect occurs during the positive phase of the dipole. Additionally, this study shows strong influence and predictive effect of the Northwestern Equatorial Atlantic (NWEA) on the NNEB rainfall. Thinner barrier layer in the NWEA from November-December to March-April is associated with progressive cooling of SST, strengthening of meridional component of the northeasterly wind and intense precipitations over the NNEB. The dynamical influence of the tropical Atlantic on the June-July ENEB rainfall variability shows a northwestward-propagating area of strong, positively correlated SST and air specific humidity from the southeastern tropical Atlantic (February-March) to the Southwestern Atlantic Warm Pool (SAWP) offshore of Brazil (June-July). The northwestward-propagating area, observed from February-March to June-July, follows the same pathway of the southern branch of south equatorial current (sSEC), which is responsible of the oceanic heat transport from east to west in the southern tropical Atlantic. The displacement of the warmest phase of horizontal advection of the oceanic mixed layer heat from the eastern part (between 5-15ºS) to the Brazilian coast in June-August confirms this influence of the sSEC on core rainy season in the ENEB. Furthermore, according to our study, the SAWP could be used as index of rainfall prediction in ENEB. An early acceleration of the southeasterly trade winds, associated with a strong convergence of the wind anomaly over the SAWP, produces excessive humidity over the region and causes more precipitation over ENEB. The opposite effect occurs for less rainy episodes.

Intrusions of South Atlantic Central Water on the Espírito Santo Basin shelf (18ºS-22ºS, Brazil) / Intrusões de Água Central do Atlântico Sul na Bacia do Espírito Santo (18ºS-22ºS)Palóczy Filho, André 31 July 2015 (has links)
The intrusion pathways and physical mechanisms associated with intrusions of cold, nutrient-rich South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) onto the continental shelf of the Espírito Santo Basin (ESB), off southeast Brazil (18°S-22°S), are investigated. The approach consists of analyses of a set of simplified, process-oriented, primitive-equation numerical models supported by the analyses of an independent, more realistic numerical model and available observations. The cross-isobath circulation is found to be strongly dominated by wind-driving, consistent with previous findings. In the model experiments, SACW enters the ESB shelf through two preferential pathways along the Tubarão Bight area (TB, 19.5°S-22°S). These pathways are found to be locations where an equatorward along-isobath pressure gradient force (PGFy∗) of ∼2 x 10-6 m s-2 develops in response to steady wind forcing. This equatorward PGFy∗ is essentially in geostrophic balance, and therefore induces onshore flow across the shelf edge and most of the shelf proper. The Brazil Current (BC) imparts an additional equatorward PGFy∗ on the shelf. The momentum budget reveals that the ageostrophic residue of the PGFy∗ is compensated mostly by momentum advection and bottom friction. Buoyancy arrest might be important under more intense SACW intrusion events, as suggested by the maximum observed values of the slope Burger number (0.32-0.92). Among the deep ocean forcing mechanisms considered, the intrinsic pycnocline uplifting effect of the BC seems to be responsible for ∼1.4°C colder upwelled water under steady, upwelling-favorable wind forcing, relative to a flat stratification scenario. The BC also seems to induce local intrusions by inertially overshooting the shelf edge, consistent with Rossby numbers of ∼0.3-0.5, as estimated for the area along the TB shelf edge. Finally, the planetary β-effect is also related to a background equatorward PGFy∗. In addition, the steady response of the continental shelf to a periodic (in the along-shelf direction) pressure forcing at the shelf edge is compared with the BC-forced primitive-equation numerical solutions. A simple Arrested Topographic Wave (ATW) analytical model is found to be successful in representing the general features of the numerical solutions. The cross-shelf e-folding scales of the cross-shelf velocity estimated from the numerical solutions agree in order of magnitude with the cross-shelf penetration scale q-1 = [-2r/(lfs)]½ = 10 km predicted by the ATW, where r is a linear bottom resistance parameter, l is the along-shelf wavenumber of the forcing at the shelf edge, f is the Coriolis parameter and s is the bottom slope. Furthermore, the use of quadratic bottom stress accounts for some of the relative increase in the numerical onshore penetration scales, which are predicted to be qquadratic-1 = [-2CD/(lfs)]½ [Ubot]½, where CD is a quadratic bottom friction parameter and Ubot is the near-bottom velocity magnitude. The kind of steady response to periodic deep ocean forcing examined here may provide insight into other continental shelves under the influence of western boundary currents.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the associated use of the proxies ?18O and Mg/Ca, both analyzed in foraminifera tests. ?18O and trace metals analyses were performed in order to achieve this purpose on samples of planktonic (G. ruber and G. sacculifer) and benthic (Cibicidoides spp., C. corpulentus, Uvigerina spp. and H. elegans) species of foraminifera from two cores from South Atlantic. Despite of the fact that the proxies used on this study present distinct fits within the species they correlate very well, being possible to estimate the values of temperature, ?18OSW and ?18OLocal. Based on the temperature estimated by Mg/Ca it was possible to identify a negative anomaly of -1,5 ± 0,2 °C between the LGM and HL, meanwhile a positive anomaly of 1,7 ± 0,4 °C was observed in the deep waters for the same period. The ?18OSW data estimated by temperature and ?18O indicate an oscilation of 1,0 ± 0,1 ? and 2,0 ± 0,2 ? for planktonic and benthic species between the LGM and the HL. Based on the literature value for the ice volume signal (~1,2 ?) the superficial waters of the study area indicated a very low salinity oscilation, opposite to the high salinity oscillation in the deep waters. The ?18OLocal estimatives exhibited a very weak salinity oscillation between LGM and HL in the superficial waters (~0,1 ?), providing a much more strong oscilation in the deep waters (1,0 ± 0,3 ?). The salinity increase during the LGM in the deep waters establish the validity of the positive temperature anomaly observed in this study, since the density of the deep water needs to be adequate to maintain the water column stratification.
