A struggle for representation : the international media treatment of South Africa, 1972-1979Sanders, James January 1997 (has links)
Between 1972 and 1979, the politicians and officials of South Africa's Department of Information attempted to manipulate and neutralise the international media's treatment of South Africa. This programme of activity was exposed at the end of the decade in what became known as the Information scandal. Meanwhile, in Europe and North America, South African exiles and British and American citizens opposed to apartheid, campaigned under the banner of 'anti-apartheid'. Foreign correspondents in South Africa numbered little more than a dozen in 1972. By the end of the 1970s, they had become a formidable force. This expansion was directly related to events on the ground, most notably the South African invasion of Angola (1975) and the Soweto uprising (1976). The introduction of the Cold War to the southern African sub-continent transformed the nature of the international media's coverage, leading, eventually, to a greater American media presence in South Africa. The increased number of American journalists, resident in the Republic, served to expand the scope of the debate regarding the intertwining of colonialism and racism in apartheid. In general, Americans tended to represent South Africa as a metaphor for the racial problems of the United States, whereas British commentators discussed the country in the context of a decolonisation story that had somehow gone wrong. One of the most significant developments in the coverage of South Africa, during the 1970s, was the re-emergence of colonial representations of both Africans and Afrikaners. This followed the temporary' suspension of such representations in the 1960s. Despite the extensive efforts of the anti-apartheid movements and the Department of Information to influence the Stiuth African 'story', these shifts in representation appear to have originated with the international media. It should, however, be acknowledged that the British and American media's dependence on the South African English-language press remained profound throughout the decade.

Since the earliest days of the American republic, political sex scandals have been a part of the political discourse. Despite the passing of several hundred years, much discussion is still given to political sex scandals by the popular media. Little attention, however, is paid to research into the relationship among political sex scandals, the media reporting of sex scandals, and the ways in which politicians are able to use the media during admissions of sex scandals. This project analyzes the most common characteristics within three major newspapers reporting on five cases of gubernatorial admissions of extramarital affairs. The multiple case studies analysis observes 89 newspaper articles to secure data from the initial speculation of a gubernatorial extramarital affair to the admission of an extramarital affair and the period of time (up to one month) following the admission of an extramarital affair. / Master of Arts

Better infamous than unknown? : A study on the media effects of a scandal on corporate reputation and visibilityJohansson, Linnea January 2016 (has links)
In this paper I theorize about how a company’s corporate reputation and visibility can be affected by a scandal. Scandals are associated with negative outcomes such as bad reputation but this thesis investigates if there are some positive side-effects of a scandal in terms of increased visibility. The idea of it being better for companies to be infamous than unknown is studied using the empirical example of the payment service company Klarna AB, their scandal in April of 2014 is the focus of the thesis. The results show that the company’s visibility was affected in a positive way following the scandal since the number of articles about Klarna did increase after the scandal compared to before the scandal. Klarna’s visibility was also shown to increase through the higher number of customer reviews after the scandal. The measurements for corporate reputation of Klarna rose significantly after the scandal in comparison to before the scandal indicating that also Klarna’s reputation was positively affected by the scandal. The conclusion is that it is better to be infamous than unknown since there was something to gain from the scandal in terms of visibility and corporate reputation.

Bakgrund: Redovisningsskandaler anses grunda sig i de kryphål som återfinns inom redovisningens regelverk. När dessa kryphål utnyttjas riskerar organisationens redovisnings legitimitet att ådra sig en legitimitetsskada eftersom den då strider mot allmänhetens förväntningar om hur en korrekt redovisning är upprättad. Tidigare forskning har presenterat strategier för att reparera legitimitet på en organisatorisk nivå. Forskningen tycks däremot vara tunn om hur ett legitimitetstillskrivande medel såsom redovisningen kan repareras när det ådragit sig en legitimitetsskada. Det förklarar varför det varit motiverat att genomföra en studie som undersöker detta. Syfte: Studien syftar till att skapa en modell som förklarar den process där redovisningens legitimitet repareras. Metod: Syftet har besvarats genom en deduktiv ansats där befintlig legitimitetsreparerande litteratur legat till grund för en tentativ modell. Utifrån teori har vi härlett tre mekanismer som vi prövat om de kan förklara hur redovisningens legitimitet repareras. Genom studiens kvalitativa ansats har vi, med hjälp av innehållsanalyser, utfört två fallstudier där fallen avsett två redovisningsskandaler. Med hjälp av empiri bestående av nyhetsartiklar och årsredovisningar, har vi provat om modellen ger en förklaring till hur redovisningens legitimitet repareras. Resultat och slutsats: Studiens resultat pekar mot att vår slutgiltiga modell besvarar syftet. Redovisningens legitimitet kan repareras genom framförallt organisationens egna vidtagna åtgärder, men även genom att såväl organisationen som media utpekar syndabockar som ställs ansvariga för redovisningens brister. Vår slutmodell förklarar även att media har en inverkande och pådrivande roll ifråga om redovisningens legitimitet och att regler och policys skapar möjligheter för organisationen att utnyttja dessa för att legitimera redovisningen. / Background: Accounting scandals are considered based on the loopholes found in the accounting rules. It is argued that an organization's legitimacy in the accounting, in such situations when these loopholes are exploited, can be threatened since it differs from the public's expectations of how a proper accounting is constituted. Previous research has presented strategies to repair organizational legitimacy. Research seems however to be sparse in the matter of how a tool to repair legitimacy, such as accounting, can be repaired when it incurs a loss of legitimacy. This study contributes to this specific area. Purpose: This study aims to create a model that explains the process by which accounting legitimacy is repaired. Method: Through a deductive approach, in which existing literature formed the basis for a tentative model, we derived three mechanisms that have been tested whether they can explain how the legitimacy of accounting can be repaired. Further, by using the techniques of content analysis, we did a dual case study where the cases concerned two Swedish accounting scandals. Using empirical material consisting of news articles and annual reports, we tested whether the model provides an explanation for how the legitimacy of accounting is repaired. Results and conclusions: This study's results suggest that our purpose can be answered. The results also indicates that accounting's legitimacy can be repaired primarily through the organization's own actions taken, but also by the organization as well as the media designate scapegoats who are deemed to be responsible for the accounting's shortcomings. Our final model also explains that media plays an influencing and actuating role in terms of the legitimacy of accounting, and that rules and policies create opportunities for the organization to legitimize its own accounting.

Thesis advisor: Donald Fishman / The purpose of this essay is to dissect the Duke Lacrosse Rape Scandal. This crisis of rushed judgments began as a questionable allegation that escalated into a scandal involving rape, privilege, class, and race. A historical overview of the Duke Rape Scandal is given which segues into an examination of the crisis communication strategies of both Duke University and the Duke Lacrosse players through the use of Fink’s stage analysis and Benoit’s image restoration theory. Additionally, through the use of Fisher’s narrative paradigm, the thesis examines numerous press articles and compares the media differences in portrayals, terminology, and imagery of the players both during and after the scandal. The media narratives helped to mold the opinions of the public.
