Predicting Performance through Athlete Behavior

Pierce, Lauren E., Pierce, Lauren E. January 2016 (has links)
The occurrence of attributions during goal attainment scenarios is important to understand in order to determine how and when individuals tend to process events and make behavioral modifications. In order to study this, a sample of two basketball teams (one male team and one female team) was studied through the course of a season using a standard stimulus, a generalized survey, and game film. According to results of this study, the basketball players in the sample tend to interpret emotions similarly, but process and assign attributions differently based on gender. This process seems to be determined based on field dependence or independence through a difference in relying on the entirety of the proximal context or the abstraction of the event into relevant parts. These findings suggest important interventions for the well-being of players as well as how decision making strategies may be affected by attribution process during play.

The Value of Fundamentals and Fundamental Drills to the Coaching of Basketball

Sweet, Van 01 January 1948 (has links) (PDF)
Hundrede of booke and megazine articles have been written about the use of fundamentals and fundamental drills in coaching and playing basketball; however, most of these books and articles have been Written and not thorough enough for the beginning coach to comprehend their meaning. These same articles and books have failed to explain clearly how the coach should go about presenting drille and fundamentals to his squad, and in most cases an explanation of what a drill or a fundamental le supposed to accomplish has been left out completely. of what value are drills and fundamentals to a coach if he does not know what they are supposed to accomplish?

Orientador : Roberto Rodrigues Paes / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação Fisica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-10T13:32:29Z (GMT). The objective of this study was to explore the acquired knowledge of Brazilian coaches and college professors in relation to the teaching-training process of technique and tactics in the Brazilian basketball. The work tried to contextualize the contents of the methodological strategies used by coaches and college professors for the teaching-training of fundamentals as well as defensive and offensive systems in all different Brazilian basketball categories. The sample group was constituted of 11 basketball coaches and 11 university basketball professors of Brazilian universities. The elected coaches had to be considered as national reference and for the elected university professors, the criterion was their master and doctor degrees in the sports scientific field, and/or basketball experts with teaching experience in Brazilian universities. The measuring instrument was an interview based in an open questionnaire. The data were analyzed qualitatively - through the analysis of the content; and quantitatively, by means of the frequency and percentage of similar answers. Results showed that, in regard to basketball teaching-training, in all stages of the process, considering the fundamentals of basketball and the offensive and defensive systems, there are convergences and divergences when it comes to teaching contents as well as methodological strategies, according to the interviewed participants¿ point of view. For instance, there are strong indications of conflicts between the teaching methods of the basketball foundations for beginners, when analytical methods are criticized, while the game method seems to be more appropriate, mainly to keep the children highly motivated. In the specialization stage, on the other hand, there was evidence that individual exercises may produce a more efficient adaptation to the motor technique, having greater acceptance among the interviewees. Regarding the defensive systems, it can be confirmed that the man-to-man defense is recommended in the initial stage, whereas in the specialization stage, the zone defense starts to be a strong tactical possibility. However, the predominance of the man-to-man defense is still observed. Regarding the offensive systems, it can be observed that in the initial stage, complex games should be avoided, privileging exercises based on game situations and individual conditions. Nevertheless, in the specialization stage, exercises should focus teamwork and more complex strategies. Based in the results of the study it is important to consider that basketball teaching must be conceived in a long term process whose contents and methods may vary according to athletes¿ fundamentals and tactics, with a model of initial stage for the Brazilian basketball that still needs further longitudinal studies. With reference to the specialization stage, it is mandatory that contents and training methods be planned in a long term basis, mainly after the age of 15, targeting national and international levels. Thus, it is possible to signal some pedagogical possibilities for the different phases from the two stages of the basketball learning process in Brazil, taking in consideration the contents and pedagogical strategies of the teaching-training process, in a long-term basis / Doutorado / Ciencia do Desporto / Doutor em Educação Física
