Arvebring, Angelica, Karlsson, Linda January 2012 (has links)
Background: Today it has become more important with growing firms, because it creates opportunities to develop the society by, for example, creating more jobs. There is great potential and willingness to grow in small firms, but it is difficult to avoid different barriers to growth and to grow profitably. Many small firms are represented by construction firms and it is common for small construction firms to grow fast, but many of them are still going bankrupt. The question is how an adjusted management control of the firm’s organization can contribute to facilitate growth and help firms to solve their organizational management control problems that can arise. Purpose: Our aim with this study is to examine the management control problems that usually occur during the growth of small construction firms and how these problems affect the future growth, and also find out how the management control problems can be solved with different types of control, which are adjusted to the industry. Definitions: Growth usually means that something grows or increases in amount. Growth may also mean that something increase in size or that there is quality improvements resulting from a process development. Management control includes the tools, rules and procedures that are used to control employees’ behavior within the organization in accordance with the firm’s objectives. Completion: Data has been collected through interviews with representatives and documentation from three small construction firms that we have used as cases. Conclusions & results: A number of the most common management control problems in small construction firms are similar to those arising in other growing firms. However, we see that the choice of control in growing firms still needs to consider how the employees in theindustry behave and other industry characteristics. We also see that the management control must be adapted as the firms grow, because the firm’s needs and behavior change.

The respective literatures in social businesses inserted in basic contexts of the pyramid (BoP) still are not clear on what the characteristics of success for this type of sustainable business model. The premise that this type of business is still new, together with different aspects of the literature, make it difficult to know the outline elements of such organizations. To this end, this paper dared to gather three studies on organizational capacities, social scaling strategies and barriers to growth, inserted in the context of a multiple case study developed in the south of Brazil by two microfinance institutions. It has been shown that the suggested model can be used to size the social business success characteristics at the base of the pyramid. It was also argued on which elements are responsible for determining the success of the social businesses studied.

Internal Barriers to Growth : A Qualitative Study on High-growth Firms' Perceived Internal Barriers

Krusell, Karl, Tornell, Moa January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine what internal barriers arise and how these have been managed during different stages of growth in Swedish high-growth firms. The study’s model of analysis is based on Barth’s (2004) framework of barriers and Greiner’s (1972) model of five phases of growth. Through nine semi-structured interviews with senior managers, the study examines internal tangible and intangible barriers experienced by Swedish high-growth firms. The study’s findings indicate that the companies, initially characterized by a lack of structure, need formal systems due to their rapid growth. The introduction of the systems creates new barriers, making competent leadership a crucial requirement. Barriers related to planning and strategy decrease in later phases of growth, indicating that these must be overcome for successful growth. Overall, the study suggests that internal barriers differ in the respective growth phases and thus emphasizes the importance of adaptive management. Studiens analysmodell bygger på Barths (2004) framework of barriers och Greiners (1972) model of five phases of growth.

Understanding barriers to small business growth from the perspective of owner-managers in Russia

Doern, Rachel R. January 2008 (has links)
Small businesses, particularly growing small businesses, are regarded by policy makers and academics alike as being important sources of wealth creation, employment generation and innovation. Yet, few small businesses grow. One potential way of explaining why so many businesses do not grow is through the notion of 'barriers'. Previous studies on barriers typically identify and predict what kinds of barriers affect business growth, rather than attempt to explain how or why this is the case, if indeed it is the case at all. This thesis aims to elaborate on our understanding of barriers to small business growth. Two qualitative inductive interview-based studies were conducted in St. Petersburg Russia; the first was conducted in 2003, the second in 2005. Using semi-structured interviews in the second study (the main study), 27 owner-managers of small businesses in Russia were asked if they had intentions to grow the business, how they grew their businesses or intended to do so, and what, if anything, interfered with this process. The purpose of the study was two-fold: first, its purpose was to examine barriers from the perspective of individual owner-managers, with an emphasis on the meaning of barriers and the context in which they are perceived, and second to explore and examine how or the ways in which perceived barriers may influence owner-managers’ growth intentions and behaviours. Data were analysed using template analysis mainly, drawing on interpretive phenomenological analysis and matrix analysis. Based on the accounts of owner-managers, barriers were found to work in different ways to shape intentions to grow or not to grow, and as well to shape intention realization. How this occurred depended partly on owner-managers’ perceptions of the institutional environment. Findings suggest that the relationship between barriers and small business growth is complex. It is, nevertheless, a relationship which purports to be a fruitful area of study, one in which future research might further our understanding of small business growth from a continuing examination of barriers, particularly in relation to intentions, in relation to how meaningful barriers are perceived to be, and in relation to the context in which they are perceived.
