Diblock copolymer–selective nanoparticle mixtures in the lamellar phase confined between two parallel walls: a mean field model

Shagolsem, Lenin S., Sommer, Jens-Uwe January 2012 (has links)
We present a mean field model for a mixture of AB diblock-copolymers and A-block selective nanoparticles confined between two identical non-selective walls. A horizontally symmetric lamellar structure of the nanocomposite is considered where nanoparticles are allowed to segregate between the polymer–wall interfaces. For a fixed value of wall separation, we study changes in the free energy as a function of the number of lamellar layers and the amount of nanoparticle uptake in the A-phase denoted by y = ϕx with 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 for a given value of ϕ, where ϕ is the overall nanoparticle volume fraction. The absorption isotherm for nanoparticle uptake in the A-phase as a function of ϕ shows saturation beyond a threshold value ϕs, and the optimal value of uptake y increases with increasing strength of monomer–nanoparticle attractive interaction. Increasing ϕ above ϕs produces a decrease in the optimal number of lamellar layers which is related to a jump-like transition of the chain extension. The effect of varying film thickness is also studied. By considering A-block selective walls we also investigated a wetting transition of the copolymer film and found the transition to be discontinuous. A corresponding phase diagram is constructed.

Hoffmann, Frank 30 January 2008 (has links)
Wasserdampf aussetzt.

Design of Smart Polymeric Materials with Responsive / Adaptive Adhesion Properties

Biehlig, Ekaterina 02 July 2013 (has links)
Adhesion between different objects is happening everywhere. Without it, simple procedures like walking or holding something in a hand or attaching a postage stamp would be impossible. The life itself depends on adhesion on all levels, starting from the interactions between the living cells. Adhesion between two substrates is a complex phenomenon, which at present is still not well understood. There are several factors determining the strength of adhesion: (i) molecular interactions at interface, (ii) mechanical properties of adhesive, and (iii) area of contact between adhesive and probing surface. Two surfaces are tacky when they possess the right balance between these factors. Controlling the adhesion of materials is important in many fields ranging from industrial purposes to biomedical applications and everyday usage. There is a demand for “smart” materials with integrated functionalities that make them responsive, switchable, biocompatible, anti-bacterial, more energy efficient, or autonomous. In particular, materials for such cutting-edge applications like cell culture, drug delivery, tissue engineering, biosensors, anti/biofouling, microfluidics, climbing robots, sport equipment and many others require adjustable/tuneable adhesive properties. Many efforts were directed towards fabrication of materials with either weak or strong adhesion depending on the field of application. However, design of “smart” surfaces with reversibly switchable/controllable adhesion is still a highly challenging task. Therefore, the thesis aims on design of smart polymeric materials with responsive / adaptive adhesion properties. For this, fabrication and investigation of two types of switchable polymer layers based on stimuli-responsive polymer brushes will be performed. The first group is dealing with thermoresponsive polymer brushes: poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide) and two types of biocompatible polyethylene glycol-based systems. These polymer layers undergo phase transition below and above LCST between hydrophilic and hydrophobic states. The second part of the work is related to solvent-responsive comb-like and block copolymer brushes consisted of hydrophilic PEG and hydrophobic PDMS biocompatible and biodegradable polymers.

Entwicklung von funktionellen Polymerbürsten mit modularen Eigenschaften

Rauch, Sebastian 11 July 2013 (has links)

Functional Coatings with Polymer Brushes

König, Meike 18 October 2013 (has links)
The scope of this work is to fathom different possibilities to create functional coatings with polymer brushes. The immobilization of nanoparticles and enzymes is investigated, as well as the affection of their properties by the stimuli-responsiveness of the brushes. Another aspect is the coating of 3D-nanostructures by polymer brushes and the investigation of the resulting functional properties of the hybrid material. The polymer brush coatings are characterized by a variety of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, with a special emphasis on the establishment of the combinatorial quartz crystal microbalance/spectroscopic ellipsometry technique as a tool to characterize the functional properties of the polymer brush systems insitu. The pH-responsive swelling of the polyelectrolyte brushes poly(acrylic acid) and poly(2-vinylpyridine), as well as the thermoresponsive swelling of poly(N-isopropylacryl amide) is studied in detail by this technique. Poly(2-vinylpyridine) and binary poly(N-isopropylacryl amide)-poly (2-vinylpyridine) brushes are used as templates for the insitu-synthesis of palladium and platinum nanoparticles with catalytic activity. As an example for the use of polymer brushes to immobilize enzymes, the model enzyme glucose oxidase is physically adsorbed to poly (2-vinylpyridine) and poly (acrylic acid) brushes and also covalently bound to poly (acrylic acid) brushes. In the last part of this thesis, sculptured thin films are coated with poly (acrylic acid) and poly (N-isopropylacryl amide) brushes and the swelling characteristics as well as the adsorption behavior of the model protein bovine serum albumin are investigated.

In this work, gold and platinum nanoparticles were synthesized into spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB) in order to apply them as catalysts for kinetic studies of the reduction of p-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride. It was found that the reaction follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism where both educts must adsorb onto the surface of the catalyst in order to react. Thereby, the rate determining step is the surface reaction of both educts. After the reaction, the product desorbs from the surface and a free active site is formed. With this model the intrinsic reaction rate and the adsorption constants for both educts could be determined. The measurements at different temperatures allowed the calculation of the activation energy and the adsorption enthalpy and entropy of the educts. Besides the reaction mechanism, the induction time of the reaction was analyzed. Here, it was shown that the reason of this delay time is a restructuring of the nanoparticle surface. The induction time is solely dependent on the concentration of p-nitrophenol on the surface of the nanoparticles and independent of the applied concentrations of borohydride. Moreover, hints for a spontaneous reconstruction of the nanoparticles without p-nitrophenol were found. In the second part, the catalytic oxidation of morin by manganese oxide has been studied. These nanoparticles were embedded inside the polyelectrolyte layer of the SPB. These nanoparticles were used for systematic studies of the oxidation of morin with hydrogen peroxide. It was shown that in this case the reaction followed a LH kinetics as well. Here, the intrinsic rate constants and the adsorption constants could be obtained for different temperatures. The activation energy and the adsorption enthalpy and entropy could be determined accordingly. The adsorption enthalpy is exothermic in both cases.

Conjugated Polymer Brushes (Poly(3-hexylthiophene) brushes): new electro- and photo-active molecular architectures

Khanduyeva, Natalya 21 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of the present work was to screen the main methods for the synthesis of conjugated polymers for their suitability in the preparation of conductive polymer brushes. The main focus was put on the grafting of intrinsically soluble substituted regioregular polyalkylthiophenes because of their excellent optoelectronic properties. The resulting polymer films were characterized and their optoelectrical properties studied. For the first time, a synthesis of conductive polymer brushes on solid substrates using “grafting-from” method was performed. The most important, from my opinion, finding of this work is that regioregular head-to-tail poly-3-alkylthiophenes – benchmark materials for organic electronics - can be now selectively grafted from appropriately-terminated surfaces to produce polymer brushes of otherwise soluble polymers - the architecture earlier accessible only in the case of non-conductive polymers. In particular, we developed a new method to grow P3ATs via Kumada Catalyst Transfer Polymerization (KCTP) of 2-bromo-5-chloromagnesio-3-alkylthiophene. Exposure of the initiator layers to monomer solutions leads to selective chain-growth polycondensation of the monomers from the surface, resulting into P3AT brushes in a very economical way. The grafting process was investigated in detail and the structure of the resulting composite films was elucidated using several methods. The obtained data suggests that the grafting process occurs not only at the poly(4-bromstyrene) (PS-Br)/polymerization solution interface, but also deeply inside the swollen PS-Br films, penetrable for the catalyst and for the monomer The grafting process was investigated in detail and the structure of the resulting composite film was elucidated using ellipsometry, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), and Conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM). The obtained data suggests that the grafting process occurs not only at the poly(4-bromostyrene), PS-Br/polymerization solution interface, but also deeply inside the swollen PS-Br film, which is penetrable for the catalyst and the monomer. The process results in an interpenetrated PS-Br/P3HT network, in which relatively short poly(3-hexylthiophene), P3HT grafts emanate from long, cross-linked PS-Br chains. A further method investigated during our work was to covalently graft regioirregular P3HT to substrates modified by macromolecular anchors using oxidative polymerization of 3HT with FeCl3. P3HT layers with variable thicknesses from 30 nm up to 200 nm were produced using two steps of polymerization reaction. The P3HT obtained by oxidative polymerization had always an irregular structure, which was a result of the starting monomer being asymmetric, which is undesired for electronic applications. The third method for the production of conductive polymer brushes was to graft regioregular poly(3,3''-dioctyl-[2,2';5',2'']terthiophene) (PDOTT) by electrochemical oxidative polycondensation of symmetrically substituted 3,3''-dioctyl-[2,2';5',2'']terthiophene (DOTT). A modification of the supporting ITO electrode by the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of compounds having polymerizable head-groups with properly adjusted oxidative potentials was found to be essential to achieve a covalent attachment of PDOTT chains. The polymer films produced show solvatochromism and electrochromism, as well as the previous two methods. After polymerization, the next step towards building organic electronic devices is applying the methods obtained in nano- and microscale production. Block copolymers constitute an attractive option for such surface-engineering, due to their ability to form a variety of nanoscale ordered phase-separated structures. However, block copolymers containing conjugated blocks are less abundant compared to their non-conjugated counterparts. Additionally, their phase behaviour at surfaces is not always predictable. We demonstrated in this work, how surface structures of non-conductive block copolymers, such as P4VP-b-PS-I, can be converted into (semi)conductive P4VP-b-PS-graft-P3HT chains via a surface-initiated polymerization of P3HT (Kumada Catalyst Transfer Polymerization (KCTP) from reactive surface-grafted block copolymers. This proves that our method is applicable to develop structured brushes of conductive polymers. We believe that it can be further exploited for novel, stimuli-responsive materials, for the construction of sensors, or for building various opto-electronic devices. The methods developed here can in principle be adapted for the preparation of any conductive block copolymers and conductive polymers, including other interesting architectures of conductive polymers, such as block copolymers, cylindrical brushes, star-like polymers, etc. To this end, one needs to synthesize properly-designed and multi-functional Ni-initiators before performing the polycondensation.

Temperature responsive polymer brushes with clicked rhodamine B: synthesis, characterization and swelling dynamics studied by spectroscopic ellipsometry

Rauch, Sebastian, Eichhorn, Klaus-Jochen, Oertel, Ulrich, Stamm, Manfred, Kuckling, Dirk, Uhlmann, Petra 07 April 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Here, we report on a new temperature responsive polymer brush system with a terminal “click” functionality. Bifunctionalized poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) with distinct functional end groups was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and grafted to a modified silicon substrate. The presence of the active terminal alkyne functionality is validated using an azide-modified rhodamine B (N3-RhB) via copper(I) catalyzed alkyne–azide cycloaddition (CuAAC). The optical properties and swelling dynamics of an N3-RhB modified PNiPAAm brush are analyzed in dry state and in situ by VIS-spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). The best-fit results are obtained using a Gaussian oscillator model and are confirmed by UV/VIS-spectroscopy. We observed evidence of interactions between the aromatic residues of the dye and the PNiPAAm amide groups, which significantly affect the swelling behavior of the modified polymer brush.
