"Il faut trouver un modus vivendi" : le scandale au théâtre des années 1940 aux années 1960 / "We have to find a modus vivendi" : the scandal at the theater from the 1940's to the 1960's

Aebi, Delphine 06 June 2011 (has links)
Our whole approach is based on the observation that scandal, often addressed through moral discourses that condemn or celebrate it, is actually a protean and profoundly ambiguous event. Because drama is closely linked to the concepts of emergence and immediacy, scandal finds on stage the perfect place for its release. However, in the eyes of authors seeking a definition of their identity and their relationship to others, drama and scandal, although commonly associated with notions of the spectacular, exhibition and conflict, should not be reduced to this trope. The years 1940 to 1960 in France are a troubled and unstable period, leading playwrights from different horizons to converge towards the same goal: creating a vibrant community. Scandal represents for them a privileged means of communication between the stage and the audience, offering hope of a theatre capable of reconciling the individual and the city.

Investigating the multimodal construal and reception of irony in film translation : an experimental approach

Burczynska, Paulina January 2018 (has links)
In the light of recent changes on the audiovisual scene in Poland, audiences can choose among different AVT modalities. Although voice-over still prevails on Polish TV, subtitles have become more and more popular as an alternative form of film translation on television. Due to rapid technological advances, commercial requirements and differences in Polish viewers’ preferences, it is thus crucial to understand how audiences at different levels of English proficiency (low, medium, high) retrieve meaning, especially complex ironic meaning relayed through different methods of film translation, such as subtitles and voice-over and the extent to which verbal and non-verbal semiotic channels contribute to irony comprehension. Wilson and Sperber’s (1981, 1992; 1995) echoic theory of irony has been selected as the theoretical framework, given its ability to account for multimodal irony in audiovisual texts as well as the significant importance of non-verbal semiotic resources in the generation and interpretation of irony. The study employs triangulation, incorporating descriptive, experimental and interactionist components. The descriptive component involves multimodal transcription (Baldry and Thibault, 2006) of selected fragments in which irony plays a pivotal narrative role. This procedure aims to determine what non-verbal modes contribute to the multimodal construal of irony and how it is relayed in the subtitled and voiced-over translations. In the experimental component, viewers’ eye movements are recorded using eye-tracking technology while watching subtitled and voiced-over fragments of Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011). In the interactionist components, a questionnaire is used in order to elucidate how and/or whether they retrieve ironic meaning as intended by the filmmakers in the selected excerpts. The most obvious finding to emerge from the descriptive data analysis is that multimodal irony is not relayed by the film dialogue alone but, rather, in unison with non-verbal semiotic resources. The instances of multimodal irony in the two Sherlock Holmes films were found to perform narrative and comedic functions by combining the visual, kinesic and acoustic modes of film language. The analysis and comparison of SL dialogues and TL translations revealed two broad categories of irony relay, namely: preservation and modification. The majority of the instances of multimodal irony were modified in the subtitled version, while preservation is only sporadically opted for. In its voiced-over counterpart, the intended meaning is preserved and modified in equal proportions. The experimental component showed major differences in gaze patterns among the participants with different language skills in the subtitled clips. For instance, on average, LLPs spent more time reading the subtitles than HLPs or MLPs. Similar visual behavior, on the other hand, was observed among all viewers in the voiced-over clips in which the on-screen character’s face attracted the greatest amount of visual attention. The interactionist strand showed that the viewers retrieved the intended meaning to various extents depending on their English language proficiency. This data undergirds an assessment of the effectiveness of subtitles and voice-over in the translation and reception of multimodal irony on screen.

Bochio, Alessandra Lucia. January 2010 (has links)
With the advent of computers new image paradigms have emerged and a new relationship with the one that possess have prevailed. In this dissertation, we analyze the image potencials seen in that context and its development in interactive installations through the ways of asking for the audience to join. For this study, we took as a guidance the Pierre Lévy's parameter the reappropriation possibility and the recombination of others image material elements by the audience. Yet we search two initial aspects considered relevant to the study: interviewing the audience and the experience with such images and installations. The first one was present only in an initial phase of the research. Only so we can be counscious of the dimensions and the dialog aspect given by the images. As for the second one, we have chosen to live and analyze images from three installations of the Festival Internacional de Linguagem Eletrônica - File 2009. From the analysis of the selected images with a Project presentation of interactive installation o four authorship and yet through the concept approach that pass by the interactive installations and of the open potentiality of its images, it will generate reflexions about the way the image manifests itself to the audience, how it is inserted on the image and posses it. With all that, we could articulate concepts and the practices that involve those productions, trying to create a more particular speech to the focus given to this research / Mestre

Une approche semiodiscursive / The representations of the Publics in the websites of the theaters in France and Chile. A Semiotic and Discourse analytic approach

Pérez Lagos, Camila 15 December 2016 (has links)
The subject of this thesis concerns how the audience of theatre is represented within the discourse of cultural policies in France and Chile. This is related to the audience of internet websites (including social networks) of four public theatres of reference who report to have both a « contemporary » and « classical » program. The main question is to identify how these representations are transmitted amongst these devices. The principal hypothesis underlines the fact that there is link a between the social and symbolic conditions of the discourses of cultural policies which appear in « les écrits d’écran » (Bonaccorsi, 2013) through linguistic, visual and digital signs. The theoretical and methodological approach is primarily semiotic-discursive with regard to new categories emerging from Internet-based corpus (Rouquette, 2009).This research led to the conclusion that the cultural policies of these two countries have a discourse on access to culture for « everybody »; « everybody » being, on one hand, a « more citizenly audience » and, on the other hand, a « more consumer audience ». Moreover, the internet websites in this study update their scenography differently (through linguistic, visual and digital signs), even if they share a generic and global scene (Maingueneau, 2013), all of which is dependent on the ethos (Charaudeau, 2009) of each theatre. However, the « national audience » and the « potential buyer » appear as traces of the discourses of cultural policies among websites and social networks where, we can additionally observe a profane speech (Pasquier, 2009), namely, from the audience.

Enhancing audience experience on Live music

XIAO, DAXIN January 2018 (has links)
Increasingly, people attend live music event for diversified experiences that they could not have from listening to music at home or watching a broadcast on TV. Some seek to interact with their idol on site; others enjoy the collective action with audience members who share with them the same music preference. Enhancing audience experiences on live events, therefore, gains popularity. Research focus on crowd behaviors and the possibility of how implementing new technologies into this area. However, few studies have investigated have investigated the impact of individual promotion in the crowds by offering them a particular moment enabling them to feel more connected to the event. To deeply understand requirements from different stakeholders, audiences, and performers, a participatory workshop was conducted through which they acted as co-creators in the development process. Additionally, three qualitative evaluations were carried out to collect feedback on how the design system “HeartBeat” could enhance the audience’s experience. The research found that promoting individual impact and collective action are not conflicting with each other. Instead, they complement one another throughout the live session. “HeartBeat” is not only a design prototype that aims to increase audience experience but also a starting point for future design explorations in live music settings.

It brings an overview about the matter in the world and focuses particularly the case of Brazil, where the three main television channels have had historically some of the highest rates of audience compared to the major networks of other countries. After analyzing the fragmentation of televiewing audiences in the last two decades and the numbers that show the increasing dispersion of the public attention among the multiples choices of media available nowadays, the study discuss the strategies of programming and content construction based on writers and producers opinions and on the exam of important TV programs. The purpose is to expose the efforts required to attract, sustain and retain televiewers attention. These efforts start with audience measurements and researches about consumers attitudes and interests toward TV, which defines the agenda of themes and the techniques to write, direct and edit programs. The research discusses also how exposure of televiewers occurs in an environment where consumers have multiple choices of screens to choose television programs and other media activities. It considers that exposure is an essential condition to support the study of other approaches of the communication process, such as the influence of the media over culture and society. In a context where media occupies so much time of our personal life, the impact of the mass media might be proportionally direct to the number of people they reach, to the habits of consuming information and entertainment and to the time dedicated to accessing them.
