Differentiation of Central Auditory Processing Disorder and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and Adolescents

Austin, Laura J. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not children diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) can be distinguished from one another on the basis of both objective and subjective assessment of attention and behavior. First, children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD, CAPD, and concomitant ADHD/CAPD were compared to participants with emotional problems on measures of attention/concentration, depression, anxiety, and parental reports of internalzing and externalizing behaviors. Overall, statistical analyses did not reveal significant differences between performances of children diagnosed with ADHD and those diagnosed with CAPD. However, clinical comparisons across groups of children diagnosed with ADHD, CAPD, comorbid ADHD/CAPD and Affective Disorders revealed condition-specific clinical profiles, thus providing some support for CAPD as a distinct clinical entity. Second, exploratory cluster analysis was performed to further investigate the relationship between ADHD and CAPD. This procedure lead to the identification of four distinct clusters. However, analyses of these clusters revealed no distinct pattern of performance for children diagnosed with either ADHD or CAPD. Rather, participants with these diagnoses were evenly distributed throughout the clusters. Additionally, no cluster clearly represented the expected clinical profile for a diagnosis of CAPD- namely, significant auditory attentional/processing problems in the absence of other attentional difficulties. Implications for the assessment and treatment of childhood attentional disorders are discussed and recommendations for future research provided.

The Effects of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) on Auditory Measures in Women

Briley, Kelly Anne 05 1900 (has links)
This study examined the relationship between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medication and auditory measures in clinically depressed women. Experimental subjects were tested in both a medicated and unmedicated condition. Experimental subjects were compared to a normal control group; additionally intrasubject comparison was made within the experimental group. Test measures included: audiometry, tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions, uncomfortable loudness level, masking level difference, SCAN-A, Synthetic Sentence Identification (SSI), and the low predictability section of the Revised Speech in noise (RSPIN). The unmedicated group scored significantly less favorably than the control group on the following tests; SCAN-A (composite, filtered words, and auditory figure ground), R-SPIN (0MCR condition in both the right and left ears). Additionally, the unmedicated group scored significantly less favorably than the medicated group on the SSI (-20MCR condition right ear only) and of the R-SPIN (0MCR condition right ear only). Other test measures indicated consistent trends but did reach significance.

Preadolescent Musical Training Influences Spatial Listening and Temporal Processing Skills

Schneiderman, Brett, Dula, Erin, Elangovan, Saravanan 03 March 2017 (has links)
We examined the hypothesis that neural plasticity following preadolescent musical training improves spatial listening and temporal processing. Two groups of children with (>2 years) and without (< 6 months) significant musical training were assessed on binaural processing, spatial memory, and gap detection. Results demonstrated the musician group had an advantage in spatial listening and auditory memory. These findings suggest an early emergence of listening benefits and also support musical training as a rehabilitative strategy to ameliorate specific auditory processing deficits.

Investigation of Auditory Processing Deficits in Patients With Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM)

Elangovan, Saravanan, Smurzynski, Jacek, Crewe, Emily, Dula, Erin 21 November 2014 (has links)
The incidence of DM is 9.6% in the USA with its prevalence increasing globally (NIDDKD, 2005). A common, but under-recognized complication of DM is hearing difficulty (~ 93%). However, the nature of this often sub-clinical dysfunction is still poorly understood. The aim of this study is to better understand DM-related hearing loss.

Children's difficulties in school may have many causes and be influenced by various factors, among which auditory processing disorder (APD). The behaviors suggesting APD and disabilities in phonological skills are frequently associated with learning problems. Therefore, an evaluation of auditory and phonological skills is of utmost importance to determine an appropriate intervention. The main purpose of this study was to devise and apply a training model, the phonological auditory training, addressed to children who have learning difficulties and behaviors that characterize APD, as well as to assess its effectiveness. Three school-girls (ages between 8 years/7 months old and 10 years/1 month old) from the 2nd. and 3rd. grades of Primary Education were previously selected as they were attending reinforcement classes for students with learning difficulties. The investigation was carried out in 3 phases: a) pre-training, b) training and c) post-training. In the pre-training phase, an interview with the students’ parents and an interview with their teachers were initially conducted. Afterwards, the participants’ auditory processing was evaluated by means of screening tests, namely alternate dissyllable test (SSW), Speech- in-Noise test, PSI test and evaluation of phonological awareness using the Phonological Awareness Test. The training phase consisted of 12 individual sessions involving activities aimed to stimulate phonological and auditory skills. These sessions took place twice a week and lasted about three months. After the end of the training period, the participants were re-evaluated following the same procedures described above. The data obtained both during the training sessions and the evaluations of the participants’ performance before and after the training phase were analyzed quantitatively and comparatively. The results showed the three students had improved in auditory ...(Complete abstract click electronic address below)
