Corals from the Rundle formation (Mississippian) of Banff, Alberta

Frebold, Fridtjof Albert January 1955 (has links)
This thesis contains descriptions and illustrations of six genera and seven species of fossil corals collected by the writer on Mount Norquay, Banff National Park, Alberta. A brief discussion of the fossil locality and stratigraphy of the Rundle formation in that area is given. As a result of statistical research and graphic representation, a new species Faberophyllum multiseptatum is described. The new species is closely related to F. languidum, F. leathamense, F. pisgahense, and F. araneosum. The species Ekvasophyllnm banffense is proposed, and the species Lophyphyllum ? cascadense Warren is redescribed and referred to the genus Ekvasophyllum. The genera Triplophyllites and Cyathoclisia, which previously have not been described from Canada, are recognized and briefly discussed. The descriptions of Lithostrotion whitneyi and Lithostrotionella banffensis are revised and adequately illustrated. From the study of corals from the upper Rundle formation the writer concludes that these may be important horizon markers, and recommendations are made for more extensive and detailed work on this subject. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Graduate

Exploring environmental communication : discussing systems concepts with communicators in Banff National Park

Challoner, Pamela 19 November 2009 (has links)
Through examples of ecological or living systems this research project introduced selected systems concepts to a purposely-selected sample of environmental communicators within Banff National Park. Participants’ individual reflections and collective discussions of the systems concepts led them to develop an expanded understanding of what constitutes effective environmental communication. Subsequent changes occurred to the system within which the project took place, including changes to participants, between participants, between participants and their environment, and to the researcher. Research project design reflected the systems concepts being discussed and encouraged participants to freely construct their own experiences. Content analysis enabled examination of qualitative data collected through web-based questions and discussion. Conclusions support that a systems thinking approach can enhance understandings of effective environmental communication, including increasing awareness of looping processes such as feedback, promoting collective action and a sense of community, and developing understandings of connections between ecological systems and social systems.

Convergence and collaboration : integrating cultural and natural resource management

Malins, Stephen John 03 May 2011 (has links)
Protected heritage area management is challenged by conflicting priorities perpetuated by the real and perceived dichotomy between cultural and natural resource management, their practitioners, their disciplines, and their values. Current guidelines promote integrating cultural and natural resource management to ensure holistic management of all values within a protected heritage area. This paper uses the management of the Cave and Basin National Historic Site to illustrate challenges in protecting both historic and natural resources. A qualitative inductive study included analysis of interview and focus group data for the site and similar protected heritage areas. The gap between integrative policies and the tendency for uni-disciplinary approaches to the practice of managing protected heritage areas is investigated. Five barriers to integration, such as lack of awareness, and five methods for progress, including facilitated inclusion, are examined. The author proposes collaborative, sustainable, values-based practices for the successful integration of cultural and natural resource management.

Expressão de marcadores imuno-histoquímicos em biópsias renais de pacientes transplantados / Expression of immunohistochemical markers in renal biopsies of transplanted patients with rejection diagnosis

Thais de Andrade Almeida 27 July 2012 (has links)
From the 60's, with the use of renal transplantation on a large scale as replacement therapy for patients with organ failure, came out the concern about the development process of graft rejection. This intercurrence, generally, evolves with clinical signs and symptoms only when the event is well established, or even when irreversible damage has already been installed. So, is essential a close monitoring, looking forward to detect subclinical cases. The present work, in order to provide new tools that help in the early diagnosis of rejection of the graft, evaluated the immunohistochemical expression of CD3, CD5, CD20, CD68, CD25, FoxP3 and C4d in renal biopsies performed between the years 2007 and 2009 in transplanted patients accompanied by the Department of Nephrology of Pedro Ernesto University Hospital, UERJ - RJ, correlating the results with the histological diagnosis. To this, the biopsies were evaluated by three pathologists who classified them, according to Banff 2007 Criteria, for the presence or absence of graft rejection and its type, acute or chronic. Thereafter, the paraffin blocks were processed by Tissue Microarray for all technique (Pires, ARC. & cols.) and submitted to immunohistochemistry. The positivity of the markers was evaluated and graded and the results were correlated, at first, with the presence or absence of rejection. Later, cases with histological diagnosis of rejection had their immunohistochemical profile considered according to the positivity for C4d, a defining marker of humoral rejection. At this point, we sought to determine whether the antibodies would be useful in detecting, in this studied group, humoral and cellular rejection. After statistical analysis, performed by Fisher's Exact Test, it could be, therefore, concluded that the behavior of the CD3 marker is able to infer the presence of rejection and that CD5 and CD25 antibodies may suggest cellular and humoral rejection, respectively. It was also observed that cases without histological diagnosis of rejection may have markings for C4d in more than 10% of their peritubular capillaries.

All of Our Secrets are in These Mountains: Problematizing Colonial Power Relations, Tourism Productions and Histories of the Cultural Practices of Nakoda Peoples in the Banff-Bow Valley

Mason, Courtney Wade 11 1900 (has links)
This study examines some of the significant challenges that Nakoda peoples encountered from 1870-1980 in the Banff-Bow Valley, Alberta. Beginning with missionary movements, the 1877 Treaty Seven agreements and the establishment of the reservation systems, I trace the emergence of a disciplinary power regime and the subsequent consequences for Nakoda communities. Canadian governments and agents of the colonial bureaucracy manipulated time, space and movement which altered the structure of Aboriginal lives in ways that attempted to increase visibility, economic productivity and docility. Race as a normalizing and dividing practice (Foucault, 1975) is used to demonstrate how levels of discipline furthered assimilation strategies through the formation of Canadas first national park and the development of the regions tourism economies. As the preeminent example of the engagement of Nakoda peoples in local tourism industries, the Banff Indian Days sporting and cultural festivals, which were celebrated from 1894-1978, are also investigated. Borrowing from poststructural and postcolonial theory, the interactions between tourists, participants, organizers and performers are problematized. It is revealed that the festivals became critical sites of cultural exchange that engendered unique socio-economic, political and cultural opportunities. In addition, the Indian Days fostered important identity-making possibilities and crucial spaces to assert, contest, and produce perceptions of Aboriginal cultures. This research privileges information obtained from oral history interviews with Nakoda peoples. However, archival materials, mainly newspaper accounts, photographs, tourism advertisements, and government documents also contribute to the primary evidence collected. As well as analyzing racial discourse, this work also considers how Nakoda peoples responded to the representations and expectations that informed the production of Aboriginal identities. I conclude this study by suggesting that it is crucial for researchers to consult diverse Aboriginal perspectives and collaborate with the communities within which they work. This research offers new understandings of the cultural histories of the Banff-Bow Valley which reflect the dynamic and complex nature of colonial power relations.

An approach to integrated ecosystem planning: an evaluation of the Minnewanka area plan, Banff National Park

Haid, Susan B 11 1900 (has links)
The Lake Minnewanka area is one of Banff National Park's most scenic and highly visited regions. Impacts such as the loss of significant montane habitat (characteristic of the Lower Bow Valley ecosystem) and social implications like crowding led to the need to develop a strategy for managing the area. The author worked with a planning team from the Canadian Parks Service(CPS) in Banff National Park (BNP) to develop the Minnewanka Area Plan. The primary purpose of the thesis is to evaluate the Minnewanka Area Plan to determine whether it effectively serves to maintain and enhance ecological integrity. A theoretical framework based on integrated ecosystem management was developed to evaluate the plan. Normative criteria from literature on recreational carrying capacity management and meaningful public participation were defined and applied to the plan. Overall, the plan was rated as successful according to the normative criteria. All of the criteria for an effective approach to carrying capacity management were considered and the plan reflected a fair and efficient public participation process. Stakeholder input influenced plan decisions to a high degree and several partnerships were developed through the planning process. Several inadequacies in the plan were identified through the evaluation. The adoption of an approach to ecosystem management called the Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) was recommended as a guiding principle within the plan. The step-by-step LAC model was seen as overly complex in the context of the case study. Indicators and a monitoring program which are central to the LAC process were not defined as part of the plan. The evaluation of the public participation process indicated that stakeholder participation was high early in the planning process and reflected a partnership relationship where stakeholders shared the power of decision-making. During completion of the draft and final plan, the process became one of public consultation where the level and frequency of participation was lowered. Recommendations for improving the efficacy of the Minnewanka Area Plan are made within the thesis. A simpler approach to visitor and resource management which maintains the essential criteria of the LAC approach is suggested. Measures for maintaining a high level of public participation and improving the accountability of the CPS in decision-making are proposed. The normative criteria based on carrying capacity management and meaningful public participation processes are presented as a model for facilitating integrated ecosystem management in area planning within national parks.
