Social participation in contemporary art jewellery : An investigation of contemporary art jewellery’s ability to discuss complex questions within western society.

Huusko Källman, Rebecka January 2014 (has links)
On the base of cultural norms, it seems that it is commonly accepted that one animal is considered 'friend', while the other 'food'. Even though people's opinion may differ in regards to the world's largest animal rights organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal) (Kulkarni, 2009), the organization asks a relevant question: “ If your cat tasted like chicken would you eat her?” As I work within the contemporary art jewellery field, it is through the body, jewellery, and the conscious act of wearing it, that I would like to encourage consumers to reflect on their personal meat consumption and to connect the packaged meat to the animal it comes from: what is it that we are eating? Where does it come from? Through this essay and my work/practice, I aim to critically reflect on the different existing values between animals in our society and to inspire more conscious and well informed decisions concerning meat. This essay is a research project prior to my practical exam work at the Jewellery + Corpus Master program at Konstfack and will serve as a basis for my artistic exam work. Against this background, I look at relevant literature and case studies representative of the field of contemporary art jewellery, in order to research/address the following question in this essay: -          Is it possible to discuss complex questions within society though the media of contemporary art jewellery?  Within the field, opinions differ between art historians as well as makers; it seems that the framework of contemporary art jewellery provides the medium, on one side, with great potential to speak of issues within society, although, on the other side, the same frame work commonly hinders the medium’s ability to reach out to the general public, in order to generate a wider discussion.

Awareness, Stress, and Income as Contributors in Medicare Part B Late Enrollment

Dhaurali, Bishnu Hari 01 January 2019 (has links)
Medicare Part B is one of the federal health insurance programs available to senior citizens in the United States. Unlike Medicare Part A, Part B enrollment is not automatic, and those missing their initial enrollment period are assessed a 10% or more penalty in addition to their monthly premium rate for the rest of their lives. This problematic enrollment policy has impacted senior citizens who have missed Part B enrollment windows, creating for them an added financial burden when many are transitioning to fixed incomes. Guided by social construction theory and using a nonprobability, convenience sampling approach, the likelihood coefficient values associated with Medicare Part B enrollee awareness, stress, and income of 112 residents of a suburban city in a northeastern state who were 65 years and older were examined. Sequential Forward: LR methodology yielded a significant, negative (b = -1.21, Wald X2(1) = 7.56, OR = .298, p = .006, CI [.126, .707]) and a significant, positive (b = 2.16, Wald X2(1) = 6.29, OR = 8.678, p = .012, CI [1.60, 46.99]) likelihood of predicting Medicare Part B late enrollment penalties for awareness and stress; income was not a significant model predictor. Participants who reported higher stress levels were 8.7 times more likely to be classified in the Medicare Part B late enrollment penalty than those reporting lower stress. Participants who were aware of enrollment needs were 3.4 times more likely to have no late enrollment penalties than those who were unaware. Positive social change centers on increasing Medicare Part B consumer awareness, reducing stress of enrollment deadlines, and providing information to federal policy makers to simplify enrollment policies to reduce or end late enrollment penalties.

Origens da interioridade: autoconhecimento e externalismo / Origins of interiority: self-knowledge and externalisme

Cláudia Maria Passos Ferreira 29 May 2006 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to investigate the formation of interiority from an externalist approach. The processes by which the self is constituted are considered to be associated with the development of the first-person perspective. Adopt a first-person perspective is to become able to refer to yourself and know your own mental and bodily states. Self-awareness and self-knowledge were traditionally subsumed under the idea of Descartes first person authority. According to the Cartesian view, we would have preferred and non-empirical to our mental states that would be expressed by a knowledge access. The central thesis of externalism asserts, instead, that the content of mental states consists in part by relationships with the environment. The adoption of the externalist thesis calls into question the Cartesian assumption that we have privileged access to the contents of our thoughts, thus restricting the authority of the first person. The perceptual externalism Davidson, for example, offers a ternary I-interpreter-world solution to the origins of self. Davidson's thesis is presented as reconciling the self and the central ideas of externalism. Are presented two models of external genesis of I: 1) ecological models that propose a development of a sense of self as a due to interactions between the self and the environment; 2) the psychological model Winnicott proposes that the emergence of the sense of self from a ternary relationship between the self, others and the transitional objects. We defend the thesis that the psychological model of Winnicott is most suitable for describing the epistemological conceptualization of the origins Davidson externalist self-knowledge.

The release of international dates on learning achievement in different world countries attributed to Brazil one of the worst positions. The educational programs should be efficient for all of the population, so that it is guaranteed that on completing the basic education, the student is able to read with efficiency. That is why, the discussion about the causes of educational failure and teaching methods are of a great social importance. Objective: Verify the efficiency of the Alfabetização Fônica Program for phonological awareness skills development in a computer based group training. Method: The study was conducted with 78 students of 1st grade of the Basic Municipal School from Itaim Paulista, south zone of the São Paulo city. Out of this total, 34 students were female, and 46 male, with the mean age of 7.23. The participants were divided in two groups, the experimental group, EG, that went through the program activities and the control group, CG. The study was divided in three phases: pre-test, intervention, post-test. In the first phase, the reading and writing abilities were assessed with the following tests: the Word Reading Competence Test (WRCT), the Sentence Reading Test (WSCT), the Picture-Print Writing Test (TTWT) and the Picture-Print Matching Test (PPMT). Three additional assessments were conducted by teacher with aim to evaluate the reading progress. In the second phase of the study, 22 intervention sessions were done with the EG. In the third phase, both groups were assessed again with the same tests. Results: ANCOVAS showed a significant difference between the groups for the mean score of the pre and post assessment. The results indicate a positive effect of a phonological awareness training a program on reading and writing skills of the public school students.reading, writing, intervention, phonological awarness.

Informovanost žáků vybraných středních škol o chování během mimořádných událostí / Awerness of selected high school students about behavior during emergencies

Veinlichová, Kristýna January 2022 (has links)
This thesis is focused on emergencies and behavior during emergencies. The aim of the work was to find out whether the pupils of selected secondary schools know what emergency situations are and how they should behave during them. Based on the evaluation of the questionnaires that the students filled in, I am creating a possible lecture that could improve the students' awareness of the issue. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the definition of emergencies. I also deal with how the warning of the population, evacuation and hiding of the population in the event of an emergency occurs. I also deal with how to proceed in specific emergencies. Extraordinary situations are selected according to the probability of occurrence in our territory. The part devoted to the components of the integrated rescue system, which intervene in case of emergency situations, is also important. The theoretical part provides information important for the evaluation of questionnaires, which were used as a research tool in the practical part. In the practical part, I evaluate a total of 175 questionnaires from students from selected high schools. I summarize the results in several tables. From the questionnaires we can also read what level of study the students state as the one where they encountered the issue of...

Greenwashing in the fast fashion industry : Greenwashing in the fast fashion industry: The role of consumer education

Bosch, Mar, Obeso, Elisa, Palao, Alba January 2023 (has links)
Background: Every time sustainability has a more important role in the fashion industry and more consumers have higher environmental consciousness and look out for sustainable products in that area and companies that are genuinely sustainable. But the main problem is that lots of companies claim to be sustainable, but they are not and use the tactic of greenwashing, to attract consumers and trick them to purchase their products. Therefore, consumer education and awareness became essential to be able to avoid these misleading tactics implemented by the fast fashion firms.    Purpose: This study goal was to investigate the influence of customer knowledge of greenwashing on their purchase decisions and behaviour when it comes to environmentally friendly items, with a particular focus on the fast fashion sector.  This research endeavour aims to provide valuable insights into the challenges associated with promoting sustainable consumption and to propose strategies for increasing consumer engagement with genuinely environmentally friendly products through a comprehensive review of literature and empirical research.   Method: The investigation follows a deductive approach, and it uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to gather the information to resolve the research question. It uses focus groups as the main source of insights that are complemented by a survey.   Conclusion: Increasing the awareness of the consumer was enough to increase their purchase intention but not enough to convince them to make the change. The overall results add information on the findings of the literature review, but it would be interesting to add more information on our results, meaning that future research is needed to get more in-depth with these findings. In other words, have a more specific idea about consumer awareness on greenwashing and purchase intentions to sustainable products.

Who Participates in Academic Services?

Colón, Richard 01 January 2020 (has links)
Throughout the years the admission of Hispanic and or Latinx students to colleges and universities has risen dramatically. So much so that the relatively new concept of an HSI (Hispanic Serving Institute) was created; meaning that at least 25% of the student population of a university is Hispanic. This advancement for this Hispanic community is a huge advancement for the overall community, but how many of these Hispanic students are aware of the academic services that these universities offer. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the awareness of academic services and the participation and or engagement of those services amongst Hispanic, Latinx, and First-generation students. For this study 300, University of Central Florida students were asked to fill out a survey to further understand the awareness and participation of academic services at the University of Central Florida. This study was distributed through Qualtrics. Certain questions used a Likert scale and a combination of multiple-choice and open-ended questions to find out information on the engagement and or participation of services. I hypothesized that Hispanic and or Latinx students, once they are made to be aware of these academic services, the more likely they will participate and continue to engage in these services that are being offered to them. The expected findings for this study are that there as there is an increase in the awareness of services offered, the participation of those services will increase amongst the Hispanic student body. This information will be significant because it can help the university understand where they can improve to help their rapidly growing Hispanic population; this study can also be used to figure out what policies or other further implications that are needed to be created to help the Latinx population.
