Brand identity of a selected South African bank

Thesis (MTech (Marketing))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. / By virtue of existence, a brand has a history, and probably an envisaged future. Collectively these variables are understood to be central to a brand’s identity formulation. However, there are various other elements that may inform brand identity construction. This study investigated brand identity formulation of a bank brand in the South African banking sector. In essence, the current study probed variables or elements that inform brand identity formulation, in this service oriented sector. It is understood that individual human identities can collectively influence the formulation of an institution’s brand identity, among other factors. Therefore, a question arises whether academic brand identity theory and practice are congruent in service sectors, particularly the South African banking sector. Dominated by few major banks, the South African banking sector is characterised by an oligopolistic market structure, where services provided are seen to be generic. Hence, the current inquiry on the practice (or lack thereof) of brand identity theory for differentiation, and distinction purposes. In this regard, Nedbank was used as a reference institution. In essence, Nedbank brand identity was investigated.

O presente estudo desenvolve e testa um modelo de segmentação por benefícios de consumidores bancários pessoas físicas. Para isso, investiga os atributos determinantes na escolha de bancos múltiplos para a abertura de novas contas-corrente a partir de uma extensa revisão da literatura sobre o tema. A identificação da determinância dos atributos no modelo é feita pela combinação entre a importância do atributo ao respondente e seu grau de diferenciação percebida entre as ofertas de mercado. A metodologia de pesquisa utilizada na aplicação do modelo tem por base uma abordagem quantitativa de levantamento de dados primários junto a uma amostra não-probabilística de clientes bancários da cidade de São Paulo. A análise de dados prevista no modelo e aplicada à pesquisa utiliza a técnica estatística de Análise Fatorial para reduzir o conjunto de atributos de pesquisa a fatores representativos dos benefícios procurados, seguida de Análises de Conglomerados dos tipos hierárquica e K-Means para agrupar os respondentes em relação aos benefícios procurados e às suas características demográficas. Conforme considerado no modelo, devido à impossibilidade de caracterização demográfica direta dos integrantes dos segmentos por benefícios, a análise estatística dos dados da pesquisa resulta finalmente em segmentos de 1a e 2a ordem do tipo post hoc e a priori, respectivamente. As considerações finais do estudo validam o modelo proposto à luz dos objetivos estabelecidos e dos requisitos geralmente aceitos para um processo de segmentação eficaz e conclui por sua aplicabilidade e sua utilidade aos profissionais de marketing de instituições financeiras e aos membros da Academia. / This study develops and tests a model of segmentation of individual banking consumers using customer desired benefits. For that purpose, it first investigates the determinant attributes used by individuals when choosing a commercial bank to open a new current account, from an extensive review of literature on the subject. The identification of the determinance of the attributes in the model is obtained from a combination of its perceived importance and its degree of differentiation perceived among market offers. The research methodology used in the application of the model uses a quantitative approach based on a collection of primary data within a non-probabilistic sample of banking customers in São Paulo. The analysis of data foreseen in the model and applied to this research uses the statistical technique of Factor Analysis to reduce the set of researched attributes to factors that stand for desired benefits, followed by Hierarquical and K-Means Cluster Analysis to group the respondents in terms of benefits and demography. As considered in the model, due to impossibility of direct demographic description of respondents within benefit segments, the analysis of data finally results in segments of 1st and 2nd order, a priori and post hoc respectively. The final study analysis validates the model in the light of its objectives and the generally accepted requirements for an efficient segmentation process and concludes for its applicability and utility to marketing practitioners of financial sector and to the Academy members.

Este trabalho trata sobre marketing bancário, mais precisamente sobre o processo de distribuição de produtos e serviços bancários. O processo de distribuição dos bancos sempre se caracterizou por uma distribuição direta. Inicialmente, através exclusivamente de uma rede de agências próprias. Posteriormente, ampliando o atendimento para caixas eletrônicos, internet banking, telefone, todas formas de atendimento direto. Recentemente, alguns varejistas passaram a oferecer produtos financeiros diretamente para seus clientes, num processo chamado de desintermediação financeira. O sistema bancário captou esta oportunidade e, ao invés de entrar em competição com os varejistas, adotou a desintermediação financeira como um canal indireto de distribuição, tornando os varejistas correspondentes bancários. O objetivo deste trabalho é compreender a deseintermediação financeira sob a ótica de marketing. No processo de desintermediação financeira analisado, os correspondentes bancários surgem como um canal indireto de distribuição. A introdução deste novo canal altera alguns conceitos do marketing bancário, produz mudanças nos relacionamentos dos clientes com as instituições financeiras, cria novas oportunidades e abre novos mercados ao setor bancário. Dada à concentração do mercado em cinco grandes bancos (Banco Itaú, Banco Bradesco, Banco do Brasil, Banco Santander e Caixa Econômica Federal), responsáveis por mais de 80% do mercado nacional, optou-se pela realização de um estudo de caso múltiplo, entrevistando executivos responsáveis pelos correspondentes bancários, fazendo observação no correspondente por meio do cliente misterioso e por meio de dados secundários. Como resultado, é possível identificar novos mercados que os bancos passaram a atender graças aos correspondentes bancários desses bancos, novas formas de relacionamento entre clientes e bancos, uma alteração no fluxo de distribuição e na estratégia de distribuição dos cinco bancos pesquisados. / This work deals with bank marketing, specifically on the process of distribution of banking products and services. The banks\' distribution process has always been characterized by a direct distribution. Initially, it was done exclusively through a network of own agencies. Later, the banks expanded the service to ATMs, internet banking, telephone, all forms of direct care. Recently, some retailers began to offer financial products directly to their customers, in a process called financial disintermediation. The banking system has captured this opportunity and instead of entering into competition with retailers, adopted the financial disintermediation as an indirect channel distribution, turning retailers in correspondent banking. The objective of this study is to understand the financial disintermediation from the perspective of marketing. In the process of financial disintermediation analyzed, correspondent banking arise as an indirect channel distribution. The introduction of this new channel changes some concepts of the banking marketing, produces changes in customer relationships with financial institutions, creates new opportunities and opens new markets to the banking sector. Because the concentration of the market in five major banks (Banco Itaú, Banco Bradesco, the Banco do Brasil, Banco Santander and Caixa Economica Federal), which account for over 80% of the domestic market, it was decided to carry out a multiple case study, interviewing executives responsible for correspondent banking and observe the banks correspondents by the mysterious client. As a result, you can identify new markets that banks began to meet thanks to bank correspondents, new forms of relationships between clients and banks, a change in the distribution of flow and distribution strategy of the five researched banks.

Investigating factors affecting customer retention at Nedbank South Africa

The banking sector plays an important role in the economy of any country across the world. The recent financial crisis shows how much of the world’s economy is influenced by the banking sector. There are different roles that banks play in contributing to the operation and growth of an economy. Their role spreads from that of intermediary to that of provider of payment clearing services. Banks are an important and integral part of any economy. According to a study by Greenberg & Simbanegavi (2009), the South African banking sector is fertile ground for high levels of competition amongst its players. This competition is important for the proper working of the modern economy. According to Van Leuvensteijn et al. (2008), because banks act as the main vehicle for monetary policy, reduced competition in the banking sector can hinder the efficiency of monetary policy. As a result of the competition in the banking sector, customer retention is a key component of banks’ strategies in today’s market. The main aim of the study was to investigate factors affecting customer retention at Nedbank South Africa. The study focused on the institutional causes of bank customer defection and sought to investigate the effects of three factors (Customer service quality, Satisfaction with product, and Switching costs) on Customer Retention. This study showed the importance of customer retention and more importantly how the mentioned three factors affect customer retention at Nedbank South Africa. One of the highlights that came out of this research was that 50 perscent of the respondents were either considering closing their account or were likely to close their account within the next 12 months. In conclusion, these three factors were found to be important in the customer retention strategy of the bank. Recommendations were presented by the author on how to integrate the factors into a retention framework that can contribute to the profitability of the bank. Areas of future research that can be helpful to the bank were also highlighted by the author.
